Change Safari’s download destination in Settings on iPhone and iPad, or in Safari’s General settings on Mac. On mobile, choose iCloud Drive, device storage, or another folder; on Mac, choose a fixed location or have Safari ask each time.
Change the download location on iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Safari.
- Tap Downloads.
- Choose iCloud Drive, On My iPhone, or Other to select a different folder.
With iCloud Drive selected, Safari saves downloads in its Downloads folder. Apple says those files are accessible on Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Apple’s iPhone Safari settings guide describes the available destinations.

Change the download location on iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Safari.
- Tap Downloads.
- Choose iCloud Drive, On My iPad, or Other to select another folder.
As on iPhone, iCloud Drive places files in its Downloads folder and makes them accessible from Apple devices using the same Apple Account. The local option is named On My iPad. See Apple’s iPad Safari settings guide for the iPad-specific options.

Change the download location on Mac
- Open Safari.
- Choose Safari > Settings, then click General.
- Open the File download location menu and choose a destination.
- To choose a destination for each download instead, select the option to ask where to save downloads.
These controls are in Safari, not the Mac’s System Settings. Apple lists them in its Safari General settings guide.

Choose a destination that fits how you use downloads
- Use iCloud Drive when you want to access downloads from Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Use On My iPhone or On My iPad when you want Safari to save to that device’s Downloads folder. Apple’s guidance does not say this local option automatically syncs or backs up files.
- Choose Other on iPhone or iPad to select another folder, such as a folder you already use for certain files.
- Ask where to save on Mac when you prefer to choose a destination for each download rather than keep one default folder.
Find a Safari download on iPhone or iPad
For a recent download, tap the Downloads button beside Safari’s search field, then tap the item. To browse the iCloud Drive Downloads folder, open the Files app, tap Browse > iCloud Drive > Downloads. If you chose local storage or another folder, open that selected destination instead. Apple’s Files guidance for finding downloads covers the iCloud Drive route and Safari’s recent-download list.
What happens to files already downloaded?
Changing the destination sets where Safari saves subsequent downloads; Apple does not say that changing it moves files already downloaded. If you move a downloaded file or change the download location afterward, Safari may no longer be able to find that file from its downloads list, as Apple explains in its Safari downloads guide. Open the folder where you moved the file to locate it.

If the setting labels look different
The steps above reflect Apple’s current guidance, including its iOS 27 iPhone guide. Labels and menu placement can differ on older operating-system versions; look for Safari’s Downloads setting on iPhone or iPad, or File download location in Safari’s General settings on Mac.
