Use the emulator’s virtual controller settings, not only the game window’s keyboard focus. In Cemu, choose Wii U GamePad under Input settings, select an input API and your controller, map every button, then save a profile. In Ryujinx or Ryubing, select Player 1, choose the input device, map the controls, apply the changes and save the profile. Both programs can accept keyboard input, but neither cited official guide publishes one universal Tears of the Kingdom keyboard layout, so keyboard players must create and save a custom map. A motion-capable controller is required for gyro-style actions; ordinary Xbox-style controllers work for buttons and sticks but do not provide motion controls in Cemu.
The phrase “PC port” usually refers to running the game through an emulator rather than an official native Windows release. This guide covers input configuration only and does not explain how to obtain game files, keys, firmware or circumvention materials.

A conventional gamepad is the simplest starting point because its analog sticks provide gradual movement and camera control with little remapping. Keyboard and mouse input is supported and can be fully customized, but keys are digital rather than analog and you must decide where every virtual-controller input belongs. If you need motion actions, use hardware with a gyroscope and configure the emulator’s motion source; a standard Xbox controller is not a motion solution in Cemu.
| Option | Strengths | Limitations and setup notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard XInput controller | Analog movement, familiar layout and generally low configuration friction | Works for ordinary buttons and sticks; no motion controls in Cemu |
| Switch controller, DualShock 4 or DualSense | Analog input plus motion hardware documented for Cemu’s SDL route | May require selecting SDL and enabling the correct motion source; compatibility can vary by operating system and emulator version |
| Dual Joy-Con pair | Motion-capable Nintendo-style setup | Ryujinx/Ryubing may require an external motion service such as BetterJoy or DS4Windows |
| Keyboard and mouse | Flexible key assignment; no gamepad required | Digital movement, no universal official TOTK layout and more time needed to map and test every action |
Choose a controller when analog movement and the least setup work matter most. Choose keyboard and mouse when customizable keys are more important, or when no gamepad is available. You can also keep both profiles and select the one you want before launching a session.

How do I configure a controller in Cemu?
Connect the controller before opening Cemu. Then configure the emulated Wii U GamePad, select the input backend that exposes your device, map all controls and save a named profile.
1. Connect the device first
Plug in or pair the controller before starting Cemu. If Cemu was already open when the device was connected, close and reopen the emulator after the initial setup so the operating system and Cemu can enumerate it cleanly.
Recommended Free Tools
2. Open Input settings
- Open Cemu’s Options or Settings menu.
- Choose Input settings.
- Set the emulated controller to Wii U GamePad. This matters because the game expects the Wii U controller model rather than a generic “keyboard” device.
3. Select an input API
Cemu documentation describes SDL for modern motion-capable devices and XInput for Xbox-style controllers. Start with the backend that matches the physical device. If the controller list is empty, return to this field and switch between the available APIs, then check the device selector again.
- SDL: the documented route for Nintendo Switch controllers, DualShock 4 and DualSense motion-capable setups.
- XInput: the usual choice for Xbox-style controllers and other devices presented to Windows as XInput.
The labels exposed by Cemu can change with project releases and operating-system drivers. Select the API that actually makes your device appear; do not change game files to solve an input-enumeration problem.
4. Choose the controller and map it
- Select the connected device from Cemu’s controller dropdown.
- Assign the left and right sticks, face buttons, shoulder buttons, triggers and D-pad.
- Assign stick-click and system inputs if they are offered by the mapping screen. Leaving an expected input blank can make an in-game action appear broken later.
- For a motion-capable controller, verify that the motion source is enabled in the same input configuration rather than assuming the gyro will activate automatically.
5. Name and save the profile
Enter a profile name that identifies the device and layout, then save it. A saved profile prevents you from rebuilding the map after changing devices or reopening Cemu. If an action is wrong in game, edit the virtual-controller profile and save a corrected version instead of altering random game files.
How do I configure a controller in Ryujinx or Ryubing?
Ryujinx and its Ryubing setup material use a player-and-device workflow: choose Player 1, select the physical input device, map the virtual controls, apply the configuration and save the profile.

1. Open the input configuration
Open the emulator’s input settings or controller-configuration window. The exact menu wording can differ between Ryujinx and Ryubing builds, but the required fields are the player selector, device dropdown and control-mapping interface.
2. Select Player 1
Set the player slot to Player 1. Mapping a device under another player can leave the game apparently unresponsive even though the bindings were entered correctly.
3. Select the input device
Choose the connected controller, keyboard or other device from the device dropdown. If it is not listed, reconnect it and reopen the input window before changing bindings.
4. Map every control
- Click the field for each stick, button, trigger and D-pad direction.
- Press or move the corresponding control on the selected device.
- Assign system or stick-click inputs when the interface presents them.
- For keyboard play, give every virtual-controller input an explicit key or mouse binding; do not assume an unassigned field will inherit a sensible default.
5. Apply and save
Apply the changes and save a profile. Confirm that the saved profile is selected for Player 1 before launching the game. Ryujinx/Ryubing documents keyboard, mouse, touch, Joy-Con and broad controller support, but the official setup material does not define one universal Tears of the Kingdom keyboard layout.

How do I create a keyboard-and-mouse layout?
Keyboard play is possible, but it is a custom virtual-controller profile rather than a single official key map. Build the layout around the game’s action groups, then test it in a safe area before committing to a long session.
Start with movement and camera
Assign movement to a familiar cluster of keys and camera control to the mouse or another comfortable set of keys. Keyboard keys provide on/off input, so movement is less granular than with an analog stick. A mouse can make camera adjustment more direct, but its horizontal and vertical axes still need to be assigned through the emulator’s mapping interface.

Assign the complete action set
Map face-button actions, shoulder buttons, triggers, stick clicks, D-pad directions and system buttons. Reserve easy-to-reach inputs for actions used repeatedly, such as jump, interact, aim and weapon actions. Avoid placing two high-frequency actions on keys that are difficult to press simultaneously.
Use a profile instead of changing files
Save the keyboard-and-mouse map as its own profile. Keeping a separate controller profile lets you switch methods without overwriting the gamepad arrangement, and it gives you a known layout to restore when experimenting.
Test in a safe area
- Load an area where an accidental input will not cause a major loss of progress.
- Check movement in all directions and verify camera movement independently.
- Test jump, interact, aim, weapon actions, D-pad functions, stick clicks and system buttons.
- Return to the emulator’s input window and correct any missing or uncomfortable binding.
Community discussions sometimes describe “controller plus keyboard” arrangements, but those reports are anecdotal. Treat any shared layout as a starting point and verify every binding in your own emulator version.
What controller works with motion controls?
Motion controls require a physical controller with motion hardware and an emulator path that can read it. Cemu documentation identifies Nintendo Switch controllers, DualShock 4 and DualSense as motion-capable through SDL. Xbox controllers still handle ordinary buttons and sticks, but Cemu documentation identifies them as lacking motion-control support.
Cemu motion setup
- Connect a motion-capable controller before opening Cemu.
- Open Input settings and select Wii U GamePad.
- Choose SDL as the input API when using a documented SDL motion-capable device.
- Select the controller and confirm that the motion source is enabled.
- Save the profile, then check a motion-dependent action in a safe area.
Motion, rumble and other advanced features do not necessarily behave identically across operating systems, drivers and emulator versions. A controller being listed does not by itself guarantee that every sensor feature will be available.
Ryujinx/Ryubing motion setup
Ryujinx/Ryubing supports motion controls in many configurations. The setup guide notes that a pair of Joy-Con controllers may need an external motion service such as BetterJoy or DS4Windows. If motion is missing, verify both the controller’s hardware and the motion-source setting before assuming the button map is faulty.

How should I set the stick deadzone?
Deadzone determines how far a stick must move before the emulator registers input. Ryubing documents 0.10 as its default and recommends increasing the value to at least 0.20 when unwanted drift occurs; that is a starting recommendation, not a universal requirement for every controller.
- Open the Ryujinx/Ryubing input profile for Player 1.
- Locate the left- and right-stick deadzone fields.
- Raise the affected stick to 0.20 or another value that stops movement while the stick is at rest.
- Apply and save the profile, then test slow movement and camera control.
A very large deadzone can make small, deliberate movements feel unresponsive. Increase it only as far as needed to suppress drift.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is my controller missing or not responding?
Most detection problems occur before the game receives input: the device was connected too late, the wrong backend is selected, or the profile is assigned to the wrong player. Work through the checks below in order.
The controller does not appear
- Reconnect the controller and reopen the emulator or its input window.
- In Cemu, switch between the available input APIs, especially SDL and XInput, then recheck the device list.
- In Ryujinx/Ryubing, confirm that the device dropdown is not still set to an unavailable device.
- Make sure the physical controller is visible to the operating system before troubleshooting the emulator.
The wrong action occurs
Return to the virtual-controller mapping and remap the affected input. Confirm that the intended profile is saved and selected. Editing unrelated game files will not correct a virtual-controller binding.

Adjust the deadzone, using Ryubing’s documented 0.20-or-higher recommendation as a starting point for drift. Test both sticks separately and save the profile after the change.
Motion does not work
- Confirm that the physical controller contains a gyro or other motion sensor.
- Check that the emulator’s motion source is enabled for the selected profile.
- For Cemu, do not expect motion from an Xbox controller.
- For dual Joy-Con use in Ryujinx/Ryubing, check whether an external motion service such as BetterJoy or DS4Windows is required.
Keyboard bindings do nothing
Confirm that the keyboard is assigned as the selected device, every required virtual-controller field has a key, and the profile is saved under Player 1 in Ryujinx/Ryubing. In Cemu, verify that the keyboard mapping belongs to the Wii U GamePad profile currently selected for the game.

What are the practical differences between a controller and keyboard?
The choice is mainly about analog precision, motion hardware and configuration effort.
| Concern | Controller | Keyboard and mouse |
|---|---|---|
| Movement | Physical analog sticks allow gradual movement and camera input | Keys are digital; mouse or additional bindings can handle camera input but require customization |
| Motion | Available only when the physical device and emulator path support it | Ordinary keyboard and mouse do not replace a gyro |
| Remapping | Buttons, sticks, triggers and D-pad can be reassigned in the emulator | Every virtual-controller input must be assigned deliberately |
| Setup effort | An XInput device is generally the simplest starting point | More profile design and testing, especially for camera and simultaneous actions |
| Best fit | Players who want console-like movement and minimal friction | Players who prefer custom keys or do not have a gamepad |
What should you check before a long play session?
- The emulator is using the intended virtual controller: Wii U GamePad in Cemu or the correct Player 1 profile in Ryujinx/Ryubing.
- The physical device appears under the selected input API or device dropdown.
- Both sticks, all face and shoulder buttons, triggers, D-pad directions, stick clicks and system inputs respond.
- The keyboard profile contains a key or mouse binding for every virtual-controller input you intend to use.
- Motion hardware and the motion source are enabled when a motion-dependent action is required.
- Stick deadzones prevent drift without making precise movement uncomfortable.
- The profile has been saved after the final change.
How we chose the setup recommendations
The recommendations follow the documented input paths for Cemu and Ryujinx/Ryubing: configure the emulator’s virtual controller, select the appropriate API or device, map the controls and save a reusable profile. Hardware advice is limited to capabilities identified by those setup materials, including Cemu’s SDL motion support, its lack of Xbox motion support, Ryubing’s deadzone guidance and the possible external-service requirement for dual-JoyCon motion. No universal keyboard layout is presented because the cited documentation does not publish one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play with only a keyboard, without a mouse?
The emulators can accept keyboard input, so a mouse is not inherently required for every binding. You will still need to assign camera control to keys or another available input, and digital camera movement may feel less natural than a mouse or analog stick.
Does Ryujinx support touch input for this setup?
Ryujinx/Ryubing documentation lists touch among its supported input types. You must still assign or enable the relevant touch input in the emulator profile, and touch support does not replace a gyro when the game expects motion.
Why does changing a key in one emulator not change it in the other?
Cemu and Ryujinx/Ryubing maintain separate virtual-controller profiles and use different configuration interfaces. A layout saved in one emulator must be recreated or independently mapped in the other.
Is there an official Tears of the Kingdom keyboard layout I can import?
The cited emulator documentation establishes remappable keyboard and mouse input but does not publish one universal official layout for this game. Treat community layouts as personal presets and verify each action after importing or recreating one.
