The Samsung SRL459MB is a capable but discontinued bottom-mount refrigerator for Australia and New Zealand. It offers reversible-door installation, no-frost multi-flow cooling, an inverter compressor, a 4-star energy label and a practical 700mm-wide cabinet. The important catch is that its capacity is reported in conflicting gross and net conventions, while public owner feedback is based on only five reviews. It can make sense as a carefully inspected used appliance, but buyers should verify condition, parts support, electrical compliance and delivery access before paying.
This review explains what the different litre figures mean, how much space the cabinet really provides, what owners have reported, and how to decide whether a used SRL459MB is a sensible purchase.

It is a reasonable mid-size bottom-mount refrigerator when the price is low and the individual used unit checks out. The layout, reversible hinge, automatic defrost and inverter-driven cooling are useful everyday features, and the 4-star label is respectable for its generation. However, it is not a straightforward recommendation: Samsung and independent listings use different capacity conventions, the model is discontinued, and public owner feedback includes reports of shelf weakness, early seal problems and a high-pitched noise.
That combination makes the SRL459MB a condition-dependent purchase rather than a model to buy sight unseen. A clean cabinet with stable temperatures, quiet operation, intact seals and available replacement parts can still be worthwhile. A damaged or noisy example is difficult to justify because new-model warranty and parts support are easier to obtain elsewhere.

How much can the SRL459MB hold?
There is no single litre figure that can be compared without checking the label used by the source. Samsung markets the refrigerator as 427L, an Australian specification sheet lists 458L total capacity with 299L net refrigerator and 81L net freezer space, and CHOICE lists 458L total volume while showing claimed fridge and freezer volumes of 309L and 149L. Gross and net measurements are not interchangeable, so use the source-specific figures below rather than adding or subtracting them.
| Source and label | Total or compartment capacity | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung marketing sheet | 427L | Headline model capacity; the sheet does not present it in the same gross/net format as the other figures. |
| Australian specification sheet | 458L total; 299L net refrigerator; 81L net freezer | Net figures represent usable internal volume after fittings and insulation are accounted for. |
| CHOICE listing | 458L total; claimed 309L fridge; claimed 149L freezer | Independent listing with a different compartment convention from the specification sheet. |
For meal planning, the net numbers are the more useful starting point, but even those should be treated as source-specific claims. Shelves, drawers, door pockets, ice-maker hardware and the shape of the compartments affect how much food fits in practice. A household that routinely freezes large boxes may find the freezer restrictive despite the larger headline total.
What are the SRL459MB’s dimensions and installation requirements?
The cabinet is 700mm wide, 1700mm high and 705mm deep. The specification sheet gives 600mm depth without the door and a net weight of 83kg. Those measurements describe the appliance, not the complete installation envelope: the door needs swing room, the hinge side needs access for reversal, ventilation must remain unobstructed, and the route from delivery vehicle to kitchen must accommodate an 83kg cabinet.
- Cabinet: 700mm W × 1700mm H × 705mm D.
- Depth without door: 600mm, useful when checking a doorway or hallway.
- Weight: 83kg net before packaging.
- Door planning: allow the opening arc and handle clearance on the chosen hinge side.
- Ventilation: follow the clearance guidance supplied with the individual unit; do not press the cabinet tightly against walls or cabinetry.
Measure the narrowest point of every access route, including apartment lifts and turns. A 700mm cabinet can fail to enter through a doorway even when the kitchen opening is wide enough. If the door must be removed for delivery, confirm that the seller or technician can refit it and preserve the seal.
Which cooling and storage features does it include?
The feature set is typical of a well-equipped bottom-mount refrigerator from its market period, with automatic defrost and separate controls intended to keep frequently accessed food at eye level.
All Around Cooling and multi-flow air
Samsung describes cold air being blown through multiple vents on every shelf to create multi-directional airflow and maintain a constant temperature. In practical terms, the vents are designed to reduce warm spots between shelves; they do not eliminate the need to avoid blocking vents with containers.

Digital Inverter Technology
The digital inverter compressor varies its speed according to cooling demand instead of operating only at a fixed speed. That can support steadier temperatures and lower cycling stress, but the presence of an inverter does not guarantee silence or a particular electricity bill in every kitchen.
Power Freeze
Power Freeze provides a temporary faster-freezing mode for newly added food. Use it as a short-term boost rather than a permanent setting, and allow for the additional energy use that any intensive cooling cycle requires.
Interior equipment
- Four tempered-glass shelves.
- One crisper drawer.
- Five door pockets.
- Interior LED lighting.
- Deodoriser.
- Twist ice maker.
- Reversible door.
- No-frost operation with multi-flow cooling.
Tempered glass is easier to wipe than wire shelving, but owners should still check each shelf for chips, cracks or excessive flexing. The twist ice maker saves space compared with a large automatic dispenser, though it requires manual filling and harvesting.
How should the conflicting capacity figures affect a buying decision?
Use the model’s physical layout and net compartment space, not the largest number in an advertisement, when comparing it with another refrigerator. A competing model may publish a gross total while the SRL459MB listing you found uses net litres, making an apparently smaller refrigerator look larger on paper.
- Record whether each candidate quotes gross, total, usable or net capacity.
- Compare refrigerator and freezer compartments separately.
- Check shelf spacing and drawer dimensions for the food you actually store.
- Ask the seller to confirm the model label and specification sheet rather than relying on a copied marketplace description.
The reported 299L net refrigerator and 81L net freezer figures from the Australian specification sheet indicate a fridge-focused layout. CHOICE’s separate 309L and 149L claimed compartment figures cannot be treated as a direct correction because the measurement convention is different.
How efficient is the SRL459MB?
The refrigerator carries a 4-star energy rating. CHOICE records claimed energy use of 330kWh per year in its 2021 listing. That is a claimed annual figure under the applicable test and label conditions, not a guarantee of household consumption; ambient temperature, door openings, thermostat settings, ventilation and age all affect actual use.

For a fair comparison with a current model, compare both the star rating and annual kilowatt-hours. A newer refrigerator with a similar capacity may use less electricity even if its star count looks similar, while a heavily worn used unit can consume more than its original label suggests. Ask for a photograph of the energy label on the exact appliance if it is still attached.
What do owners say about the SRL459MB?
ProductReview.com.au shows 3.2 out of 5 from five reviews, accessed in 2026. The sample is small and self-selected, so it describes the experiences of those reviewers rather than a failure rate for every unit sold.
| Category | Visible score |
|---|---|
| Build quality | 3.6/5 |
| Value | 3.4/5 |
| Ease of use | 4.3/5 |
| Cleaning and maintenance | 4.3/5 |
| Noise level | 4.0/5 |
| Internal layout | 4.3/5 |
One owner reports weak shelves, seals failing in less than two years and a frequent high-pitched noise. Another praises the value but describes the freezer as a little small. These are individual reports, not evidence that every SRL459MB has those defects, but they identify exactly what a used buyer should test.
CHOICE identifies a 2021 test year, a listed price of $1,449 at that time, Thailand as the origin and discontinued availability. Its public page does not expose detailed temperature, noise, reliability, satisfaction or expert-rating scores; those details are member-only. It is therefore not possible to claim that this model outperforms current refrigerators on laboratory temperature stability or noise.
Can you still buy a Samsung SRL459MB?
The model is discontinued according to both CHOICE and ProductReview. A used-appliance listing described a 427L unit with a 4-star rating and the same 700 × 1700 × 705mm dimensions, but that listing was out of stock when crawled. Remaining stock is consequently likely to be used, refurbished or privately listed rather than ordinary new retail inventory.
Do not assume that a search result represents available stock. Confirm that the seller has the appliance physically present, provide the exact model label, ask for recent temperature and noise information, and establish the return or warranty terms in writing. A low sticker price can be offset by delivery, hinge conversion, replacement shelves or a service call.

What should you inspect before buying a used SRL459MB?
Inspect the appliance while it is running, not only while it is clean and switched off. The following sequence catches the problems most relevant to this model.
- Verify identity: photograph the rating plate and confirm SRL459MB, voltage information and the seller’s description match.
- Check the door seals: look for splits, flattening, gaps or sections that pull away from the cabinet. Close a sheet of paper in several places; it should resist being pulled out.
- Examine shelves and bins: inspect tempered glass edges for chips, test shelf supports for flexing, and check every door pocket and crisper for cracks.
- Listen during operation: allow the compressor to run and listen for persistent high-pitched tones, rattling, repeated clicking or excessive vibration.
- Check temperatures: verify that the refrigerator is cold throughout and that the freezer freezes solidly. If possible, use an independent thermometer rather than relying on a display setting.
- Test controls and modes: confirm the interior light, temperature controls, Power Freeze function and twist ice maker operate correctly.
- Inspect the hinge side: determine whether the current orientation suits your kitchen and whether the conversion hardware is present if reversal is needed.
- Look for service evidence: request invoices or service records, especially if the compressor or sealed system has been repaired.
- Confirm parts availability: check that shelves, bins and ice-maker components can be sourced for the exact model before handing over money.
Walk away if the seller will not permit a powered inspection, if the compressor repeatedly trips protection, or if the cabinet has severe corrosion or a door that does not sit square. Cosmetic marks are negotiable; a leaking seal or unstable temperature is a functional risk.
Does the reversible door make installation easier?
Yes, but only if the conversion is planned before delivery. The reversible hinge allows the opening direction to match a left- or right-handed kitchen, yet the job requires access to the hinge hardware and a correctly aligned seal afterward. Measure the door swing with nearby walls, islands and handles in place, not just the cabinet width.
Ask whether the unit has already been converted and whether the original hinge covers and fasteners are included. After any reversal, check that the door closes under its own seal around the full perimeter and that shelves do not collide with adjacent cabinetry. Transporting the refrigerator on its side can also require a settling period before powering it; follow the seller’s or technician’s transport guidance for the specific unit.

What warranty and parts limitations matter?
Samsung states that the digital inverter compressor warranty is limited to the compressor, with duration dependent on the purchase date and local terms. A compressor-only promise does not automatically cover shelves, door seals, drawers, controls, labour or refrigerant-system work. For a discontinued refrigerator, verify coverage in writing rather than assuming a generic Samsung warranty still applies.
Parts support is equally important. Ask for the customer code shown on the appliance and obtain a written confirmation that the required shelf, bin or ice-maker part is still orderable. If a seller cannot identify compatible parts, price the refrigerator as disposable rather than as a long-term investment.

Where was the SRL459MB sold, and what electrical checks apply?
Certification records identify Australia, Fiji and New Zealand as sales geographies. The recorded input is 230–240V, 1.5A, 200W at 50Hz. Use those figures as identification and compatibility checks, not as permission to connect the appliance to a different electrical system.
One EECA record lists an approval expiry date of 2026-08-16. Anyone importing or commercially reselling a unit should check the current regulatory status before advertising it, because an approval record and a product’s physical availability are separate questions. Household buyers should use a properly earthed outlet and have electrical work performed by a qualified professional.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHow should you compare the SRL459MB with a current refrigerator?
Compare the appliance on the dimensions that affect daily use and ownership cost, not on headline litres alone.
- Usable space: compare net refrigerator and freezer capacity using the same measurement convention.
- Fit: check cabinet width, height, depth with the door, door-swing clearance and delivery path.
- Energy: compare star rating and claimed annual kWh under the relevant regional label.
- Freezer design: assess drawer height, access to packaged food and whether the twist ice maker suits your habits.
- Installation flexibility: confirm hinge reversibility and the cost of any conversion.
- Performance evidence: seek measured noise and temperature-stability data, while recognising that public CHOICE details for this model are limited.
- Support: compare warranty scope, service availability and parts access, especially for seals and storage components.
- Total cost: include delivery, refurbishment, repairs and expected electricity use rather than comparing only the purchase price.
A current refrigerator is usually the safer choice when you need predictable warranty coverage or cannot inspect a used unit. The SRL459MB becomes more attractive when its dimensions solve a specific fit problem, the price reflects its discontinued status and a hands-on inspection finds no seal, noise or temperature concerns.
What is the final buying verdict?
Buy an SRL459MB only as a verified, condition-specific deal. Its reversible door, inverter compressor, no-frost multi-flow cooling, 4-star label and eye-level refrigerator section remain useful, but conflicting capacity figures and limited owner data make careful checking essential. For any listing, make the decision from the exact unit’s seals, temperatures, noise, shelves, hinge hardware, service history and parts prospects—not from the 427L headline alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
What model code should I give a parts supplier for an SRL459MB?
Quote the full model and customer code from the rating plate, including the suffix RL40B4SBASL/SA when it appears on your unit. Suppliers use that code to distinguish shelves, bins and ice-maker parts that may look similar across Samsung refrigerators.
Can the SRL459MB run on a standard New Zealand or Australian household outlet?
Its certification record is for 230–240V, 50Hz systems used in Australia and New Zealand, with a recorded 1.5A, 200W input. Have the outlet and earthing checked by a qualified electrician if the plug, cord or socket condition is questionable.
How long should a used refrigerator be tested before purchase?
Arrange enough powered time for the compressor to cycle and the compartments to become cold, rather than accepting a demonstration immediately after switch-on. A thermometer reading and a second visit are more informative than a seller’s assurance that the light works.
Is a 4-star label enough to estimate my electricity bill?
No. The 330kWh/year figure is a claimed CHOICE 2021 value under test conditions. Household temperature, ventilation, door openings, thermostat settings and the aging condition of a used compressor can all change actual consumption.
