The Samsung SRL455DLS is a 455-litre Barossa bottom-mount refrigerator that is best treated as a used-market or repair decision, not a current model to buy sight unseen. Its headline capacity is 455L gross (306L refrigerator and 149L freezer), while a retailer lists 378L net (297L and 81L). It has a non-plumbed water dispenser, frost-free cooling, a four-star energy label and a claimed 330kWh/year figure from a 2015 CHOICE listing. How much usable space does the 455L rating provide?
The 455L figure is gross capacity. A retailer reports 378L net capacity, which is the more useful number when comparing how much food can actually be stored after shelves, drawers, insulation and other internal structures take up space.

The 77L difference between gross and net total is not a fault; it reflects the space occupied by interior fittings and the fact that capacity standards are reported differently. Compare gross with gross or net with net across competing refrigerators, and keep the same standard for both the fridge and freezer figures.
Is the freezer large enough?
On the retailer’s net figures, the freezer provides 81L of usable space, despite its 149L gross rating. That is a meaningful distinction for households that bulk-buy frozen food: the appliance’s overall 455L headline does not mean 149L of open, usable freezer volume. Check the actual drawer layout and measure the space if you regularly store large boxes, trays or containers.

The specification sheet gives a width of 700mm, a height of 1,700mm including the hinge and a depth of 600mm without the door. A retailer lists 747mm depth with the handle, and a gross weight of 91kg.

The two depth figures explain why a refrigerator can appear to fit on paper but project much farther into a kitchen once the door and handle are included. Before paying, measure the complete route from delivery point to final position: doorway width, hallway turns, lift or stair access and the refrigerator recess. Ask the seller whether the door, handle or drawers have been removed for transport; do not assume the 600mm cabinet figure is the clearance you need.
Installation checks that prevent surprises
- Measure the recess width at the floor, bench height and hinge height; walls and skirting can make these measurements different.
- Use the 1,700mm hinge-inclusive height when checking overhead clearance.
- Use 747mm as the starting point for front-to-back planning where the retailer’s handle measurement applies, then add the space needed to open the door and pull out drawers.
- Confirm that the floor can support a 91kg appliance plus its contents and that the route is safe for moving it.

The SRL455DLS carries a four-star energy rating and a claimed consumption of 330kWh per year. To estimate running cost, multiply 330kWh by your electricity tariff, then compare that result with the measured or stated consumption of a replacement appliance. Keep the year and test context with the number: quoting 330kWh/year without the 2015 CHOICE qualification makes an old figure sound like a current laboratory result. A faulty seal or compressor can also make an individual refrigerator use more power than its original label suggests.
Which features does the SRL455DLS include?
Published equipment is generous for a mid-2010s refrigerator, but features should be judged by operation and condition on the individual unit you are considering.

How should you interpret the mixed rating?
- Look for repeated symptoms across several reviews, then test those components on the actual refrigerator.
- Separate a product fault from a retailer, delivery or service experience; the owner rating combines all of those experiences.
- Give more weight to evidence you can verify, such as temperature stability, seal contact, compressor cycling and dispenser operation.
- Treat the discontinued status as a support risk: a repair may be possible, but availability and price of a particular part are not assured.
Is a used Samsung SRL455DLS worth buying?

If the seller will not allow these checks, value the appliance as a repair project rather than as a working refrigerator. A low purchase price does not compensate for transport, diagnosis, refrigerant work or a replacement compressor.

What price and availability should you expect?
The only stated new price is the February 2015 A$1,599 RRP. It should not be used as a direct guide to a 2026 second-hand price. Used value depends on age, cosmetic condition, verified cooling, included shelves and drawers, transport difficulty and whether the seller provides any return period.
Because the model is discontinued, live stock cannot be assumed from an old product page. Ask whether a listing is used, refurbished, display stock or unopened old stock; those categories carry different risks. Its strongest case is a sound, fairly priced unit for a household that wants a top refrigerator, bottom freezer, frost-free operation and a refillable dispenser without plumbing.
Pass on it if you cannot test the compressor and compartments, if the freezer capacity is too small in net terms, if the handle-inclusive depth will obstruct your kitchen, or if you need dependable long-term manufacturer support. The four-star label and 2015 energy figure are useful reference points, but they do not overcome unknown condition.
