Short answer: The Samsung SRS6500BA is a capable 615-litre side-by-side refrigerator for Australian kitchens, but it is worth buying only if you can provide a mains-water connection and will use its connected features. Its 9-inch AI Home screen, SmartThings monitoring and voice control add useful inventory and household information, while the 4-star label and claimed 450 kWh annual consumption are respectable rather than exceptional. CHOICE’s public verdict describes it as a good refrigerator whose smart functions can help, but says it is probably not worth paying extra over an equivalent non-smart Samsung model. Published prices have ranged from A$2,999 to A$3,149, so the value depends on the live deal and your need for plumbing and smart controls.
Is the Samsung SRS6500BA worth buying?
Buy it when you want very large capacity, through-door water and ice, and a screen that connects with a Samsung smart-home setup. Skip it when your kitchen has no water point, when you prefer a simpler appliance, or when a French-door layout would make wide shelves and large platters easier to use.

The model is sold for Australia as the Samsung SRS6500BA and is cross-referenced by support and retailer pages with the family identifier RS90F64D4FSA. That second number is useful when looking for installation information or manuals. CHOICE tested the 615-litre AI Home model in accredited laboratories in its 2025 test program. Its public review calls the refrigerator good and says the smart functions can help with grocery control, connected devices and viewing news, but the detailed temperature, noise, reliability, satisfaction and overall rating fields are restricted to members. No numerical performance score should be assumed from the public summary.
What are the Samsung SRS6500BA’s specifications?
The following figures bring together the published Australian specifications. Where the capacity labels differ, the range is shown rather than pretending the sources used identical measurement methods.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. How much usable storage does the 615-litre capacity provide?
The headline 615 L is the combined rated capacity. CHOICE separates it into 397 L of claimed refrigerator space and 213 L of claimed freezer space, while an Appliances Online specification lists 397 L refrigerator and 218 L freezer usable volume. Report the freezer as roughly 213–218 L because one source uses claimed capacity and the other uses usable volume; neither figure should be treated as a measurement made under the other source’s method.
Refrigerator section
With about 397 L allocated to fresh food, the chilled side can accommodate a large weekly shop, tall bottles and prepared meals. A side-by-side arrangement gives every shelf a short vertical reach, which is convenient when you want a quick view of small containers. The trade-off is shelf width: a wide casserole, pizza box or party platter may need to be turned, split between shelves or stored elsewhere.
Freezer section
Approximately 213–218 L is substantial freezer space for a side-by-side, but the tall, relatively narrow compartment favors baskets, drawers and stackable packages over very wide items. Check the shelf and door-bin layout in the showroom or manual if you regularly freeze large trays. Capacity numbers do not describe how much of that space is occupied by ice-making equipment, shelves or door bins.
Side-by-side versus French-door layout
| Consideration | SRS6500BA side-by-side | Typical French-door alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Door movement | Two narrower doors usually need less clearance in front of the appliance. | Wide lower freezer drawer pulls into the room and needs clear floor space. |
| Fresh-food shelf width | Narrower vertical shelves; tall bottles fit naturally. | Wider shelves suit platters and broad containers. |
| Freezer access | Eye-level vertical freezer with quick access to smaller packages. | Large pull-out drawer is useful for bulky frozen food but requires bending. |
| Kitchen fit | Requires room for two door swings and the specified side/top/rear ventilation gaps. | Clearance depends on the particular model and drawer travel. |
There is no universally better layout. Measure your largest containers and the path from delivery entrance to kitchen before choosing.
Does the Samsung SRS6500BA need plumbing?
Yes. The door dispenser supplies water and ice through a plumbed system, so installation requires a compatible mains-water connection. It is not a self-contained, fill-by-hand dispenser according to the published product information.
Installation checklist
- Confirm the water point. Have a licensed installer verify that the kitchen has a suitable cold-water connection where the refrigerator will stand. Do not assume an existing dishwasher or sink hose can be shared without the correct fitting.
- Measure the complete route. Record doorway, hallway, lift and benchtop clearances, then compare them with the refrigerator’s packed and unpacked dimensions in the current Samsung documentation. The available data does not provide the cabinet’s height, width or depth, so do not rely on the 615-litre capacity to infer them.
- Reserve ventilation space. Appliances Online specifies 50 mm at the top and both sides and 100 mm behind the unit. Treat those as installation requirements, not optional gaps to close for a flush look.
- Plan door opening. Leave enough room for both doors to open fully and for shelves or bins to be removed during cleaning. A wall immediately beside a hinge can prevent drawers from sliding out even when the cabinet technically fits.
- Level the cabinet and test for leaks. After the water line is connected, run the dispenser and ice maker only after the installer has checked every joint. Wipe the connection dry and inspect it again after the first cooling cycle.
- Flush the new filter and line. Follow the supplied instructions for flushing before drinking the first dispensed water or using the first ice. Keep the installation record for warranty questions.
If you cannot provide permanent plumbing, choose a refrigerator designed for a refillable tank instead; do not buy the SRS6500BA expecting the dispenser to work unconnected.

What smart features do you actually get?
The smart package centers on a 9-inch AI Home LCD, Wi-Fi connectivity, Samsung SmartThings integration and Bixby voice control. These features are most useful when they solve a routine problem—checking the refrigerator remotely, coordinating compatible devices or seeing household information—rather than simply displaying a large screen on the door.
AI Home LCD
The screen is the refrigerator’s local control point. It can present appliance information and connected functions without requiring a phone for every adjustment. A display does add another electronic component to an appliance that otherwise only needs cooling controls, so consider whether everyone in the household will use it before paying a premium for the smart version.
SmartThings and monitoring
SmartThings connectivity can provide remote status and compatible energy-monitoring functions. Setup requires Wi-Fi, a Samsung account and compatible services. Features, menus and supported devices can change with software updates and regional availability; a feature shown in a demonstration is not necessarily available on every Australian account.
Bixby voice control
Bixby allows supported voice commands through the connected system. Voice control is convenient when your hands are wet or full, but it depends on account sign-in, network access and the command set supported by the current software. Treat it as an extra control method, not as a reason to ignore the physical controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Compatible energy monitoring and AI Energy Mode functions require supported services, an account and Wi-Fi. They can help you observe consumption or adjust operation, but they do not change the published 4-star label or guarantee a particular household saving. If your network is unreliable, the refrigerator’s connected reporting will be less useful even though the appliance remains a refrigerator first.
How good is the SRS6500BA in independent testing?
CHOICE states that its experts carried out a full test of the 615-litre AI Home model in accredited laboratories. That establishes that the model underwent independent testing, but the public page does not reveal the numerical temperature stability, noise, reliability, satisfaction or expert-rating results. Consumer NZ’s comparison page, updated in September 2026, also does not expose a complete set of member-only performance fields.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Consequently, it is reasonable to describe the SRS6500BA as independently tested and publicly characterized by CHOICE as a good refrigerator, but not to claim a specific cooling score, decibel level or reliability ranking. If those measurements are decisive for your purchase, obtain the current member data or ask the retailer for the exact test figures rather than inferring them from the smart-feature list.
What will it cost to run?
The published energy label is four stars with claimed consumption of 450 kWh per year. Your annual electricity cost is approximately:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →450 kWh × your electricity tariff per kWh
For example, use the tariff shown on your own bill, including any time-of-use rate that applies to the hours the refrigerator operates. The 450 kWh figure is a standardized claim for comparison; actual use changes with room temperature, door openings, food load, ice production, temperature settings, ventilation clearance and whether rapid-cooling modes are used frequently. A refrigerator pressed against a wall without the specified ventilation can also run differently from the test condition.
Power Cool and Power Freeze are useful after a large restock, but leaving rapid modes active unnecessarily can increase consumption. Keep the doors closed while the compressor is recovering, allow hot food to cool as recommended by food-safety guidance before loading, and clean the condenser or ventilation areas according to Samsung’s maintenance instructions.
What price and warranty should you expect in Australia?
Prices are moving targets. CHOICE lists A$2,999, while Appliances Online and Harvey Norman pages showed A$3,149 when crawled. Those are Australian listing snapshots, not a guaranteed national price, and delivery, installation, removal of an old appliance and promotions can change the final amount.
| Listing | Displayed price | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| CHOICE listing | A$2,999 | Reference price shown by the independent review source. |
| Appliances Online | A$3,149 | Retail listing captured during the comparison; confirm the live price and installation terms. |
| Harvey Norman | A$3,149 | Retail listing captured during the comparison; promotions and delivery charges may change the total. |
The standard manufacturer warranty is two years. Retailer information also notes a 10-year warranty for the AI Inverter Compressor. Read the Australian warranty document carefully: compressor-only coverage does not mean the display, ice maker, seals, shelves, electronics or labor are covered for ten years. Keep proof of purchase and record the installation date, especially because a plumbed appliance can involve both product and installation claims.

What dimensions and kitchen clearances must you plan for?
The available specifications give clearance requirements but not the cabinet’s external height, width or depth. Do not estimate those dimensions from the capacity or from photographs. Before ordering, download the current installation drawing for SRS6500BA or RS90F64D4FSA and compare it with your cabinet opening, skirting boards, overhead cupboards and delivery path.
- Top: allow at least 50 mm.
- Each side: allow at least 50 mm, including space for doors and hinge movement.
- Rear: allow at least 100 mm for ventilation and the water connection.
- Front: reserve enough depth for doors to open and bins or shelves to slide out.
- Floor: verify that the surface is level and strong enough for a fully loaded 615-litre appliance.
Ask the retailer whether delivery includes unpacking, positioning, door removal for access, water connection and old-appliance removal. These services are often separate from the advertised refrigerator price.
How should you set it up after delivery?
- Leave the refrigerator upright for the period specified in Samsung’s installation instructions after transport; the correct time depends on how it was handled.
- Position it with the 50 mm top-and-side and 100 mm rear clearances, then level the cabinet before connecting water.
- Connect the mains-water line with the approved components, open the supply slowly and inspect every joint for leaks.
- Power on, select the recommended initial temperatures and let the compartments cool before loading a full shop.
- Flush the water line and discard the first batches of water and ice as directed.
- Install SmartThings, sign in, add the refrigerator and apply firmware updates only after cooling and dispensing work normally.
- Test Power Cool, Power Freeze, the dispenser, ice production and door alarms while you are still within the retailer’s reporting window for transit damage or faults.
What problems are most likely, and how can you fix them?
The dispenser does not deliver water
Check that the mains valve is open, the line is not kinked, the filter is seated and the dispenser has been flushed. If the refrigerator was just installed, air in the line can delay flow. Stop using it and call the installer if you see a leak, hear repeated water-hammering or cannot obtain pressure after checking the connection.
Ice production is delayed
A newly connected ice maker needs time to cool and fill. Confirm that the ice function is enabled, the freezer is at its recommended temperature and the water supply is open. Discard the first ice batches after installation. Persistent failure after the initial settling period warrants a service request rather than repeated resets.
SmartThings or Bixby will not connect
Verify the phone is on a compatible Wi-Fi network, the Samsung account is signed in and the refrigerator’s software is current. Regional service availability and software versions can affect the menu you see. Cooling does not become better by repeatedly pairing the appliance, so finish the physical installation and temperature check first.
The display is offline
Reconnect the refrigerator to Wi-Fi through its network settings and check whether your router has changed its password or security mode. If the screen is responsive but cloud services are unavailable, connected monitoring and voice commands may be temporarily unavailable even though local refrigerator controls remain accessible.

- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Water tastes unusual after a filter change
Flush the line for the volume specified in the supplied instructions and make sure the filter is fully locked into place. No compatible replacement-filter SKU is established here, so use the model’s manual or Samsung’s Australian support channel to identify the correct part instead of buying a filter based only on appearance.
Who should buy the Samsung SRS6500BA?
- Large households: 615 L gives substantial combined chilled and frozen storage.
- SmartThings users: the screen and connectivity are more useful when other compatible devices and routines are already in your home.
- Plumbed kitchens: the dispenser and ice maker justify the water connection if you use them every day.
- Shoppers comparing live deals: the A$2,999–A$3,149 listings show why checking current pricing matters.
Who should choose something else?
- Unplumbed kitchens: the dispenser requires mains water, so installation is not a simple plug-in exercise.
- Wide-container users: a French-door refrigerator may suit large platters and pizza boxes better.
- Minimalists: a conventional refrigerator avoids the screen, account and Wi-Fi setup.
- Buyers needing proven noise or reliability figures: the public test summary does not publish CHOICE’s detailed scores.
What is the final verdict?
The SRS6500BA is a large, feature-rich refrigerator rather than a must-have smart-home product. Its strongest case is the combination of 615 L capacity, plumbed water and ice, and genuinely useful remote and on-door controls. Its weaknesses are the installation commitment, the uncertain premium over a non-smart equivalent, and the absence of publicly visible numerical test scores. At a competitive Australian price, it is a sensible choice for a household that will use the dispenser and SmartThings features; otherwise, spend less on a simpler model or choose a layout that better fits your cookware.

What happens to the SRS6500BA if the Wi-Fi connection goes down?
The available specifications describe Wi-Fi as supporting SmartThings, Bixby and energy-monitoring functions; they do not state that basic cooling requires an internet connection. Expect remote monitoring and voice commands to be unavailable until the network returns, and use the refrigerator’s local controls in the meantime.
Why do listings show two different freezer capacities?
One source reports 213 L of claimed freezer space, while another reports 218 L usable volume. Those terms come from different measurement conventions, so the practical comparison is approximately 213–218 L rather than a precise contradiction.
Which replacement water filter should I order?
A compatible replacement SKU is not established in the available product information. Identify the exact SRS6500BA or RS90F64D4FSA variant in Samsung’s Australian manual or support portal and match the part number printed for that model.
Does the 10-year compressor warranty cover the whole refrigerator?
No. Retailer information describes the 10-year term as AI Inverter Compressor coverage. The published manufacturer warranty for the refrigerator itself is two years, so read the written terms for parts, labor and exclusions.
Can I use the dispenser without connecting a water line?
No. The product is specified as a plumbed water-and-ice dispenser and requires a compatible mains-water connection. If your kitchen cannot provide one, choose a model designed with a refillable internal tank.
