Verdict: The Shark BreatheClear with NeverChange6 (HP162 in the US, HP162UK in the UK) is a strong choice if you want an air purifier that explains its air quality on the machine, adjusts itself automatically and avoids routine filter purchases. Shark says its filter can last up to six years, but that is a manufacturer claim rather than an independently verified endurance result. You also give up an app, remote control, smart-home automation and the previous model’s Odour Neutraliser feature. T3’s hands-on review found the sensors responsive and Auto mode genuinely convenient, making this a low-effort purifier for people who prefer physical controls.

What are the Shark BreatheClear NeverChange and NeverChange6?

They are regional names for the same HP162 air-purifier platform. Shark sells the US model as the BreatheClear with NeverChange (HP162) and the UK model as the BreatheClear with NeverChange6 (HP162UK). The “6” refers to Shark’s advertised filter life of up to six years, not to six filtration stages or a six-year warranty.

The design is deliberately self-contained. A high-resolution display on the front shows air-quality information, while onboard sensors monitor conditions and adjust fan power. Shark’s product descriptions cover volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particles and environmental readings, and emphasize that no companion app is needed.

This is therefore less a connected-home product than an appliance you can switch on, read at a glance and leave in Auto mode. That distinction matters if you want a purifier to participate in routines, voice commands or remote monitoring.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How does the app-free operation work?

You control the purifier directly from its built-in controls. Shark says the sensors scan the air 3,600 times per hour and automatically alter power in response to what they detect. There is no account creation, Wi-Fi pairing or phone setup to complete.

What the display tells you

The display presents air-quality information locally instead of sending detailed histories to a phone. A colour-coded status system makes the current reading easy to interpret, according to T3’s review. This is useful when the purifier sits in a bedroom, office or living room where you want an immediate visual indication without opening an app.

What Auto mode does

Auto mode uses the sensor readings to choose fan speed. T3 reported that the sensors reacted “incredibly quickly during testing” and that Auto mode allowed the reviewer to leave the unit running with little intervention. Those are review observations, not a laboratory measurement of response time or cleaning performance.

How motion and light detection affect it

Shark says motion detection can boost operation when activity is detected, while light detection can dim the display. The intent is practical: the purifier can work harder when a room is occupied and be less visually intrusive when the room is dark. The product pages do not provide a quantified fan-speed increase or a measured display-brightness reduction.

How effective is the NeverChange6 filtration?

Shark describes the filter as exceeding the HEPA standard and claims 99.98% particle capture at every speed. That figure comes from Shark’s product information; no independent laboratory statistic was identified for this model. It should not be treated as a guarantee that every room will reach a particular particle concentration.

Real-world results depend on room volume, doors, windows, fan speed, pollutant source and where the purifier is placed. A purifier cannot remove contaminants it has not yet drawn through its filter, and it does not replace ventilation or source control. Use the stated room-size figures as operating assumptions rather than a promise of uniform cleaning in every layout.

What does “up to six years” mean?

Shark claims zero filter changes for up to six years. “Up to” is important: the statement is a maximum-life claim, not an independently verified six-year test and not a promise that every household will get six years of unchanged performance. Dust load, smoke, cooking particles, pets and operating hours can all affect a filter’s usable life.

The product information does not specify a user-replaceable interval, a filter-health percentage or a guaranteed replacement schedule. If the purifier develops an odour, airflow falls noticeably or Shark instructs you to replace the filter, follow the current manual and regional support guidance rather than relying on the maximum claim alone.

What room size does HP162 cover?

Coverage differs by region and by the air-change assumption used. The US listing states up to 750 square feet. The UK specification is more explicit: 70 square metres at one air change per hour, or 14 square metres at 4.8 air changes per hour.

Market and model Stated coverage Condition attached to the figure
US HP162, BreatheClear with NeverChange Up to 750 sq. ft. Shark’s US product-page figure; the page does not state an air-change rate alongside it.
UK HP162UK, BreatheClear with NeverChange6 70 m² One air change per hour.
UK HP162UK, BreatheClear with NeverChange6 14 m² 4.8 air changes per hour.

Those UK numbers illustrate why coverage claims should not be compared without checking air changes. A large room may receive occasional background cleaning at one air change per hour, while a smaller room can receive much more frequent air turnover. For bedrooms or offices where you want faster clearing, use the higher-air-change figure as the conservative planning reference.

What are the dimensions, weight and setup requirements?

T3 measured the purifier at 37.85 × 26.67 × 26.16 centimetres and 3.77 kilograms. That is light enough for one person to move between rooms, although you still need to leave unobstructed space around the air intake and outlet.

  1. Remove the purifier from its packaging and place it on a stable, level surface.
  2. Open the filter compartment as shown in the supplied instructions.
  3. Take the protective plastic off the filter. T3 specifically identified this as the essential first-use step.
  4. Reinstall the filter and close the compartment securely.
  5. Connect power, switch the purifier on and select Auto mode or a manual fan speed.

The unit arrives mostly assembled, so setup is shorter than on purifiers that require multiple panels or a separate filter-cassette build. Forgetting to remove the plastic leaves the filter sealed and can severely restrict airflow; if the purifier sounds normal but moves very little air, check this first.

Is it easy to use every day?

For routine operation, yes. The display, physical controls and Auto mode keep the main tasks on the appliance. T3’s reviewer described the unit as requiring remarkably little effort, with quick sensor reactions and an understandable colour indicator.

What you do not have to manage

  • No app download, account or Wi-Fi onboarding.
  • No remote-control workflow when you are away from home.
  • No regular filter-shopping schedule if the filter performs within Shark’s stated life claim.
  • No need to interpret a phone dashboard to see the current air-quality status.

What you should still check

  • Keep the intake and exhaust clear of curtains, furniture and walls that could block circulation.
  • Inspect the purifier if airflow, smell or noise changes unexpectedly.
  • Use the display as a trend indicator, not as a substitute for a calibrated indoor-air-quality instrument.
  • Remember that sensor-driven Auto mode responds to what reaches the purifier; it cannot detect every pollutant everywhere in a room.

No independent noise measurement is provided in the available review material. If quiet nighttime operation is critical, listen to the purifier at the intended fan settings during a retailer’s return period rather than assuming it is silent.

What do you give up by choosing an app-free purifier?

The trade-off is straightforward: simpler local control in exchange for fewer connected features. T3 noted that the NeverChange6 has no smart connectivity, remote controls, detailed app-based insights or integration with wider smart-home automations.

Remote access

You cannot start, stop or change the fan from outside the room. A connected model can be useful if you want to clear air before arriving home or check status while travelling; HP162 requires you to be physically near its controls.

History and notifications

The built-in display shows current information, but the available evidence does not establish that HP162 stores long-term graphs, sends alerts or exports readings. If you need historical data for experiments, allergy tracking or building-management records, verify that capability before buying.

Voice assistants and routines

Because there is no Wi-Fi or smart-home platform connection, you cannot add HP162 to a voice-assistant routine or coordinate it with other connected devices. The benefit is reduced setup complexity and fewer account or network dependencies.

How does it compare with the previous NeverChange model?

The most clearly documented change is the removal of Odour Neutraliser Technology that T3 says was used on the previous NeverChange 5. If odour treatment is a deciding factor, do not assume the NeverChange6 includes that feature simply because the family name is similar.

Comparison point NeverChange6/HP162 evidence What is established about the earlier model
Filter replacement Shark claims up to six years with zero changes. Not stated in the available material.
Connectivity No app, Wi-Fi, remote controls or smart-home automation. The earlier model’s connectivity is not established here.
Odour treatment T3 says the Odour Neutraliser feature was removed. T3 identifies Odour Neutraliser Technology on the previous NeverChange 5.
Sensor/display behaviour 3,600 scans per hour, colour display and Auto mode. Comparable measurements are not stated.
Noise and portability 3.77 kg; no independent noise figure supplied. Comparable figures are not stated.

That makes the newer model a better fit for low-maintenance simplicity, but not automatically a better fit for someone who specifically wants odour-neutralising hardware.

How much does it cost and what warranty is included?

Prices vary by market and can change with promotions or stock. Shark’s US listing showed $329.99 with a two-year limited warranty. The UK official page showed £249.99 when crawled, while T3 reported launch or listed pricing of £269.99, $329.99 and €319.99. Treat these as time-specific listings rather than permanent prices and check the current regional page before ordering.

The two-year limited warranty is separate from the “up to six years” filter-life statement. A long-life filter claim should not be read as a six-year appliance warranty or as proof that every component is covered for that period.

Who should buy the Shark BreatheClear NeverChange6?

Choose it if your priorities are automatic operation, readable on-device information and minimal filter maintenance. It is particularly appealing for users who do not want another phone app, do not need remote access and prefer a purifier that can be left in Auto mode.

  • Good fit: bedrooms, offices and living spaces where local controls and quick visual feedback matter more than data history.
  • Good fit: households that want to avoid frequent filter ordering, while accepting Shark’s claim is a maximum estimate.
  • Questionable fit: smart-home enthusiasts who require voice control, schedules or remote operation.
  • Questionable fit: buyers seeking the previous model’s Odour Neutraliser feature.
  • Check carefully: anyone sizing the purifier for a large room should compare the room’s required air-change rate with the regional coverage figure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What are the main advantages and limitations?

Advantages Limitations
No app or Wi-Fi setup. No remote control, app history or smart-home automation.
Auto mode uses frequent sensor scans to adjust power. Sensor response observations come from a hands-on review, not laboratory testing.
Colour-coded, high-resolution display makes status visible on the unit. No independent noise measurement is supplied.
Shark claims 99.98% particle capture at every speed. The capture figure is a manufacturer claim, with no independent laboratory statistic identified.
Filter life advertised at up to six years. Actual life depends on conditions, and six years is not independently verified.
Light 3.77 kg design and mostly assembled setup. Odour Neutraliser Technology from the previous model was removed.

Is the Shark BreatheClear NeverChange6 worth buying?

It is worth buying when “set it, read it and leave it” matters more than connected features. The purifier’s strongest case is the combination of responsive Auto mode, clear local feedback and a filter designed to avoid routine replacement. Its weakest case is for buyers who expect a modern smart-home appliance with remote controls, historical analytics or the earlier odour-treatment system.

Before purchase, match your room to the correct regional air-change figure, confirm the current price and warranty terms, and decide whether the loss of app control is a benefit or a deal-breaker. If those checks align with your priorities, HP162 is a focused low-maintenance option rather than an under-featured smart purifier.

Frequently asked questions

Will the purifier keep working during an internet outage?

Yes. HP162 does not depend on Wi-Fi, cloud services or a phone account for normal operation. Its sensors, display and Auto mode run from the purifier itself, so an internet outage does not remove the core cleaning controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the six-year filter claim cover homes with pets or smoke?

Shark’s wording is “up to six years,” and the available product information does not promise a fixed life for high-pollution homes. Pet hair, smoke and heavy cooking loads can make the filter load faster, so monitor airflow and odour and follow the current regional instructions if Shark calls for service or replacement.

Can I use HP162 in a room larger than the stated coverage?

You can run it in a larger room, but the purifier will deliver fewer air changes per hour than the published rating. Expect slower pollutant reduction and use the conservative UK 4.8-air-changes figure when you need frequent turnover rather than occasional background cleaning.

Is the display a substitute for a medical or professional air-quality monitor?

No. It is an appliance display intended to communicate the purifier’s sensor readings and operating response. It is useful for seeing changes over time at the machine, but it is not presented as a certified diagnostic instrument.
