Choose the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra if your priority is the larger screen and Samsung’s announced high-resolution camera and battery specifications. Choose iPhone Duo if you want Apple’s first foldable iPhone and its announced camera features, especially within Apple’s ecosystem. Neither is a proven overall winner: Apple’s announced October 23, 2026 release date is still ahead as of October 7, 2026, and the available independent head-to-head compares Duo with the regular Galaxy Z Fold8—not the Fold8 Ultra.
At a glance: the Ultra and Duo are not equally tested
The confirmed specifications make the Fold8 Ultra look like the larger-workspace option: Samsung lists an 8-inch main display, compared with Apple’s announced 7.6-inch inner display on iPhone Duo. Their announced rear-camera systems also differ in resolution: Samsung lists a 200 MP main camera and 50 MP ultra-wide, while Apple lists two 48 MP Fusion cameras. Those numbers describe hardware, not image quality; resolution alone cannot establish which phone takes better photos.

Samsung announced the expanded Galaxy Z family on July 22, 2026, and says the new series began selling in select markets on August 7, with global expansion. Apple announced Duo on September 9, 2026. For Duo, October 23, 2026 is the release date reported by Tom’s Guide; on October 7, availability is still upcoming. Check local stock, configurations, and pricing before buying.
Which phone better suits your priorities?
Choose Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra for a larger working canvas
Samsung positions the Ultra as a foldable for productivity and content creation. Its 8-inch main display is the largest confirmed inner screen in this comparison, and Samsung says multitasking is easier on that large display. If you often work with documents, read side by side, or want extra room for media and games, that screen size is a concrete advantage to consider. Actual app layouts and multitasking behavior still depend on software; Samsung’s descriptions of Galaxy AI and partner Gemini Intelligence experiences are company claims, not independent test results.

Choose iPhone Duo for Apple’s foldable design and announced camera features
Apple describes Duo as its first foldable iPhone, with a 7.6-inch inner display and 5.4-inch outer display. Its announcement also names a 48 MP Fusion Main camera, a 48 MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera, a Center Stage front camera, and an under-display FaceTime camera. Apple’s Duo Preview and Dual Capture are announced camera features; they have not been independently evaluated here. Duo is the more natural candidate if you specifically want Apple’s foldable and prefer to remain in Apple’s ecosystem.
Decide how much you value size versus portability
Samsung gives the Fold8 Ultra’s weight as 215 g and its unfolded thickness as 4.1 mm. These are useful Ultra-specific figures, but they do not settle which phone is easier to carry: a fair comparison needs matching Duo measurements, including folded dimensions. The independent comparison’s Duo weight and unfolded thickness are presented against the regular Fold8, not the Ultra. Do not treat that regular-model comparison as an Ultra-versus-Duo portability verdict.

What the independent comparison does—and does not—tell you
Tom’s Guide compares iPhone Duo with the regular Galaxy Z Fold8. Its planned U.S. starting prices are $1,999 for a 256 GB Duo and $1,899 for a 256 GB regular Fold8. These are the comparison’s reported planned prices for those specific models and storage tiers—not an Ultra-versus-Duo price comparison. Samsung’s cited Ultra launch release does not establish a comparable local retail price, so confirm current prices in your market.
The same comparison reports a 12-hour-19-minute web-surfing-over-5G battery result from Tom’s Guide’s separate test of the regular Fold8. That is not a test of the Fold8 Ultra or iPhone Duo, and it cannot show which title device lasts longer. The Ultra’s 5,000 mAh capacity is not a substitute for comparable battery-life tests.

- SLIM, CLEAR PROTECTION WITH MAGNETIC FIT: The Clear Magnet Case keeps the original design of your Galaxy Z Fold8 visible, while adding a layer of everyday protection. The smooth edges and slim profile make it comfortable to hold and easy to slip in and out of your pocket.
- EASY CHARGING. CLEARLY PROTECTED: Built-in magnets help align your Galaxy Z Fold8 for fast wireless charging.¹ Just snap it on your Galaxy Z Fold8 and seamlessly attach and detach a range of compatible magnetic accessories.²
Tom’s Guide also reports IP68 for Duo versus IP48 for the regular Fold8, more simultaneous windows on the regular Fold8 than Duo’s two split-view windows, and Apple Pencil support on Duo. These are comparisons with the regular Fold8, not verified Ultra-versus-Duo results. Samsung’s cited Ultra announcement does not establish an Ultra water- or dust-resistance rating or a comparable window count. Confirm an exact compatible Apple Pencil model before buying an accessory.
How to make the buying decision
- Start with your operating-system preference. If Apple’s ecosystem is the deciding factor, Duo is the candidate to investigate; if you prefer Samsung’s software and services, consider the Fold8 Ultra.
- Match the screen to your routine. Compare the confirmed 8-inch Ultra main display and Duo’s 7.6-inch inner and 5.4-inch outer displays with the apps, reading, and media you actually use.
- Check real carry measurements. Look up folded size, folded thickness, and weight for both models in your market. The published Ultra figures here include weight and unfolded thickness, but not a complete matched set of Duo measurements.
- Compare cameras by use, not megapixels alone. Consider your usual subjects, zoom needs, front-camera use, and video features; the announced resolutions do not establish which camera system performs better.
- Verify local price, availability, and durability terms. Duo’s reported release date is after October 7, 2026, and regional pricing and stock can differ. Check device-specific ratings, warranty, and repair terms rather than applying the regular Fold8’s reported rating to the Ultra.
Verdict
The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is the stronger specification-led choice for a reader who values a larger inner screen and wants Samsung’s announced 200 MP main camera, 50 MP ultra-wide camera, 5,000 mAh battery, and 45 W charging. iPhone Duo is the better fit for someone seeking Apple’s first foldable iPhone and its announced camera and display features. Because Duo’s release is still upcoming on October 7, 2026, and no cited independent test directly compares it with the Fold8 Ultra, treat this as a needs-based choice—not a tested performance ranking.
