The Samsung SRS656MBFH4 is a very large side-by-side refrigerator with 616 L of stated usable capacity, a 21.5-inch Family Hub screen, tank-fed ice and water, and a matte-black finish. It is a sensible fit only if you need its screen and non-plumbed dispenser, can accommodate a 912 mm-wide, 127 kg appliance, and find verified stock at a substantial discount. CHOICE’s 2021 listing records a 2.5-star energy rating and claimed use of 625 kWh per year, while another retailer specification lists three stars, so check the physical energy label before buying. The model is marked discontinued or unavailable by major listings; treat any remaining unit as old stock or second-hand and confirm warranty and condition in writing.
What is the Samsung SRS656MBFH4?
The SRS656MBFH4 is Samsung’s matte-black, flat-door, side-by-side Family Hub refrigerator. Samsung’s 2022-revision specification sheet gives it 616 L of usable total capacity: 398 L for the refrigerator compartment and 218 L for the freezer. A Digital Inverter Compressor, SpaceMax insulation, multi-flow cooling and a non-plumbed ice-and-water dispenser define the hardware, while Family Hub adds a large external touchscreen and speaker.

It is not a compact smart appliance. The cabinet is 912 mm wide, 1,780 mm high and 716 mm deep, with a net weight of 127 kg. Those dimensions are before you allow room for door movement, ventilation, packaging, wall irregularities and the route from the delivery vehicle to the kitchen.
The product’s availability is the first practical complication. CHOICE’s 2021 test listing marks it discontinued, and Andoo describes it as no longer available. Appliances Online still retains a specification page accessed in 2026, but a live product page does not guarantee stock. If you find one, establish whether it is unused old stock, a display unit or a used appliance before comparing its price with current models.

How much space does the SRS656MBFH4 provide?
Use Samsung’s compartment figures when planning food storage, and treat other published volume figures as a separate measurement rather than a contradiction.

CHOICE rounds the appliance to about 178 cm high, 92 cm wide and 72 cm deep and classifies it as extra-large. The 657 L figure should not be added to Samsung’s 616 L: manufacturers and test organisations can use different methods, including gross volume versus usable storage. For a buying comparison, use the same capacity definition across every model.
What does SpaceMax change?
Samsung says SpaceMax uses high-efficiency insulation to make the walls thinner without increasing the outside dimensions. The intended benefit is more interior storage within the same footprint. It does not make the cabinet narrower than the published 912 mm, nor does it remove the need for clearance around the doors and rear of the appliance.
What features matter in everyday use?
Family Hub screen and speaker
The external Family Hub display is a 21.5-inch Full HD panel. Samsung’s brochure also specifies a 25 W external speaker. The Family Board feature is designed for household communication: you can display photos, write or type notes, add stickers and make drawings. That can be useful in a kitchen where several people need a shared message board, but it also adds a screen that must be kept clean and connected to power.
The specification sheet lists Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and SmartThings support. Connectivity is therefore part of the product’s feature set, not a requirement for the refrigerator to provide basic cooling. If your household will not use a shared display, the screen and speaker are unlikely to justify choosing this older model over a simpler large refrigerator.

Tank-fed ice and water
The dispenser is non-plumbed. Instead of connecting a permanent water line, you fill the supplied 5 L tank. This makes placement easier in a kitchen without a nearby water connection and avoids drilling or plumbing work. The trade-off is routine manual refilling, and the tank consumes some refrigerator space.

Cooling and convenience modes
Samsung’s specification sheet lists No Frost, Multi Flow, All Around Cooling, Power Cool, Power Freeze and Vacation Mode. No Frost is intended to avoid routine manual defrosting. Multi Flow and All Around Cooling describe how cold air is distributed through the compartments, while Power Cool and Power Freeze are temporary rapid-cooling modes. Vacation Mode is intended for periods when the refrigerator is left largely unused; confirm the exact compartment behaviour in the manual before activating it with food still inside.
Exterior design
Recessed handles and flat doors reduce the amount of hardware protruding into a walkway. They do not reduce the door-swing envelope: the doors still need to open far enough for drawers and shelves to be removed. Measure the approach path and the final opening angle, not just the cabinet face.
How much electricity does it use?
CHOICE’s 2021 listing gives the SRS656MBFH4 a 2.5-star energy rating and a claimed annual consumption of 625 kWh. A separate retailer specification sheet reports three stars for what appears to be the same model family. That discrepancy may reflect a market, label or revision difference, so the rating should be treated as unresolved until you inspect the energy label on the exact appliance.

For a used or old-stock unit, photograph the energy label and model plate before paying. Compare annual kWh, not star count alone, because a larger refrigerator can consume more electricity even when its star rating looks similar to a smaller model. The 625 kWh figure is a published claim from the 2021 listing, not a guarantee of your household’s bill.
What did independent testing establish?
CHOICE records a 2021 test year, the energy figures above, an extra-large classification and a listed price of $3,399. Its numerical expert scores for temperature stability, temperature evenness, noise, reliability, satisfaction and related tests are member-only on the retrieved page. Those scores should therefore not be presented as known results.
This leaves a clear boundary for a responsible review: the capacity, dimensions, features and published energy figures can be checked, but the available material does not support a precise claim about how quietly this refrigerator runs, how evenly it holds temperature or how reliable it is compared with competitors.
Is the SRS656MBFH4 discontinued, and can you still buy one?
CHOICE marks the model discontinued, and Andoo lists it as no longer available. Appliances Online retains a product and specification page accessed in 2026, but remaining inventory, display stock and marketplace listings can change quickly. Appliances Online lists a two-year manufacturer warranty and a 10-year warranty on compressor parts. The wording matters: “compressor parts” is not the same as ten years of full-appliance, labour or call-out coverage. Obtain the complete warranty terms for the unit’s sales region and ask whether the warranty transfers if you buy used or clearance stock.

- Plan for the weight. At 127 kg, this is a two-person-or-professional-delivery job, not an appliance to carry casually up stairs. Confirm that the floor, doorway and delivery equipment can handle it.

Is the Samsung SRS656MBFH4 worth buying?
Buy it only when three conditions are met: the exact unit is physically inspected or sold with clear returns, the installation route and 127 kg weight are manageable, and the price reflects discontinued status. The model makes the most sense for a household that specifically wants a large side-by-side layout, Family Hub’s shared screen and a tank-fed dispenser without plumbing.
Pass on it when you need predictable current support, a confirmed energy rating, easy delivery or independently published performance scores.
