For a browser game that an LMS should launch, score and mark complete, SCORM is usually the simplest integration. Choose xAPI when the game runs outside the LMS or you need event-level telemetry in a learning record store (LRS). Choose cmi5 when the LMS must launch the activity but you still need xAPI’s richer statements and standardized session behavior. Build a custom API only when real-time application workflows or backend integrations justify owning authentication, schemas, reporting and interoperability yourself.

The right decision depends less on the game engine than on where the game runs, what evidence you must retain, how the learner is launched and identified, and what your LMS and LRS already support. This guide maps those requirements to an implementation path, including failure modes and a practical selection framework.

Which integration should an educational game use?

Use the following decision table before writing integration code. It separates the protocol that carries learning records from the system that launches and manages the activity.

Requirement Best fit Reason
Browser game imported into an LMS with completion, pass/fail, score and time SCORM The LMS launches a package and exposes a browser runtime API with a constrained, well-known data model.
Game, simulator or mobile app that may run outside the LMS xAPI Statements can be sent from activity wherever it runs to an LRS.
LMS launch plus xAPI statements, normalized session and completion reporting cmi5 cmi5 adds launch, authorization, session and course-structure rules to xAPI.
Real-time commands, proprietary workflows or backend events that do not map cleanly to a learning record Custom API You control the endpoints and behavior, but must also own identity, security, schema, retries and reporting.

These choices are not mutually exclusive. A game can use a custom service for live application behavior while emitting xAPI or cmi5 records for portable learning history. Keeping a standards-based record is especially important if the game may later be connected to another LMS or analytics platform.

What is SCORM and how does a game communicate with an LMS?

SCORM assumes that content is packaged, managed and launched by an LMS. The game normally arrives as an importable package; the LMS opens the game in a browser session and makes a SCORM JavaScript API available to the content. The game discovers that API, initializes a session, writes permitted data and terminates the session when the learner leaves.

ADL describes SCORM’s data model as strictly defined. In practice, that means the integration is predictable for conventional outcomes but not designed for an unlimited stream of game events. Typical fields cover completion or success status, score, session time and a limited set of interactions. The LMS, rather than the game, remains the system of record for the course attempt.

What the SCORM runtime usually records

  • Completion: whether the learner finished the assigned activity.
  • Success: whether the learner passed the configured threshold.
  • Score: a raw, minimum, maximum or normalized value, depending on the LMS and package.
  • Time: session duration and, where supported, accumulated time.
  • Interactions: selected answers or interaction results within the limits of the SCORM data model.

SCORM is therefore a strong fit when the question is “Did the learner finish, and what score did they receive?” It is a weaker fit when the question is “Which route did the learner take, which object did they manipulate, and how did their strategy change over ten sessions?”

How to package a browser game for SCORM

  1. Create the package manifest. Include the game’s launch file and the course structure required by the target SCORM edition. The LMS uses the manifest to identify the package and its launchable SCO.
  2. Make the game discover the LMS API. During startup, look for the SCORM API supplied by the LMS rather than assuming a fixed frame or window location. Test the discovery logic in the exact launch mode used by the target LMS.
  3. Initialize the session. Call the runtime’s initialization function before reading or writing learner data. Treat a failed initialization as a launch error, not as a completed attempt.
  4. Write only the outcomes you need. Set completion, success, score, time and supported interaction fields at the points where those values become authoritative. Do not wait until a browser crash or tab close to send every value.
  5. Commit during the session. Commit after meaningful milestones so a temporary network or browser failure does not erase the entire attempt. The LMS still controls how often it persists data.
  6. Terminate cleanly. On a normal exit, write the final state, commit it and terminate the session. Also handle pause, suspend and resume behavior if the game can be left unfinished.
  7. Test the package in the target LMS. Confirm that launch, score, completion, resume and relaunch all behave as expected. LMS products differ in their handling of windows, pop-ups, status values and session commits, so conformance claims should be checked against the platform version you will deploy.

What SCORM cannot conveniently express

SCORM does not provide a general-purpose event stream for every in-game action. You can sometimes encode selected interactions, but a large custom event vocabulary quickly becomes awkward and dependent on LMS-specific reporting. SCORM also assumes browser delivery and an LMS-managed session; it is not the natural choice for a native mobile game, a simulator running at a remote site or a multiplayer activity distributed across services.

When is xAPI a better choice for game analytics?

xAPI records statements about experiences through an LRS. The activity can be a browser game, a simulation, a mobile application, a virtual environment or a group learning experience outside the LMS. The LRS stores the statements; an LMS may consume selected results, but xAPI itself does not define an LMS course package or launch process.

An xAPI statement normally identifies an actor, a verb and an object. It can also include a result, context, timestamp and extensions. That structure lets you record events such as a learner entering a level, choosing a strategy, completing a challenge, requesting a hint or collaborating with another player.

Design a stable game event vocabulary

Start with the questions the analytics must answer, then define a small, durable vocabulary. For example, a game might use verbs for “started,” “completed,” “failed,” “selected,” “mastered” and “requested hint.” The object should identify the game, level or challenge consistently across releases. Add result fields for score, success, duration or measured performance, and use context for cohort, session, attempt and parent activity.

If an existing xAPI profile does not describe your game’s verbs and activity types, document an xAPI profile for your project. A profile should define the meaning, required fields and allowed values of each statement so that dashboards and future integrations interpret events the same way.

Example of a game-completion statement

The following illustrates the shape of a statement; replace the identifiers and values with those defined for your deployment.

{"actor":{"account":{"homePage":"https://learning.example","name":"learner-2048"}},"verb":{"id":"https://example.org/xapi/verbs/completed"},"object":{"id":"https://example.org/games/ecology/level-3"},"result":{"completion":true,"success":true,"score":{"raw":870}},"context":{"registration":"attempt-7f2a"},"timestamp":"2026-10-26T12:00:00Z"}

The important design decision is not the syntax but the contract: every client must use the same learner identity rules, verb meanings, object identifiers and completion logic. Keep personally identifying data to the minimum required by your privacy policy, and make retention and deletion behavior explicit with the LRS operator.

How an HTML5 game sends xAPI records

  1. Choose the record endpoint. Identify the LRS that will accept statements and establish how the game receives authorization. An LMS alone is not an LRS.
  2. Map learner identity. Decide how an LMS user, app account or external identity becomes the xAPI actor. Use a stable mapping so one learner does not appear as several actors.
  3. Define activity identifiers. Assign durable identifiers to the game, versions, levels and challenges. Avoid identifiers that change whenever a display name changes.
  4. Emit milestone statements. Send records for events that answer an instructional or operational question. Do not flood the LRS with animation frames or redundant telemetry that no report will use.
  5. Handle delivery failures. Queue statements when connectivity is intermittent, retry safely and preserve statement IDs or another deduplication strategy. A mobile or offline-capable game should be able to resume transmission without creating false duplicate completions.
  6. Validate the data contract. Inspect statements in the LRS and test dashboards, exports and downstream reports. A statement that is technically accepted but semantically inconsistent is still an analytics failure.

xAPI is the right protocol when the learning experience is distributed or when event-level evidence matters. It does not, by itself, tell an LMS how to launch the game, enroll a learner, group attempts into a course or decide which statement means “the assignment is complete.” Those responsibilities require an additional profile, application logic or cmi5.

Where does cmi5 fit between SCORM and xAPI?

cmi5 is the option for an LMS-launched activity that needs xAPI records. It adds the pieces xAPI intentionally leaves open: a course structure, Assignable Units (AUs), launch parameters, authorization, session behavior and normalized reporting conventions. The LMS launches the AU, the activity sends statements to an LRS and cmi5 defines how the attempt is grouped and reported.

ADL’s cmi5 guidance explains that xAPI does not define how online courses are structured or how content communicates with the system hosting it. cmi5 supplies those rules while retaining xAPI’s richer statement model. It can reference content hosted outside the LMS, so the game does not have to be physically packaged and served in the same way as a SCORM SCO.

What a cmi5 implementation contains

  • Course structure: the organization of the course and its assignable activities.
  • Assignable Units: the launchable game or learning activity.
  • Launch parameters: information the LMS passes so the AU can connect to the correct session and service.
  • Authorization and session identifiers: values that bind statements to the learner’s launched attempt.
  • Reporting conventions: cmi5-defined verbs and result handling for consistent completion and success reporting.

When cmi5 is preferable to a direct xAPI launch

Use cmi5 when enrollment, launch control and course-level completion belong to an LMS, but the game needs distributed hosting or detailed xAPI telemetry. A direct xAPI integration would require you to design those launch and course rules yourself. cmi5 reduces that custom work, provided the target LMS supports cmi5 and can connect to an LRS.

cmi5 still requires an LMS or equivalent launch system; it is not a standalone replacement for one. Verify support for the cmi5 edition, launch behavior, authorization flow and reporting implementation before committing to the package format.

When does a custom API make sense?

A custom API is justified when the game is part of a larger application rather than merely a learning package. Examples include real-time game commands, matchmaking, inventory or entitlement checks, proprietary scoring services, live instructor controls and identity workflows that must update immediately in a business backend.

“Custom API” is not a standard protocol. Your team must define the endpoints, request and response schemas, authentication, authorization, versioning, rate limits, retries, idempotency, audit logging and error behavior. You also need rules for mapping an application account to a learner, deciding when an attempt is complete and exporting results for people who do not use your application.

Minimum contract for a custom learning-game service

  • Event schema: names, required fields, units, timestamps and versioning rules.
  • Identity mapping: how LMS users, institutional accounts and game profiles correspond.
  • Completion rules: the exact event or calculation that marks an activity complete or successful.
  • Delivery guarantees: retry behavior, idempotency keys, ordering expectations and recovery after client interruption.
  • Privacy controls: data minimization, access scopes, retention, deletion and administrator audit access.
  • Reporting and export: APIs or files that let an LMS, LRS or analytics system consume the results.
  • Interoperability plan: an option to emit xAPI or cmi5 records when portability across LMSs matters.

A custom service can coexist with SCORM or cmi5. For example, the game can use its own backend for real-time state while the LMS-facing layer reports completion through cmi5. That separation keeps operational traffic out of the learning record without sacrificing a portable standards-based result.

How do the four approaches compare?

Dimension SCORM xAPI cmi5 Custom API
Launch LMS launches content through a browser runtime API. Not defined by xAPI alone. Launch parameters and session behavior are defined for an LMS-launched AU. Defined by your application and identity system.
Data model Strictly defined and constrained. Developer-defined statements, results, context and extensions. xAPI statements plus cmi5 verbs and result conventions. Whatever schema the project team specifies.
Hosting Follows LMS package delivery. Activity can run outside the LMS. Distributed content can be referenced while retaining LMS launch. Any architecture you operate.
Typical reporting Completion, pass/fail, score, time and limited interactions. Event-level records in an LRS; reporting design is your responsibility. Normalized completion and session reporting plus rich xAPI data. Custom dashboards and exports; portability requires extra work.
Primary dependency SCORM-capable LMS. LRS and a defined statement profile. cmi5-capable LMS or launch system plus LRS. Your backend, security and integration operations.
Engineering ownership Lower integration surface for conventional outcomes. Moderate: statement vocabulary, identity and analytics must be designed. Moderate: cmi5 rules must be implemented and platform support verified. Highest: protocol, contracts, security, reporting and interoperability are yours.

There is no authoritative, directly comparable figure for adoption, implementation cost, latency or game-analytics performance across these approaches. Treat those as project-specific engineering questions rather than assuming one standard is universally cheaper or faster.

How should deployment scenarios influence the decision?

The game is a single browser package inside one LMS

Choose SCORM when the LMS accepts imports and the required record is completion, pass/fail, score, time and a small set of interactions. This minimizes moving parts and aligns the game with the LMS’s existing gradebook and attempt model.

The game runs on phones, desktops and remote simulators

Choose xAPI when activity occurs outside the LMS or when the same learner’s record must combine events from several clients. Define the actor and activity identifiers before shipping multiple clients so their records remain joinable.

The institution requires LMS assignment and launch control

Choose cmi5 if the LMS must launch the activity, provide a session and report completion while the game remains distributed or produces detailed xAPI statements. Confirm both cmi5 and LRS support on the specific platform version.

The game is a live application with operational backend needs

Use a custom API for commands and application state. Add xAPI or cmi5 output when instructors, auditors or another LMS need a portable learning record. Do not make the custom service the only copy of educational outcomes unless portability is irrelevant and the long-term ownership is acceptable.

What commonly breaks, and how can you fix it?

The SCORM game says the API is missing

Check that the game was launched by the LMS rather than opened directly from a file or a standalone URL. Verify API discovery in the LMS’s frame or window arrangement, then test initialization before attempting to set values. A direct browser launch cannot provide the LMS runtime object that SCORM expects.

The LMS shows a score but not completion

Score and completion are separate data elements. Set the completion or success state explicitly according to the SCORM edition and the LMS’s expected values, commit it, and inspect the final terminated session. Also verify that your game does not overwrite a completed state with an incomplete status during resume.

xAPI statements arrive with the wrong learner

Audit the actor-mapping step rather than changing the verb or object. The LMS user, mobile account and external identity must resolve to one stable actor under your privacy and authorization rules. Test relaunch, device changes and account-linking flows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The LRS contains duplicate completions

Give each logical event a stable statement identifier or idempotency key and make retries safe. Distinguish a network retry from a new attempt by carrying a registration or attempt identifier in context. Reconcile offline queues before allowing a new completion to be reported.

cmi5 launches but the session is not reportable

Inspect the launch parameters, authorization information and session identifier passed to the AU. Confirm that statements use the cmi5-defined verbs and result conventions and that the LMS and LRS are connected to the same attempt. A technically valid xAPI statement can still fail cmi5 reporting if it is not associated with the required session.

What should you verify before selecting a standard?

  • Which exact LMS product and version will launch the game?
  • Does that platform import the SCORM edition you plan to package, support cmi5, or expose an LRS connection?
  • Will every learner use a browser, or must the game work in native, offline or distributed environments?
  • Is the required result only completion and score, or do instructors need event-level paths, attempts and decisions?
  • Who owns learner identity, authorization and privacy controls?
  • How will you define an attempt, resume it and prevent duplicate records?
  • What happens when the browser closes, the device goes offline or the LRS is temporarily unavailable?
  • Which reports, exports or dashboards must consume the data?
  • Can the target platform demonstrate conformance with a test package and a real learner account?

Run a proof of concept with the smallest playable level, not a static mockup. Launch it through the production-like LMS, complete it, abandon it, resume it, lose connectivity and inspect the resulting gradebook and learning records. That exercise exposes platform-specific behavior that a protocol checklist cannot.

Can one game support more than one integration?

Yes, but separate the game’s domain events from each delivery adapter. Define a canonical internal event such as “challenge completed,” then map it to SCORM fields, xAPI statements, cmi5 reporting and custom backend messages as needed. This prevents each integration from inventing a different completion rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the standards adapter thin and versioned. A SCORM adapter should translate the canonical result into the LMS runtime model; an xAPI or cmi5 adapter should apply the approved profile and context; the custom service should handle real-time operations. Log the source event and the outbound record so discrepancies can be diagnosed without guessing which layer changed the result.

What is the practical recommendation?

Start with SCORM for a conventional, LMS-hosted browser game whose success criteria are completion and score. Move to xAPI when the game’s location or telemetry exceeds SCORM’s browser and data-model assumptions. Use cmi5 when you need that xAPI richness but still require standardized LMS launch and session management. Choose a custom API for application-specific real-time behavior, and preserve xAPI or cmi5 output whenever another LMS or reporting system may need the record.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can xAPI replace an LMS for an educational game?

No. xAPI defines how experiences are represented as statements and stored in an LRS, but it does not define enrollment, course structure, assignment launch or a gradebook. You need an LMS, a separate launch service or application logic for those responsibilities.

Does cmi5 require both an LMS and an LRS?

A cmi5 deployment requires an LMS or equivalent launch system, and its statements are sent to an LRS. Check that the selected LMS can supply cmi5 launch and authorization data and connect to the LRS you plan to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a SCORM package record detailed player behavior?

Only within SCORM’s constrained runtime data model and the interaction fields supported by the target LMS. For a durable event vocabulary covering routes, decisions or cross-device activity, an xAPI-based design is more suitable.

Should a custom game backend also emit xAPI statements?

Often, yes, when the game may be connected to multiple LMSs or when portable learning history matters. Keep the custom API for real-time application operations and emit a standards-based record for completion and analytics rather than forcing one interface to serve both purposes.
