On iPhone Duo, hinge automations are created in Shortcuts > Automation > Display > Opened or Closed. Build explicit behavior for opening and closing, use actions that set a known state instead of blindly toggling one, and verify the routine through repeated open-close cycles. The phone exposes only an open/close event to consumer Shortcuts; apps built with Apple’s hinge APIs can receive richer states and continuous angle updates.
Reliability also depends on physical setup. A case can obscure the outer display or restrict the hinge, and accessibility settings can affect how you open or unlock the device. The workflow below separates what Shortcuts can do now from what requires a developer-built app.

Use the Display automation trigger named Opened or Closed. The trigger marks a transition event; it is not a live stream of every hinge angle.
- Open Shortcuts and go to Automation.
- Choose the Display category, then select Opened or Closed.
- Choose the event option for opening, closing, or both if the interface presents both choices.
- Add the actions you want to run. For example, opening can set a known Focus, volume level, wallpaper, or app state; closing can restore a different known state.
- If both directions are available in one automation, keep the opening and closing paths explicit. If the screen is clearer when split, create one automation for opening and another for closing.
- Save the automation and perform a controlled check: open the Duo, close it, open it again, and confirm that each transition produces the intended result.
Keep the two directions reversible. An opening routine should not leave the closing routine guessing what happened previously; each path should establish the state it needs.

What actions make a hinge automation dependable?
The most dependable shortcuts are idempotent: running them repeatedly produces the same result rather than flipping between two unknown states.
Prefer “set” over “toggle”
Use an action that sets a Focus to a named mode, sets volume to a chosen level, applies a specific wallpaper, or opens a selected app. A toggle depends on the current state. If the phone receives another transition, or if you changed the setting manually, a toggle can move it in the wrong direction.
Give opening and closing different jobs
For instance, the open event can set a reading Focus and a comfortable volume, while the close event can set a work Focus or restore a lower volume. Avoid making both events perform the same toggle, because the result becomes difficult to predict after a missed or repeated transition.
Keep actions reversible
Choose a closing action that has a clear inverse on opening. This makes it easier to recover after you open the phone manually, change a setting, and then trigger the automation again.
Use a minimal first version
Start with one visible action, such as changing Focus or opening an app. Once that transition is reliable, add additional actions one at a time. A short chain is easier to diagnose than a long routine in which one unavailable or blocked action hides the real problem.
Can one shortcut handle both opening and closing?
It can when the automation editor exposes both event choices, but separate automations are often easier to audit. The important distinction is that Shortcuts receives an event boundary, not an arbitrary hinge-angle value.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOne automation with explicit paths
If the editor offers an open path and a close path, keep each path visibly separate and label the automation accordingly. Every action should be tied to one direction, with no ambiguous toggle shared by both paths.

Two automations for simpler recovery
Separate “Duo opened” and “Duo closed” automations make it obvious which behavior to disable when troubleshooting. They also let you test one direction without changing the other routine.
What the trigger does not provide
The consumer trigger does not establish that you can select a threshold such as 30 or 45 degrees. It reports the opening or closing event exposed by Shortcuts; angle-sensitive behavior belongs in an app using Apple’s hinge interfaces.
How should I test repeated transitions and lock-screen behavior?
Test transitions as a sequence, not just once. A shortcut that works on the first opening can still behave poorly after rapid reversals or when the phone is locked.
Recommended Free Tools
- With the Duo unlocked, open it and verify the opening action.
- Close it fully and verify the closing action.
- Open it again and check that the opening action sets the same intended state rather than inverting it.
- Repeat the sequence at a normal pace, then try a few quicker transitions to expose timing or repeatability issues.
- Repeat the checks while the device is locked. The available actions and their behavior are not established as identical in every lock-screen condition, so treat each action as something to verify rather than assume.
- If one action fails, remove later actions temporarily and test the routine with only the first action. Re-add actions individually after the first one behaves consistently.
These checks are user validation steps, not a guarantee that every action runs in every state. Shortcuts documentation describes the open/close trigger and examples, but does not establish universal availability or identical execution for every action while locked.
What is the difference between a Shortcuts trigger and a developer hinge API?
Shortcuts is a no-code event mechanism; Apple’s developer interfaces expose a richer, live hinge model to applications.
| Implementation | Information available | Best use | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shortcuts automation | Opened or closed event in the Display category | Setting Focus, wallpaper, volume, app state, or another shortcut action at a transition | No established consumer control for arbitrary angle thresholds |
SwiftUI app using onHingeChange |
High-level closed, partially open, and fully open states plus continuous hinge-angle updates | Interactive effects or behavior that responds as the hinge moves | Requires an app built with the developer API |
UIKit app using UIHingeInteraction |
High-level status and continuous angle updates | Custom UIKit interactions tied to live hinge movement | Requires app development; it is not a Shortcuts setting |
Apple describes hinge data as live information suited to interactions and effects. For layout decisions, developers should use the platform’s arrangement and region APIs rather than treating a raw angle as a substitute for layout logic.
How do I make a case and the outer display work with the automation?
Check the physical fit before blaming Shortcuts. A case can cover part of the outer display, alter touch framing, or interfere with complete opening and closing.

- Inspect whether the case overlaps the outer display edge or blocks taps near that edge.
- Open and close the Duo completely with the case installed. It should not resist the final part of travel or prevent the two halves from closing evenly.
- If the outer display is framed incorrectly by the case, open Settings > Display & Brightness > Shift Left Edge and enable the adjustment when appropriate.
- Run the same open-close verification with the case on and off. A routine that works bare but fails with the case points to physical interference rather than an action-setting error.
Do not continue using a case that forces the hinge, leaves the phone partly open, or causes the enclosure to press against the hinge area. A protective accessory must preserve full hinge travel as well as screen access.
Which accessibility settings affect opening and unlocking?
If opening the Duo or reaching the unlock control is difficult, review the Side Button accessibility options rather than changing the automation first.
Apple documents Settings > Accessibility > Side Button > Rest Finger to Open. This setting can change how you complete the opening or unlocking gesture, which may make manual verification easier. It does not create a new hinge trigger; it changes the access method you use while testing the existing one.
After changing the setting, repeat your normal open-close sequence. Keep the accessibility choice that allows you to operate the phone without pressing against the hinge or repeatedly interrupting the transition.

Work from the simplest cause to the most serious: event selection, action design, physical interference, then hardware condition.
The shortcut never runs
- Confirm that the trigger is under Shortcuts > Automation > Display and is specifically named Opened or Closed.
- Check that the automation is enabled and that you selected the intended direction.
- Test with one simple, visible action before adding a longer action chain.
The wrong result appears after a second opening
- Replace toggles with explicit set actions.
- Check that opening and closing paths are not both changing the same setting in opposite, undocumented ways.
- Repeat the sequence slowly, then at normal speed, to determine whether the problem is state logic or transition timing.
It works unlocked but not when locked
Do not assume lock-screen behavior is identical for every action. Test each action in the locked condition and redesign the routine around actions that remain available; the documented trigger alone does not establish that all actions execute identically while locked.
The hinge feels or sounds abnormal
Stop treating the issue as an automation problem if the Duo will not open or close completely, makes unexpected noise, has a loose hinge, has a bent or broken hinge, or has enclosure damage affecting hinge operation. Those are signs Apple identifies for support attention. Remove accessories that could be applying pressure, document what you observe, and seek service rather than forcing the hinge through additional tests.

How can developers build angle-aware behavior?
A developer can observe the hinge continuously rather than waiting for the Shortcuts event boundary. In SwiftUI, Apple provides the onHingeChange modifier; in UIKit, it provides UIHingeInteraction.

Both interfaces expose the high-level states closed, partially open, and fully open, along with continuous hinge-angle updates. That enables effects or interactions that respond while the device is moving, such as changing controls during a partial opening. It does not mean a consumer Shortcut can be configured with the same angle stream.
Use those live updates for interaction feedback, and use arrangement or region APIs when the goal is deciding where content belongs. Separating interaction effects from layout logic prevents an app from becoming dependent on a single raw angle.
What is the safest design for a daily routine?
For most users, the safest design is a small pair of event-driven automations with explicit, reversible set actions and a case that preserves full hinge travel.
- Choose one opening outcome and one closing outcome that you can see or measure.
- Implement the opening and closing paths explicitly in Shortcuts.
- Use set actions, not unknown-state toggles.
- Verify unlocked operation, locked operation, repeated transitions, and operation with the case fitted.
- Keep a developer-built app in mind only when your requirement depends on partial-open status or a specific hinge angle; Shortcuts does not establish that level of control.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will an iPhone Duo hinge automation still work after an iOS update?
Software updates can change labels or action behavior, so revisit the automation screen after a major update and confirm that the Display trigger still reads “Opened or Closed.” Re-run your normal transition checks before relying on the routine for an important workflow.
Can I trigger a Shortcut at a precise hinge angle?
The consumer Shortcuts trigger is documented as an open-or-close event, not as a user-configurable angle threshold. Precise angle handling requires an application using the developer hinge interfaces and is not established as a Shortcuts option.
What should I do before sending a Duo with hinge damage for service?
Remove the case, stop forcing the hinge, and record whether the problem is incomplete travel, noise, looseness, bending, or enclosure damage. Back up important data and provide those observations to the service provider so the physical fault is assessed separately from the automation.
Can a case make the automation seem inconsistent even when the shortcut is correct?
Yes. A case can change the outer-display edge or prevent a complete transition, so the phone may not register the same physical movement. Compare behavior with the case removed, then use Shift Left Edge if the accessory only changes display framing.
