To automate website screenshots in OpenCode, add ScreenshotNeo as a remote MCP server at https://api.screenshotneo.com/mcp, authenticate with a Bearer API key stored in an environment variable, then verify the connection and call its screenshot tools. You can use OpenCode’s configuration file or its opencode mcp add command. This guide shows both methods, the available tools, how to check results, how ScreenshotNeo compares with a local browser MCP server, and what to do when setup fails.

What do you need before connecting ScreenshotNeo to OpenCode?

You need a current OpenCode installation, a ScreenshotNeo API key, network access to the hosted MCP endpoint, and a page that you are authorized to capture. ScreenshotNeo’s MCP endpoint is https://api.screenshotneo.com/mcp. Its documented authentication method is a Bearer token. OpenCode’s current v2 documentation describes remote MCP servers as Streamable HTTP connections and supports environment-variable references in request headers.

Have these items ready:

  • OpenCode: Install and launch the version you intend to use, then identify which configuration location that version reads.
  • ScreenshotNeo account and key: Create an API key through ScreenshotNeo. Treat it like a password and rotate it if it is exposed.
  • Network access: OpenCode must be able to reach the HTTPS endpoint. Corporate proxies, firewalls, or restricted execution environments can prevent the connection.
  • A permitted test URL: Start with a public page or another page for which you have explicit permission. A successful connection does not grant access to private content.
  • A secret-management plan: Keep the key in an environment variable or a secret manager rather than in a checked-in JSON file.

How do I add ScreenshotNeo as a remote MCP server in OpenCode?

Add a remote server entry with the MCP URL and an Authorization header that reads the key from your environment. The example below combines the configuration options documented by OpenCode and ScreenshotNeo; it is a configuration example, not a claim that the setup was executed.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

1. Store the API key outside the configuration file

In a Unix-like shell, set the environment variable before starting OpenCode:

export SCREENSHOTNEO_KEY='YOUR_SCREENSHOTNEO_KEY'

Replace the example value with your real key. Keep the variable available to the OpenCode process. On Windows, use the environment-variable mechanism appropriate to your shell or operating-system account, and make sure OpenCode is launched from a process that can read it. Do not print the value in logs, paste it into a prompt, or commit it to a repository.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Add the remote server to OpenCode’s configuration

Add this entry to the OpenCode configuration used by your installation. Preserve any other existing configuration in the file.

{
  "$schema": "https://opencode.ai/config.json",
  "mcp": {
    "servers": {
      "screenshotneo": {
        "type": "remote",
        "url": "https://api.screenshotneo.com/mcp",
        "oauth": false,
        "headers": {
          "Authorization": "Bearer {env:SCREENSHOTNEO_KEY}"
        }
      }
    }
  }
}

The server name, screenshotneo, is a local label. The URL identifies the hosted MCP endpoint. The header value uses OpenCode’s environment-variable reference syntax; the word Bearer and the space after it are part of the Authorization header format. The oauth value is set to false because this connection uses an API key, not an OAuth flow.

If your configuration already contains an mcp object or other servers, merge the screenshotneo entry into that object instead of replacing the file. Keep JSON punctuation valid, and do not add a second server entry with a different label unless you intentionally need two separate credentials or endpoints.

Alternative: add the server with the OpenCode CLI

If you prefer the CLI, OpenCode documents an equivalent remote-server pattern. Applied to ScreenshotNeo, the command is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
opencode mcp add screenshotneo
  --url https://api.screenshotneo.com/mcp
  --header 'Authorization=Bearer {env:SCREENSHOTNEO_KEY}'

Use either the configuration entry or the CLI method to add the server; avoid creating conflicting duplicate entries for the same connection. After running the command, restart or reload OpenCode if your installed version does not refresh MCP definitions immediately.

3. Verify the connection and available tools

  1. Run opencode mcp list and confirm that screenshotneo is listed.
  2. In OpenCode, open /mcps and confirm the server is connected and authenticated.
  3. Check that the server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
  4. Start with a harmless get_page_info request for a page you are authorized to access.
  5. Review the returned final URL and status before requesting an image or PDF.
  6. Ask OpenCode to call take_screenshot for an image or capture_pdf for a PDF.

OpenCode may normalize imported tool names using both the server name and tool name. Depending on the installed interface, names may appear similar to screenshotneo_take_screenshot, screenshotneo_get_page_info, and screenshotneo_capture_pdf. If a prompt referring to the short name fails, inspect the tool list and use the normalized name shown by your installation.

How do I automate a screenshot after setup?

Once the server is connected and its tools are available, ask OpenCode for a specific capture and include the URL, output type, viewport or device, and the page region you need. A clear prompt reduces ambiguity about what part of the page to capture and when the page is ready.

  • Use ScreenshotNeo to capture the full page at https://example.com as WebP.
  • Use ScreenshotNeo’s get_page_info tool for https://example.com and report the final URL and status.
  • Capture the pricing table as a PDF using ScreenshotNeo.
  • Take a mobile screenshot using the iphone_15 device preset.
  • Capture the element matching .checkout-summary after it appears, using the desktop viewport.
  • Capture the page in dark mode after the specified content is loaded, and return a PNG.

These are workflow prompts. They tell OpenCode what outcome to request; the exact argument names and defaults are determined by the tools exposed by your connected server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand the three primary tools

  • take_screenshot: Captures a URL or supplied HTML as an image. Relevant options include full-page capture, CSS-element selection, device presets, dark mode, waits, delays, content checks, and page cleanup. ScreenshotNeo supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP image output. The broader API also documents custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, custom headers, cookies, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture, and caching.
  • get_page_info: Returns page metadata such as the title, description, Open Graph information, final URL, status, and a preview. It is useful for confirming redirects, checking that the expected document loaded, and diagnosing a blank or blocked result before spending a capture request.
  • capture_pdf: Captures a page as a PDF. Documented controls include paper size, orientation, background rendering, margins, and page ranges. Use it for printable reports, invoices, documentation, or a specific section of a long page rather than forcing an image workflow to produce a document.

ScreenshotNeo’s API supports PNG, JPEG, WebP, and PDF output. Response headers can report page verdict, billing state, cache status, render time, quota information, and HTTP status. When automating a batch, record those values with the output so you can distinguish a fresh render from a cache hit, identify failed loads, and monitor remaining quota.

Make captures deterministic

Specify the viewport or device preset when comparing layouts. Use full-page capture when the entire document is required; use a CSS selector when only a component matters. Add a wait condition or delay for content that appears after JavaScript runs, and use a content check when a successful HTTP response could still contain an error page. Dark-mode settings, custom CSS, and page cleanup can change the visual result, so keep those choices consistent across regression captures.

For repeated jobs, consider asynchronous capture and bulk operations documented by ScreenshotNeo. Caching can reduce repeated rendering, but it also means a result may not reflect the newest page state. Check cache-status and render-time response information when freshness matters. Custom headers and cookies can support an authorized logged-in workflow; they must be limited to the account and data you are permitted to use.

What does ScreenshotNeo handle for page cleanup?

ScreenshotNeo documents visitor-like cookie and consent handling and cleanup for more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Individual cleanup steps can be turned off. This is useful when a clean product screenshot is needed, but it should not be assumed that every overlay or site-specific widget will be removed. If a banner is part of the page you need to document, disable the relevant cleanup behavior instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cleanup does not override access controls. A bot check, CAPTCHA, login wall, paywall, or explicit denial remains a boundary. Do not use custom cookies, scripts, or headers to evade a control, and do not ask OpenCode to continue collecting data after the site blocks the request.

How much does ScreenshotNeo cost?

ScreenshotNeo’s official 2026 product information lists a free allowance of 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Treat those figures as plan details that can change, and check the current account page for quota definitions, overage rules, and the treatment of asynchronous or bulk jobs.

Track usage when building an automated OpenCode workflow. A prompt that requests several viewport variants, formats, or pages can consume multiple screenshots. Response headers that expose billing and quota information help you identify consumption and avoid an unexpected limit. Caching may reduce repeated rendering, but you should not rely on it as a guaranteed way to avoid a bill or quota count.

ScreenshotNeo remote MCP versus a local browser MCP server

Both approaches can let an agent request browser-like captures, but they have different operational tradeoffs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Area ScreenshotNeo remote MCP Local browser MCP
Deployment Point OpenCode at a hosted Streamable HTTP endpoint. Install and run a browser process or MCP server on your machine or a managed host.
Authentication Use a ScreenshotNeo Bearer API key in an Authorization header. Use the local server’s credential model, which may involve no hosted API key or separate local secrets.
Runtime burden ScreenshotNeo manages browser rendering infrastructure. You maintain browser versions, drivers, fonts, dependencies, concurrency, and process health.
Output Image formats, PDF capture, metadata, and page-information tools. Depends on the local server and its browser integration.
Control Supports documented viewport, selector, wait, cleanup, headers, cookies, scripts, clicks, caching, asynchronous jobs, and bulk options. May offer deeper local control, but available options depend on the server you install.
Cost model Free monthly quota and paid screenshot volume. Software may be free, but you absorb machine, hosting, maintenance, and operational costs.
Privacy and location Pages and any supplied credentials are processed by the hosted service, so review its terms and your data-handling requirements. Rendering can stay inside infrastructure you control, although your local network and logging still require review.

Choose the hosted route when you want a simple remote endpoint, managed rendering, and predictable screenshot-oriented tools. Choose a local server when network isolation, local rendering, or custom browser instrumentation is more important than eliminating maintenance. In either case, capture only content you are authorized to process.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is a screenshot rather than an OpenCode MCP workflow, ScreenshotNeo also offers a direct API call. The following cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of https://example.com; create an API key and replace the placeholder before running it. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

The direct API can be appropriate for a script, scheduled job, or CI pipeline that does not need an AI agent to select tools. MCP is more convenient when OpenCode should inspect page information, choose between image and PDF capture, or vary device and selector settings from natural-language instructions.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. An MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

What should I check if OpenCode cannot connect?

Start with the failure symptom rather than changing unrelated settings. Verify the endpoint, environment variable, and Authorization header first; then check OpenCode’s server and tool status.

The server is not listed

  • Check that the configuration was added to the location used by your installed OpenCode version.
  • Validate the JSON structure and ensure the screenshotneo entry is nested under the expected MCP server object.
  • Run opencode mcp list again after adding the entry.
  • If you used the CLI, confirm the command completed and that the server name is screenshotneo.
  • Restart or reload OpenCode if the interface has not refreshed its MCP catalog.

Authentication fails

  • Confirm SCREENSHOTNEO_KEY is set in the environment available to OpenCode, not only in a different terminal session.
  • Check that the header is exactly Authorization: Bearer YOUR_KEY after the variable is resolved.
  • For API-key authentication, keep oauth set to false.
  • Check that the key is valid and has not been copied with extra spaces, quotation marks, or a trailing newline.
  • Never paste the key into a public issue, an OpenCode prompt transcript, or a committed configuration file.

The server connects but tools are missing

  • Confirm the URL is exactly https://api.screenshotneo.com/mcp.
  • Check OpenCode’s tool exposure mode and whether the MCP catalog request succeeded.
  • Look for normalized names that combine the server and tool names instead of expecting only the base tool name.
  • Verify that your installed OpenCode version supports the remote Streamable HTTP configuration shown here.
  • Check ScreenshotNeo’s current MCP compatibility notes if the endpoint responds but advertises no tools.

A call times out or captures the wrong content

  • For timeouts, review OpenCode’s startup, catalog, and execution timeout settings along with ScreenshotNeo’s page-load, selector-wait, and capture timeout behavior before increasing limits.
  • For incomplete or incorrect content, choose the needed viewport or device preset, full-page setting, CSS selector, wait condition, delay, or content check.
  • Use get_page_info to inspect the final URL and status, especially when redirects or login pages are involved.
  • If the page returns a CAPTCHA, access denial, blank result, or other block, do not treat that as a reason to bypass the site’s controls. Stop or use an authorized access route.

The output is stale, blank, or unexpectedly expensive

  • Check cache-status and render-time information to determine whether you received a cached result.
  • Confirm that the page had finished loading before the screenshot request ran.
  • Review billing and quota response headers after batch jobs or multiple device variants.
  • Reduce unnecessary formats, viewports, and repeated captures, while preserving the evidence or coverage your workflow requires.

What privacy and permission limits apply?

A screenshot request should be limited to pages and data you are authorized to access. Authentication options such as custom headers and cookies are tools for permitted workflows, not authorization to circumvent access controls. Review the site’s access conditions, prefer authorized interfaces, limit collection to what the task needs, and stop when blocked.

Consider where the page is rendered and what information is sent to the hosted service. Avoid including personal data, session cookies, or private headers unless the workflow has an appropriate legal and organizational basis. Redact or minimize sensitive values where possible, restrict who can invoke the OpenCode configuration, and remove temporary credentials after a job. For high-risk collection or ambiguous access rights, seek appropriate legal advice.

Operational checklist for a repeatable workflow

  1. Store the ScreenshotNeo key in a protected environment variable.
  2. Configure one remote server entry with the exact endpoint, Bearer header, and oauth: false.
  3. Run opencode mcp list and inspect /mcps.
  4. Confirm the three expected tools and their actual normalized names.
  5. Call get_page_info on an authorized test page.
  6. Choose the correct image or PDF tool, output format, device, selector, and wait behavior.
  7. Record status, cache, render-time, billing, and quota information for automated jobs.
  8. Stop on CAPTCHA, denial, or unexpected private content instead of trying to evade the control.
  9. Review current endpoint, tool, pricing, and OpenCode syntax details when upgrading either product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does setting oauth to false disable OAuth for every OpenCode server?

No. In this example it is a setting on the screenshotneo server entry, for the API-key authentication method shown. It is not a global instruction for unrelated MCP servers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can ScreenshotNeo remove consent banners without removing every other page element?

ScreenshotNeo says its individual cleanup steps can be turned off. Use the available capture options to keep only the cleanup behavior you want for an authorized page.

Can OpenCode use ScreenshotNeo to capture HTML that is not hosted at a public URL?

The documented take_screenshot tool accepts either a URL or supplied HTML. Whether a particular prompt exposes the HTML input directly depends on the tool parameters available in your OpenCode interface.

Do I need OAuth to connect ScreenshotNeo to OpenCode?

No. The documented setup uses a ScreenshotNeo API key in an Authorization: Bearer header, with oauth set to false for that server entry.

How can I tell whether OpenCode authenticated successfully?

Run opencode mcp list, open /mcps, and confirm the server is connected. Then inspect the advertised tools and make a harmless get_page_info call against an authorized URL.

Why do ScreenshotNeo tools have longer names in OpenCode?

OpenCode can normalize imported names by combining the server label and tool name. Names such as screenshotneo_take_screenshot are expected variants, depending on the installed interface.

Can I capture only one element instead of the whole page?

Yes. take_screenshot documents CSS-selector capture. Provide the selector and an appropriate wait or content condition so the element exists when rendering occurs.

Which formats can ScreenshotNeo return?

The documented API supports PNG, JPEG, WebP, and PDF. Use take_screenshot for image output and capture_pdf for document output, subject to the parameters exposed by your MCP connection.

Can I use cookies or custom headers with an MCP capture?

ScreenshotNeo documents custom headers and cookies for its wider API. Use them only for an authorized workflow, minimize sensitive data, and confirm that the connected MCP tool exposes those parameters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do when a page shows a CAPTCHA?

Stop and use an authorized access route. A screenshot integration does not authorize bypassing CAPTCHAs, bot checks, paywalls, login restrictions, or other site controls.

Is the free ScreenshotNeo allowance enough for testing?

The official 2026 product information lists 1,000 screenshots per month without a card. A test involving several pages, formats, or device presets can consume multiple screenshots, so monitor quota information.

When is a local browser MCP server a better choice?

A local server may be preferable when rendering must remain inside infrastructure you control or when you need local browser instrumentation. You then take responsibility for browser dependencies, updates, runtime health, and infrastructure cost.

The Bottom Line

Set SCREENSHOTNEO_KEY, register https://api.screenshotneo.com/mcp as an OpenCode remote server with a Bearer header and oauth: false, verify it in opencode mcp list and /mcps, then use get_page_info, take_screenshot, or capture_pdf with explicit viewport, wait, selector, and output requirements. Keep credentials private, monitor quota, and never use the workflow to bypass access controls.
