Ask an employee which checkout is operating and whether they can help: “Is there a staffed register open, or can someone help me check out?” If no employee is nearby, try the service desk or ask for the manager on duty. Don’t assume an unattended register is available for customer use; confirm what the store permits before scanning or paying.
What to do first
- Look for an open staffed lane. Check the checkout area, then ask an employee nearby which register or checkout service is operating.
- Ask for help if you can’t find an employee. Go to the service desk or request the manager on duty. Ask whether an employee can open a register or assist you at another checkout.
- Confirm the store’s checkout instructions. A store may offer self-checkout, a hosted checkout, or mobile scan-and-go, but availability and requirements vary. Don’t use an unattended register unless staff confirm it is open for customers.
What alternatives might be available?
Checkout options are retailer- and location-specific. For example, Walmart says Customer Hosts can direct shoppers to available registers and help with checkout; Walmart+ members may also use Scan & Go. These are Walmart examples, not options guaranteed at every store. Ask staff whether an alternative is open now, whether assistance is available, and whether an app, account, or membership is required. Walmart: “Do I have to use self-checkout?”

If you can’t use the available checkout
If a disability prevents you from using the option that is open, explain the barrier and ask for an accessible staffed checkout or an equivalent checkout arrangement. In the United States, the U.S. Department of Justice’s ADA Title III regulation, 28 CFR § 36.302(d), says stores with checkout aisles must keep an adequate number of accessible checkout aisles open during store hours or modify their policies and practices to provide an equivalent level of convenient service to customers with disabilities. Read 28 CFR § 36.302(d).
The DOJ’s retail accessibility checklist advises stores to “Staff the accessible sales counters and check-out aisles during all business hours.” That is agency checklist guidance; the regulation sets the legal standard. DOJ retail accessibility checklist and Title III manual

A separate DOJ settlement illustrates a company-specific commitment: Stop & Shop agreed to keep at least one staffed and self-service accessible checkout aisle open during store hours at its stores. That settlement term applies to that agreement; it is not a rule that automatically applies to every retailer. DOJ–Stop & Shop settlement
The accessibility rule described here is U.S.-specific. In another country, consult that country’s official consumer and accessibility guidance. These sources do not establish that every customer is entitled to a staffed cashier, that every store must accept cash, or that a particular remedy applies in every situation.
