The Samsung SR520BLSTC is a roomy top-mount refrigerator with unusually flexible freezer conversion, but it is a discontinued model. Samsung’s specification sheet lists 498 L of usable storage, five Smart Convertible Freezer modes, separate fridge and freezer cooling, and claimed energy use of 360 kWh per year. CHOICE’s 2018 record lists 525 L total volume, a four-star energy rating and dimensions close to 170 cm high by 73 cm wide by 81 cm deep. Those figures make it attractive as a used or remaining-stock appliance, but availability, parts and warranty support need checking in your country before you buy.

For a new purchase, a current model with similar capacity may be the safer ownership choice because its warranty and replacement parts are easier to verify. For a discounted, leftover or second-hand SR520BLSTC, inspect the appliance carefully and confirm service support before paying.

The 82 kg listed weight matters when moving the unit over stairs or uneven flooring. Measure the narrowest doorway, hallway turn and lift opening, not just the final refrigerator recess. Also check whether the door can open far enough to remove shelves and drawers; a cabinet that fits the opening can still be unusable if a wall blocks the hinge side.
The finish is described as black layered steel. There is no built-in water dispenser, and the refrigerator does not require plumbing. That simplifies installation and avoids dedicating cabinet space to a water filter, but it also means chilled water must come from a separate container or appliance.
Can the SR520BLSTC freezer be converted to a fridge?
Yes. Samsung’s Smart Convertible Freezer provides up to five modes, allowing the freezer compartment to operate as additional refrigerator space. Samsung’s specification sheet summarizes the feature as converting the freezer to a fridge “with the touch of a few buttons.”
Conversion is useful when a household needs extra fresh-food capacity for a party, bulk produce or drinks but does not regularly keep a large amount of frozen food. How to use the conversion feature sensibly
- Decide whether the immediate shortage is refrigerator or freezer space before changing modes.
- Move food that requires a different temperature to another safe compartment or appliance while the change is taking effect.
- Select the desired Smart Convertible mode using the refrigerator’s control panel; the exact button labels should be confirmed in the local manual.
- Allow the compartment to stabilize before loading it fully. Avoid judging performance while warm food and open doors are adding heat.
- When switching back to freezer operation, do not assume food is frozen simply because the display has changed; verify that the compartment has returned to its intended temperature.

How do Twin Cooling Plus and the pantry work?
Twin Cooling Plus uses separate cooling systems for the refrigerator and freezer compartments. Samsung says this arrangement is intended to improve temperature control and minimize odor mixing, because air from the freezer is not simply circulated through the fresh-food section.
Separate systems can be valuable when the freezer contains strongly scented foods or when humidity control affects produce quality. They do not eliminate the need to cover food, clean spills promptly or keep doors closed. The public material does not provide an independent laboratory score proving how much the system improves freshness or odor transfer.
The Slide & Reach Pantry is a lower-temperature drawer. Samsung describes it as a convenient place for meat or fish, rather than as a substitute for a dedicated freezer. Use the temperature guidance in the local manual and keep raw food sealed so that drips cannot contaminate other shelves.
Storage hardware and everyday convenience

The claimed energy consumption is 360 kWh per year, and CHOICE’s 2018 listing gives the refrigerator a four-star energy rating. The 360 kWh figure is a labeled or claimed annual value, not a guarantee for every home. Room temperature, door openings, food load, settings, seals and whether the freezer is converted all affect actual consumption.
To estimate an electricity cost, multiply 360 kWh by your retailer’s electricity rate. For example, at a rate of 0.30 in your local currency per kWh, the labeled annual energy component would be 108 currency units; your bill can be higher or lower because the label is a standardized estimate and tariffs differ. Use the appliance’s local energy label and your utility rate for a market-specific calculation.

The Digital Inverter compressor is designed to vary its operation rather than run only at a fixed speed. That can reduce cycling noise and energy waste in some conditions, but the supplied material does not include an independent measured consumption or noise result. CHOICE lists those test fields, yet its public page does not expose the scores.

The manual ice maker is a practical compromise. It avoids plumbing and can be removed when you need the full freezer footprint, but it requires filling by hand and does not provide the speed or convenience of an automatic dispenser. Check that the twist mechanism, tray and mounting points are present on a used unit.
What do the warranty and service details mean?
CHOICE’s listing records a two-year warranty, while Samsung’s specification sheet states “10 YEAR Parts Warranty on the Digital Inverter Motor.” These are not interchangeable promises. The motor statement concerns parts coverage and may have exclusions, registration requirements or labor limits; the two-year figure may describe the general appliance warranty in the market reviewed by CHOICE.
Before purchase, read the warranty card for your country and confirm whether the serial number remains eligible. Ask who pays labor, transport and diagnosis, whether the warranty transfers to a second owner, and whether discontinued-model parts are still stocked. Do not assume that a 10-year motor-parts statement means ten years of complete refrigerator coverage.
Is the Samsung SR520BLSTC discontinued?
CHOICE, Andoo and ProductReview report the SR520BLSTC as discontinued or no longer available. That status can differ by country and by retailer: a unit may be old remaining stock, a refurbished appliance or a used example even when a product page remains online.
Discontinuation does not make the refrigerator unusable, but it changes the buying decision. Samsung SR520BLSTC verdict
The Samsung SR520BLSTC remains technically appealing: 498 L of Samsung-listed usable space, a 138 L freezer that can be converted through up to five modes, Twin Cooling Plus, a lower-temperature pantry and a claimed 360 kWh-per-year energy figure. Its four-star CHOICE rating and conventional, non-plumbed design add practical appeal.
However, the model’s reported discontinuation is decisive for many buyers. Treat the refrigerator as a condition-and-support purchase, not simply a capacity bargain. Verify dimensions, warranty terms, serviceability and cooling operation in your market; if those checks fail, a current top-mount model is the lower-risk choice.
