Yes, the SanDisk Optimus GX 7100M (also styled GX7100M) is one of the fastest practical SSD upgrades for a Steam Deck, MSI Claw, Surface device, or other system with a 30 mm M.2 2230 slot. Its PCIe 4.0 x4 controller, 7,250 MB/s rated reads, and unusually strong random performance put it at the top of the small-drive class. The trade-offs are substantial: the drive is expensive, can run hot, and only fits hardware designed for the 22 x 30 mm 2230 format. The 1TB model is the sensible choice when price matters; the 2TB model makes more sense when it replaces a small internal drive and you can use the extra capacity. Confirm the device’s mounting, firmware, and clearance before ordering.
What is the SanDisk Optimus GX 7100M?
The Optimus GX 7100M is a single-sided M.2 2230 NVMe SSD. “2230” describes its 22 mm width and 30 mm length, making it dramatically shorter than the 80 mm M.2 2280 drives used in most desktop PCs and many laptops. It uses a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface and NVMe 2.0 protocol, and is sold in 1TB and 2TB capacities.

A conventional 2280 drive cannot simply be screwed into a 2230 bay, while the GX 7100M can fit devices specifically designed around the shorter module. SanDisk names Steam Deck, MSI Claw, Microsoft Surface systems, and Dell laptops with an M.2 2230 slot as compatible categories, and lists Windows 10 or newer support. Compatibility still depends on the exact model, because a device may have a different retainer, firmware whitelist, thermal envelope, or available height.
The drive uses SanDisk TLC 3D CBA NAND, Host Memory Buffer (HMB) rather than onboard DRAM, and nCache 4.0. HMB lets the SSD borrow a small portion of system memory for mapping data instead of carrying a dedicated DRAM chip. That helps preserve the short, single-sided design, but the host device must provide working system memory and firmware support for the feature.

What are the Optimus GX 7100M’s specifications?
SanDisk’s 2025 datasheet and product information give the same headline ratings for both capacities. The figures below are manufacturer ratings, not guaranteed results in every handheld or laptop.
| Specification | 1TB | 2TB |
|---|---|---|
| Form factor | M.2 2230, single-sided | M.2 2230, single-sided |
| Interface | PCIe 4.0 x4 | PCIe 4.0 x4 |

“Up to” is important. A 2230 drive installed in a handheld may be limited by the host’s PCIe generation, lane configuration, power limits, cooling, or operating-system workload. Sequential ratings describe large, orderly transfers; game loading and desktop use often depend more on small random operations, latency, and CPU decompression than on the maximum sequential number.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow fast is the GX 7100M in independent testing?
Independent reviews place the drive at the top of the PCIe 4.0 2230 segment, while also warning that its heat output matters. Tom’s Hardware described it as an exceptional all-around performer and concluded: “The Sandisk Optimus GX 7100M is as good as it gets for M.2 2230 with high performance and power efficiency.” The same review listed hot-running behavior as a con.
PCWorld called it the fastest PCIe 4.0 SSD it had tested, highlighting particularly strong 4K results and reporting no catastrophic slowdown during long writes. Jon L. Jacobi, a PCWorld contributor, wrote: “If you want the absolute best SSD performance for your handheld game machine, or for that matter, any PCIe 4.0 device, Sandisk’s new Optimus GX 7100M is it.” Those are review conclusions under specific test conditions, not a promise that every Steam Deck or laptop will reach 7,250 MB/s.
The practical benefit is greatest when the host can expose PCIe 4.0 x4 bandwidth and the workload issues many small requests. Large game installs, file transfers, shader-cache operations, and application launches can benefit from the drive’s high throughput. On a device with a slower interface or aggressive power limit, the difference from a cheaper SSD may be smaller than the specification sheet suggests.

How does it compare with the Crucial P310?
The Crucial P310 is the most useful direct comparison because it is also available in the 2230 format and costs much less. The trade-off is lower rated endurance. Dong Knows Tech’s comparison table lists the following figures.
Recommended Free Tools
| Drive | 2230 fit | 1TB endurance | 2TB endurance | Price position |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SanDisk Optimus GX 7100M | Yes | 600 TBW | 1,200 TBW | Premium; Tom’s Hardware listed $229.99 for 1TB and $449.99 for 2TB in its 2026 specification table |
| Crucial P310 | Available in 2230 versions | 220 TBW | 440 TBW | Much cheaper; the cited comparison does not state a single current price |
The GX 7100M therefore buys more than benchmark headroom. Its rated write lifetime is approximately 2.7 times the P310’s at each listed capacity. TBW is a warranty endurance rating rather than a forecast of the day a drive will fail, so it should be treated as one durability indicator, not a guarantee of service life.
Choose the P310 when the host cannot use PCIe 4.0 x4 speed, the drive will see ordinary game and office workloads, or the price difference is more important than maximum performance and endurance. Choose the GX 7100M when the device is thermally and electrically capable of using it and you specifically want the fastest available 2230-class option.
How much does the GX 7100M cost?
Tom’s Hardware listed $229.99 for the 1TB model and $449.99 for the 2TB model in its 2026 review specification table. The same review reported a $449.99 Amazon price for the 2TB drive at publication. These are time-specific listings, not fixed manufacturer prices; stock, retailer, region, and promotions can change the amount you pay.
| Capacity | Price cited by Tom’s Hardware (2026) | Who should consider it |
|---|---|---|
| 1TB | $229.99 | Owners who already have adequate game storage and want the lower entry price |
| 2TB | $449.99 | Buyers replacing a small internal drive and willing to pay the premium for twice the capacity |
The 2TB model is not merely a larger cache of games; it can prevent the repeated uninstall-and-reinstall cycle that is common on handhelds with small internal drives. However, its price is high enough that a cheaper 2230 SSD may deliver better value if your game library is modest or your host cannot exploit PCIe 4.0 performance.

Will it fit a Steam Deck, MSI Claw, Surface, or Dell laptop?
It will fit only a device that accepts an M.2 2230 module and provides the correct electrical and mechanical support. A product category appearing on SanDisk’s compatibility list is not a substitute for checking your exact model.
- Confirm the length: the slot must support 30 mm modules. A 2280-only bay needs a suitable adapter or mounting solution; the GX 7100M does not include a 2280 adapter.
- Check the retaining hardware: some systems use a screw, others use a captive post, bracket, or a proprietary retainer. The screw position must line up with the 2230 notch.
- Check clearance: the module is single-sided, but nearby shields, thermal pads, battery parts, or the back cover can still interfere.
- Check firmware and operating-system support: SanDisk lists Windows 10 and newer, but a handheld’s firmware may impose additional storage rules.
- Read the service instructions: opening a device can affect warranty terms, and the manufacturer’s procedure identifies safe power-down, battery, and screw-removal steps.
Do not force the drive into a 2280 slot or leave it unsupported at an angle. A correct electrical connection with an incorrect retainer can still lead to movement, intermittent contact, or damage when the device is reassembled.
How should you install the drive?
The exact disassembly sequence differs by device, so use the model’s official service documentation. The safe workflow is:
- Back up the existing drive. Make a full image or clone and verify that important saves and personal files open from the backup.
- Record the current setup. Note the operating-system version, encryption state, recovery method, and partition layout before removing anything.
- Shut down completely. Do not rely on sleep mode. Disconnect external power and follow the device manual’s battery-isolation procedure.
- Open the enclosure using the specified tools. Keep screws organized by location; different lengths can damage internal parts if swapped.
- Remove the original 2230 module and transfer any approved thermal material. Do not cover contacts or place a pad where the manufacturer did not provide clearance.
- Insert the GX 7100M at the correct angle, lower it flat, and secure the original retainer. It should sit level without pressure.
- Reassemble and restore the operating system. Use the manufacturer’s recovery image or your verified clone, then install updates.
- Check detection and health. Confirm the full capacity appears, run a short file-copy test, and monitor temperatures during a sustained workload before reinstalling your complete library.
If the device does not detect the SSD, power it down before reseating anything. Recheck the retainer, connector orientation, firmware version, and whether the system expects a specific 2230-sided layout. Never troubleshoot an open, powered device.
Does the GX 7100M run hot?
Heat is the clearest weakness identified by testing. Tom’s Hardware praised its efficiency but listed hot-running behavior as a con. In a compact handheld, the SSD sits near the battery and other heat sources, with less airflow than a desktop expansion card. Sustained writes can therefore reduce performance through thermal management even when short benchmarks look excellent.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Before installation, verify that the original thermal pad or shield can contact the new module without bending it. Do not add a thick aftermarket heatsink if it prevents the enclosure from closing or presses against the board. Keep the device’s vents clear, avoid testing under a blanket or soft surface, and check temperatures during a long install rather than judging cooling from a brief benchmark.
Heat does not make the drive unsuitable. It means the host system’s cooling design becomes part of the purchase decision. A well-cooled PCIe 4.0 system can make better use of the GX 7100M’s speed than a tightly enclosed handheld running at a low power limit.
What do the endurance and warranty figures mean?
SanDisk rates the 1TB model at 600 terabytes written (TBW) and the 2TB model at 1,200 TBW, with a five-year limited warranty for both. The larger model’s higher TBW rating reflects its greater NAND capacity and gives heavy users more rated write headroom.
TBW counts host data written to the SSD under the manufacturer’s warranty rules. It does not mean you must stop using the drive when that number is reached, nor does it guarantee that every component will last five years. Firmware, controller health, NAND wear, operating temperature, and the warranty’s regional terms also matter. Keep backups regardless of the rating.

| Decision factor | 1TB | 2TB |
|---|---|---|
| Up-front cost | Lower; $229.99 cited by Tom’s Hardware in 2026 | Higher; $449.99 cited by Tom’s Hardware in 2026 |
| Rated endurance | 600 TBW | 1,200 TBW |
| Best fit | Adequate existing storage, budget-conscious upgrade, or secondary drive | Replacing a small internal drive and keeping many large games installed |

Because the rated speed is the same, capacity—not peak throughput—should decide between the two. Select 1TB if the purchase price is the limiting factor or your device already has a practical storage solution. Select 2TB if opening the device is inconvenient and the extra space will prevent near-term replacement. The 2TB price premium is difficult to justify for a light workload, but its doubled capacity and TBW rating can make the total ownership cost more reasonable for a heavily used handheld.

What are the GX 7100M’s main strengths and weaknesses?
Strengths
- Exceptional rated speed for a 2230 SSD, with 7,250 MB/s sequential reads and 6,900 MB/s writes.
- Very strong 4K and random-performance results in PCWorld’s testing.
- Higher endurance ratings than the Crucial P310 figures listed by Dong Knows Tech.
- Single-sided construction suited to many thin devices.
- Five-year limited warranty.
- Available in 1TB and 2TB capacities.
Weaknesses
- High purchase prices, especially for the 2TB model.
- Hot-running behavior reported by Tom’s Hardware.
- Performance depends on a PCIe 4.0 x4-capable host and adequate cooling.
- 2230 fit is not universal; a 2280-only system needs a separate mounting solution.
- HMB means there is no dedicated onboard DRAM.
Is the SanDisk Optimus GX 7100M worth buying?
The GX 7100M is worth buying when your device genuinely supports M.2 2230, can provide PCIe 4.0 x4 bandwidth, and you value maximum performance more than purchase price. It is the strongest choice for a high-end handheld upgrade or compact laptop where you want top-tier random and sequential results in the shortest available format.
It is not the automatic best value. A cheaper 2230 SSD is more sensible when your system is interface-limited, your workload is mostly game storage and ordinary applications, or the premium would force you to buy less capacity. Heat and enclosure clearance must also be checked before ordering. The 1TB model is the balanced entry point; the 2TB version is the better long-term replacement for a cramped internal drive.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Steam Deck need a PCIe 4.0 SSD this fast?
No. A compatible PCIe 3.0 or slower drive can still provide a responsive system, and the handheld’s interface and power limits may prevent the GX 7100M from reaching its rated throughput. The faster model is mainly useful when you want the highest available 2230 performance and plan to keep the drive through a future device upgrade.
Is Host Memory Buffer a problem for gaming?
HMB is a design choice rather than a defect: the SSD keeps mapping information in system memory instead of using a dedicated DRAM chip. Most gaming workloads will not treat that distinction as a visible problem, but systems with unusual firmware or very limited available memory should be checked for proper NVMe support.
Can I move my existing operating system to the new 2230 drive?
Usually, you can either clone the old drive or reinstall from the device maker’s recovery media. A clone preserves applications and settings, while a clean installation can remove accumulated software problems; in both cases, verify backups and encryption-recovery information before opening the device.
Will a thermal pad improve the GX 7100M’s performance?
Only if the device was designed to use one and the pad makes reliable contact with an approved shield or heat spreader. An overly thick pad or aftermarket heatsink can press on the module, prevent the cover from closing, or worsen contact elsewhere, so follow the host manufacturer’s clearance guidance.
