The Sharp FX-J80J-W is a large-room air purifier with a conventional HEPA and deodorizing filter stack, particle and odor sensing, and Sharp’s Plasmacluster ion system. Its strongest documented figures are a 480 m³/h maximum airflow, 15 dBA low-mode noise and a JEM1467 room-size rating of about 62 m². It can suit a substantial bedroom, living area or open-plan zone, but the buying decision is complicated by availability: Australian consumer publication CHOICE lists the model as discontinued. Existing owners should be able to identify genuine filters, while prospective buyers should verify both the purifier’s condition and future filter stock before paying a premium.
Is the Sharp FX-J80J-W worth buying?
It is worth considering when you need a tall purifier for roughly 62 m² under Sharp’s JEM1467 rating and value very quiet low-speed operation. It is a weaker choice if you need a currently supported model, app control, a compact footprint or certainty that replacement parts will remain easy to obtain.

Who it suits
- Households wanting one purifier for a large bedroom, living room or similarly sized zone.
- People who run an appliance overnight and prioritize the manufacturer’s 15 dBA low-mode specification.
- Owners who can source the model-specific HEPA, deodorizing and ion-unit parts.
Who should look elsewhere
- Buyers who require a new product with a clear current warranty and guaranteed retail availability.
- Anyone comparing room-size claims without checking the test method behind each number.
- Users seeking documented Wi-Fi, app, voice-assistant or smart-home integration; none is listed in the supplied Sharp documentation.
The central trade-off is straightforward: the hardware specifications remain useful, but the product’s age and Australian availability add ownership risk.
What are the FX-J80J-W’s key specifications?
Sharp’s documentation describes a 220–240 V purifier designed for markets using 50 or 60 Hz mains. The core figures are manufacturer specifications rather than independent laboratory results.

| Specification | FX-J80J-W figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum airflow | 480 m³/h | Sharp’s highest stated airflow setting |
| Medium airflow | 288 m³/h | Manufacturer figure for medium operation |
| Low airflow | 60 m³/h | Quietest stated operating level |
| Noise | 47 dBA maximum; 45 dBA medium; 15 dBA low | Sharp’s specified sound levels by setting |
| Rated power | 48 W maximum; 28 W medium; 4 W low | Running consumption varies substantially with mode |
| Standby power | 1.3 W | Power consumed while in standby, according to the specification |
| Dimensions | 416 W × 291 D × 728 H mm | Use these official dimensions when checking floor space |
| Weight | Approximately 10.6 kg | Heavy enough to plan the carrying route before unpacking |
| Electrical supply | 220–240 V, 50–60 Hz | Check that your local mains matches this range |
CHOICE gives a rounded Australian-market description of about 73 × 41 × 29 cm and 10.8 kg. Those values are close to, but not identical with, Sharp’s millimetre and kilogram figures; use the official dimensions for installation and treat the CHOICE numbers as a market snapshot.
What room size is the FX-J80J-W suitable for?
Use approximately 62 m² as the main room-size figure because it is Sharp’s JEM1467 recommendation. Sharp also publishes 127.89 m² using an NRCC-based method, but that is a different calculation and should not be treated as a second, equivalent guarantee.
Recommended Free Tools
| Claim | Area | Standard or context |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended room size | Approximately 62 m² | Sharp JEM1467 method |
| High-density Plasmacluster-ion area | Approximately 35 m² | Sharp’s stated high-density ion coverage |
| Additional brochure figure | 127.89 m² | NRCC-based method; not directly comparable with JEM1467 |
For a real home, ceiling height, doors, leakage, outdoor pollution and the number of air changes you want will affect results. A 62 m² open-plan area with high ceilings and frequent door opening will place more demand on the purifier than a sealed 62 m² room. Conversely, using it in a smaller room gives the fan more opportunity to circulate the air, although the purifier does not become a substitute for ventilation or source control.
The 35 m² figure applies specifically to Sharp’s high-density Plasmacluster-ion area, not to a separate HEPA room-size rating. Keep that distinction when comparing the FX-J80J-W with another purifier whose quoted area is based on CADR, an air-change target or a retailer’s own estimate.
How does the FX-J80J-W clean air?
The documented filtration path combines a pre-filter, a deodorizing filter and a HEPA filter. Sharp adds its Plasmacluster ion system, while front-panel monitoring reports cleanliness, PM2.5, dust and odor.
Pre-filter
The pre-filter is the first physical stage and is intended to intercept larger dust and debris before they reach the finer media. Its presence protects the downstream filters, but the supplied documentation does not state a universal cleaning interval; follow the model manual’s cleaning instructions and inspect it sooner in dusty rooms.

HEPA filter
The model-specific HEPA replacement is FZ-J80HFE. Sharp identifies it as “HEPA Filter (1 unit) FZ-J80HFE” in the manual. A HEPA stage is the part to focus on for airborne particles, but the available specifications do not provide a particle-capture percentage or independent CADR test for this model.
Deodorizing filter
The matching deodorizing replacement is FZ-J80DFE, listed by Sharp as “Deodorizing Filter (1 unit) FZ-J80DFE.” It is intended for odor reduction; no claim here should be read as a guarantee of removal for every gas or volatile organic compound.
Plasmacluster ions and sensors
The brochure lists Plasmacluster spot and clean-ion-shower functions. The front display monitors cleanliness, PM2.5, dust and odor, giving the automatic operating system information about changing air conditions. Sharp does not publish, in the supplied material, a separate independently measured health outcome for the ion feature, so evaluate it as an additional system feature rather than a replacement for source control, ventilation or the physical filters.
Which modes and controls does it have?
Sharp lists Auto, Max, Medium, Low, Pollen and Sleep modes, along with Plasmacluster spot and clean-ion-shower functions. A child lock and a one-to-12-hour timer are also documented.
| Control or mode | What is documented | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Auto | Listed operating mode; the purifier also has PM2.5, dust and odor monitoring | Useful when you want the unit to respond to sensed conditions rather than selecting a fixed level |
| Max | Highest listed operating mode | Use when rapid circulation matters more than sound or electricity consumption |
| Medium | Intermediate operating mode | A compromise between airflow, noise and power |
| Low | 60 m³/h, 15 dBA and 4 W in the specification | Best suited to quiet overnight operation when the room is already relatively clean |
| Pollen | Dedicated mode listed by Sharp | A pollen-focused preset; Sharp does not provide a separate airflow figure in the supplied specifications |
| Sleep | Dedicated sleep mode listed by Sharp | Use at night, checking the display and fan behavior in your own room |
| Plasmacluster spot / clean-ion-shower | Functions listed in Sharp’s brochure | Short, targeted ion-related operation rather than a replacement for whole-room filtration |
| Timer | One to 12 hours | Schedule a defined run period without leaving the unit on indefinitely |
| Child lock | Listed safety control | Prevents accidental changes to the controls |
The documentation names these controls but does not provide a separate noise, airflow or wattage value for every mode. Do not assume that Sleep, Pollen or the ion functions equal the low-mode 15 dBA figure unless the display or manual for your unit confirms it.
How loud and power-hungry is it?
The specified range is unusually broad: 15 dBA and 4 W on low versus 47 dBA and 48 W at maximum. Low mode is the setting relevant to a quiet bedroom; maximum mode is a distinctly more audible, higher-consumption setting.

| Setting | Airflow | Noise | Power |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low | 60 m³/h | 15 dBA | 4 W |
| Medium | 288 m³/h | 45 dBA | 28 W |
| Maximum | 480 m³/h | 47 dBA | 48 W |
These are stated values, not a controlled independent test. Room acoustics, distance from the listener, fan tolerances and whether the unit is on a hard floor can change what you hear. The small 2 dBA difference between medium and maximum suggests that airflow, rather than a dramatic sound increase, is the main reason to select maximum; the actual experience still depends on placement.
At 4 W, low mode is inexpensive to run relative to the higher settings, while the 1.3 W standby figure matters if the purifier remains plugged in but idle for long periods. Your electricity tariff and the time spent in each mode determine the annual cost, so a single wattage figure cannot represent every household.
Which replacement filters fit the FX-J80J-W?
Buy by part number, not by appearance. Sharp’s manual identifies three model-specific replacement parts.
| Part number | Part | Replacement information |
|---|---|---|
| FZ-J80HFE | HEPA filter | Sharp’s specified replacement for the FX-J80J-W |
| FZ-J80DFE | Deodorizing filter | Sharp’s specified replacement for the FX-J80J-W |
| IZ-C90ME | Plasmacluster ion unit | Replace when the unit indicator reaches Sharp’s stated service condition |
How long do the filters last?
Sharp says the suggested life for each filter is “About 2 years after opening,” under a test condition in which a room has five cigarettes smoked per day and performance has declined to half that of a new filter. That is a reference condition, not a promise that every household gets two years. Heavy PM2.5, smoke, cooking aerosol, dust or odor loading can require earlier replacement.
What does the ion-unit indicator mean?
The manual says the ion-unit indicator flashes at 17,500 operating hours and flashes quickly at 19,000 hours, when ion emission stops. The statement concerns the Plasmacluster ion generator; it does not say that the fan or the HEPA and deodorizing filtration automatically stop. Replace the ion unit with IZ-C90ME and confirm the indicator behavior in the manual for your exact control panel.
What do replacement filters cost?
Sharp Tempo Australia lists the FZ-J80HFE at A$149 and the FZ-J80DFE at A$129. These are listed Australian prices and can change with stock, seller and date. CHOICE records A$149 as a replacement-filter cost in its Australian product snapshot, but that should not be treated as a worldwide or permanently current price.

How should an owner plan maintenance?
Use a part-number and indicator-based routine rather than replacing every component on an arbitrary schedule.
- Confirm the model. Check the rating label and manual for FX-J80J-W before ordering; similarly named Sharp purifiers can use different cartridges.
- Inspect the pre-filter. Look for visible dust buildup and follow the manual’s cleaning method. Polluted or smoky rooms justify more frequent checks than the reference condition used for Sharp’s two-year suggestion.
- Record filter installation dates. Write the opening or installation date on the filter packaging so “about two years” is measured from the correct point.
- Order the two filtration parts by exact code. Use FZ-J80HFE for HEPA and FZ-J80DFE for deodorizing media; do not substitute a visually similar cartridge without compatibility confirmation.
- Watch the ion-unit indicator. Plan for IZ-C90ME when the indicator reaches the manual’s service thresholds, especially if the ion feature is important to you.
- Dispose of used filters according to local rules. The manual and local waste guidance take priority because disposal requirements vary by jurisdiction.
Never rely on a retailer’s generic “fits many models” wording when the listing does not show the exact FX-J80J-W compatibility. Discontinued products can attract leftover or incorrectly labeled stock.
Is the FX-J80J-W discontinued?
CHOICE marks the model as discontinued in its Australian listing. That is evidence about the Australian market snapshot, not proof that every country has stopped selling it. A used or old-stock unit may still operate normally, but availability of the purifier, warranty support and filters becomes a purchasing risk.
What to check before buying one
- Ask for the exact model designation, not just “FX-J80 series.”
- Confirm that the seller can identify FZ-J80HFE, FZ-J80DFE and IZ-C90ME as compatible parts.
- Request the manufacture date, remaining warranty and evidence that the fan, sensors and display work.
- Inspect the filters for smoke odor, moisture damage or heavy loading; a cheap body can become expensive once all consumables need replacement.
- Check the mains requirement. The purifier is specified for 220–240 V, 50–60 Hz, so an incompatible electrical system requires a different product rather than an improvised adapter.
For an existing owner, discontinuation does not make the purifier immediately unusable. It does mean that buying a spare HEPA and deodorizing filter while genuine stock is available may reduce future uncertainty, subject to storage conditions and the seller’s authenticity.
What are the FX-J80J-W’s main strengths and weaknesses?
| Strengths | Limitations and risks |
|---|---|
| 480 m³/h maximum airflow for a large-room appliance | Room-size claims vary by method: 62 m² JEM1467 versus 127.89 m² NRCC |
| Very low stated low-mode noise of 15 dBA | Maximum mode is specified at 47 dBA and 48 W |
| Dedicated HEPA and deodorizing stages plus a pre-filter | Replacement media are model-specific and prices or stock can change |
| PM2.5, dust, odor and cleanliness monitoring | No documented app or smart-home feature in the supplied specifications |
| Child lock, one-to-12-hour timer and several operating modes | CHOICE lists the Australian model as discontinued |
| Low-mode consumption is specified at 4 W | Official and third-party dimensions and weight are rounded differently |
How should you compare it with another purifier?
Compare like with like instead of selecting the largest printed room-size number. Put every candidate on the same worksheet and record the test method beside each claim.
- Coverage method: identify whether the area comes from JEM1467, NRCC, an air-change target, CADR or a retailer estimate.
- Air delivery: compare maximum airflow or CADR, and note whether the number is independently tested or manufacturer stated.
- Night operation: compare noise at the setting you will actually use overnight, not only the maximum figure.
- Electricity: record low, medium, maximum and standby draw if available.
- Consumables: list every filter type, exact part number, expected life and current local price.
- Support: check warranty length, local service and whether the model is still sold.
- Footprint: measure both floor area and height; the FX-J80J-W is a tall 728 mm appliance.
- Automation: verify which sensors actually drive Auto mode and whether controls are local, remote or both.
On those criteria, the FX-J80J-W’s standout advantages are low-mode quietness, substantial airflow and clearly identified consumables. Its deciding disadvantages are the discontinued Australian status and the need to interpret competing coverage standards carefully.

What is the final verdict on the Sharp FX-J80J-W?
The FX-J80J-W remains a capable specification-led purifier for a large room: 480 m³/h maximum airflow, a conventional HEPA/deodorizing stack, useful particle and odor monitoring, and a remarkably low stated 15 dBA on low. It makes the most sense when you already own one or can obtain a clean, tested unit at a sensible price with genuine filters secured.
For a new purchase, treat it as an availability-sensitive option rather than an automatic bargain. Verify the local warranty, check the exact replacement-part codes and use the 62 m² JEM1467 figure—not the larger NRCC number—as the conservative planning reference.

Can the FX-J80J-W operate on both 50 Hz and 60 Hz electricity?
Yes, Sharp specifies 220–240 V at 50–60 Hz. That range does not make the purifier suitable for lower-voltage systems, so check the outlet and rating label before connecting it.
Does the purifier stop filtering when the Plasmacluster ion unit expires?
Sharp’s service warning specifically says ion emission stops after the stated operating threshold. The documentation does not say that the fan or the physical filter stages stop, so an expired ion unit should not be interpreted as a complete purifier shutdown.
Is the FX-J80J-W suitable for a smoke-heavy room?
Its two-year filter guidance assumes a room where five cigarettes are smoked per day and performance has fallen to half that of a new filter. Smoke can therefore shorten filter life considerably; inspect the media more often and budget for earlier replacement.
What should I verify when buying a used FX-J80J-W?
Confirm the exact model, test every fan setting and sensor display, inspect for smoke or moisture damage, and ask whether FZ-J80HFE, FZ-J80DFE and IZ-C90ME are available locally. Because Australian listings identify it as discontinued, the condition of the individual unit matters as much as the headline specifications.
