Self-hosting works reliably when you treat it as an operating system, not a one-time installation. First, DNS sends your hostname to the server; a reverse proxy receives web traffic on ports 80 and 443 and forwards each hostname to the right private service; TLS protects the client connection; backups provide an exit when hardware, software, or human error causes loss; and updates are performed with monitoring and a recovery plan. For a normal public HTTPS setup, your domain needs A and/or AAAA records pointing to the server, ports 80 and 443 must reach the proxy, and the proxy must have persistent writable storage for certificates. Keep databases and administration dashboards private, and periodically prove that a fresh machine can be restored from your backups.
What are the essential parts of a self-hosted service?
A typical installation has five layers. The domain name is the address layer, the reverse proxy is the public front door, TLS is the encryption layer, application containers or services do the actual work, and backups plus maintenance keep the system recoverable.

- DNS: A record maps a hostname to an IPv4 address. An AAAA record maps it to an IPv6 address.
- Network edge: A router forwards the public ports to the machine running your proxy, and a firewall allows only intended traffic.
- Reverse proxy: One listener on ports 80 and 443 chooses a backend by hostname or path, so several services can use names such as
notes.example.comandphotos.example.com. - TLS: The proxy presents a certificate to browsers and encrypts the client connection with HTTPS.
- Operations: Databases, uploaded files, configuration, secrets, logs, updates, monitoring, and tested restores are part of the service.
Routing does not make an application secure by itself. Each application still needs authentication, patching, sensible rate limits, and protected administrative paths.
How do I point my domain to a self-hosted server?
Create DNS records for the hostname, direct the router and firewall to the proxy host, then verify the public answer before troubleshooting the proxy. Public certificate authorities need to see that the hostname resolves to your server and that the normal validation ports are reachable.

1. Create the address records
At your authoritative DNS provider, create an A record for the server’s public IPv4 address. Create an AAAA record only when the server is actually reachable over IPv6; an incorrect AAAA record can send some visitors to a dead address even while IPv4 works. Use separate hostnames for separate services, for example notes.example.com and photos.example.com.

2. Forward the public ports
If the server sits behind a home router, forward TCP port 80 and TCP port 443 to the machine running the reverse proxy. Permit those ports in the host firewall and any upstream firewall. Do not forward every application port simply because the application uses a different internal number; the proxy should be the public entry point.
3. Confirm DNS from outside your network
Check the authoritative answer before changing proxy settings. For example:
dig +short A notes.example.com
dig +short AAAA notes.example.com
The returned addresses should be the public addresses that can reach your proxy. A DNS-over-HTTPS lookup from another network is useful when local resolver caching hides a mistake. If an old address remains, wait for the record’s TTL to expire and recheck rather than repeatedly changing the proxy.
4. Decide whether to use managed DNS proxying
A managed DNS service can become both your DNS provider and an edge reverse proxy after the domain is onboarded. That is one architecture option, not a requirement: you can also keep DNS authoritative elsewhere and send the records directly to your own server. Understand which system terminates TLS and which address your router is expected to receive.
What is a reverse proxy, and why is it useful?
A reverse proxy accepts the public request, examines the hostname or route, and forwards the request to a private backend such as localhost:9000. It gives multiple applications one controlled front door, centralizes certificates and redirects, and lets backends remain on private ports.

One public pair of ports
The proxy owns ports 80 and 443. An incoming request for notes.example.com can go to one service while photos.example.com goes to another. The applications do not need separate public addresses or certificates.
TLS termination and backend encryption
The usual arrangement is HTTPS from the browser to the proxy and plain HTTP from the proxy to a service on the same private machine. If the backend is on another host, crosses an untrusted network, or has its own encryption requirement, configure HTTPS between proxy and backend as well. Client-side HTTPS does not automatically encrypt every hop.
WebSockets and application behavior
Modern reverse proxies can pass WebSocket connections used by dashboards and real-time applications, but the route must be configured correctly and timeouts may need attention. Test login, uploads, long-running requests, and WebSockets after every proxy change; a page loading successfully does not prove that every protocol path works.

Should I choose Caddy, Nginx, or another proxy?
Caddy is usually the easiest first choice when automatic certificates and a small configuration are more valuable than fine-grained control. Nginx is a strong alternative when you need extensive, explicit proxy controls or already operate an Nginx environment.
| Decision area | Caddy | Nginx | Managed edge proxy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Certificate issuance and renewal | Automatic ACME issuance and renewal when DNS, ports, hostname, and storage prerequisites are satisfied. | Usually assembled from Nginx configuration and a separate certificate client; exact automation is not stated in the cited material. | The provider may issue certificates at its edge; origin requirements depend on that provider. |
| Configuration style | Compact, readable site blocks. | More detailed directives and greater low-level control. | Configured in a provider dashboard or API; behavior is provider-specific. |
| HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect | Enabled as part of its automatic HTTPS behavior. | Configured explicitly. | Configured by the provider and/or origin. |
| Backend traffic | Can proxy to HTTP privately or use HTTPS to the backend. | Can proxy to HTTP privately or use HTTPS to the backend. | May require a separate origin-certificate and trust arrangement. |
| Routing and troubleshooting | Less configuration for common host-based routes; inspect Caddy logs when a route fails. | More knobs for headers, buffering, limits, and complex routing; more configuration to audit. | Edge logs and origin logs must both be checked. |
Leave Caddy’s maintained TLS defaults alone unless you have a documented compatibility or policy reason to change them. Copying old cipher-suite snippets from an unrelated tutorial can reduce security or break clients.
How do I enable HTTPS and keep TLS certificates renewed?
Use a publicly trusted ACME certificate for a public service. Caddy can request certificates from authorities such as Let’s Encrypt or ZeroSSL, redirect HTTP to HTTPS, and renew managed certificates, but only after its prerequisites are true.

- The hostname is present in the proxy configuration.
- Public DNS A and/or AAAA records resolve to the server.
- Ports 80 and 443 are reachable from the internet and forwarded to the proxy.
- The proxy’s certificate and state directory is persistent and writable.
Example Caddy route
notes.example.com {
reverse_proxy localhost:9000
}
This tells the proxy to serve the public hostname and send requests to the local service. Keep the proxy’s data directory on persistent storage, especially when it runs in a container; otherwise a restart can remove the state needed for renewal.
When is a self-signed certificate appropriate?
A self-signed certificate is useful for local development or an internal test environment where you control the clients and can install a trusted internal CA. Public browsers and other clients warn because they do not trust that issuer. For production internet traffic, use a publicly trusted certificate.
Common certificate failures
- DNS is wrong: the authority validates a different machine. Recheck A and AAAA answers.
- Port 80 or 443 is blocked: validation cannot reach the proxy. Check router forwarding, host firewall, and upstream filtering.
- IPv6 is partially configured: an AAAA record attracts clients to an unreachable address. Remove it until IPv6 routing and firewall rules are complete.
- State is not persistent: a container recreation loses certificate data. Mount the proxy’s data and configuration storage persistently.
How do I back up Docker volumes and databases?
Back up the database separately, copy application volumes off the server, encrypt the copies, retain multiple generations, and rehearse a restore. A job that exits successfully proves only that a command ran; it does not prove that the data can be recovered.
What to include
- Consistent database dumps, made with the database’s own dump tool.
- Uploaded files and other Docker volumes.
- Compose files, proxy configuration, environment settings, and service metadata.
- Secrets or a documented method to recreate them, stored with stronger access controls than the live application.
A practical routine
- Run a nightly database dump during a controlled window and record its timestamp and size.
- Copy the dump and required volumes to storage on a different system or site. A tool such as restic can provide encrypted, deduplicated repositories.
- Apply a 3-2-1 pattern: keep multiple copies, use at least two kinds of storage, and keep at least one copy off the server or off-site.
- Remove expired generations according to the amount of data loss your service can tolerate. There is no universal retention period; a legal, business, or personal recovery requirement should determine yours.
- On a schedule, build or use a separate machine, restore the database, volumes, configuration, and secrets, then verify that users can log in and retrieve files.
Record what is included, where copies are stored, who can access them, the retention rule, and the date of the last completed restore. Protect the backup repository from the same credentials that control the live server; otherwise a compromise can erase both.
How do I keep self-hosted apps updated safely?
Updates are a recurring operating process combining change control, logs, health checks, monitoring, and recovery. There is no single safe weekly or monthly cadence for every operating system, container, or application.
- Prepare: read the release notes, confirm a recent usable backup, and identify the previous image or package version for rollback.
- Choose a window: schedule the change when a short interruption is acceptable and someone can inspect the result.
- Update in a controlled order: update the host and dependencies as required, then the application or container. Avoid changing many unrelated services at once.
- Check health: inspect service status, logs, disk space, authentication, background jobs, uploads, and proxy access from an external network.
- Recover if needed: revert to the previous version when supported, or restore the affected database and volumes. Keep the exact commands and versions in the maintenance record.
Monitor CPU, memory, storage, and downtime; alert on failed services and a full disk. Review logs after updates rather than waiting for users to report a silent failure.

How do I keep Portainer and other admin interfaces private?
Do not expose Portainer, database administration tools, or similar dashboards directly to the public internet. Reach them through an SSH tunnel, a VPN or tailnet, or a gated proxy that requires authentication and network restrictions.
Reduce the attack surface
- Bind internal services to localhost or a private interface when practical.
- Expose only the proxy’s intended public ports.
- Use separate administrator accounts and strong authentication.
- Review router and host-firewall rules after every topology change.
- Scan the public address and confirm that only intended services answer.
A private bind is not a substitute for patching or authentication. Treat an administrative URL as sensitive even when it is hidden behind an obscure hostname.
What should I monitor after the initial setup?
Operational visibility closes the gap between a service that appears installed and one that remains dependable. At minimum, watch disk capacity, resource pressure, service failures, certificate-renewal errors, backup-job results, and external availability.
- Keep proxy and application logs long enough to investigate an incident, while limiting access to them.
- Alert before storage is exhausted; a full disk can stop databases, certificates, and logging simultaneously.
- Check that the latest backup exists and is readable, not merely that a scheduler ran.
- After network or DNS changes, test from outside the home network to avoid false confidence from local routing.
Self-hosting is successful when a failure produces a known procedure: identify the failing layer, preserve logs, roll back or restore, and document the fix.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need both an A and an AAAA record?
No. Use an A record for reachable IPv4, and add AAAA only when IPv6 connectivity, forwarding, and firewall rules are complete. An incorrect AAAA record can cause intermittent failures for clients that prefer IPv6.
Can I use a private hostname for production HTTPS?
Public certificate authorities validate publicly resolvable names, so a private-only hostname normally requires an internal certificate authority and client trust configuration. That can work for a controlled network, but it is a different trust model from a publicly trusted certificate.

Should the reverse proxy and backend always use HTTPS?
Not necessarily. HTTP on the same protected host is common because the encrypted client-to-proxy hop already protects internet traffic. Use HTTPS to the backend when traffic crosses an untrusted or separately administered network, or when the application requires end-to-end encryption.
What is the quickest way to diagnose a site that works locally but not publicly?
Check the layers in order: public A/AAAA answers, router forwarding, firewall rules, proxy listening ports, certificate logs, and finally the backend health check. Testing from a different network prevents local DNS or hairpin-routing behavior from hiding the real fault.
How do I know a backup is trustworthy?
Restore it on a separate machine and verify the database, uploaded files, configuration, secrets, and user-facing functions. Record the restore date and any missing item, then correct the backup scope before relying on it for an incident.
