Yes—if you want an open-ended space sandbox rather than a tightly scripted campaign. No Man’s Sky is a strong solo purchase for players who enjoy choosing their own objectives across planetary exploration, survival, resource gathering, trading and base building. It is also a good co-op buy for groups that want to explore, construct bases and take on missions together.
The major exception is the Nintendo hardware split: the original Nintendo Switch edition has no multiplayer, while the Nintendo Switch 2 edition adds online multiplayer, cross-play and cross-save. Your platform, appetite for self-directed play and the current price matter more than the game’s 2016 launch reputation.

Is No Man’s Sky worth it for a solo player?
It is worth buying solo when you like making your own goals. The game presents a huge universe of planets, hazardous environments, resources, trading opportunities and construction systems, while allowing you to follow its story at your own pace or largely ignore it. Hello Games describes more than 30 hours of story on its official site; that is a developer-provided description, not an independently timed playthrough.

Steam labels the game as single-player and describes explorer, trader and fighter paths. Those labels capture the central choice: you can spend a session scanning worlds, hunting materials, improving a ship, trading between systems, expanding a base or advancing a mission. There is no requirement to follow one fixed itinerary.
What solo play feels like in practical terms
- Exploration: Travel between procedurally generated planets, discover wildlife and landscapes, and decide which locations deserve your attention.
- Survival and resources: Hazardous environments make gathering and equipment management part of the loop. Preparation matters when you visit harsher worlds.
- Building: Construct a home base and expand it as your inventory, technology and ambitions grow.
- Trading and progression: Gather, sell, buy and upgrade while choosing whether to emphasize commerce, combat or discovery.
- Story at your pace: The narrative provides direction without preventing you from wandering away to pursue another project.
This freedom is also the main reason some players may not connect with the game. If you need a tightly choreographed campaign, constant objective markers or a short list of mandatory missions, the open-ended structure can feel diffuse. That is a preference judgment, not a measured performance defect: the official descriptions intentionally position No Man’s Sky as a shared, open universe with multiple activities.
Can I play No Man’s Sky with friends?
Yes, on supported editions. Hello Games says friends can explore, build, survive and undertake missions together, and Steam lists online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer. The game is best understood as a shared sandbox: your group can meet, travel, construct and work on activities together, but you should not assume that every quest state, ownership rule or objective is synchronized identically for every member.
The Space Anomaly social hub can host up to 32 players according to Hello Games. That is a social-hub capacity, not a specification for a 32-person co-op party. PlayStation’s US product listing describes up to four online players, while Nintendo’s Switch 2 listing specifies one-to-four online players.
What co-op is good at
- Joint discovery: Meet at a system, visit unusual planets and share the surprise of finding new locations.
- Construction projects: Divide gathering and building work when creating a base or other shared project.
- Mission sessions: Use the game’s missions and activities as a reason to group up, rather than expecting a single linear campaign designed around a fixed party.
- Social play: Use the Anomaly as a meeting point and coordinate with other players in the wider universe.
Do not buy it expecting couch co-op, a guaranteed identical quest progression for all players or a documented universal voice-chat setup. Those details are not established by the cited product descriptions. The safest expectation is online cooperative exploration and construction on compatible editions.

Which Nintendo Switch version should a co-op player buy?
Buy the Switch 2 edition if multiplayer matters. In a June 4, 2025 announcement, Hello Games founder Sean Murray said: “The extra power has allowed us to add full Multiplayer to the Switch 2 edition (which was missing from Switch 1).” Nintendo’s separate listings reinforce that distinction: the original Switch product is listed as a one-player game, while the Switch 2 product lists online play for one to four players.

Online membership requirements
Nintendo specifies Nintendo Switch Online for online play on Switch 2. The US PlayStation listing marks online play as optional but says a PlayStation Plus subscription is required for online multiplayer. Do not automatically apply either rule to PC, and do not assume an Xbox subscription requirement from the available data without checking the current Xbox listing.
What is the difference between cross-play and cross-save?
Cross-play lets players on supported platforms join the same multiplayer session. Cross-save moves your progress between supported platforms through Hello Games’ separate account-linked service. They solve different problems and neither means one purchase gives you a free copy everywhere.
Hello Games’ cross-save documentation names PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and Mac, with up to five cloud-uploaded saves. Before relying on it, link the correct account, upload the save from the source platform and confirm that the destination platform recognizes the same Hello Games account. A platform-specific purchase and any required online membership remain separate considerations.

Storefront copy sometimes uses broad wording such as “Nintendo Switch” when it does not clearly separate generations. For multiplayer decisions, rely on Hello Games’ explicit Switch 1 versus Switch 2 announcement and Nintendo’s individual product pages rather than a generic cross-play label.
What has changed since No Man’s Sky launched?
Steam dates the release to August 12, 2016, but the current feature list is much broader than the launch-era description. Steam now highlights updates including Worlds Part II, Voyagers, Remnant, Xeno Arena, The Swarm and Cosmos. Hello Games’ release information also lists Forsaken 7.10 and 7.11 fixes after Cosmos 7.0.
Cosmos adds station direction, alliances for coordinated exploration, orbital construction and deep-space salvage. Forsaken adds courier contracts, new corvette parts, a minimal-HUD mode and seamless warping. These additions support saying that the game is still being expanded; they do not justify predicting how long future updates will continue.
Steam’s storefront snapshot observed in 2026 showed 91% positive from 5,165 recent reviews and 82% positive from 186,812 English-language reviews. Treat those figures as dated user-review snapshots rather than a scientific survey, and refresh the listing if exact percentages are important when you publish or buy.
How much does No Man’s Sky cost?
Hello Games’ factsheet quotes a regular US price of $59.99, subject to country and platform variation. The US PlayStation page displayed a $23.99 promotion ending November 5, 2026 at 07:59 UTC when checked. That is a temporary offer, not a permanent price recommendation, so check your own store before assuming the same discount applies.

Budget for more than the game price when appropriate:
- Switch 2: Nintendo Switch Online is required for online multiplayer.
- PlayStation: PlayStation Plus is required for online multiplayer on the US listing.
- PC: Check Steam’s current minimum Windows requirements and your hardware before purchase; do not assume an older computer will run the game comfortably.
- VR: VR is a supported way to play, but a headset is an additional hardware decision and should be evaluated separately for compatibility and cost.
Prices, discounts, tax and physical-stock availability vary by country. Compare the current digital listing with the physical edition available for your chosen platform, including delivery time and storage requirements.
Should you buy a physical PS5 copy or go digital?
A physical PS5 edition is a sensible choice if you want a disc, resale flexibility or a boxed collection. A digital edition is simpler if you switch between consoles, share a console library under your platform’s rules or want immediate installation. The game itself is the same product category; the practical difference is ownership format, storage and how you prefer to access it.

A publisher listing identifies PS5 and Nintendo Switch physical editions. The Switch physical option should be treated as a solo-oriented purchase unless the package is explicitly the Switch 2 edition, because the original Switch version does not provide multiplayer. Do not infer stock levels, retailer pricing or any particular seller’s terms from the existence of a listing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you decide based on your play style?
Use this decision framework before checkout:
- Choose solo or co-op first. If you mainly want exploration, building and a flexible story, solo is a complete way to play. If the purchase is for a group, confirm that every player owns a supported edition.
- Check the exact hardware generation. On Nintendo hardware, “Switch” is not specific enough. Verify whether the listing says original Switch or Switch 2.
- Confirm online costs. Add PlayStation Plus or Nintendo Switch Online where required. Do not assume a PC player needs the same subscription.
- Separate cross-play from cross-save. Cross-play answers “Can we join each other?” Cross-save answers “Can I move my progress?” Neither removes the need to buy the game on a new platform.
- Compare today’s price with your tolerance for an open-ended loop. A discount is useful only if you genuinely want a game built around repeated exploration, gathering and construction.
- Check PC requirements and edition details. Use the current Steam requirements and the exact console listing, not an old launch article.
Who should buy No Man’s Sky?
Buy it if:
- You enjoy setting your own goals instead of following a strictly paced campaign.
- You want a solo game with exploration, survival, gathering, trading and construction in one loop.
- Your group wants an online sandbox for shared travel, building and missions.
- You are buying Switch 2 specifically for multiplayer and have confirmed the online membership requirement.
- You value a game that has grown substantially through years of named updates.
Consider skipping it if:
- You need a consistently cinematic, linear story with tightly synchronized co-op progression.
- You are buying the original Switch edition because you expect online multiplayer.
- You dislike gathering resources, managing equipment or revisiting an open-ended progression loop.
- Your group requires couch co-op or a guaranteed party-size and voice-chat arrangement not documented by the store listing.
- You are relying on an old review or a sale price that is no longer active.
How this recommendation is grounded
The recommendation weighs five practical factors: whether you prefer self-directed solo play or a shared sandbox, whether your exact edition supports multiplayer, the current game price plus any platform membership, the distinction between cross-play and cross-save, and the scope of updates since 2016. The evidence comes from Hello Games’ official descriptions and announcements, Nintendo and PlayStation product listings, Steam’s current listing and Hello Games’ cross-save documentation.

The bottom line
No Man’s Sky is worth buying in 2026 for solo players who want freedom to explore and build, and for co-op groups that want a shared space sandbox. Make the purchase conditional on the platform: the original Switch is solo-only, while Switch 2 supports multiplayer. Check the live price, online-membership requirement and exact edition before you pay.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does cross-save let me play on another platform without buying the game again?
No. Cross-save transfers eligible progress through your linked Hello Games account, but each platform still has its own purchase and account rules. Treat it as a save-migration feature, not a universal license.
Can an original Switch owner play with someone on Switch 2?
Not through the original Switch edition’s own multiplayer, because that version lacks multiplayer. Check whether your purchase qualifies for the stated free upgrade to the Switch 2 edition, then use the upgraded edition for online play.
Is the story mandatory if I mainly want to build bases?
No. The official positioning allows you to pursue the story at your own pace while spending time on exploration, gathering and construction. You can use narrative missions for direction without treating them as the only progression path.
Do Steam review percentages prove that the game is worth buying?
They are useful sentiment signals, not guarantees for every player. The percentages are snapshots that change over time, and your platform, preferred play style and tolerance for open-ended repetition are more decisive.
