Short answer: SAP AI Units are not a universal, automatically included allowance on every RISE with SAP contract. Base AI is included with SAP cloud subscriptions at no additional cost, while Premium AI uses pooled AI Units as a metered currency. SAP’s catalog lists AI Unit-related RISE with SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private-edition premium, premium plus and upgrade-option offerings, but it does not publish one allocation that applies to every customer. Your order form, service description and amendments are the controlling evidence.
For 2026 planning, treat AI Units as an annual subscription pool: SAP sells them through SKU 8019164, the units generally expire after 12 months, and SAP-delivered agents consume 0.02 units per agent action. A single business task can involve several actions, so the number of tasks is not the same as the metered quantity.

What are SAP AI Units?
AI Units are SAP’s pooled virtual currency for accessing and running Premium AI capabilities across SAP solutions. They are designed to let one purchased pool support multiple metered Premium AI services instead of requiring a separate allowance for every feature.
That pool is distinct from the AI features SAP classifies as Base AI. SAP’s pricing FAQ describes Base AI as the foundational AI included with every SAP cloud subscription at no additional cost. Premium AI is the usage-priced layer, increasingly focused on agents in 2026, and it consumes AI Units when a metered capability performs work.

AI Units are purchased annually through SKU 8019164. SAP’s commercial-details material describes a 12-month validity period with “Use it or lose it,” “No Rollover” and “No SWAP” terms, alongside enterprise-level pooling. In practical terms, unused capacity normally cannot be carried into a new annual period or exchanged between products outside the rules in your agreement.
Are SAP AI Units included in every RISE contract?
No universal inclusion or quantity is published. SAP’s public AI Unit catalog names RISE with SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private-edition premium, premium plus and upgrade-option offerings among AI Unit-related solutions, which establishes a commercial relationship but not an identical entitlement for every RISE customer.

A customer may have a stated AI Unit quantity, a separately purchasable block, a legacy entitlement, or no Premium AI allowance at all. The document that matters is the signed commercial package, not a generic web-page description.
Documents that control the answer
- Order form: Look for “AI Units,” SKU 8019164, a capacity quantity, block size, term and price.
- Service description: Check which Premium AI capabilities are covered, the applicable meter and any technical prerequisites.
- Amendments and renewal notices: These can add, remove or transition SKUs and may supersede earlier language.
- Entitlement or consumption statements: Reconcile the purchased quantity with the pool shown in SAP for Me.
What is the difference between Base AI and Premium AI?
Base AI is included with an SAP cloud subscription; Premium AI is metered and paid through AI Units or a separately defined per-user offer. The distinction affects budgeting, contract review and what happens when a pool is exhausted.

“Included” does not mean every SAP AI feature is free. It means the feature is classified in the Base AI layer for the relevant cloud subscription. Ask SAP which layer a named capability belongs to before assuming there will be no charge.
How are AI Units metered in 2026?
The meter depends on the Premium AI capability. SAP’s published 2026 examples include action-based, record-based, request-based and user-month pricing.

The agent rate is especially easy to misunderstand. At 0.02 units per action, 50 actions consume one AI Unit, but a process that appears to be one “task” could call an agent several times for planning, tool use, validation and completion. SAP’s statement that all SAP-delivered autonomous enterprise agents in 2026 are priced at 0.02 AI Units per agent action does not convert directly into a price per business process.
How many AI Units might an agent workload need?
Start with the number of billable actions, then add the other meters used by the solution. Do not estimate from employee count alone unless the service is explicitly priced per user.

- Define the business task: Write down what starts the workflow and what constitutes completion.
- Map the agent plan: Identify every SAP-delivered agent involved and obtain the expected actions per completed task.
- Estimate volume: Multiply actions per task by tasks per month, then by the number of active months in the annual term.
- Add other meters: Include document-grounding records, SAP Document AI requests, Joule for Developers requests and any Joule for Consultants users.
- Apply the contract pool: Compare the total with the annual quantity and block size in the order form, not with a generic public package.
- Stress-test usage: Model peak periods, retries, exceptions and parallel workflows; these can increase actions even when the number of business tasks is unchanged.
Illustrative arithmetic
If an agent completed 10,000 billable actions, the published rate implies 200 AI Units (10,000 × 0.02). This is arithmetic from SAP’s metric, not a forecast or quotation. A credible customer estimate still needs the actual actions per task, concurrency, document volume, user count for Joule for Consultants and the negotiated contract price.
Which RISE contract terms should procurement inspect?
Ask for a line-by-line explanation of the AI allowance before signing or renewing. The following checks expose most hidden assumptions.

- Block size: SAP’s public package description refers to blocks of 100 capacity units per year. Confirm whether your RISE amendment uses that same denomination.
- Term: Record the start date, end date and whether the allowance is a one-year, two-year or three-year commitment.
- Pooling scope: Determine whether units are pooled at enterprise level, across tenants, or restricted to a specific environment.
- Expiry: Confirm the 12-month validity window and the exact expiry date for each purchase. Do not assume unused units roll over.
- Eligible services: Map every planned agent and Premium AI feature to its metric and edition requirement.
- Overage or exhaustion: Find the clause describing blocked requests, additional purchases, temporary suspension or another remedy. Public material does not establish one behavior for every RISE contract.
- Renewal and amendments: Check auto-renewal, price changes, transition language and whether a new SKU replaces a legacy one.
- Ownership and access: Confirm who can view consumption, purchase more units and approve use by subsidiaries or shared service centers.
What does SAP’s public AI Unit price mean for a RISE customer?
SAP’s public AI Units page displays USD 67.17 monthly for packages measured in blocks of 100 capacity units per year, with one-to-three-year contract duration and auto-renewal. SAP says packages are priced at the standard list price at the contract date.
That figure is a reference list price, not proof of the amount embedded in a RISE agreement. RISE pricing is negotiated and can bundle infrastructure, software, services and entitlements in ways that do not mirror a standalone catalog package. Use the public number to understand the unit of sale, then obtain the actual price and included quantity from your account team.

What happens when the AI Unit pool runs out?
There is no single publicly stated exhaustion behavior for every RISE arrangement. Depending on the service and contract, a request might require an additional purchase, become unavailable or follow a specified overage process; your order form and service description must answer which outcome applies.
Before production rollout, ask SAP to demonstrate the warning threshold and the exact administrative action required to add capacity. Keep a contingency process for critical work, because an agent workflow can stop even when the underlying S/4HANA process remains available.

Questions to put in writing
- At what remaining balance does SAP for Me show a warning?
- Are additional AI Units available immediately, and under what SKU and price?
- Can a renewal or amendment add capacity mid-term?
- Are failed, retried or test actions metered?
- Which administrator receives exhaustion notifications?
How should teams monitor and govern consumption?
SAP directs customers to SAP for Me for consumption and expiry monitoring, and to an Account Executive or Customer Success Partner for quotes. Make monitoring an operating process rather than a renewal-time investigation.
- Assign an owner: Give procurement, the SAP platform team and finance clear responsibility for the pool.
- Review monthly: Capture beginning balance, consumption by capability, forecast depletion date and units approaching expiry.
- Tag workloads: Separate production, development, testing and proof-of-concept usage where your reporting permits.
- Reconcile invoices: Match consumption records to SKU, contract term and any amendment before approving a charge.
- Set internal limits: Require approval for new agents, high-volume document processing and large user increases.
- Reforecast after releases: A workflow change that adds an agent step can increase actions without increasing transaction count.
Why might an AI charge appear on an SAP renewal?
A renewal charge can reflect a newly purchased AI Unit pool, a transition from a legacy SKU, an expanded Premium AI scope or an auto-renewing package. It is not evidence that every RISE customer receives the same entitlement.

Reconcile the charge in this order: compare the invoice with the prior order form, locate SKU 8019164 or the referenced legacy SKU, verify the annual quantity and term, and check amendments for a transition clause. Then compare the billed item with the consumption and expiry view in SAP for Me. If the documents do not align, ask your Account Executive or Customer Success Partner for a written mapping of SKU, capability, quantity and renewal date.
Which purchasing approach fits your workload?
Choose the approach that matches the meter, not the marketing label. A stable user population may be easier to budget when the service is explicitly priced per user, while variable agent or document workloads need an action or request forecast.

The key commercial decision is whether the contracted pool, term and expiry rules match the workload’s variability. If they do not, negotiate the amendment before deploying the feature rather than treating a renewal invoice as the first capacity warning.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one department reserve part of an enterprise AI Unit pool?
SAP’s commercial-details material describes enterprise-level pooling, but that does not by itself create departmental reservations or spending limits. If business units need ring-fenced capacity, have the allocation and reporting method written into your internal governance or contract amendment.
Does a Base AI feature ever become a Premium AI charge?
SAP is moving most non-agentic generative AI capabilities into Base AI while refocusing Premium AI on agents in 2026. Feature classification can change by release and service edition, so record the classification and effective date supplied for your specific subscription.
What evidence should finance retain for an AI Unit invoice?
Keep the signed order form, the service description, every amendment, the SKU and quantity, the term and expiry date, and a SAP for Me consumption export for the billed period. This file lets finance distinguish a new purchase from an automatic renewal or a legacy-SKU transition.
Can a proof of concept use the production AI Unit pool?
Pooling may allow shared consumption, but the contract may restrict environments or eligible services. Confirm that development and test use are permitted, then tag or report that usage separately so a pilot cannot silently consume capacity reserved for production.
