Choose the certification that matches the work you want to do and the technology used by your target employers. SAP certification is the most direct signal for SAP implementation, applications and business-process roles. AWS, Microsoft and Google Cloud certifications are better aligned with infrastructure, development, architecture, security, data and operations inside those respective cloud ecosystems. There is no official evidence that one provider is universally preferred, harder, or more lucrative than the others.
These programs are not one interchangeable ladder. Their levels, assessments, renewal rules and intended audiences differ, so compare the exact credential—not just the brand name—against a specific job goal.

Start with the role and systems named in the job descriptions you want, then select the provider whose credential validates those skills. A certification can show structured knowledge in an ecosystem; it does not prove that the credential is equivalent to another provider’s or guarantees a hiring outcome.
| If you want to work on | Start by investigating | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| SAP implementations, configuration, applications or business processes | SAP role-based certification for the relevant solution area | SAP organizes its catalog around roles, skills and solution areas used in SAP projects. |
| Cloud infrastructure, operations or platform engineering | AWS, Microsoft or Google Cloud credential in the platform used by your target employers | Each provider’s catalog maps credentials to its own services, tools and operating model. |
| Cloud application development | The developer path in the cloud ecosystem appearing in your projects or job postings | Role credentials test platform-specific development patterns rather than generic programming alone. |
| Architecture, security, data or machine learning | A provider’s associate, professional, expert or specialty credential that names the discipline | Advanced and specialty tracks are designed for narrower responsibilities than foundational exams. |
| A single practical task or proof of a lab skill | Microsoft Applied Skills or a provider microcredential, where available | These formats can demonstrate a bounded task without replacing a broad role certification. |
If a posting names a platform, treat that ecosystem as the first filter. If postings are mixed, choose the platform where you can obtain hands-on access and build demonstrable projects; a credential without practice is a weaker signal than a slightly different credential backed by real work.

What is different about the four credential systems?
The labels “foundational,” “associate,” “professional,” “expert” and “specialty” do not have a common meaning across providers. A level describes position within one provider’s catalog, not a universal difficulty or seniority ranking.
| Provider | How the catalog is organized | Main assessment patterns | Maintenance described by the provider |
|---|---|---|---|
| SAP | Role-based certifications tied to skills and solution areas | Proctored exams and practical formats; practical, open-book, performance-based assessments began a phased rollout in November 2025 | Annual stay-certified assessments are described; exact conditions depend on the credential |
| AWS | Business, foundational, associate, professional and specialty certifications | Credential-specific exams, with preparation and recertification resources | Recertification guidance is provided; check the individual certification for current rules |
| Microsoft | Fundamentals, Associate, Expert and Specialty certifications, plus separate Applied Skills | Certifications use exams; Applied Skills use short, on-demand lab assessments | Eligible certifications can be renewed annually at no cost through an online assessment |
| Google Cloud | Foundational, associate and professional certifications | Credential-specific exams supported by exam guides and learning paths | Check the individual credential’s current renewal policy |
Because the systems measure different scopes, compare the exam objectives, prerequisites, assessment format and expected work rather than assuming that, for example, an “associate” credential at one provider equals an “associate” credential elsewhere.
How do SAP certifications work?
SAP tells learners to select a certification according to their skills, interests and career goals. That makes the role and solution area more important than choosing the highest-sounding title.
Who should choose SAP?
SAP is the logical first investigation for consultants, analysts, application specialists and business-process professionals implementing or operating SAP software. Review the role description and solution scope carefully: a certification for one SAP application may not cover configuration or processes in another.
What changed in SAP assessments?
SAP says practical, open-book, performance-based assessments were introduced in November 2025. Practical exams can include system-based tasks and scenario-based roleplay. The FAQ says proctored multiple-choice and practical formats will run in parallel through 2026 while a phased rollout proceeds, so the format is not uniform across every certification.
Before booking, open the exact certification page and confirm its current format, languages, preparation requirements and system access. Do not assume that a practical assessment is available for every role or that an older exam description still applies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow are SAP credentials kept current?
SAP describes annual stay-certified assessments. The maintenance requirement, timing and access conditions can vary by credential, so include the recurring assessment in your planning rather than treating certification as permanently static. SAP Learning Hub is presented as a preparation and learning resource; verify what access your chosen course or subscription includes.
What does the AWS certification path cover?
AWS separates credentials into business, foundational, associate, professional and specialty categories. The category should reflect both your experience and the responsibility you want to demonstrate.
Which AWS level matches my experience?
- Foundational: AWS describes these options as requiring no prior experience, making them a possible orientation for newcomers or nontechnical professionals who need broad cloud literacy.
- Associate: AWS recommends prior cloud or IT experience. These credentials are aimed at people performing a defined technical role rather than learning cloud concepts for the first time.
- Professional: AWS calls for two or more years of AWS experience for professional-level work. Plan on substantial architecture, operations or development exposure before attempting one.
- Specialty: Specialty credentials focus on a narrower domain. They make sense when a target role explicitly needs that domain and you already understand the surrounding AWS environment.
AWS also describes microcredentials as a hands-on complement to certifications. Use one when you need evidence of a bounded practical skill, but check whether the employer is asking for a certification, a microcredential or demonstrable project work.
What should I verify before selecting an AWS exam?
Credential names, exam objectives, updates and retirement dates can change. Read the current exam page, preparation recommendations and recertification instructions for the specific certification. AWS provides exam-preparation and recertification resources, but the requirements are not interchangeable across the catalog.

How are Microsoft certifications different from Applied Skills?
Microsoft makes a clear distinction: Certifications are exam-based, while Applied Skills are lab-based assessments for a narrower, on-demand task. Choose between them based on whether you need broad role validation or proof that you can complete a defined scenario.
When is a Microsoft certification the better fit?
Microsoft describes a progression from Fundamentals through Associate, Expert and Specialty certifications. These credentials suit roles that require a sustained body of knowledge across services, administration, development, security, data or architecture in the Microsoft ecosystem, including Azure-based work.
When is Applied Skills useful?
Applied Skills are short, task-specific lab assessments. They can be useful when a hiring manager wants evidence that you can perform a particular configuration or workflow, or when you are building a portfolio of discrete capabilities. They map to role-based certifications, but they are not simply a cheaper name for the same credential; read the stated scenario and evidence requirements.
How does Microsoft renewal work?
Microsoft says eligible certifications can be renewed annually at no cost through a short online assessment. Eligibility and timing are credential-specific, so check the certification page and complete renewal before the stated expiration window.

What does the Google Cloud certification structure mean?
Google Cloud groups credentials into foundational, associate and professional levels, with each level signaling a different breadth of responsibility.
Foundational credentials
Foundational certifications cover broad Google Cloud knowledge. They can suit people who need cloud literacy for sales, project, business or early technical work, but they are not a substitute for production design or operations experience.
Associate credentials
Associate certifications focus on fundamental deployment and maintenance skills. They are a reasonable target after you have practiced deploying and operating services, rather than immediately after reading introductory material.
Professional credentials
Professional certifications address more advanced design, implementation and management. Match one to a role that actually includes those responsibilities; the title alone does not establish seniority outside the Google Cloud ecosystem.
Google Cloud directs candidates to exam guides, study plans, learning paths and community resources. Use the exam guide as the boundary of what will be assessed, then build labs that mirror those objectives.
How should you compare a SAP credential with a cloud credential?
Use the following decision axes in order. They prevent a familiar brand or an impressive-sounding level from overriding the requirements of the job you want.
- Define the target role. Write down the work you expect to perform in the first six to 12 months: SAP configuration, cloud operations, application development, architecture, security, data engineering or another discipline.
- Check the ecosystem in real postings. Sample current job descriptions in your intended geography and industry. Record which platform, services and credential names appear; do not infer regional demand from a global marketing page.
- Match breadth to the hiring signal. Select a broad role certification when the job spans many responsibilities. Select a practical or task credential when the employer requests a specific lab skill and you can demonstrate the surrounding knowledge.
- Choose an attainable level. Follow the provider’s experience guidance. A professional-level exam attempted without the recommended hands-on background can consume more time without improving your candidacy.
- Confirm the assessment format. Decide whether you can prepare for a proctored exam, an open-book practical task, a scenario roleplay or a lab assessment. Verify the exact format because providers are changing delivery models.
- Budget the entire lifecycle. Account for preparation access, exam attempts, retakes, lab environments and renewal or stay-certified assessments. Prices and access policies change, so use the current credential page rather than an old study guide.
- Plan evidence beyond the badge. Pair the credential with a small project, architecture diagram, runbook, configuration record or work sample that demonstrates the tasks named in the exam objectives.
| Priority | Question to answer | Decision signal |
|---|---|---|
| Role fit | Will I perform the work tested by this credential? | If no, choose another track before comparing providers. |
| Platform fit | Does the employer use this provider’s services? | If the platform is absent from postings, investigate why the credential would matter. |
| Scope | Do I need broad role coverage or one practical task? | Broad need favors certification; bounded need may favor Applied Skills or a microcredential. |
| Readiness | Do I have the stated experience and lab access? | If not, start at a foundational or associate level and build practice first. |
| Upkeep | Can I meet renewal or stay-certified requirements? | Include annual assessments or other maintenance in your career plan. |
What do the published outcome numbers actually prove?
Provider-published statistics are useful context, but they are not a head-to-head ranking of hiring value. The populations, questions and dates differ.
- SAP displays claims of 39% faster promotion, 41% greater career mobility, 38% improved service level to customers and 35% faster problem solving. The reviewed SAP page does not state the year or underlying study for these percentages, so treat them as provider-displayed claims rather than independently comparable evidence.
- Google Cloud reports that 85% of surveyed learners said cloud certifications give them skills for in-demand roles and 80% said certification contributes to faster promotion. The Google Cloud/Ipsos Cloud Learning Services Market Pulse was fielded from September 17 to October 23, 2024, across the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, India, Brazil, Mexico, Japan and Australia/New Zealand. These are learner perceptions, not a controlled employment or salary study.
- AWS reported more than 1.42 million active AWS Certifications and 1.05 million unique AWS Certified individuals in January 2025. Those counts describe the size of the AWS credential population, not promotion rates, pass rates or employer preference.
None of these figures establishes a universal salary premium, equivalent difficulty or regional hiring advantage. To answer those questions, you need independent evidence tied to a defined location, job family and experience level.
What preparation and maintenance plan should you use?
Build preparation around the provider’s current exam guide and the work you want to perform, not around a memorized question bank.
Six-week preparation checklist
- Download or read the current exam guide and list every domain and weighting.
- Mark each objective as “can do,” “can explain” or “unknown.”
- Reserve hands-on time in the relevant SAP, AWS, Microsoft or Google Cloud environment.
- Complete at least one end-to-end scenario that combines the domains instead of practicing isolated clicks.
- Use official learning paths, training resources, exam-preparation material and community guidance supplied by the provider.
- Schedule the assessment only after you can explain design trade-offs and recover from a misconfiguration.
For practical or lab-based assessments, practice reading a scenario, documenting assumptions and finishing within a time limit. For proctored exams, practice eliminating distractors and selecting the service or design that best fits stated constraints. Keep a record of the credential’s renewal date and any annual assessment so maintenance does not become an unexpected gap on your résumé.
What are the most common selection mistakes?
Choosing the provider before the role
A popular platform is not automatically relevant to your desired job. Fix this by collecting several current postings and identifying the services and responsibilities that repeat.
Treating level names as equivalent
An associate, professional or specialty label belongs to one provider’s framework. Compare exam objectives and recommended experience instead of ranking labels across catalogs.

SAP’s practical rollout and Microsoft’s lab-based Applied Skills show why old preparation advice can become inaccurate. Confirm format, language, delivery method and system requirements on the live credential page before paying or scheduling.
Counting a badge as experience
Certification demonstrates preparation for an assessment; it does not by itself show production troubleshooting, stakeholder communication or project delivery. Add a documented lab, migration exercise, configuration project or work sample that reflects the target role.
Using promotional statistics as proof of ROI
Provider surveys and credential counts use different methods and cannot answer which badge produces the best outcome for you. Evaluate local postings, prerequisites, total study time and the maintenance burden.
Is one of these certifications universally better?
No. The official program descriptions establish how each provider structures and assesses its own credentials, but they do not establish that SAP, AWS, Microsoft or Google Cloud is preferred by all employers or delivers superior career outcomes. The strongest choice is the credential whose tested tasks, platform and maintenance requirements match your next role.
If your target is SAP consulting or business-process implementation, begin with the relevant SAP role certification. If your target is cloud infrastructure, development, architecture, security, data or operations, begin with the provider named in the projects and job postings you are pursuing, then select the level that matches your actual experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I earn a foundational cloud certification before an associate credential?
Use the foundational level when you need broad terminology or have little cloud experience. If you already perform the associate-level tasks in a lab or job, review the provider’s recommended experience and exam objectives rather than taking a lower exam solely for its label.
Can a Microsoft Applied Skills assessment replace a certification on my résumé?
It can document a specific lab capability, but it does not represent the same breadth as an exam-based role certification. List the exact scenario and tools, and follow the employer’s wording when a posting requests a named certification.
How can I tell whether an older exam guide is still valid?
Check the credential’s live page for its current version, objectives, delivery format and retirement notices. AWS explicitly notes that exam updates and retirement dates are time-sensitive, and other providers also revise requirements.

Do cloud certifications transfer between providers?
The underlying concepts—identity, networking, storage, monitoring and security—can transfer, but the credential itself validates provider-specific services and practices. Employers may value cross-cloud experience, yet you should not present one provider’s badge as equivalent to another’s.
