AANT Home Buildings and Contents Standard offers a mix of building and contents protection, but the current public summary is not enough to judge the policy’s full terms or value. Before buying or renewing, match the policy’s issue or renewal date to the right Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), then check your Certificate of Insurance for the sections, options, sums insured and excesses that actually apply.
What this review can—and cannot—establish
AANT distributes this insurance under the CGU brand, and Insurance Australia Limited is identified as the issuer. AANT’s current product page describes selected features and limits, but it is not the contract. The linked PDS could not be retrieved for review, so this article does not treat the product summary as a complete statement of cover.

Start with the policy date. AANT’s PDS index says documents for policies issued before 16 June 2025 must be obtained from CGU. Find the issue or renewal date on your documents and obtain the matching PDS, including any supplementary documents, before relying on details from a different policy vintage.

AANT also says its information is general and does not take account of your objectives, financial situation or needs. Its product page directs customers to the PDS for exact terms and notes that limits, exclusions, conditions and excesses apply.

What Standard covers, according to AANT
The AANT Home Building and Contents page describes combined cover for buildings and contents against a range of incidents. AANT also markets building-only and contents-only products, so confirm which cover sections you are considering and which are selected on your Certificate of Insurance. A product page describing combined cover does not establish that both sections are included in your particular policy.
AANT lists flood, rainwater run-off, storm, storm surge and tsunami among covered causes of loss or damage. It also draws a significant boundary: CGU does not cover actions of the sea, such as tides and waves. These labels are not a substitute for the policy’s definitions and exclusions. Check the matching PDS for how it defines each event and how it treats the circumstances of your property.

How Standard compares with Plus
AANT positions Plus as the higher cover tier. The differences below are claims from its current product overview, not a complete comparison of policy wording or a guarantee that a particular claim will be paid.
| Feature | Standard | Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary accommodation | Up to 12 months, according to AANT’s current product page; eligibility and limits depend on circumstances. | Up to two years, according to AANT’s current product page; eligibility and limits depend on circumstances. |
| Safety net above sum insured | AANT’s product page does not state this feature for Standard. | AANT says Plus adds 25% on top of the sum insured; conditions and settlement terms must be checked in the applicable PDS. |
| Accidental damage and motor burnout | Listed as optional benefits for Standard; check the Certificate of Insurance to see whether either is selected. | AANT says Plus automatically includes some benefits, including accidental damage and motor burnout; confirm full inclusion details in the PDS and certificate. |
| Inclusion limits | AANT says Plus increases some inclusion limits, including food spoilage; the overview does not provide a complete schedule for Standard. | Some inclusion limits are higher than Standard, according to AANT; check the PDS for the applicable amounts and conditions. |
The public information does not establish which tier is better value for a particular home. Premiums, excesses, cover needs and policy terms depend on the property and the customer’s circumstances, and no current quote or complete PDS is available here for a price verdict.
Limits and optional benefits to check
AANT’s current page discloses selected figures, but they should not be mistaken for a comprehensive schedule of limits. Verify each against the PDS and Certificate of Insurance for your policy.
- Legal liability: AANT says cover is up to $20 million in some situations. Its summary distinguishes building liability at home from contents liability at home and elsewhere in Australia; check the policy wording for the exact scope.
- Portable contents: AANT says the limit is up to $10,000 per item unless the item is listed separately for a higher amount. It notes other limits outside Australia or New Zealand and exclusions, including certain items while in use.
- Motor burnout: AANT says motors may be covered up to 15 years after manufacture, subject to exclusions it identifies for items under warranty or used in a business. Check whether the benefit applies to your policy and the relevant definitions and conditions.
- Standard options: AANT lists accidental damage, valuable contents, motor burnout and portable contents as optional benefits. Do not assume an option is active unless it appears on your Certificate of Insurance.
Excesses may apply. AANT refers customers to their Certificate of Insurance for the excess that applies to them.

Is the sum insured enough?
AANT describes its building sum-insured calculator as guidance only and says customers are responsible for ensuring the insured amount reflects full replacement value. It also says that if the insured amount exceeds the actual cost of repair, replacement or rebuilding, CGU pays the actual cost—not the higher amount simply because it was selected.

Do not treat Plus’s stated 25% safety net as automatic full-rebuild protection. AANT describes an additional amount above the sum insured, but eligibility and settlement conditions must be checked in the applicable PDS. The Tasmanian Government’s home insurance fact sheet explains that sum-insured cover is capped at a chosen amount for repair or rebuilding and advises checking conditions attached to safety-net extensions.

Temporary accommodation and repairer choice
AANT says temporary accommodation may apply when the home cannot be lived in after a covered event. Its page distinguishes owners, tenants and homes in strata or similar schemes, and says the reasonable amount and applicability depend on the circumstances. The advertised time periods do not, by themselves, establish who qualifies or what costs are payable; check the relevant PDS.
AANT says customers may choose their own repairer. However, it says repairs by a non-partner repairer do not receive the same workmanship guarantee or repair management, and payment is limited to a fair and reasonable amount. CGU’s lifetime workmanship guarantee, as described by AANT, applies to authorised home repairs. Confirm the process and terms before arranging repairs.
Quick Recap
What to do before buying or renewing
- Identify the policy date. Check the issue or renewal date on your policy documents. If the policy was issued before 16 June 2025, AANT says to obtain its documents from CGU.
- Get the matching PDS. Read the document for your policy vintage and any supplementary documents; do not substitute wording from another policy or insurer.
- Check the Certificate of Insurance. Confirm whether you have building cover, contents cover or both, and whether optional benefits such as accidental damage, valuable contents, motor burnout and portable contents are selected.
- Review insured amounts and limits. Compare the building sum insured with a realistic rebuilding estimate and review contents valuations, item-specific limits, any safety net and relevant excesses.
- Read the event definitions and exclusions. Pay particular attention to flood, run-off, storm, storm surge, tsunami and the stated exclusion for actions of the sea.
- Compare tiers and quotes on the same basis. Use the same building estimate and contents valuation when comparing Standard, Plus or other policies. Compare exclusions, sub-limits, excesses and conditions as well as headline premiums.
