A semi-custom RDNA 5 chip would be a gaming processor designed jointly by AMD and a console or handheld maker, rather than a retail Radeon card dropped into a box. The customer could shape the balance of CPU and GPU resources, unified memory, display outputs, storage and I/O, security, thermals, software support and manufacturing cost around one device. That can deliver better platform-level efficiency and a more predictable target for developers, but it also makes the silicon less interchangeable and impossible to upgrade like a desktop graphics card.
AMD has confirmed semi-custom SoCs in the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S and X, while Microsoft says its next-generation Project Helix console will use a custom AMD SoC. No cited official source confirms an RDNA 5 semi-custom product’s customer, specifications, launch date, price or benchmark, so every RDNA 5-specific conclusion remains conditional.

What does semi-custom mean for a gaming chip?
Semi-custom means AMD and the platform owner co-engineer a chip for a particular product. It sits between an off-the-shelf processor and a completely new design: AMD supplies proven CPU, GPU and SoC technology, while the customer selects or modifies the combination needed for its console, handheld or other gaming system.
AMD describes semi-custom products as deeply co-engineered with customers. The work can range from a complex customized SoC to a more modest adaptation or integration of an existing CPU, APU or GPU product. In practical terms, the buyer is commissioning a system design, not purchasing a standard component by the unit.

What the customer can tune
- Compute balance: The number and arrangement of CPU cores, GPU resources and fixed-function blocks can be chosen for the target workload.
- Power and cooling: Clocks, voltage behavior and physical layout can be planned around a console’s fixed thermal envelope or a handheld’s battery and cooling limits.
- Memory: The SoC can be built around the platform’s unified-memory capacity, bandwidth, controller arrangement and allocation rules.
- I/O: Storage controllers, display outputs, peripheral interfaces, security functions and system interconnects can be integrated rather than added as generic expansion parts.
- Software: Firmware, drivers, graphics APIs, upscaling, frame-generation and developer tools can be aligned with one stable hardware target.
- Economics: Die size, manufacturing process, package choices and production volumes can be balanced against the product’s cost objectives.
The result may still use recognizable AMD technologies, but its exact combination is owned by the platform design. Two chips based on the same graphics family can therefore behave differently because their memory, clocks, firmware and surrounding SoC are different.
Is a semi-custom RDNA 5 chip the same as a Radeon graphics card?
No. A retail Radeon card is a standardized product intended to work across many compatible PCs; a semi-custom SoC is an integrated platform component built for one customer’s system. Shared architecture terminology can indicate a common technology lineage, not identical specifications or performance.
| Comparison | Semi-custom gaming SoC | Retail Radeon GPU |
|---|---|---|
| Platform scope | Designed with a console or handheld maker for one defined device family | Standardized add-in or mobile product sold for a broad PC market |
| Performance-per-watt goal | Can be tuned for a fixed power, cooling and acoustics envelope | Designed around published product tiers and a range of PC systems |
| Memory and I/O | Memory controllers, unified memory and platform interfaces can be integrated into the SoC | Uses the card or system memory arrangement specified for that retail model |
| Feature integration | CPU, GPU, media, display, security and customer-specific acceleration can share one design | Focuses primarily on the graphics processor and its standard board interfaces |
| Software support | Drivers, APIs and tools can target a stable, known device | Must support a broad range of PC configurations and operating-system paths |
| Manufacturing and price | Requires customer volume and up-front co-design investment; public pricing is not stated for an RDNA 5 implementation | Has a retail model, published specifications and a user-purchase price |
| Upgradeability | Normally fixed inside the console or handheld | Generally replaceable when the host system supports a compatible card |
| Availability | Available through the finished platform, not normally as a separate part | Sold as a consumer component through the PC market |
AMD’s Radeon RX 9000-series is a useful real-world contrast because AMD’s 2025 annual-report material identifies those retail graphics products as RDNA 4. That does not establish a retail RDNA 5 card, nor does it make a future semi-custom RDNA 5 SoC equivalent to a Radeon product.
Why do consoles use custom AMD chips instead of desktop GPUs?
A console has one hardware target for its entire generation. That allows the manufacturer and AMD to optimize the complete system instead of buying a general-purpose graphics card and designing around its fixed assumptions.
Power and thermals
A desktop card can draw power from a large supply and use substantial cooling. A living-room console has a defined enclosure, fan profile, noise target and lifetime requirement; a handheld adds battery runtime and skin temperature. A semi-custom design can spend silicon and firmware effort where that fixed envelope produces the most useful game performance. This is an engineering opportunity, not a guarantee that every custom chip is faster than every retail GPU.
Unified memory and data movement
Console developers can target a known memory pool and bandwidth arrangement. The SoC, memory controllers, CPU, GPU and storage path can be planned together, reducing the need to support the many memory and driver combinations found on PCs. The trade-off is that the platform owner must choose the capacity and bandwidth years before consumers can upgrade them.

Stable software target
Console APIs and developer kits can be built around one known GPU configuration. AMD and the platform owner can align shader compiler behavior, driver updates, upscaling, frame-generation and ray-tracing support with the console’s life cycle. Developers still need to optimize for the actual limits of the machine, but they do not have to account for the enormous hardware variation of the PC market.
What is known about RDNA 5 itself?
AMD’s official RDNA material presents RDNA as a family of graphics architectures that advances across generations. The material describes ray-tracing support, performance and power-efficiency improvements, and chiplet technology in RDNA 3. Those family-level points explain the technology AMD could draw from; they do not publish a specification for a semi-custom RDNA 5 chip.
The cited official information does not establish an RDNA 5 compute-unit count, clock rate, memory configuration, ray-tracing design, chiplet arrangement, upscaling implementation, benchmark, price or launch date. It also does not name a customer for an RDNA 5 semi-custom part. Treating an architectural expectation or an online rumor as a shipping specification would overstate what is confirmed.
How to read an RDNA 5 claim
- If AMD names RDNA 5 in a product announcement, check whether it is describing a retail GPU, an embedded part or a customer-specific SoC.
- If a console maker says it uses a custom AMD SoC, that confirms the co-design relationship but not the graphics architecture unless the announcement names it.
- A feature such as ray tracing or frame generation must be tied to the particular implementation; the presence of that feature in one RDNA generation does not prove its form in another.
- Performance comparisons require the final clocks, memory system, software version and workload. None of those figures is published for an RDNA 5 semi-custom product in the cited sources.
Which confirmed systems use AMD semi-custom silicon?
AMD identifies the PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series S and X as products powered by semi-custom AMD SoCs. These are confirmed examples of the business and engineering model, not evidence that either system contains RDNA 5.
PlayStation 5
AMD lists the PlayStation 5 as a semi-custom SoC product. The console combines processor, graphics, memory and platform functions in a design created for Sony’s fixed hardware target. Public confirmation of the semi-custom relationship does not, by itself, provide a specification for any future PlayStation system.
Xbox Series S and Series X
AMD likewise identifies both Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X as powered by semi-custom AMD SoCs. The two products illustrate how one supplier relationship can support different platform configurations, but they should not be used to infer the design of a later generation.
Project Helix
Microsoft’s Xbox Wire announcement says Project Helix, its next-generation first-party Xbox console, is powered by a custom AMD SoC and is co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR. Microsoft says alpha hardware for developers is planned to begin in 2027. The cited announcement does not name the exact GPU architecture, compute resources, memory arrangement, price or consumer launch date, so it does not confirm RDNA 5.

Would a semi-custom RDNA 5 chip make a future PlayStation or Xbox faster?
It could improve the balance of performance, power and features, but the phrase semi-custom does not guarantee a speed increase. The final result depends on the design choices the platform owner makes: GPU resources, CPU allocation, memory bandwidth, clocks, cooling, storage behavior and software.
A customer might prioritize more ray-tracing capacity, a wider memory path, faster asset streaming or better image reconstruction instead of maximum rasterization throughput. A handheld might choose lower clocks and longer battery life. Those are different optimization targets, and a chip can be excellent for one without leading every benchmark.
The most defensible expectation is system-level consistency. If AMD and the platform owner align hardware and software from the start, developers can target the same memory behavior, graphics features and API extensions throughout the platform’s life. Whether that translates into higher frame rates, higher image quality or shorter loading depends on the undisclosed implementation.
How would memory, I/O and software co-design affect games?
Graphics performance is only one part of a console experience. Semi-custom planning lets the customer decide how data moves through the entire machine.
Memory decisions
Capacity determines how many assets and rendering buffers can remain resident; bandwidth affects how quickly the GPU and CPU can consume them; allocation rules determine how much is available to games versus the operating system. A unified arrangement can simplify sharing between CPU and GPU, but it cannot be expanded by the owner later.
Storage and streaming
A custom storage path can coordinate the SSD controller, decompression hardware, memory and game engine. If the platform maker designs those links together, developers may stream assets according to predictable latency and bandwidth. The benefit is tied to the whole platform, not merely to the RDNA graphics block.
Display and media
Display engines, video decode and encode, variable-refresh behavior and output connectors can be selected for the console’s intended televisions or portable panel. These decisions influence supported resolutions and capture features even when the GPU architecture is unchanged.

Developer tooling
Stable hardware enables profiling tools, shader compilers and performance guidance specific to one target. Microsoft says Project Helix is being co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR, an example of the software relationship that accompanies custom silicon. The statement does not quantify the resulting performance.
What is the difference between a custom SoC and an off-the-shelf GPU?
An off-the-shelf GPU is a finished component with a defined interface and a broad customer base. A custom SoC is a platform’s central silicon design, where the graphics block is only one coordinated part.
| Question | Custom SoC | Off-the-shelf GPU |
|---|---|---|
| Who defines the complete system? | AMD and the platform owner together | The chip vendor defines the product; the system builder integrates it |
| Can the memory design be changed for one console? | Yes, within the agreed engineering and manufacturing plan | Only within the interfaces and memory specification of the retail model |
| Can an owner replace it later? | Normally no; it is soldered into the platform | Often yes in a compatible desktop or external system |
| What determines software support? | A controlled platform stack maintained for the device | Operating-system, driver and application compatibility across many systems |
| What does an architecture label tell you? | The technology family, not the complete SoC specification | The graphics family, still subject to the model’s exact specifications |
Could a semi-custom RDNA 5 chip power a handheld?
Yes, that is a plausible use of the model, but no cited official source confirms an RDNA 5 handheld product. A handheld customer could ask for a compact SoC that balances GPU throughput with battery duration, passive or low-noise cooling, fast suspend and resume, wireless and display interfaces, and a unified memory budget.
The same integration that helps a handheld fit inside a small enclosure can limit peak performance. Fewer GPU resources, lower clocks or a smaller memory system may be sensible choices for battery life. A handheld therefore should be judged against its power target and display, not against a desktop card that operates under a much larger thermal budget.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What remains unknown about a semi-custom RDNA 5 design?
The following details are unresolved in the cited official material:
- The customer or customers commissioning the chip.
- Whether any announced product actually uses RDNA 5.
- GPU compute-unit count, clock range and configuration.
- CPU architecture and core count.
- Memory capacity, type, bandwidth and unified-memory allocation.
- Ray-tracing, upscaling, frame-generation and media-engine implementation.
- Manufacturing process, package design, power target and cooling requirement.
- Consumer price, launch date, regional availability and retail part number.
- Independent benchmarks under repeatable conditions.
These are not minor omissions. They determine how a chip performs, what it costs to manufacture and which games can exploit it. Until AMD or the platform owner publishes them, an RDNA 5 semi-custom announcement should be read as a design possibility rather than a product specification.
What should buyers and developers take from the announcement?
For buyers
Look for the finished console or handheld’s published resolution targets, frame-rate modes, storage capacity, display support, backward compatibility and software features. The words custom AMD SoC or RDNA 5 may explain the design relationship, but they do not replace those practical specifications.

For developers
Wait for the official development hardware and SDK documentation before budgeting memory, ray-tracing workloads or reconstruction techniques. A named architecture can guide early planning, while the dev kit reveals the clocks, available memory and API behavior that determine shipping code.
For PC upgraders
Do not assume a semi-custom console chip will be sold as a compatible desktop card. Its package, firmware, memory arrangement and I/O may be inseparable from the platform. A retail Radeon product remains the relevant category when user replacement and broad PC compatibility matter.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How should future claims about RDNA 5 be evaluated?
- Identify the source: Prefer an AMD filing, product page or platform owner’s announcement over an unattributed specification.
- Separate confirmation from projection: A custom AMD SoC announcement confirms a relationship; it does not confirm RDNA 5 unless the architecture is named.
- Check the product class: Retail GPU, console SoC, handheld SoC and embedded design have different power and memory constraints.
- Demand the surrounding specifications: Architecture alone cannot establish performance without memory, clocks, cooling and software details.
- Use dates carefully: Microsoft’s planned 2027 start for Project Helix developer alpha hardware is a development milestone, not a consumer launch date.
What does this mean in one sentence?
A semi-custom RDNA 5 chip would mean AMD graphics technology tailored as part of a complete gaming platform, offering the possibility of better efficiency and tighter hardware-software coordination while sacrificing the interchangeability, upgrade path and transparent specifications of a retail GPU.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a semi-custom console SoC be upgraded like a PC graphics card?
Usually not. It is normally soldered to the system board and designed with the console’s memory, firmware, power delivery and cooling, so replacing only the graphics portion is impractical.
Does semi-custom silicon automatically make a console cheaper?
No. Co-design requires engineering work, validation and a manufacturing commitment. Large production volume can spread those costs, but the final retail price also depends on memory, storage, cooling, software and the rest of the console.
When will RDNA 5 gaming hardware launch?
No launch date is confirmed in the cited official material. Microsoft has said Project Helix developer alpha hardware is planned to begin in 2027, but it has not identified the GPU architecture or announced a consumer release date.
Recommended Free Tools
Can a retail Radeon card have the same RDNA 5 features as a custom console chip?
It could share some architectural technology if AMD releases both, but feature support and performance would still depend on the specific model, memory system, firmware and software stack. An architecture name alone does not establish equivalence.
Why might two consoles using AMD graphics perform differently?
Their customers can choose different GPU resources, memory bandwidth, clocks, CPU allocations, storage paths and image-quality targets. Semi-custom design allows those trade-offs, so the supplier name or graphics family does not determine the complete result.
