To update a Samsung Galaxy, check eligibility and availability on the device, then use Settings > Software update (or System updates) > Download and install, or update with Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac. One UI beta enrollment is separate: it requires Samsung Members, a Samsung Account, and an eligible device in a participating country. Back up before installing beta software, attempting recovery, or resetting. You can roll back an installed beta through Samsung Members and Smart Switch PC, but Samsung says a device updated to the latest stable firmware cannot be downgraded to an earlier version.
Is my Samsung Galaxy eligible for an update?
Eligibility depends on what kind of update you mean. Stable software updates and One UI beta participation do not have identical rules, and availability can vary by device, software version, carrier, and country. Check the options shown for your own Galaxy rather than assuming that another model or region will have the same update.

Open Settings and look for Software update or System updates. The labels and screens can vary by model, software version, and wireless provider. If the device offers Download and install, follow the on-screen instructions. If no update appears, that screen does not establish that every Galaxy model is unsupported: availability and timing can differ across devices and providers.
For the One UI Beta Program
Samsung limits beta participation to specific devices, operating-system versions, and countries. Compatible devices and program periods vary by country, so a beta listed for one model or market should not be treated as broadly available. Samsung Members displays the Beta Program option when applicable; registering also requires a Samsung Account.

How do I check for and install a Galaxy update?
For most users, checking the phone’s update screen is the routine route. If a newer version is available, the phone offers the option to download and install it.
- Connect the phone to a reliable power source or check that it has sufficient charge.
- Open Settings, then tap Software update or System updates. The label depends on the device and software version.
- Tap Download and install, then follow the instructions displayed by the phone.
- Let the installation finish. Samsung advises keeping the battery at least 20% charged, not disconnecting the USB cable if one is connected, and not using the device during installation. The phone may restart more than once.
Samsung also supports updating through Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac. Connect the Galaxy to the computer with a USB cable, open Smart Switch, and check whether it offers Update. Smart Switch presents that option when it detects a newer version for the connected device. If it does not offer an update, the software available to that device is not being offered through that route at that time.
What is the difference between a stable update, Smart Switch, and a beta?
A stable update is the normal software release delivered through the phone’s update screen or Smart Switch. The beta is an opt-in pre-release program with additional eligibility limits and a documented rollback process.

| Stable update on the phone | Availability varies by model, software version, carrier, and country. | Settings > Software update or System updates > Download and install. | Back up important data before recovery or reset. Samsung’s specific beta data-loss warning concerns beta software. | Samsung says a device on the latest stable software cannot be downgraded to earlier firmware under its enhanced security policies. |
| Stable update through Smart Switch | Smart Switch offers an update if it detects a newer version for the connected device. | Connect the Galaxy by USB to a Windows PC or Mac and select Update if offered. | Back up before recovery or reset; a recovery process can include a factory data reset. | Smart Switch also provides documented emergency recovery options when an update fails. |
| One UI beta | Limited to specified devices, OS versions, countries, and program periods; registration requires Samsung Members and a Samsung Account. | Enroll in Samsung Members, then install through the phone’s update settings or the participated-beta detail page. | Samsung warns beta behavior can cause data loss and recommends a Smart Switch PC backup before installation. | Withdraw through Samsung Members, then use Smart Switch PC’s Downgrade function. Rollback resets the device and removes data generated during beta testing. |
The important distinction is that beta rollback is a specific procedure Samsung documents for beta participants. It is not a general method for reverting a stable firmware update.
Should I back up before installing a One UI beta?
Yes. Samsung warns that unexpected beta behavior can cause data loss and highly recommends backing up to a computer with Smart Switch PC before installing beta software. Make and verify the backup before enrolling or installing, so you are not relying on a backup created after the phone has begun running beta software.
Make a computer backup
- Install or open Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac.
- Connect the Galaxy to the computer with a USB cable that supports data transfer.
- Follow Smart Switch’s prompts to make a backup.
- Check that Smart Switch reports the backup as complete before proceeding with beta installation, recovery, or a reset.
A cable that only charges the phone will not serve the computer-backup task; use one that supports data transfer. A backup is particularly important before rollback because beta rollback resets the phone. Samsung’s recovery guidance also recommends making backup copies before a factory data reset and says Samsung is not responsible for loss of data stored on the device.

How do I join the One UI Beta Program?
Use Samsung Members to register, then install the beta through the phone if your device qualifies and the update becomes available. Enrollment is voluntary, and submitting a request does not mean that every device, country, or registration period is eligible.
- Install or open Samsung Members and sign in with a Samsung Account.
- Open the Beta Program area from the home banner or Beta card.
- Submit the registration or participation request and review the displayed program information.
- If the device meets the criteria and the beta is available to it, open Settings > Software update > Download and install, or use the participated-beta detail page, to install.
Beta software can contain bugs, errors, inaccuracies, incomplete features, or unexpected behavior. Samsung describes participation as voluntary and use as being at the participant’s risk. Beta updates roll out gradually, and Samsung does not promise an advance release date; registering does not establish when an update will appear on a particular phone.
Can I go back to stable after installing a beta?
Samsung documents a beta rollback path: withdraw from the program in Samsung Members, then connect the phone to Smart Switch on a PC and select Downgrade. This process resets the device and removes data generated while testing the beta.

- Before withdrawing, make a Smart Switch PC backup if you need to preserve data that can be backed up.
- In Samsung Members, open the beta settings and withdraw from the Beta Program.
- Connect the Galaxy to a Windows PC with a USB cable and launch Smart Switch PC.
- Select Downgrade and follow the prompts. Expect the rollback to reset the phone.
- After rollback, restore the earlier Smart Switch backup if you made one.
Samsung says a participant who registered but has not installed the beta can withdraw and continue using the official version; that situation does not require rolling back software that was never installed. If you need assistance with the rollback itself, Samsung directs users to a service center.

Can I downgrade a normal Samsung Galaxy update?
Samsung’s support guide states that once a device has been updated to the latest software version, it cannot be downgraded to an earlier firmware version because of enhanced security policies. This stable-firmware restriction is different from the beta rollback workflow, which Samsung documents separately for beta participants. The support guide was updated September 3, 2026.
Do not treat a factory reset as a firmware downgrade: Samsung’s documented recovery guidance warns that a reset can erase device data, while its stable-update guidance does not present a reset as a way to return to older firmware. Back up before any recovery or reset operation.

What should I do if an update fails?
If an update fails because the phone or computer encountered an error, Samsung US documents Smart Switch Emergency Software Recovery and Reset. The process can include a factory data reset, so first make backup copies of important data whenever the device remains accessible.
- Keep the phone connected as instructed during an update; Samsung advises not disconnecting a USB cable during installation.
- If the normal update cannot complete and Smart Switch reports an error, use its Emergency Software Recovery and Reset guidance rather than assuming the phone can be downgraded.
- Plan for possible data loss if recovery requires a factory reset. Restore from a backup afterward if one is available.
- If beta rollback assistance is needed, Samsung’s stated support route is a service center.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I join the One UI Beta Program if the Beta card is missing in Samsung Members?
The program is limited to specific devices, software versions, countries, and participation periods. If no Beta Program option appears, Samsung’s published eligibility criteria do not support assuming that registration is open for that phone or region.

Do I have to install the beta after registering?
No. Samsung describes participation as voluntary. If you registered but have not installed the beta, Samsung says you can withdraw in Samsung Members and continue using the official version.
Will a factory reset restore the previous Galaxy firmware?
Samsung’s recovery guidance describes factory reset as a data-erasing recovery action, not as a firmware downgrade. Its stable-firmware guidance separately says that a device updated to the latest software cannot be downgraded to an earlier version.
What happens if Smart Switch does not show an Update button?
Samsung says Smart Switch presents Update when it detects a newer version for the connected device. If the button is absent, the program is not offering a newer version through that connection at that time; availability can vary by device and provider.
