Yes—if you already run an Apple Home household with a compatible Thread hub and want the door to unlock as you approach. The $399 Schlage Sense Pro BE889 combines ultra-wideband (UWB) walk-up unlocking through Apple Home Key with a touchscreen keypad, NFC tap, app control, one-touch locking and shareable access codes. It is unusually polished for an Apple-first setup, but it is not a universal smart-lock recommendation: there is no physical keyway, Android hands-free unlocking was unavailable at launch, and the Apple feature depends on specific iPhone, Apple Watch, iOS, watchOS and hub requirements.
Schlage announced the lock on June 16, 2026, and listed retail availability from June 29 through Amazon, Lowe’s, Home Depot and Schlage.com. The deciding question is not whether the lock is clever. It is whether your household values invisible, proximity-based entry enough to accept Apple-only constraints and a premium price.

What is the Schlage Sense Pro, and who should buy it?
The Sense Pro is Schlage’s BE889 premium smart deadbolt, built around Apple Home hands-free unlock. When a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch approaches, UWB measures distance and direction so the lock can distinguish “walking up to the door” from “standing somewhere nearby.” You can also unlock by tapping a device with Home Key or NFC, entering a code, using the Schlage Home app or operating the touchscreen manually.
It is best suited to an Apple-centered household that already owns (or plans to buy) a Thread-enabled Apple Home hub and wants the lowest-friction daily entry. It is a poor fit if you require a conventional key, a fingerprint reader, broad Android hands-free support or the lowest upfront cost.

The lock has no keyhole. That is central to its design: you gain a clean exterior and several electronic entry methods, but you cannot fall back to a traditional metal key if electronics, software or account access fail.
How does walk-up unlocking work?
Sense Pro uses UWB together with Apple Home Key. UWB provides precise ranging, while Home Key supplies the credential and Apple Home supplies the automation. In normal use, you approach with an enrolled iPhone or Apple Watch; the lock verifies proximity and unlocks without requiring you to open an app or touch the keypad.
What the approach experience feels like
The Verge rated Sense Pro 8 and described UWB unlocking as fast and reliable in testing. Popular Mechanics also found approach unlocking fast and consistent, writing that the first automatic unlock felt as if the house was “waiting for me to arrive.” Tom’s Guide reported that the bolt released when the reviewer came within roughly a foot and did not unlock while the reviewer merely lingered farther away. Those are hands-on observations, not a guaranteed distance for every installation.
The Schlage Home app offers three hands-free modes: intuitive, touch and delay. Intuitive is the most automatic. Touch adds a physical interaction at the lock, while delay is intended for situations in which you want more time or a different trigger before the bolt opens. The exact behavior depends on your selected mode and phone position.
Why UWB is different from ordinary Bluetooth proximity
Bluetooth can estimate that a phone is nearby, but it is less precise about exactly where the phone is. UWB is designed for accurate ranging, which helps Sense Pro avoid opening merely because you are in the general vicinity. That precision is why walk-up unlocking can feel automatic without being as indiscriminate as a simple “in range” rule.
UWB does not eliminate every installation variable. Door alignment, metal around the frame, wireless coverage and the location of your Apple Home hub can affect first-time pairing and day-to-day reliability.

Do you need an Apple Home hub?
You need a Thread-enabled Apple Home hub for Apple hands-free Home Key. Schlage specifically lists Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini and a compatible Thread border router as examples. The hub provides the Thread and Home infrastructure that lets the lock participate reliably in your home when your phone is not acting as the sole controller.

What happens if you do not have one?
You can still use the lock’s other entry methods, including the keypad, Schlage Home app and supported local wireless connections, but you should not buy Sense Pro expecting its signature walk-up feature to work without the required hub. Budget for a compatible hub if hands-free unlocking is the reason you are considering this model.
Schlage’s launch guidance also says that connecting the lock to Apple Home over Thread and the Schlage app over Wi-Fi at the same time is not recommended. Tom’s Guide used that dual setup and saw the battery fall to 51% after a couple of weeks; that observation is configuration-specific and should not be treated as a universal battery-life result.
Which iPhones and Apple Watches support hands-free Home Key?
Compatibility is narrower than the phrase “works with Apple Home” suggests. Schlage’s requirements for hands-free Home Key are:

An iPhone or Watch can therefore be “new enough” in ordinary marketing terms and still be excluded. Check the exact model and operating-system version before installation, especially if your household uses an SE device or iPhone 16e.
What are the ways to unlock Sense Pro?
Sense Pro gives you multiple electronic paths, but they do not all solve the same problem. Hands-free entry is the convenience feature; the keypad and shared codes are the practical options for family, cleaners, guests and service providers.
UWB walk-up unlock
Approach the door with a supported, enrolled iPhone or Apple Watch. The lock uses UWB ranging and Apple Home Key to authenticate the device and release the bolt.
Apple Home Key or NFC tap
Tap a compatible device at the lock for contact-based entry. This is useful when you want Apple authentication but do not want the lock to open automatically as you approach.

Touchscreen keypad
Enter an assigned code on the exterior touchscreen. Schlage says Sense Pro can manage up to 250 unique codes, with timed auto-lock and daily schedules for controlling when codes or locking behavior apply. Popular Mechanics found the minimalist, normally blank screen less obvious to guests, so first-time visitors may need instructions to wake or use it.

Use the app for lock status, remote control where supported by your network setup, code management and hands-free-mode selection. App control is a useful fallback, but it is less convenient than a code when a guest does not have your account or phone.
One-touch locking
Touch the exterior control to lock the door when leaving. This is distinct from auto-lock: one-touch is an intentional action, while auto-lock waits for the schedule or timeout you configured.
Shared access codes
Create individual codes rather than giving everyone one permanent PIN. Separate codes make it easier to revoke a contractor’s access, set a recurring schedule for a dog walker or identify which household member used the lock.

What happens when the batteries run low or die?
Schlage specifies four AA batteries and says standard usage provides up to six months of battery life. Launch materials also describe a USB-C jumpstart port that supplies temporary exterior power when the internal batteries can no longer operate the lock.

The spread between six months and nine-plus months is not necessarily contradictory. Radio activity, lock cycles, signal quality, firmware behavior and network architecture all affect consumption. Treat the manufacturer’s six-month figure as the conservative planning number, and treat longer reviewer results as evidence that a particular Thread-only setup can do better.
Use the emergency-power port correctly
- Keep a suitable USB-C power source available before the batteries are exhausted.
- Connect it to the exterior emergency-power port to provide temporary power.
- Use the keypad, Home Key, app or another configured method to unlock.
- Replace the four AA batteries as soon as the door is open; the USB-C connection is a temporary recovery method, not a replacement battery pack.
Because there is no keyhole, battery maintenance matters more than it does on a conventional electronic deadbolt. Enable low-battery notifications where available, and do not wait for the final warning before arranging replacement batteries.

Is Sense Pro reliable in real installations?
Hands-on reviews were broadly positive about the unlock experience but exposed an important setup risk: Thread coverage and border-router placement. The Verge said Apple Home pairing failed repeatedly until the reviewer improved Thread coverage and moved the border router. That means a lock can be excellent at UWB ranging and still be frustrating to install if the network around the doorway is weak.

- Confirm that the door closes and latches smoothly; a smart motor cannot compensate for a misaligned strike.
- Identify where your Apple Home hub or Thread border router will sit relative to the door.
- Update the eligible iPhone or Apple Watch to the required software.
- Decide whether you will use Apple Home, the Schlage app or both, remembering Schlage’s warning about dual Thread-and-Wi-Fi setup.
- Tell guests that the exterior display is intentionally minimalist and may not look active until they interact with it.
If Apple Home pairing fails
- Move the Thread border router or Apple Home hub closer to the lock without placing it behind dense obstructions.
- Check that the hub is actually a Thread-capable model, not merely an older Apple TV or speaker.
- Verify iOS, watchOS and device-model eligibility.
- Finish one network path first, then add other integrations only if needed.
- Power-cycle the lock and hub, then repeat pairing after the Thread network has stabilized.

That uncertainty changes the buying decision. Choose Sense Pro when the documented Apple UWB workflow, no-keyway design and Schlage code management are exactly what you want. Choose the U400 only after confirming its current regional support for your preferred ecosystem, entry method, hub and emergency-access plan; a product that looks similar in a headline may behave very differently at the door.

Android hands-free unlocking was not available at launch. Matter over Thread can provide a route to broader smart-home control, but that does not mean an Android phone gets the same UWB walk-up experience as an eligible iPhone or Apple Watch.
If Android users live in the home, plan around keypad codes or whatever Android control the current Schlage software explicitly supports. Do not buy this lock on the assumption that a future Matter update automatically adds hands-free Android entry.
How secure is the keyless design?
Sense Pro is rated BHMA Grade 2 in the key specifications published by Popular Mechanics, and Matter certification data identifies Thread transport for one certified hardware and firmware entry. Those are useful indicators of product and interoperability standards, not a substitute for an independent long-term security study.
The no-keyway design removes the risk of a copied or picked cylinder, but it also removes mechanical override. Your resilience plan is electronic: maintain batteries, keep emergency power available, protect app accounts and retain at least one working code that is not shared broadly.

Can I use the same Sense Pro with Apple Home and the Schlage app?
