Shark PowerDetect Transformer review: Is this £500 three-in-one vacuum worth it?

Yes—if you will genuinely use all three configurations. The Shark PowerDetect Transformer is a mains-powered vacuum that works as a full-size upright, a lighter corded stick and a handheld. Expert Reviews measured strong pickup, including 99.2% average pickup across its test set, while the nine-metre cable and large upright bin make it practical for whole-home cleaning. The compromises are equally important: stick mode has a smaller bin and substantially less airflow than upright mode, and the high suction can make the upright harder to push.

At about £500, it is expensive for a corded upright. Its value comes from replacing several appliances rather than from being the lightest or most convenient vacuum. If you mainly want quick, cordless grab-and-go cleaning, a cordless model is a better fit; if you want deep carpet cleaning plus occasional stick and handheld use without charging batteries, the Transformer makes a persuasive case.

What is the Shark PowerDetect Transformer?

The PowerDetect Transformer is a corded vacuum system that changes between three forms: an upright for deep floor cleaning, a stick vacuum for lighter work and a handheld for stairs, furniture and spot cleaning. SharkNinja describes the concept as “Three Vacuums. One System.” Expert Reviews says the upper section separates into a handheld, while removing the main bin produces a lighter stick configuration.

Unlike a cordless stick vacuum, it takes its power from the mains. There is no battery to charge or replace, but you must manage a cable while cleaning. The design is intended to give you upright-level cleaning when you need it and smaller, more manoeuvrable formats when you do not.

Shark® PowerDetect® Transformer™ Upright Vacuum, Midnight Steel, LX5002 | With DuoClean Detect, Reveal Technology, and Self-Cleaning Brushroll
  • BEST OVERALL CLEANING*: Ultra-powerful suction gives you the power to tackle a whole-home clean with ease.
  • POWERTRIO SYSTEM TRANSFORMS INTO 3 POWERFUL MACHINES: Upright for heavy messes, Convenient Stick for quick pickups, and Lightweight Handheld for hard-to-reach places.
  • HOSE-FREE ADVANTAGE: Untethered lightweight reach, no tipping,
  • REVEAL TECHNOLOGY: Never miss a spot, reveals hidden dust and debris the human eye misses.
  • AUTO-EMPTY: Snap the pod back on to automatically empty in stick and handheld mode to keep dust and debris inside.

How do you convert it between upright, stick and handheld modes?

Conversion is the core reason to buy the Transformer. Each format suits a different job, but they are not identical in capacity or cleaning power.

  1. Upright: Keep the main floorhead, large dust bin and full body assembled. This is the configuration for carpets and hard floors throughout a home.
  2. Stick: Remove the main bin and use the upper assembly with the floorhead. The result is lighter and easier to steer under furniture, but the bin is smaller and airflow is lower than in upright mode.
  3. Handheld: Split the top section from the rest of the machine and attach a suitable tool. This is useful for stairs, sofas, car interiors and small spills.

Because the stick and handheld sections share the system’s controls and floor-detection technology, you do not need a separate charger or motor unit. You do, however, need to empty their smaller collection capacity more often than the upright bin.

How powerful is the PowerDetect Transformer?

Independent testing indicates very strong cleaning, especially in upright use. Expert Reviews recorded a 60kPa peak suction figure in handheld and stick Auto mode and a 99.2% average pickup result across its listed test set. Those are test results from Expert Reviews in 2026, not a guarantee for every floor, attachment or cleaning pass.

Test Result Attribution and qualification
Average pickup across listed tests 99.2% Expert Reviews, 2026
Cheerios on carpet 97% Expert Reviews, 2026
Cheerios on hard floor 100% Expert Reviews, 2026
Flour on carpet 100% Expert Reviews, 2026
Flour on hard floor 100% Expert Reviews, 2026
Pet fur on carpet 98% Expert Reviews, 2026
Pet fur on hard floor 100% Expert Reviews, 2026
Peak suction 60kPa Expert Reviews, 2026; handheld/stick Auto mode

The figures show why the Transformer is more than a convenience appliance. It picked up all of the tested flour on both floor types, nearly all tested pet hair on carpet and every hard-floor test result listed above. Actual results will vary with floor texture, debris distribution, the selected mode and whether the bin and filters are clean.

Does it work better on carpet or hard floors?

It is designed for both. PowerDetect automatically adjusts to the detected floor type, and the floorhead’s reveal lighting changes for carpet and hard floors so dirt is easier to see in dim areas. Edge detection is also listed as a feature, helping the head work close to skirting boards and room edges.

Shark NV752 Rotator Powered Lift-Away TruePet Upright Vacuum with HEPA Filter, Large Dust Cup Capacity, LED Headlights, Upholstery Tool, Perfect Pet Power Brush & Crevice Tool, Bordeaux
  • 2-IN-1 POWERED LIFT-AWAY TECHNOLOGY: Allows you to lift the pod away to deep-clean hard-to-reach areas, like under furniture, while the powered brushroll keeps spinning.
  • ADVANCED SWIVEL STEERING: Easily maneuver your vacuum to get in and out of tight spaces, in corners, around furniture, and more.
  • ANTI-ALLERGEN COMPLETE SEAL: Works with a HEPA filter to trap 99.9% of dust and allergens inside the vacuum cleaner. (Based on ASTM F1977 of particles .3 microns or larger.)
  • LARGE-CAPACITY DUST CUP: 0.88-quart capacity for longer cleaning sessions. Easily remove dust cup to empty debris in seconds.
  • LED HEADLIGHTS: Powerful lights on the nozzle reveal hidden debris and pet hair around your home.

Carpet performance is particularly convincing for a corded machine: Expert Reviews recorded 97% Cheerios pickup, 100% flour pickup and 98% pet-fur pickup on carpet. Hard floors produced 100% results for all three of those listed debris tests. These are controlled measurements rather than a promise that every embedded or long-settled particle will be removed in one pass.

The trade-off is pushing effort. Expert Reviews notes that the high suction can make the upright harder to move, especially when the floorhead seals tightly to carpet. That resistance is the cost of the strong airflow; users who prefer a very light, effortless head may find a lower-powered cordless cleaner more comfortable for daily touch-ups.

Are the three configurations equally powerful?

No. The Transformer is one system, but the modes are not performance-equivalent. Vacuum Wars reports that stick mode has a small bin and substantially lower airflow and suction than upright mode. The handheld and stick Auto-mode rating of 60kPa should therefore not be read as proof that every configuration cleans like the full upright.

Use upright mode for large rooms, thick carpet and long cleaning sessions. Switch to stick mode when reach and lower weight matter more than maximum airflow, and reserve handheld mode for furniture, stairs and small areas where its compact size outweighs its limited capacity.

What are the capacity, weight and cable specifications?

Published specifications differ by market, so check the label and listing for your country rather than combining figures from different editions.

Specification UK information US information
Upright dust capacity 1.3 litres Not stated in the cited US report; Vacuum Wars lists a 1.04-litre bin for its US model
Handheld capacity 0.2 litres Not stated

The UK capacity and weight come from Ideal Home’s 2026 report, while the US bin, weight and cord figures come from Vacuum Wars. The small handheld reservoir is normal for a compact tool, but it means emptying is part of routine furniture and stair cleaning.

Which features affect everyday ownership?

  • Automatic floor response: PowerDetect adjusts operation to carpet and hard flooring rather than relying on one fixed setting.
  • Reveal lighting: The floorhead changes its lighting for the detected surface, making fine dust and debris easier to spot.
  • HEPA filtration: The listed filtration system is intended to capture fine particles as air passes through the machine.
  • Anti-hair-wrap: The brush system is designed to reduce hair winding around the roller, a useful feature for homes with long hair or pets.
  • Edge detection: The head is designed to recognise edges and clean close to room boundaries.
  • Odour neutralisation: An odour-neutralising feature is listed, but cartridge availability and replacement timing should be checked for the exact package.

Accessory contents can vary by retailer and regional package. Confirm the specific listing before assuming that a pet tool, crevice tool or other attachment is included.

How much maintenance does it need?

The machine has four filters: two pairs serving the large and small bins. Expert Reviews says they require periodic cleaning. Keeping those filters clear matters because a restricted filter can reduce airflow and make the high-suction head harder to use.

Routine maintenance checklist

  • Empty the upright bin before debris reaches its working limit; use the smaller stick and handheld bins with the same caution.
  • Inspect both bin systems and clean all four filters at the intervals specified in the manual.
  • Check the floorhead and anti-hair-wrap path for threads, pet hair or larger debris that may still catch.
  • Keep the intake and exhaust paths unobstructed so the automatic floor response can operate normally.
  • Replace an odour-neutraliser cartridge only with a compatible part for the exact regional model.

Do not assume that a larger upright bin eliminates maintenance. The Transformer has more filters and more removable sections than a basic single-format vacuum, so ownership is best suited to someone willing to perform periodic cleaning rather than simply emptying a bin.

Is a corded Transformer better than a cordless Shark or Dyson?

“Better” depends on what you value. The Transformer’s advantage is sustained mains power and upright cleaning performance; a cordless alternative generally wins on instant access, lower handling weight and freedom from a cable. The following comparison focuses on the decision rather than claiming a universal winner.

Decision factor PowerDetect Transformer Typical cordless alternative
Power over a long session Mains power does not run down during cleaning Limited by battery capacity and recharge time
Deep carpet work Full upright configuration and strong tested pickup Depends on the particular cordless model and battery mode
Quick grab-and-go cleaning Requires unwinding and managing a cable Usually faster to pick up and start
Weight and steering 8kg UK specification; high suction may increase push resistance Often lighter in handheld or stick form
Capacity Large upright bin, but much smaller stick/handheld bins Usually one smaller bin
Maintenance Four filters plus multiple configurations Still needs filter and brush care, but may have fewer parts
Price context About £500 in the UK, which is high for a corded upright Varies widely by model and battery included

Choose the Transformer when whole-home carpet cleaning is the priority and you will use the stick or handheld conversion often enough to justify the price. Choose cordless when most cleaning consists of short sessions, stairs or kitchen spills and you dislike cable management more than you value unlimited runtime.

Is £500 a fair price?

Expert Reviews assessed the vacuum at £500 in 2026. T3 reported launch pricing of £499.99 in the UK and $529.99 in the US. That places it in premium territory for a corded upright, so the purchase only makes financial sense if its three-form design replaces machines you would otherwise buy separately.

The price is easier to justify when:

  • You need strong carpet and hard-floor cleaning from one mains-powered machine.
  • You regularly clean stairs, sofas, car interiors or high surfaces and will use handheld mode.
  • You want a lighter stick configuration without accepting cordless runtime limits.
  • You prefer sustained power over the convenience of a battery.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You mainly need quick ten-minute clean-ups and do not want to plug in.
  • You have mostly hard floors and little need for deep carpet extraction.
  • You dislike heavier uprights or find strong floorhead suction tiring to push.
  • You will leave the stick and handheld parts unused; in that case, you are paying for flexibility you do not need.

Which model should UK and US buyers look for?

The UK model referenced in the buying notes is LX5001UKT. The US model is LX5002. Use the model number that matches your market because bin capacity, cable specification, included tools and replacement parts can differ between regional versions.

Before ordering, verify the voltage-compatible model, the exact dust-capacity specification, the cable length, the included floor and pet tools, and whether replacement filters or an odour-neutraliser cartridge are available for that model. Retailer bundles are not necessarily identical.

What should you check before buying?

  1. Measure your cleaning area: A nine-metre UK cable or 30-foot US cord covers a useful area, but you will still need to change sockets in a large or segmented home.
  2. Decide which mode you will use most: Upright mode delivers the strongest full-size cleaning; stick and handheld modes trade capacity and airflow for convenience.
  3. Check storage: Make sure you have room for the upright body, cable and removable sections rather than treating it like a permanently wall-mounted cordless.
  4. Confirm package contents: Attachments vary by retailer and market, so do not rely on a generic product photograph.
  5. Budget for upkeep: Plan for periodic cleaning of four filters and eventual replacement of consumable cartridges or filters where required.

What are the main strengths and weaknesses?

Strengths

  • Excellent independently measured pickup, including 100% flour pickup on both listed floor types.
  • One mains-powered system covers upright, stick and handheld jobs.
  • Automatic floor adjustment, reveal lighting, HEPA filtration and anti-hair-wrap are useful everyday features.
  • Large UK upright capacity and long cable support whole-home cleaning.
  • No battery charging or runtime countdown during a session.

Weaknesses

  • £500 is a high price for a corded upright.
  • Upright suction can make the floorhead harder to push.
  • Stick mode has a substantially smaller bin and lower airflow than upright mode.
  • Four filters and several removable sections create more maintenance than a simple single-format vacuum.
  • Regional specifications and accessory bundles are not identical.

Verdict: who should buy the Shark PowerDetect Transformer?

Expert Reviews calls it “an impressive corded upright vacuum that’s as versatile as it is powerful” and concludes, “If you’ve been after one vacuum to rule them all, this is the vacuum you need.” Those are reviewer opinions, but the test data supports the central point: the Transformer combines unusually strong pickup with genuinely useful format changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Shark PowerDetect Transformer need charging?

No. It is a mains-powered vacuum, so it runs from its cable rather than a rechargeable battery. That gives it continuous runtime but means you must plug in and manage the cord for every session.

What model number is the UK version?

The UK model identified in the product information is LX5001UKT. US buyers should look for LX5002 instead, because regional specifications and included accessories can differ.

Are the included tools the same in every box?

Not necessarily. Accessory contents can vary by retailer and regional bundle, so check the exact listing for the floor, pet, crevice and other tools you need before ordering.

Does stick mode clean as deeply as upright mode?

No. Testing reported substantially lower airflow and suction in stick mode, along with a smaller bin. Use the upright for the most demanding whole-floor cleaning and the lighter formats for reach and spot work.
