If a PS4 game crashes, shows a black screen, or runs slowly on PC, troubleshoot shadPS4 from the host outward: install the required Windows runtime, verify that the selected GPU really supports Vulkan 1.3, check the game’s CUSA status, then repair the dump, firmware modules, shaders, and performance settings. The current stable baseline is shadPS4 v0.20.0, released on 14 October 2026.
This is a shadPS4 guide, not an RPCS3 guide: RPCS3 emulates PlayStation 3. It assumes you already made a lawful dump from a PS4 you own; it does not provide jailbreak, payload, or game-download instructions.

What should I check first when shadPS4 crashes?
Work in order and change one thing between retests. Record the shadPS4 version, game CUSA serial and update version, selected GPU, graphics-driver version, Vulkan apiVersion, add-ons enabled or disabled, and the time of any Windows Event Viewer 1000 or 1001 entry. That record prevents a nightly build, a different GPU, and a changed game dump from being confused with one problem.
- Prove that the QtLauncher itself can start.
- Prove Vulkan 1.3 on the physical GPU shadPS4 will use.
- Compare the game’s CUSA entry with the compatibility list.
- Check the base dump, matching update, and complete firmware-module set.
- Only after the game boots, tune shaders, resolution, memory, thermals, and controller settings.
Download the official Windows, Linux, or macOS project files from shadps4.net. The project describes itself as “an early PlayStation 4 emulator for Windows, Linux and macOS written in C++.” The source is published at the shadPS4 GitHub repository; end users should use the QtLauncher rather than the core command-line binary. Which shadPS4 version should I use?
Use stable v0.20.0 as the clean baseline. GitHub records its release at 14:51 UTC on 14 October 2026, with the codename “Dead Or Stephen 5 – The Comeback.” v0.19.0 was released on 2 October 2026. Nightly builds continued after v0.20.0, but a newer build can regress a title that worked previously.
Open QtLauncher’s Version Manager and install v0.20.0 before trying experimental builds. Switch to a nightly only when its change log identifies the exact crash or game problem you have. Keep the working version pinned per game and note the version in your troubleshooting record. The v0.20.0 release notes also state that it follows the first stable shadNet 0.1.0 release and provides some online playability, including officially available online Bloodborne support; online play requires matching shadPS4 and shadNet versions.
Why does QtLauncher crash immediately or refuse to open?
On Windows, a silent crash as soon as shadPS4QtLauncher.exe starts is most often the missing Microsoft Visual C++ 2022 x64 runtime, not a game problem.
- Download the Microsoft Visual C++ 2022 Redistributable (x64) from Microsoft.
- Install it and reboot Windows.
- Extract shadPS4 somewhere writable, such as a folder under your user profile, rather than under
Program Files. The emulator must be able to write configuration, logs, shader data, and saves beside its files. - Start
shadPS4QtLauncher.exeand select stable v0.20.0 in Version Manager.
If it still closes, open Event Viewer and check Windows Logs → Application for an Event 1000 or 1001 entry at the crash time. Do not replace the runtime with a random DLL or a third-party “optimizer.”
Does shadPS4 require Vulkan 1.3?
Yes. The GPU actually selected by shadPS4 must expose Vulkan 1.3 plus VK_KHR_swapchain and VK_KHR_push_descriptor. A system can contain a compatible graphics card while the emulator is using a laptop’s integrated GPU that exposes only Vulkan 1.2.
Check every physical device
Run this command in a terminal:
vulkaninfo --summaryCompare the apiVersion shown for each physical device with Vulkan 1.3. If vulkaninfo is not installed, that absence does not prove Vulkan is missing; install the Vulkan tools or the current driver package from your GPU vendor and run the command again. Never download a standalone vulkan-1.dll, edit Vulkan ICD registry values by hand, or use DirectX repair tools for a Vulkan fault.

- Install the current graphics driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Windows Update is not a reliable source for the iGPU driver needed here.
- In Windows, open Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
- Add the shadPS4 executable and set it to High performance.
- In QtLauncher or shadPS4’s graphics settings, choose the discrete GPU explicitly instead of automatic selection.
- Run
vulkaninfo --summaryagain and confirm that the selected device, not merely another device in the list, reports Vulkan 1.3 and the two required extensions.
Issue #232 documents laptops where automatic selection chose an iGPU: the log reported “Vulkan 1.3 is required, but only 1.2 is supported by device!”, or the title remained on a black screen until gpuId or the graphical GPU picker selected the NVIDIA or AMD device.

How can I tell a setup fault from an unsupported game?
Search the game’s CUSA serial in the official shadPS4 compatibility list before reinstalling Windows. A black screen can be a host configuration error, but it can also be a title that the project still classifies as unable to boot.

For example, setup guides use Bloodborne’s CUSA03173 serial. If Vulkan 1.3 is confirmed on the discrete GPU and a second known-working title runs, a remaining black screen is more likely the game’s compatibility status, a mismatched dump, or missing firmware than a generic Windows failure.

Why does a game close after the shader-preparation screen?
The usual causes are an unpatched base game, an incomplete install, or firmware modules that do not match the dump. Verify the game files before changing graphics settings.
Check the folder structure and update
A base dump is normally a CUSAxxxxx folder containing eboot.bin and sce_sys. An update uses the matching CUSAxxxxx-patch identifier. If eboot.bin or sce_sys is missing, the installation is incomplete: re-dump from the console you own and confirm the catalog number.

Merge the update that matches the base game’s CUSA and region. Bloodborne guides specifically identify update 1.09 for CUSA03173; an unpatched base can close immediately after shader preparation. Do not mix an update from another region or serial.
Repair “module not found” errors
“Module not found” means the low-level firmware library set is incomplete or mixed. The required files are specific .sprx modules dumped from /system/common/lib/ on a PS4 you own and placed as a complete set in shadPS4’s sys_modules directory. Replace the entire directory with one consistent dump instead of adding one file from a different firmware version.
shadPS4 does not use a PS3-style PS3UPDAT.PUP firmware installation, but many games still need these modules when high-level emulation is incomplete. The official documentation assumes an owned console and lawful dumps. The compatibility project states: “Piracy of any form is strictly prohibited. Any reports involving pirated game dumps will be removed.”
How do I fix shadPS4 slow performance, stutter, or low FPS?
First establish whether the slowdown is shader compilation or sustained rendering load. Use the emulator’s F10 FPS counter and press Ctrl+F10 for video debugging. Measure the same repeatable scene twice; do not compare unrelated areas or rely on an invented average FPS figure. No official shadPS4 FPS benchmark suite or vendor-published “X fps in Bloodborne” result is available.

First-session stutter and shader compilation
Long pauses or hitching during the first visit to an area are commonly real-time shader compilation. Enable asynchronous shader compilation in the emulator, let the scene finish compiling, then repeat the same route. Later passes can be smoother because the shader data is already available. A crash during this stage is different from normal hitching; return to the Vulkan, update, and module checks above.
High-resolution slowdowns
1440p and 4K output can exhaust memory and page-file capacity. A secondary 2026 guide recommends roughly 10 GB of available RAM plus page-file headroom for those resolutions; the official minimum remains 8 GB. Lower the resolution scale and retest before changing operating-system settings. Community guidance commonly targets 16 GB of RAM for heavier games, but that is a recommendation rather than the project’s minimum.
Thermal throttling on laptops
If FPS falls only after several minutes and clocks drop as temperatures rise, select the laptop maker’s performance profile, use a hard surface, and clear blocked vents. Do not disable thermal limits, undervolt, or repaste as a first-line crash fix. Those changes can hide a cooling problem while creating instability.

After v0.16.0, project figures cited by Shattered.io counted 117 playable titles on Windows and 150 on Linux in June 2026. The project had not published a revised count after v0.20.0 by 17 October 2026, so do not treat those numbers as a current compatibility guarantee. Shattered.io also reported 32,029 GitHub stars and 2,314 forks in October 2026; popularity does not change a game’s status.
Why is PS4 emulation laggy on a laptop?
Laptop lag usually comes from the wrong GPU, power or thermal limits, or insufficient memory rather than from a missing DirectX component. Confirm the discrete Vulkan device first, then select the manufacturer’s performance power profile while plugged in. Keep resolution scale low, close memory-heavy applications, and make sure Windows has a page file. If the iGPU is the only device that reports Vulkan 1.3, the laptop may simply be below the practical requirement for that title.
On Linux, an AppImage build is available. Steam Deck and Proton configurations are described as experimental, and October 2026 guides still report save-permission issues on Linux. Treat those as platform-specific faults rather than evidence that a Windows dump or game update is bad.

How do I fix a controller that shadPS4 does not detect?
Keyboard defaults emulate a DualShock layout: WASD controls the left stick, IJKL the right stick, and F10 shows FPS. The project notes that Xbox and DualShock controllers work out of the box.
- Connect the controller before launching the game.
- Open the QtLauncher controller panel and confirm that the correct device is selected.
- Remap buttons if the operating system exposes a different layout.
- For motion-controlled games, use a pad with motion sensors or configure motion emulation; a basic keyboard cannot supply gyroscope data.
A controller cannot repair a Vulkan crash or unsupported title. Treat input diagnosis separately after the game reaches its menu.

What should I do when online features fail?
Use the same shadPS4 and shadNet versions on every participating setup. The v0.20.0 release notes describe initial shadNet 0.1.0 support and specifically call out online Bloodborne, but online availability remains title- and version-dependent. A game that boots offline can still reject an online session when the emulator and network component are out of sync.
What should I avoid when troubleshooting?
- Do not install third-party optimizer EXEs, registry patches, or driver-updater utilities.
- Do not download a replacement
vulkan-1.dllor repair DirectX for a Vulkan assertion. - Do not hand-edit Vulkan ICD registry entries.
- Do not disable thermal limits or undervolt to conceal a crash.
- Do not keep changing drivers after Vulkan 1.3 is proven and the compatibility entry says
status-nothing. - Do not use scene dumps, unofficial “ShadPS4 Plus” packages, Android APKs, or game-download links. Unofficial packages are a malware risk and are outside the project’s supported desktop releases.

How do I document a crash for a useful compatibility report?
Once the host checks are complete, capture the details that distinguish a setup error from a title limitation:
- shadPS4 build and whether it is stable or nightly;
- game CUSA serial, region, base version, and installed patch;
- CPU, selected GPU, driver version, and Vulkan
apiVersion; - whether Neo/Pro mode and add-ons are enabled;
- the exact stage of failure: launcher, pre-shader, post-shader, menu, or gameplay;
- the compatibility-list status and the time of any Event Viewer 1000/1001 entry.
Reproduce the fault with one setting changed, then consult the matching CUSA issue in the official compatibility project. This produces a useful report without labeling every black screen a driver bug.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is RPCS3 a PS4 emulator?
No. RPCS3 is the PlayStation 3 emulator. shadPS4 is the separate project for PlayStation 4 software; PS5 emulation is not a substitute with a comparable verified playable-game list.
Can I run shadPS4 on an Intel Mac?
No. The current project requirements list Apple M1 or newer with Rosetta 2 and state that Intel Macs are unsupported. A Mac that cannot meet that architecture requirement will not be fixed by changing game files.

Nightly builds can change emulator behavior and may regress a title that worked on stable v0.20.0. Keep a per-game version record and use QtLauncher Version Manager to return to the last known-good build.
Can I use any firmware files I find online for the sys_modules folder?
No. Firmware modules are copyrighted and should be dumped from a PS4 you own. Mixing files from different console firmware versions can cause “module not found” errors or inconsistent boot behavior.
How do I check whether a black screen is a known game limitation?
Find the game’s CUSA serial and search it in the official compatibility list. A status-nothing entry explicitly includes launch crashes and black-screen hangs, so a correctly configured Vulkan 1.3 system may still be unable to boot that title.
