The Scythe Magoroku is worth considering when memory cooling and moderate noise matter more than maximum CPU thermal capacity. Its dual-tower design, six copper heatpipes, and two 120 mm Wonder Tornado fans kept DDR5 unusually cool in Tom’s Hardware testing, while peak noise remained moderate. The trade-off is substantial: on an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D test system, the Magoroku produced some of the weakest CPU temperatures in the comparison, especially with the processor allowed to exceed 260 W. It is therefore a more convincing choice for Intel systems or lower-power CPUs than for a flagship, unrestricted Ryzen 9 build. Tall-memory compatibility is possible, but the front fan may need to be moved behind the towers.
Is the Scythe Magoroku worth buying?
The Magoroku is a specialist air cooler rather than an all-purpose performance leader. At its $42.99 MSRP, it offers a substantial black dual-tower heatsink, six copper heatpipes, two included 120 mm fans, broad modern socket support, and unusually effective airflow over the DIMM area. Those strengths make it attractive for a quiet system with tall DDR5 modules, particularly when the processor has a moderate sustained power demand.

Its weakness is CPU heat removal under heavy loads. Tom’s Hardware found the Magoroku among the weakest coolers on a Ryzen 9 9950X3D platform at maximum load and the second-warmest at a 200 W CPU limit. That result does not make it unusable, but it does rule out an easy recommendation for a high-end AMD system running unrestricted multi-core workloads. Buyers in that category should compare a stronger cooler before choosing the Magoroku.
Best reasons to choose it
- Very good cooling around DDR5 memory, where large front fans and tower coolers can otherwise leave DIMMs warm.
- Moderate acoustic output in the cited testing, with a maximum measured level of 43.4 dBA.
- Support for current AMD AM5 and Intel LGA1700 and LGA1851 platforms, plus older AM4, LGA1200, and LGA115x sockets.
- A 155 mm installed height that fits many mid-tower cases.
Reasons to pass
- Weak thermal results with a Ryzen 9 9950X3D when power limits were high.
- The advertised 57 mm memory clearance can require fan repositioning, and leaving the front fan in its default position can reduce cooling performance with tall DIMMs.
- Only a one-year stated warranty is included.
What are the Magoroku’s design and specifications?
The Magoroku uses two fin stacks arranged as a dual tower. Six copper heatpipes pass through the base and both towers, transferring processor heat into a larger fin area than a single-tower cooler can provide. Scythe pairs the heatsink with two Wonder Tornado 120 mm fans, one positioned between or in front of the towers and the other at the exhaust side, depending on the memory-clearance arrangement.

The 155 mm height is the key case-fit measurement, while the 142.5 mm width matters for motherboard heatsinks and memory overhang. Check both dimensions against the case and board layout rather than relying on a generic “ATX compatible” label. The fans use standard PWM control, so a motherboard can regulate their speed through a normal four-pin CPU-fan header.
How well does the Magoroku cool a powerful CPU?
It depends heavily on the processor’s sustained power. In Tom’s Hardware’s controlled test, the cooler struggled most when the Ryzen 9 9950X3D was allowed to draw very high power. With Precision Boost Overdrive enabled, that CPU could exceed 260 W and reach its 95 C thermal limit; the Magoroku delivered the weakest results on that test bench. When the processor was capped at 200 W, the Magoroku was still the second-warmest cooler tested.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThose figures come from one demanding platform, not a universal ranking for every processor. The test used a closed Tryx FLOVA F50 case, an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D, an MSI X870E Carbon WiFi motherboard, an MSI RTX 4070 Ti Super, and TeamGroup T-Force Xtreem DDR5-7200 memory. Case airflow, motherboard power settings, ambient temperature, and the CPU’s own boost behavior can all change the result.
| Test condition | Measured result | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum-load Ryzen 9 9950X3D test with PBO enabled | Among the weakest CPU thermal results in the comparison; the CPU could exceed 260 W and reach 95 C TJ Max | Shows the Magoroku is a poor match for an unrestricted flagship-AMD workload |
| 200 W CPU limit | Second-warmest cooler tested | Performance remains marginal for a sustained 200 W processor |
| 150 W CPU plus GPU workload | 69.9 C CPU temperature, 47.9 C over ambient, at 39.6 dBA | A more moderate mixed load produced a usable result with moderate noise |
| Noise-normalized operation at 38.9 dBA | 228.7 W average power | Indicates how much heat the cooler could dissipate at a fixed acoustic level in that test |
The 150 W result is the most relevant guide for a mainstream gaming or productivity build that does not sustain flagship-level package power. It should not be interpreted as evidence that the Magoroku will keep every 150 W processor at the same temperature; it is a result from the specific case, components, ambient conditions, and workload used by the reviewer.

Why is the Magoroku unusually good for RAM cooling?
The Magoroku’s strongest measured characteristic is airflow over the memory slots. In Tom’s Hardware’s Karhu-based testing, DDR5 averaged 43 C, or 21 C above ambient. That tied for second place in the comparison after excluding an all-in-one cooler fitted with additional fans aimed at the VRM area.
This matters when using high-voltage DDR5 kits, densely populated DIMM slots, or memory with large decorative heat spreaders. A tower cooler’s front fan can push air directly across the DIMMs instead of sending all of its flow through the fin stack. Lower memory temperature does not automatically increase performance, but it can provide more thermal margin for sustained memory testing and reduce heat accumulation around the socket.
The memory result should be considered alongside the CPU result. The Magoroku moves air effectively around the socket, yet its heatpipe and fin-stack capacity did not handle the Ryzen 9 9950X3D’s highest power levels as well as competing coolers. It is possible to have excellent DIMM airflow and only average processor cooling; this model demonstrates that distinction clearly.
Does the Magoroku fit tall RAM?
Scythe lists support for memory modules up to 57 mm tall, but that number assumes the cooler is configured appropriately. With the front fan left in its default position, a tall DIMM can force the fan upward or partially block its intended airflow path. Tom’s Hardware observed that this arrangement can reduce performance.

The practical solution is to move the front fan to the rear of the cooler, above the motherboard’s VRM heatsinks. That placement clears the DIMM slots completely and avoids the performance penalty associated with tall memory beneath the front fan. Before installation, measure the actual module height, account for the motherboard’s top-edge heatsink, and confirm that the rear fan position does not interfere with the case exhaust opening.
Memory-clearance checklist
- Confirm the DIMM height, including any raised RGB diffuser or decorative cover.
- Check whether the case has enough width for a 155 mm cooler plus the side-panel clearance required by the relocated fan.
- Plan the fan direction so air still travels from the front of the case toward the rear exhaust.
- After mounting, verify that the fan clips are fully seated and that the fan does not touch the VRM heatsink.
How loud is the Scythe Magoroku?
Tom’s Hardware measured a maximum noise level of 43.4 dBA. In the 150 W CPU-plus-GPU workload, the cooler reached 39.6 dBA, and its noise-normalized comparison point was 38.9 dBA. These are test-bench measurements rather than a guarantee for every case, because fan curves, panel damping, ambient noise, and the distance from the microphone all affect what a user hears.
The 300–2,000 RPM control range gives the motherboard room to favor silence at idle and ramp up under sustained load. A sensible curve can keep the fans below their upper range during browsing and gaming, but a processor that repeatedly reaches high package power will still require more airflow. Quiet operation therefore comes from matching the cooler to an appropriate CPU power target, not from assuming the fans will remain slow in every workload.
How do I install the Magoroku on an AM5 motherboard?
Installation follows the standard AM5 air-cooler sequence. The package includes AMD and Intel mounting hardware, three sets of fan clips, a small tube of thermal compound, two Wonder Tornado 120 fans, and a screwdriver.

- Shut down the system, disconnect power, and remove the motherboard’s stock AM5 retention mechanism while leaving the factory backplate in place if the supplied instructions specify it.
- Fit the supplied mounting studs to the backplate and install the two mounting bars in the AM5 orientation. Tighten them evenly so the bars sit flat.
- Clean the processor surface if necessary and apply the supplied thermal compound in a small, consistent amount at the center of the heat spreader.
- Remove the center fan if it obstructs access to the mounting screws. Lower the heatsink onto the CPU, align the spring-loaded screws with the mounting bars, and tighten each side alternately until secure.
- Choose the fan arrangement. For ordinary-height memory, use the normal front-and-center arrangement. For tall DIMMs, move the front fan to the rear position above the VRM heatsinks before attaching the clips.
- Use the included clips to attach both fans. Check that the blades spin freely and that no cable can contact them.
- Connect the PWM lead to the motherboard’s CPU_FAN header, then set a suitable temperature-based fan curve in firmware or the operating system.
Intel installation uses the corresponding LGA mounting hardware supplied in the box. Because socket hole spacing and backplate steps differ between LGA1851, LGA1700, LGA1200, and LGA115x, follow the socket-specific diagram rather than reusing the AM5 sequence.
Which sockets and cases are compatible?
The cooler supports AMD’s AM5 and AM4 sockets and Intel’s LGA1851, LGA1700, LGA1200, and LGA115x families. Socket support does not guarantee clearance on a particular motherboard: tall VRM heatsinks, memory spreaders, and a case’s side panel can all create conflicts.

How does it compare with the recommended alternative?
Tom’s Hardware specifically suggests that AMD buyers consider Thermalright’s Royal Pretor 130 at the same price point. The recommendation is driven by the Magoroku’s weak Ryzen 9 thermal results, not by a claim that the alternative has better memory cooling in every configuration. The available testing does not establish a complete head-to-head specification table for the two models.
| Buying criterion | Scythe Magoroku | Thermalright Royal Pretor 130 |
|---|---|---|
| Sustained flagship-AMD CPU cooling | Weak in the cited Ryzen 9 9950X3D testing | Recommended by Tom’s Hardware for AMD at the same price point; comparative figures not stated |
| RAM cooling | 43 C DDR5 average, 21 C over ambient, in the cited test | Comparative RAM result not stated |
| Noise | 43.4 dBA maximum measured; 39.6 dBA in the 150 W mixed workload | Comparable measurement not stated |
| Memory clearance | Up to 57 mm listed; tall-DIMM setup may require moving the fan | Comparative clearance not stated |
| Physical height | 155 mm with fans | Not stated |
| Socket support | AM5, AM4, LGA1851, LGA1700, LGA1200, LGA115x | Not stated |
| Warranty | One year | Not stated |
| Price basis | $42.99 MSRP | Described as the same price point by Tom’s Hardware; exact price and region not stated |
If your priority is the strongest documented CPU result for a high-power AMD chip, the Royal Pretor 130 is the more logical starting point because it is the alternative the reviewer names. If your priority is keeping tall DDR5 modules cool while maintaining a moderate noise level, the Magoroku has a documented advantage in the area it was designed to address.

What are the Magoroku’s main drawbacks?
- Limited high-power headroom: The cooler was among the weakest options on a 9950X3D system at maximum load and remained near the warm end at 200 W.
- Configuration-sensitive RAM clearance: The 57 mm figure is not a promise that the default fan position will work optimally with every tall module.
- Case-fit risk: A 155 mm tower can be too tall for compact cases, and the fan relocation needed for tall memory may increase the practical clearance requirement.
- Short stated warranty: Scythe lists one year, which is less long-term coverage than some buyers expect from a component intended to remain in service across multiple builds.
- Results depend on power settings: A motherboard’s automatic boost behavior can push a processor far beyond the thermal load implied by its nominal TDP.
Which type of builder should buy it?
Choose the Magoroku if
- You are building around an Intel processor or an AMD chip with a controlled, moderate power limit.
- Your DDR5 modules are tall and memory temperature is a specific concern.
- You want a dual-tower cooler with included fans rather than adding fans separately.
- Your case supports a 155 mm cooler and your motherboard has room around the socket.
- You value moderate measured noise more than class-leading temperatures at 200 W and above.
Choose a stronger alternative if
- You plan to run a Ryzen 9 9950X3D or another high-power processor at unrestricted boost limits.
- Your workloads include long renders, code builds, scientific calculations, or other sustained all-core loads.
- You cannot tolerate operating near the CPU’s thermal limit during heavy work.
- Your case has less than 155 mm of cooler clearance or leaves no room to reposition a fan.
What is the final buying advice?
The Scythe Magoroku succeeds at a clearly defined job: it provides strong airflow over DDR5 memory while keeping fan noise moderate in the tested workloads. Its six heatpipes, dual towers, broad socket list, and $42.99 MSRP make the package appealing for mainstream systems and Intel-oriented builds.
It is not the cooler to choose by default for an unrestricted flagship AMD processor. The Ryzen 9 9950X3D results show that its CPU thermal capacity trails what a high-power chip demands, even though its memory-area cooling is excellent. Buy it when RAM clearance and acoustics are your priorities and your CPU power target is realistic; otherwise, follow the reviewer’s advice and investigate a stronger option at the same price point.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a 155 mm cooler fit any mid-tower case?
No. Case specifications measure CPU-cooler clearance differently, and the side panel can reduce usable space. Treat 155 mm as the minimum published requirement, then allow a small practical margin and account for any fan moved upward or rearward for tall memory.
Will changing the fan position change the airflow direction?
It should not if both fans are oriented to move air from the front of the case toward the rear exhaust. After relocating the fan, check the arrows on its frame and confirm that both fans push in the same overall direction.
Are the Ryzen 9 results representative of every AMD processor?
No. The cited platform used a Ryzen 9 9950X3D with aggressive boost behavior and workloads capable of more than 260 W. A lower-power AMD processor may impose less demand, but the available test does not provide a universal temperature ranking for all AM4 or AM5 chips.
Does the Magoroku include everything needed for a first installation?
The package is described as including AMD and Intel mounting hardware, three sets of fan clips, thermal compound, two 120 mm fans, and a screwdriver. You still need a compatible motherboard, a case with sufficient clearance, and a free PWM CPU-fan header.
