Generate the PDF inside a server endpoint that first verifies the customer’s session and confirms that the requested invoice belongs to that customer. Build the document from invoice data loaded by that authorized server query, then return the bytes with Content-Type: application/pdf and a sanitized attachment filename. A Node application can draw the file directly with PDFKit, or send trusted HTML to an authenticated HTML-to-PDF renderer. Neither approach should expose a session cookie to a separate browser process.
The important boundary is authorization, not the PDF library. A valid login must not grant access to arbitrary invoice IDs, and PDF password or permission settings cannot replace the route’s access check.

Use a dedicated endpoint such as GET /invoices/:id/pdf. The endpoint authenticates the caller, authorizes the specific invoice, renders from server-side data, and streams or returns the resulting PDF.
- Read the session or other authentication credential from the incoming request.
- Query the invoice with the customer identity included in the authorization condition.
- Return an appropriate error before rendering if authentication or ownership checks fail.
- Render the authorized invoice with a server-side PDF library or an authenticated rendering service.
- Set the PDF response headers and return the bytes.
Authorization should be part of the data query rather than a separate “load by ID, then check later” convention. That reduces the chance that a future code path accidentally renders an invoice belonging to another account.

Framework-neutral route skeleton
GET /invoices/:id/pdf
user = require_authenticated_session(request)
invoice = load_invoice_for_user(id, user.id) // authorization is part of the query
if invoice is missing: return 404
pdf_bytes = render_invoice(invoice) // PDFKit or server-side HTML renderer
response.status = 200
response.headers[Content-Type] = application/pdf
response.headers[Content-Disposition] = attachment; filename="invoice-<safe-id>.pdf"
return pdf_bytes
The route can stream as the renderer produces output or buffer the completed bytes, depending on the library and your memory limits. Keep the endpoint itself responsible for access control even when another component performs the rendering.
How do I authenticate and authorize the invoice ID?
Authentication answers “who is calling?” Authorization answers “may this caller retrieve this particular invoice?” Perform both before reading invoice details that could be disclosed through a PDF or an error message.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAuthentication failure
Return HTTP 401 Unauthorized when there is no valid logged-in session (or equivalent credential). Do not start rendering, call a PDF service, or reveal invoice metadata in this branch.
Ownership and permission checks
Use the authenticated user ID, tenant ID, or account scope in the invoice lookup. A logged-in user who is not allowed to access the requested record should receive 403 Forbidden when the record is known but access is denied. Many applications intentionally return 404 Not Found for both a missing invoice and an invoice outside the caller’s scope, preventing ID probing; choose one policy and apply it consistently.
Authorization for staff and shared accounts
If support staff, finance roles, or multiple users can access the same account, express those rules in the authorization query or policy layer. Test direct-ID requests for another tenant, not just the normal link shown in the customer dashboard.
Why must invoice values come from the server?
The browser is an untrusted input channel. Do not accept price, tax, customer name, line-item totals, currency, payment status, or grand total as authoritative fields in a download request.
Recommended Free Tools
Load the canonical invoice and its line items after authorization, calculate or verify totals using the same business rules used for billing, and render that trusted object. If an invoice is immutable after issuance, render the stored values; if corrections are allowed, define which version is downloadable and record the change.

Should I use PDFKit or an HTML-to-PDF service?
Choose based on where you want layout logic and operational complexity to live. PDFKit draws directly in your application; an HTML-to-PDF service renders a document or URL using an external API or browser runtime.
| Decision area | PDFKit in the application | HTML-to-PDF service or browser renderer |
|---|---|---|
| Data boundary | Authorized invoice object is passed directly to drawing code. | HTML or a URL is sent over an authenticated server-to-server request. |
| Layout model | Explicit drawing primitives, coordinates, text, and tables. | HTML and CSS, usually better for designs already built as web templates. |
| Operational footprint | Application dependency and stream handling; no separate browser process is required. | Hosted API or a browser runtime, with network, timeout, and credential management. |
| Visual fidelity | Predictable when you control every drawing operation. | CSS-based layouts can match an existing invoice page, subject to renderer support. |
| Security surface | Protect application data and generated output. | Also restrict URL fetches, protect the provider key, and control what the renderer can access. |
| Compliance controls | PDFKit documents password, permission, accessibility, and PDF/A options. | Available controls depend on the service or browser pipeline and must be verified separately. |
PDFKit describes itself as “A JavaScript PDF generation library for Node and the browser.” Its PDFDocument instances are readable Node streams, so they can be piped to an HTTP response before calling end(). An HTML renderer is preferable when the invoice already exists as a carefully designed HTML/CSS template and the team accepts the additional runtime or service boundary.
How do I generate the PDF directly with PDFKit?
For an in-process Node implementation, create a PDFDocument, write only authorized invoice data, pipe it to the response, and call end() after all content has been added.
- Authenticate the request and load the invoice with an ownership condition.
- Create the document with the page size, margins, and any required metadata.
- Add the seller, customer, invoice number, issue date, payment terms, line items, tax, and total from the trusted invoice object.
- Handle long descriptions and page breaks deliberately; do not assume every invoice fits on one page.
- Set the response headers before piping the document.
- Write the final content and call
end()so the stream completes.
async function downloadInvoicePdf(request, response) {
const user = await requireAuthenticatedSession(request);
const invoice = await loadInvoiceForUser(request.params.id, user.id);
if (!invoice) {
response.status(404).send('Invoice not found');
return;
}
const safeId = String(invoice.id).replace(/[^A-Za-z0-9_-]/g, '_');
response.status(200);
response.setHeader('Content-Type', 'application/pdf');
response.setHeader('Content-Disposition', `attachment; filename="invoice-${safeId}.pdf"`);
const doc = new PDFDocument();
doc.pipe(response);
doc.fontSize(18).text('Invoice');
doc.fontSize(10).text(`Invoice number: ${invoice.number}`);
doc.text(`Issued: ${invoice.issueDate}`);
for (const item of invoice.items) {
doc.text(`${item.description} ${item.quantity} × ${item.unitPrice}`);
}
doc.text(`Total: ${invoice.total}`);
doc.end();
}
The example is intentionally framework-neutral: adapt response methods and error handling to your server framework. Keep formatting and pagination in a dedicated renderer function so the route remains focused on authentication, authorization, and transport.
When PDFKit’s document controls help
PDFKit documents user and owner passwords, permission flags for printing, copying, modifying, annotating, forms, accessibility, and document assembly, as well as PDF/A options. These settings can support a compliance or archival requirement, but viewer applications ultimately enforce decrypted-file permissions. They do not prevent an authorized user from downloading the file and do not substitute for route authorization.
How do I use an HTML-to-PDF service without leaking data?
Call the renderer from your server, not from the customer’s browser. Send either sanitized invoice HTML or a tightly controlled URL over an authenticated server-to-server request, and keep the provider credential in server-side configuration.
- Render an invoice template from the authorized, server-side invoice object.
- Remove scripts, external resources, and user-controlled URLs unless they are explicitly required and allow-listed.
- Authenticate the request to the rendering service with a secret stored outside source code and client bundles.
- Set a timeout and handle non-success responses as renderer failures.
- Verify that the returned payload is PDF data before sending it to the customer.
- Forward only the necessary bytes; do not expose the service response, key, or internal URL to the browser.
If the service loads a URL, treat that URL as a privileged network request. Restrict outbound destinations to your own print endpoint or a fixed asset host, and prevent access to internal administration or metadata endpoints.

How can a browser renderer load a protected invoice page safely?
Do not give a separate browser process the customer’s ordinary session cookie. Keep the normal session-protected page for users, and create a separate print route that accepts a random, short-lived, single-use render token.
Token lifecycle
- After the server has authorized the invoice, mint a cryptographically random token with a short expiration.
- Bind the token to exactly one invoice ID and, where appropriate, the initiating account or job.
- Pass the token in a dedicated request header from the server-controlled renderer.
- Consume or invalidate it on the first successful use.
- Reject expired, mismatched, malformed, or reused tokens.
- Ensure the renderer does not receive ordinary user cookies.
If the token is invalid, the print route can fall back to the normal session check only when that behavior is explicitly intended. A token should grant access to one narrowly defined render operation, not become a reusable bearer credential.
What the print route should expose
Return a minimal invoice view with no account navigation, administrative controls, or unrelated customer data. Disable indexing and avoid logging the token in query strings; a dedicated header keeps it out of many URL and referral logs.
Which response headers and filename should the download use?
Send Content-Type: application/pdf and an attachment disposition with a safe filename such as invoice-12345.pdf. Sanitize the identifier before inserting it into the header so quotes, slashes, control characters, and line breaks cannot alter response headers or create an unsafe path.

If your product intentionally previews the document in a browser, use an inline disposition instead; do not change the authorization or rendering flow. Add cache directives appropriate for financial data, commonly preventing shared caches from storing customer-specific documents.
What errors should the endpoint return?
Make authentication, authorization, not-found, and renderer failures distinguishable to the client while avoiding disclosure of another customer’s records.
| Condition | Suggested response | Client action |
|---|---|---|
| No valid login | 401 Unauthorized | Refresh authentication or send the user to sign in. |
| Logged in but not permitted | 403 Forbidden, or a deliberate 404 policy | Do not retry with guessed IDs; show an access message. |
| Invoice does not exist | 404 Not Found | Refresh the invoice list or report that the document is unavailable. |
| Renderer dependency, timeout, or malformed output | 500-series renderer error | Retry safely, preferably with backoff, and alert operators. |
Never return a successful PDF response with an HTML error page hidden inside it. Set the status and content type only after the renderer has produced a valid result, or make your streaming path capable of terminating cleanly when generation fails.

How should I test a protected invoice download?
Test authorization and document correctness separately. A PDF that looks right but can be fetched by the wrong account is a security failure.
- Unauthenticated request to a valid invoice returns 401 and performs no render.
- Customer A requesting customer B’s invoice cannot obtain bytes or invoice metadata.
- A missing or malformed ID returns the documented 404 or validation response.
- Changing price, tax, or total fields in the browser request has no effect on the output.
- The filename contains only the sanitized identifier and ends in
.pdf. - The response has the expected PDF content type and a valid PDF signature.
- Long invoices paginate without overlapping totals or dropping line items.
- Unicode customer names, currencies, dates, and long descriptions render correctly with the chosen fonts.
- Renderer timeouts and provider failures produce a controlled error and useful server-side diagnostics without secrets.
- Single-use print tokens fail on the second request, after expiration, and when paired with a different invoice ID.
How do I choose an architecture for production?
Use direct PDFKit generation when invoices are mostly tabular, you want a small dependency footprint, and your team is comfortable defining layout with drawing operations. Use an HTML renderer when matching an existing web design saves substantial development effort and you can operate the browser or service securely.
Prefer in-process generation when
- The application already owns all invoice data and should not send it to a third party.
- Predictable resource usage and low network dependence matter.
- You need the PDF/A, encryption, accessibility, or permission controls exposed by your chosen library.
Prefer HTML rendering when
- The invoice design is maintained as HTML/CSS and changes frequently.
- Precise CSS layout, web fonts, and responsive template reuse outweigh a separate rendering runtime.
- Your team can enforce URL allow-lists, isolate the renderer, protect credentials, and monitor timeouts.
Whichever route you choose, keep the authorization boundary in your application. Rendering is a replaceable implementation detail; the customer-to-invoice access decision is not.
What are the most common implementation mistakes?
Checking ownership after loading by ID
A later check can be skipped during refactoring or in an alternate code path. Put the caller scope directly into the query or policy evaluation.
Passing the session cookie to a headless browser
That grants the renderer the user’s broader account privileges and increases the impact of a browser or navigation flaw. Use a narrow, expiring, single-use token instead.
Trusting totals supplied by JavaScript
Any user can alter those values before submitting the request. Re-read the issued invoice from server storage and render that record.
Embedding an unsanitized ID in a filename
Control characters and path separators can create header injection or confusing downloads. Allow only a conservative identifier character set.

Treating PDF permissions as access control
Password and permission flags affect some viewer behavior after download; they cannot stop an authorized route from issuing the file to the wrong person.
Allowing unrestricted URL fetches in an HTML renderer
A renderer that can browse arbitrary URLs may reach internal services or leak invoice content. Use fixed origins, network isolation, and explicit resource allow-lists.

Can the browser request the PDF with fetch instead of a normal link?
Yes. A client can call the same authenticated endpoint with fetch, read the response as a Blob, and create a local download link. The server-side authorization and response headers remain necessary; JavaScript does not make an otherwise public route private.
Should generated invoice PDFs be cached?
Customer invoices contain financial and personal information, so shared proxy or CDN caching is usually inappropriate. Use private or no-store cache directives unless you have a deliberate, encrypted document-storage design with its own access checks.
How should retries work with a single-use render token?
A failed network connection can leave the caller unsure whether the token was consumed. Provide a server-side job or mint a fresh token for a controlled retry rather than making the same token reusable indefinitely.
When is PDF/A worth enabling for invoices?
PDF/A is primarily an archival requirement, not a visual feature. Enable it when your retention policy, regulator, auditor, or records system requires a conforming archival file, and verify that fonts, metadata, and renderer features satisfy that profile.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What happens if an invoice is corrected after a customer downloaded it?
Treat issued documents as versioned records. Keep the original available according to your accounting policy, mark a replacement or credit clearly, and ensure the download route selects the intended version instead of silently changing the historical file.
