Yes. The practical way to connect ChatGPT on the web to an IDE without routing every local action through extra API calls is to put an MCP server between them. ChatGPT web connects to that server through a remote HTTPS endpoint or Secure MCP Tunnel, while the IDE or Codex client connects to the same server through STDIO or Streamable HTTP. The clients remain separate: ChatGPT web does not read your local IDE configuration automatically. Token use stays under control when you expose only the tools you need, import a small tool catalog, batch related work, and keep write actions behind approval.
What does an MCP bridge between ChatGPT web and an IDE actually do?
MCP is the shared tool layer. Instead of making ChatGPT web understand your editor, repository, issue tracker, or build system directly, you run an MCP server that exposes carefully selected tools and data. Both ChatGPT web and your IDE become clients of that server.

- MCP server: A service that publishes tools or data, such as repository search, issue lookup, or a controlled build command.
- ChatGPT web: Uses remote MCP tools through a custom MCP app or plugin flow. You provide the server URL, or the URL supplied by a secure tunnel, and configure authentication.
- IDE or Codex client: Uses the same server from an IDE extension, Codex CLI, or desktop client. The ChatGPT desktop app, Codex CLI, and IDE extension can share MCP configuration stored in
config.tomlat the project or user level. - Transport: A local process normally communicates over STDIO. A network service uses Streamable HTTP.
This is a brokered connection, not a file-sharing feature. The web client does not automatically inherit your local workspace, environment variables, or config.toml; it can see only what the MCP server makes available to it and what you authorize it to use.
How do ChatGPT web and the IDE use the same MCP server?
They connect independently to one server. The IDE can launch a local MCP process over STDIO or call a hosted endpoint over Streamable HTTP, while ChatGPT web requires a reachable remote endpoint or a Secure MCP Tunnel.

Local IDE path
For a local process, the IDE extension or Codex client starts the MCP server and exchanges messages over STDIO. This is usually the narrowest exposure because the process can remain on the workstation, but it is not directly reachable by ChatGPT web.
Web path
ChatGPT web uses the custom MCP or plugin connection flow. You add the server URL, configure the server-supported authentication method, and review the trust warning before allowing the connection. A local-only STDIO process cannot be entered as a web URL; it must be made reachable through a suitable remote service or Secure MCP Tunnel.
Shared service path
A hosted MCP server can accept both clients over Streamable HTTP. The server still needs to enforce authentication, authorization, and tool-level restrictions separately for each client or user. Sharing a server does not mean that the two conversations share history or that ChatGPT web can inspect the IDE’s local state.
How do I build the bridge step by step?
Set up the narrowest useful server first, connect the web and IDE clients separately, and validate read-only behavior before granting any write capability.
- Choose or build the MCP server. Define the exact IDE capability ChatGPT needs: repository search, issue lookup, documentation retrieval, or a controlled build operation. Keep the initial tool surface narrow; do not expose an entire shell or every internal service simply because the server can reach it.
- Choose connectivity. Use a public HTTPS MCP endpoint when the service is intended to be reachable from the internet and your security model permits that. For a workstation, private network, or on-premises service, use Secure MCP Tunnel so the local server can be reached without exposing it directly as a public internet service.
- Add the server to ChatGPT web. Open ChatGPT’s Plugins or custom MCP flow, add the server URL or tunnel address, configure authentication, and read the trust warning. Confirm that the address is the one you control and that the server presents only the tools you expect.
- Configure the IDE client. Add the same server in the IDE extension’s MCP settings or in Codex
config.toml. Select STDIO when the client launches a local process; select Streamable HTTP for a hosted endpoint or tunnel. Follow the client’s own field names rather than copying a configuration intended for another client. - Test a read-only task first. Ask the client to discover the available tools, list a repository location, or perform a bounded search. Check the returned names, descriptions, parameters, and authentication behavior before attempting a command that changes files, issues, deployments, or other records.
- Enable writes only when required. Restrict the available tools with an allow-list such as
allowed_toolswhere supported, and require approval for consequential actions. Start with one narrowly scoped write operation, verify its preview or arguments, and expand only after the approval path behaves as expected.
Which MCP connectivity option should I use?
The right choice depends on where the server runs and who must reach it. STDIO minimizes network exposure for a local IDE; Streamable HTTP is the transport for a network service; Secure MCP Tunnel bridges a private server to ChatGPT web without making that server directly public.
| Setup | Reachability | Transport | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local MCP process | Workstation or client host | STDIO | IDE-only work and local repositories | ChatGPT web cannot reach it without a tunnel or hosted service |
| Public remote MCP endpoint | Internet-reachable HTTPS URL | Streamable HTTP | Web and IDE clients that can authenticate to one service | Requires careful exposure, authentication, and authorization controls |
| Private server through Secure MCP Tunnel | Private or on-premises server made reachable through the tunnel | Streamable HTTP through the tunnel | Workstations, private networks, and internal services | Adds tunnel configuration and another availability dependency |
Do not choose a public endpoint merely to avoid configuring a tunnel. If the server can read private source code or internal records, its reachability should be treated as a security decision, not a convenience setting.

That gives you two practical control points: the amount of tool definition material imported into the model context and the number of calls made after discovery.
Import fewer tool definitions
Publish only the tools required for the workflow. A server with repository search, issue lookup, test execution, deployment, file deletion, and dozens of administrative operations forces a larger catalog into context than a server exposing only search and issue lookup. Use an allow-list such as allowed_tools where the client supports it, and maintain separate read and write profiles instead of one unrestricted profile.
The reduction from a smaller catalog is an operational consequence of the documented billing behavior, not a published percentage. The actual amount depends on the number of tools, the length of their schemas and descriptions, and how often definitions are imported.
Make fewer calls
Ask for a bounded task rather than a sequence of speculative searches. When the server supports batching, request related lookups together. Avoid fetching the same file, issue, or metadata repeatedly when one call can return the required fields. A concise server instruction that tells the model what each tool is for also reduces trial-and-error selection.
Keep schemas focused
Tool names, parameter descriptions, and server instructions are context supplied to the model. Remove redundant prose, stale parameters, and overlapping tools. Prefer one well-defined search tool with explicit filters over several near-duplicates that make the model guess which one to call.
Keep local work local
If the task is ordinary coding inside the current workspace, let the IDE client call the local MCP server directly. Use ChatGPT web for planning, explanation, or a remote orchestration step that genuinely benefits from the web conversation. This is a workflow recommendation, not a measured benchmark, and it avoids an unnecessary extra hop for every local action.
Do not promise a fixed savings rate
No authoritative source establishes a universal percentage reduction in token use. Your result will vary with server tool count, schema size, prompt length, definition-import behavior, and call frequency, so measure the workflow you actually run rather than repeating a generic savings claim.

How should authentication and approvals be configured?
Remote MCP connections need an authentication method supported by the server. OAuth is the common pattern for remote MCP servers; the Responses API accepts an authorization token, and OpenAI recommends OAuth with Client ID Metadata Documents where that mechanism is supported.
Use the server’s supported method
Some deployments use OAuth, while others accept a bearer token or another server-defined credential. Configure the credential in the client’s authentication section rather than placing secrets inside tool arguments or ordinary prompts. A token in a tool payload can become part of logged or model-visible data and should be treated as exposed.
Review the trust boundary
OpenAI warns that custom MCP servers are third-party services. A connected server can access data supplied through the app, and malicious content can cause prompt injection or unintended actions. Connect only servers you trust, inspect the tool definitions, and verify where data is sent and stored before approving access.
Require approval for consequential tools
Read-only search and fetch operations are a sensible first profile. Tools that modify files, create or close issues, execute builds, alter infrastructure, or send messages should require explicit approval. OpenAI’s examples support restricting available tools and requiring approval for consequential actions; use those controls whenever the client exposes them.

Which ChatGPT plans can use MCP write actions?
Availability is plan- and permission-dependent, and OpenAI describes full MCP write or modify support as a rolling beta. Treat the labels and capabilities below as a dated availability note rather than a permanent guarantee.
| Plan or mode | Capability described by OpenAI | Availability qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Business | Full MCP write or modify support | Rolling beta |
| Enterprise | Full MCP write or modify support | Rolling beta |
| Edu | Full MCP write or modify support | Rolling beta |
| Pro in developer mode | MCP connections with read and fetch permissions | Write capability is not included in the described Pro permission set |
Workspace administrators may control whether custom MCP apps can be published or used. If a connection option is missing, check the plan, developer-mode status, workspace policy, and the server’s own permission requirements before changing the server.
What should I do when the bridge fails?
Most failures come from using the wrong reachability or transport, authenticating the wrong client, exposing too many tools, or expecting the web client to inherit local IDE state. Use the symptom to narrow the check.

The IDE sees the server but ChatGPT web cannot discover it
The IDE may be launching a local STDIO process that has no web-reachable address. Use a hosted HTTPS MCP endpoint or place the private process behind Secure MCP Tunnel, then add that remote address in the ChatGPT custom MCP flow. Confirm that the tunnel or service is running and that the URL is the one configured in ChatGPT.

ChatGPT web reaches the URL but shows no tools
Check that the endpoint speaks Streamable HTTP rather than expecting STDIO, and verify that authentication completed for the web client. A server can also return an empty or restricted catalog when the account lacks permission, so inspect the tool list and the server-side authorization policy.
The model makes too many exploratory calls
Reduce the exposed catalog, remove overlapping tools, and add explicit parameter descriptions and usage boundaries. Use a read-only allow-list for discovery, then add a single write tool only when a task requires it. If the task can be answered with one batched request, state that constraint in the prompt and server instructions.
A write operation is unavailable or remains pending
Verify that the ChatGPT plan and workspace permit the relevant MCP write capability; full write support is described as a rolling beta for Business, Enterprise, and Edu. Then check whether the tool is subject to an approval requirement or has been excluded by the active allow-list. Do not weaken approval controls merely to make the operation run.
The web conversation acts as if the repository is empty
ChatGPT web does not read local IDE configuration or local workspace state directly. Expose a repository-search or file-fetch tool through the MCP server, authorize it for the web client, and provide the needed repository or project identifier as an explicit tool argument.
How do I choose the safest tool surface?
Design the server around a small set of user goals instead of mirroring every backend operation. A useful split is a read profile for discovery and analysis and a write profile for approved changes.
Read profile
- Repository search with bounded path and result filters.
- Issue or task lookup limited to the relevant project.
- File or documentation retrieval with explicit size limits.
- Status and metadata queries that do not mutate records.
Write profile
- One narrowly scoped operation per tool, with required identifiers and validation.
- Previewable arguments so the client can show what will change.
- Explicit approval before the call executes.
- Server-side authorization independent of the model’s instructions.
This separation also makes token management easier: the web client imports only the profile needed for its current role, while the IDE can retain a local profile appropriate for day-to-day coding.

What is the most efficient operating pattern?
Use the IDE as the primary executor for local coding and ChatGPT web as a remote planning or reasoning client when that division matches your work. Keep both pointed at the same narrowly scoped MCP server, but select the transport and permissions appropriate to each client.
- Define one concrete outcome, such as locating all references to a function or checking the status of a release issue.
- Expose only the read tools needed to obtain that outcome.
- Connect the IDE locally over STDIO or to the hosted service over Streamable HTTP.
- Connect ChatGPT web through the remote URL or Secure MCP Tunnel only when the web conversation needs the same data.
- Run one discovery call, inspect the returned tool and arguments, and then perform the smallest useful fetch or search.
- For a change, switch deliberately to an approved write profile instead of leaving write tools enabled all the time.
The result is not a magic token discount. It is a controlled architecture in which definition imports, calls, permissions, and network exposure are all limited to the work that needs them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one MCP server serve ChatGPT web and an IDE at the same time?
It can accept separate client sessions when the server implementation and deployment support concurrent connections. Capacity limits, session isolation, and rate controls are server-specific, so check those properties before putting a shared service on a critical workflow.
What should I record during the first bridge test?
Record which client connected, the transport it used, the authenticated identity, the tools returned during discovery, and whether an approval prompt appeared before any mutation. These observations make it much easier to distinguish a URL problem from a permission or tool-scope problem.
Does changing a tool description really matter for token usage?
Yes, descriptions and parameter schemas are part of the definition context supplied to the model, so unnecessary prose increases imported context. Keep descriptions precise and task-oriented, but do not remove safety constraints merely to make the schema shorter.
Should I use a separate MCP server for sensitive repositories?
Often that is the safer governance choice, especially when different teams or trust levels need different tools. Separate servers or profiles let you apply distinct credentials, allow-lists, approval rules, and tunnel policies instead of relying on the model to select safely from one universal catalog.
