Short answer: Yes, if you care about detailed sound, a secure and comfortable redesign, modern wireless features, and earbuds you can keep in service after their batteries age. The MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 (MTW5) launches in the US at $299.95 with a one-year warranty, matching the premium tier while adding user-replaceable batteries in both earbuds and the charging case. Its main weakness is noise cancellation: it is effective, but Sony, Bose, and Apple alternatives reduce more noise. Battery life is excellent with ANC disabled, but real ANC-on endurance is closer to six hours per charge than the advertised 12.
That makes the MTW5 a particularly strong long-term ownership choice, not an automatic winner for commuters who rank absolute ANC performance first.

What is new about the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 5?
Sennheiser announced the MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 on August 20, 2026. In the United States, Sennheiser Hearing lists it at $299.95 with a one-year warranty. The headline change is serviceability: owners can replace the batteries in both earbuds and in the charging case using a compact screwdriver, rather than treating battery degradation as the end of the product.
Sennheiser product manager Frank Foppe says the goal was to bring “the larger-than-life sound and connected technology of the MOMENTUM series into a remarkably compact format.” Company president of consumer hearing Lilika Beck calls the combination of compact size, high-fidelity acoustics, and a replaceable battery “a major breakthrough.” In practical terms, the MTW5 keeps the series’ premium sound focus while addressing the most common reason true-wireless earbuds are discarded.
#1 Best Overall
- Signature Sennheiser Sound, Refined: Experience brilliant, emotionally rich audio with a high fidelity audiophile-grade 7mm TrueResponse driver, meticulously tuned to deliver exceptional clarity, detail, and natural balance at any volume.
- Audiophile Grade Wireless Audio: Advanced Bluetooth codecs including aptX Lossless, aptX Adaptive, and AAC preserve every detail, so music, movies, and games sound immersive, dynamic, and true to the source.
- Exceptional Battery Life: Enjoy up to 40 hours of playtime with on-the-go charging from the case. A replaceable battery extends product lifespan, helping reduce electronic waste while delivering years of premium sound.
- Built For Life: The secure-fitting ergonomic design assures superb wearing comfort and uncompromised audio enjoyment in any environment. Dust- and splash-resistant protection (IP54 rating) lets your audio accompany all your adventures.
- Clearer Calls, Smarter Microphones: Digital beamforming microphones, plus a bone conduction mic, and AI voice isolation keep your voice clear and natural on calls, even in busy environments, at home or on the move.
The physical redesign also changes the fit. The MTW5 drops the MTW4’s stability fins, yet testing from RTINGS found the new model more comfortable and stable. Build quality is described as sturdier, and each earbud weighs 7 grams. An IP54 rating provides protection against dust and light water splashes; it is not an invitation to submerge the earbuds.
How long does the MTW5 battery last with ANC?
The answer depends heavily on whether active noise cancellation is enabled. Sennheiser claims up to 12 hours per earbud and up to 40 hours with the charging case when ANC is off. Independent testing puts ANC-on endurance near six hours per earbud and about 25 hours total.

| Condition | Battery figure | Who reported it and how to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| ANC off | Up to 12 hours per earbud; up to 40 hours including the case | Sennheiser’s 2026 specification; “up to” is a best-case claim rather than a guaranteed runtime. |
| ANC on | Approximately six hours per earbud; about 25 hours total | What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 estimate in normal listening conditions. |
| ANC-on controlled test | 6 hours 17 minutes | SoundGuys’ 2026 playback measurement after two weeks of use. |
The gap between 12 hours and roughly six hours is normal for ANC-equipped earbuds: microphones, cancellation processing, radio activity, volume, codec choice, and temperature all consume additional power. For a workday, the realistic planning number is around six hours with ANC enabled. The case still provides several additional charges, but the 40-hour headline should be reserved for ANC-off listening at the conditions Sennheiser used.
Because the case battery is replaceable too, owners are not limited to replacing only the cells in the earbuds. That matters when the case begins losing capacity first, a failure pattern that can otherwise make a healthy pair inconvenient to use.
How does the MTW5 sound?
The MTW5’s strongest performance area is audio quality. What Hi-Fi? describes a crisp, nimble, detailed presentation, while TechRadar reports a wide soundstage with smooth, resolved audio. SoundGuys also found the earbuds sound good overall. These descriptions point to an energetic, high-resolution tuning rather than a deliberately soft or heavily bass-boosted presentation.
The earbuds use 7mm dynamic drivers. Detail retrieval is a clear advantage for acoustic recordings, layered pop, and instrumental music where separation matters. The trade-off is in the highest frequencies: What Hi-Fi? and SoundGuys both caution that treble-sensitive listeners may find the top end etched or more forward than comfortable. If you are sensitive to bright cymbals, vocal sibilance, or aggressive upper harmonics, auditioning the MTW5 or adjusting its equalizer is sensible before committing.

Codec support is unusually broad for a premium true-wireless pair. The MTW5 supports aptX Lossless and aptX Adaptive in addition to standard Bluetooth audio, and it includes Dolby Atmos head-tracked spatial audio. Lossless playback still depends on a compatible source device and listening conditions; the earbuds cannot force a phone or computer to transmit a codec it does not support.
Is the MTW5 ANC as good as Sony, Bose, or Apple earbuds?
No. The MTW5’s ANC is effective, especially in lower-frequency noise, but the available comparisons consistently place Sony, Bose, and Apple alternatives ahead for absolute isolation. SoundGuys measured just under 85% perceived-noise reduction with ANC enabled and about 71% reduction from passive isolation alone. RTINGS specifically notes improved bass-range ANC over the MTW4, so this is a meaningful upgrade rather than a token feature.
The important distinction is between “good enough” and “best in class.” On trains, aircraft, and busy streets, the MTW5 can make background noise substantially quieter and let you listen at lower volume. Sony and Bose models are the safer choices when the primary objective is maximum attenuation, particularly for constant low-frequency engine noise. Apple’s leading alternatives also retain an ANC advantage according to TechRadar, although the best choice for an iPhone owner may depend on ecosystem features not evaluated in these tests.
Fit affects the result. A poor seal can erase much of the passive isolation that the MTW5 otherwise provides, so try more than one ear-tip size before judging the electronics. The redesigned shell was found more stable than the MTW4 despite removing the fins, which should help maintain a consistent seal during walking and commuting.

Are the MTW5 comfortable and durable enough for daily use?
At 7 grams per earbud, the MTW5 is light for a premium model. RTINGS found it more comfortable and stable than the MTW4, and TechRadar likewise reports a comfortable fit. Removing the stability fins reduces pressure points for some ears, while the revised shape still holds securely for everyday movement.
The IP54 rating covers dust ingress and water splashes. That is suitable for commuting and ordinary workouts where the earbuds may encounter sweat or light rain, but it does not cover swimming, showering, or deliberate immersion. Dry the charging contacts before placing wet earbuds in the case.

What connectivity and smart features does the MTW5 include?
Bluetooth 6.0 is the wireless foundation. The feature set includes aptX Lossless, aptX Adaptive, multipoint, Google Fast Pair, Microsoft Swift Pair, and Dolby Atmos head-tracked spatial audio.
- Bluetooth 6.0: the current radio platform listed for the MTW5.
- aptX Lossless and aptX Adaptive: higher-quality and adaptive transmission modes for compatible source devices.
- Multipoint: lets the earbuds maintain connections to more than one device, useful when moving between a phone and a computer.
- Google Fast Pair: simplifies pairing with supported Android devices.
- Microsoft Swift Pair: provides a similar streamlined connection flow on compatible Windows PCs.
- Dolby Atmos head tracking: keeps a spatial-audio soundstage anchored as you move your head, when the content and playback device support it.
SoundGuys reports stable everyday connectivity, including multipoint operation. The published material confirms support for both aptX Lossless and multipoint, but does not establish whether every phone can use the two features simultaneously; codec negotiation can vary by source device and operating system.

Yes, the design is specifically intended to let owners replace the cells in both earbuds and the charging case. Sennheiser says the job can be performed with a compact screwdriver. That is a major difference from conventional sealed true-wireless products, where a worn battery usually means replacing the entire pair.
The available launch information does not publish replacement-battery pricing, regional part numbers, or a complete service procedure. Treat the feature as a repairability advantage, not as a promise that inexpensive parts will be available everywhere. Before opening a unit, check Sennheiser’s current instructions and the warranty terms for your region. The listed warranty is one year, but the supplied product information does not explain how self-service affects coverage.
In long-term ownership terms, replaceability changes the calculation. A pair that still sounds excellent after two or three years can receive fresh cells instead of becoming electronic waste. The case battery being serviceable is especially valuable because a degraded case can limit an otherwise healthy pair. It also makes buying the MTW5 more defensible than choosing a similarly priced model solely on launch-day battery figures.
How does the MTW5 compare with Sony WF-1000XM6, Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen), and Technics EAH-AZ100?
Choose among these models by deciding which compromise you can tolerate: the MTW5 favors sound and repairability, Sony and Bose prioritize stronger ANC, and Technics emphasizes endurance and advanced multipoint.

The table does not make one universal winner. If you listen critically and expect to keep your earbuds for years, the MTW5’s combination of tuning, comfort, and replaceable cells is distinctive. If you fly frequently and want the quietest cabin, compare Sony and Bose first. If long runtime, LDAC, and three-way multipoint matter more than serviceability, Technics deserves a close look.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the MTW5 worth $299.95?
At $299.95 in the US, the MTW5 is worth the price for buyers who value ownership beyond the first battery cycle. The strongest justification is not a single specification; it is the combination of detailed sound, a stable redesign, broad connectivity, and the ability to replace batteries in the earbuds and case.
The value is less compelling if ANC is your only priority. Sony, Bose, and Apple alternatives reduce more noise, and Sony is also reported to offer longer battery life. Budget-sensitive shoppers should also compare discounted previous-generation Momentum True Wireless 4 units, provided the lower price outweighs the MTW5’s repairability and fit improvements.
Who should buy the Momentum True Wireless 5?
Buy it if you prioritize long-term ownership
- You want batteries that can be replaced rather than a sealed product that must be discarded.
- You prefer a detailed, spacious sound and can tolerate a potentially bright treble presentation.
- You need multipoint plus modern Android and Windows pairing features.
- You want a comfortable, stable design without the MTW4’s fins.
Choose another model if your priority is maximum isolation
- You spend much of your time on aircraft, trains, or beside loud machinery.
- You want the longest possible ANC-on runtime from the available comparisons.
- You are highly sensitive to upper-treble energy and cannot audition or equalize the earbuds.
- You require a published replacement-parts program and service pricing before buying.
How should you evaluate the MTW5 before keeping it?
- Confirm the fit first. Try the supplied ear tips and walk for several minutes. A stable seal improves both passive isolation and bass response.
- Test ANC in your real environment. Use the earbuds on a commute or in a busy room rather than judging only in silence.
- Check your source-device support. Verify that your phone or computer supports the codec you intend to use; aptX Lossless is not universal.
- Try multipoint with your actual devices. Switch between your phone and computer to confirm that call and media handoffs behave as expected.
- Listen for treble fatigue. Use familiar recordings with cymbals and sibilant vocals at a moderate volume.
- Keep the repair plan realistic. Replacement batteries are the key longevity benefit, but launch information does not yet state parts cost or availability in every market.
What is the final verdict on the MTW5?
The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 5 is a significant upgrade because it improves the everyday fit and makes the most failure-prone components replaceable without abandoning the series’ detailed sound. Its measured ANC-on battery life is close to six hours, and its noise cancellation is good rather than dominant. At the same $299.95 premium position, it is the better choice for listeners who want earbuds they can maintain for years; ANC-first buyers should compare Sony, Bose, and Apple alternatives before deciding.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the MTW5 support aptX Lossless on every phone?
No. The earbuds include aptX Lossless, but the source phone or computer must also support that codec. If the device does not, playback falls back to another available Bluetooth format.
Can I use aptX Lossless and multipoint at the same time?
The MTW5 specifications confirm both features, but the supplied product information does not establish simultaneous operation across every device combination. Codec negotiation and multipoint behavior can depend on the phone, computer, and operating system.
Is an IP54 rating safe for swimming or showering?
No. IP54 covers dust and water splashes, not immersion. Keep the earbuds out of pools and showers, and dry the charging contacts before returning them to the case.
What if replacement batteries are not sold in my country?
Sennheiser designed the MTW5 for user-replaceable batteries, but launch information does not list regional parts pricing or availability. Check the local service page and warranty terms before relying on replacement as your long-term ownership plan.
