Verdict: The Ryobi RLT36X26BL is a sensible medium-yard cordless line trimmer when you value a supplied 36 V battery and charger, two speed settings, and a choice of 355 mm or 406 mm cutting width. Its compromises are equally clear: the ready-to-use tool is heavy, the publicly listed charge time is 100 minutes, the correct 2.4 mm line is important, and no public independent performance score is available. It is designed for ground-level grass and weeds, not hedge or bush work.
Is the Ryobi RLT36X26BL worth buying?
For an Australian buyer looking after a medium-sized yard, the RLT36X26BL makes sense if you want cordless convenience without buying a battery and charger separately. The kit includes both, offers a broad 406 mm swath for faster coverage, and can be narrowed to 355 mm when you want better endurance or more control around garden edges.

It is not a light trimmer. The manual lists 3.80 kg without a battery and up to 5.30 kg with the heaviest listed battery; CHOICE’s public listing records 5.2 kg for the reviewed kit. That weight, plus the need to use the specified line and to clear jams with the battery removed, matters more in long sessions than the headline 36 V rating.
- Good fit: medium-yard grass, soft weeds, verge trimming and edging at ground level.
- Less suitable: users seeking a very light tool, instant turnaround after a flat battery, or a machine for hedges, bushes, woody stems or dense brush.
- Evidence limitation: CHOICE publishes specification and warranty fields, but its Expert Rating and detailed performance, trimming, vibration, battery-life and noise results are member-only. There is no defensible public score to quote.

| Line diameter | 2.4 mm nylon | The specified size for the trimmer and its feed system. |
| Weight | 3.80 kg bare tool; 5.30 kg with the heaviest listed battery | Expect substantially more weight once the tool is ready to work. |
| Noise | 87.9 dB(A) operator sound pressure; 100.1 dB(A) sound power | Hearing protection is required by the manual. |
| Replacement head | RAC1214 | The model-specific head named in the manual. |
| Public CHOICE listing | $319 price; 100-minute charge time; 5.2 kg; 40.5 cm cutting diameter | These are CHOICE’s publicly shown listing values accessed in 2026, not a promised current retail price or runtime. |
| Warranty shown by CHOICE | Five years for the trimmer; three years for battery and charger | Warranty terms should be checked for the purchase region and date. |
The small differences between the manual’s 5.30 kg maximum-battery figure and CHOICE’s 5.2 kg listing are normal rounding or measurement-basis differences, not evidence of a different model. Likewise, CHOICE’s 40.5 cm diameter corresponds closely to the manual’s 406 mm maximum setting.
How wide does the Ryobi RLT36X26BL cut?
You can select either a 355 mm (about 35.5 cm) or 406 mm (about 40.6 cm) cutting capacity by adjusting the guard. The wider setting removes more grass in each sweep, while the narrower setting gives you a smaller arc for edging, obstacles and tighter beds.
Recommended Free Tools
When should you use 406 mm?
Use the full 406 mm width on open lawn margins, long verges and other areas where coverage per pass matters. Keep the head level and avoid forcing the line into hard surfaces; the extra width is useful only when you can maintain a clean, controlled sweep.
When is 355 mm the better choice?
The manual explicitly notes that runtime increases on the 33 cm setting. Its wording refers to the narrower configuration, even though the technical table lists 355 mm; treat that setting as the endurance-oriented choice. It also helps when working close to posts, borders and delicate planting because less line extends beyond your intended path.
What battery does the RLT36X26BL use, and how long does it last?
The RLT36X26BL kit supplies Ryobi’s BPL3626D2 36 V battery and BCL3620S charger. CHOICE publicly lists a 100-minute charge time, but neither the public listing nor the supplied technical data gives a guaranteed number of minutes of cutting runtime. Runtime changes with line length, grass density, speed setting, cutting width, temperature and battery condition.
For the longest practical session, choose the 355 mm width, use low speed where vegetation allows, keep the line at the correct length, and avoid repeatedly dragging the head through heavy growth. The 406 mm setting and high speed can finish an area faster, but they also ask more of the battery. A 100-minute charge figure describes charging, not how long the trimmer will operate.

What does the two-speed control do?
A high/low selector sits alongside the lock-out trigger and variable-speed trigger. High speed is the aggressive setting for faster cutting; low speed gives finer control and is the logical starting point near edging, ornamental beds or lighter grass. Because the trigger is variable, you can ease off rather than running at full speed continuously.
How does the cutting head feed line?
The RLT36X26BL uses a bump-feed head with 2.4 mm nylon line. To advance line, run the head at full speed and tap the bump knob on grass; the guard’s cut-off blade then trims excess line to the working length.
For tall grass, the manual recommends cutting from the top down. Starting at the base can wrap long stems around the shaft housing and bump head, increasing drag and creating a blockage. The recommended travel direction is from right to left, which helps the rotating line carry cut material away from the operator.
- Set the guard and handles securely before fitting the battery.
- Start at low speed in light growth and raise speed only when necessary.
- For tall grass, skim the tops first, then lower the head for the remaining length.
- Keep the head moving from right to left rather than burying it in one dense clump.
- If the line becomes short, run at full speed and tap the bump knob on grass; do not strike concrete or paving.
- Stop, remove the battery and wait for the head to stop before clearing wrapped vegetation.
How do you set up and use the trimmer safely?
The tool is intended only for adults who have read and understood the instructions and warnings and can be considered responsible for their actions. It is for cutting long grass, pulpy weeds and similar vegetation at or near ground level. The manual excludes hedge and bush trimming and warns that the line can damage tree bark, wood mouldings, cladding and fence posts.

- Fit the guard, deflector and handles; do not operate with any of these parts missing.
- Inspect the head, line, guard and battery for damage or loose parts.
- Wear eye and hearing protection, heavy long trousers, boots and gloves.
- Clear stones, wire, toys and other objects from the work area.
- Keep people and animals at least 15 m away.
Starting and stopping
- Insert the charged BPL3626D2 battery until it locks.
- Hold the lock-out control, then squeeze the variable-speed trigger to start the motor.
- Select high or low speed before entering the vegetation, using the trigger to modulate cutting.
- Release the trigger to stop. The cutting element continues rotating after switch-off, so keep the head away from your legs and wait for it to stop fully.
- Remove the battery before servicing, changing the head or clearing a blockage.
Never fit a metal replacement line. The specified nylon system is part of the guard and head design; a metal element can create a more severe hazard and is expressly excluded by the manual.
Which replacement head and line fit the RLT36X26BL?
The named replacement head is RAC1214, and the required line diameter is 2.4 mm nylon. Ryobi support identifies 2.4 mm red/orange line for the relevant 36 V trimmer family and warns that the wrong diameter affects both runtime and motor performance. Check the packaging for exact model-family compatibility before ordering, because a line that physically fits a spool is not automatically the correct specification.

How much line should you load?
The manual describes loading approximately 5.2 m of line in total, with no more than 2.6 m on either side. Keep the two sides even and wind them neatly in the spool’s indicated direction; overfilling or crossing the line can prevent bump feeding.
- Remove the battery and wait for the head to stop.
- Clean grass and debris from the head.
- Use 2.4 mm nylon and measure about 5.2 m, never exceeding 2.6 m per side.
- Thread and wind the line evenly through the spool according to the head markings.
- Refit the RAC1214 head or spool components, check that the line moves freely, and let the guard blade trim it during the first run.
How heavy and noisy is it in everyday work?
The bare-tool figure of 3.80 kg understates the weight you hold while trimming. With the heaviest listed battery, the manual gives 5.30 kg; CHOICE records 5.2 kg for its reviewed kit. That is manageable for short edging jobs but can become tiring during a full medium-yard session, especially when you hold the shaft out from your body.
Use both handles, keep the shaft aligned with your body and let the harness or support arrangement sit as intended if supplied for your configuration. Do not compensate for fatigue by lifting the head into awkward positions; stop, remove the battery and take a break instead.
The manual’s measured noise values are 87.9 dB(A) at the operator’s position and 100.1 dB(A) sound power. These are technical measurements rather than a promise that every yard will sound identical, but they explain the requirement for hearing protection and consideration for nearby people.
What does the independent CHOICE listing actually prove?
CHOICE identifies the RLT36X26BL as a cordless line trimmer for a medium yard and publicly displays its price, charge time, weight, cutting diameter and warranty fields. The public page names Adrian Lini and James Thomson as testers, but does not expose the test year.
CHOICE keeps the Expert Rating and detailed results for performance, ease of use, trimming, vibration, battery life and noise behind membership access. Consequently, it is accurate to say that the product has been assessed by CHOICE, but not to assign it a score, claim a ranking or describe test outcomes that the public page does not show.

What are the common problems and how can you fix them?
The line will not feed
First remove the battery. Check that the spool contains 2.4 mm line, that each side is no longer than 2.6 m, and that the line is wound evenly rather than crossed. Refit the head, start at full speed and tap the bump knob on grass; tapping hard ground can damage the knob without advancing line.
Grass is wrapping around the head
Long grass should be cut from the top down, not attacked at the base in one pass. Work from right to left, keep the head moving and clear any wrap only after removing the battery.
The motor feels weak or runtime is poor
Verify the line diameter and length first. Ryobi states that the wrong diameter affects runtime and motor performance. Then try the 355 mm width, low speed in light growth and a fully charged battery; avoid treating the 100-minute charge figure as an operating-time guarantee.
The trimmer vibrates or cuts unevenly
Stop immediately and remove the battery. Inspect the line for unequal lengths, the head for debris and the guard for damage. An incorrectly fitted or damaged head should not be used; replace it with the specified RAC1214 assembly or follow the service instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe battery or head gets unusually hot
Release the trigger, remove the battery and allow the tool to cool. Check for wrapped vegetation, an overfilled spool or vegetation that is too dense for the selected setting. Continuing to run a restricted head can increase motor load and shorten runtime.
Who should buy the RLT36X26BL?
Choose it if your priorities are a supplied 36 V battery and charger, adjustable width, two-speed control and a conventional bump-feed system. It is particularly practical when one tool must handle open grass as well as more precise work around borders, provided you accept the ready-to-use weight.

Look elsewhere within the cordless-trimmer category if your priority is the lightest possible tool, a documented runtime in minutes, a faster charge cycle or a head designed for woody growth. Those are decision criteria to verify model by model; the RLT36X26BL’s documentation does not promise them.
Ryobi RLT36X26BL review verdict
The RLT36X26BL is a well-specified, practical cordless trimmer rather than a universal brush cutter. Its strongest ownership points are the included BPL3626D2 battery and BCL3620S charger, 355/406 mm adjustable swath, variable trigger, two speed ranges and clearly identified RAC1214 head and 2.4 mm line. Its cautions are the roughly 5.2–5.3 kg ready-to-use weight, 100-minute publicly listed charge time, strict line requirements, substantial noise and safety limits around people, property and woody vegetation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 100-minute figure the battery’s cutting runtime?
No. It is the charge time shown in CHOICE’s public listing. The available specifications do not provide a guaranteed operating-time figure, so runtime has to be treated as variable rather than converted from the charge number.
Why does the trimmer have both 355 mm and 406 mm settings?
They are two guard-defined working widths for different jobs. The smaller setting reduces the arc around obstacles and is the setting the manual associates with increased runtime; the larger setting prioritises coverage in open areas.
Does a 36 V battery tell me how long the trimmer will run?
No. Voltage describes the electrical system, not the battery’s energy capacity. Actual runtime also depends on load, speed, line length, cutting width, temperature and battery condition, none of which can be reduced to the voltage number alone.
Why might my kit weigh slightly more or less than the published figure?
The manual gives 3.80 kg bare and up to 5.30 kg with its heaviest listed battery, while CHOICE lists 5.2 kg for its reviewed kit. Battery variant, measurement method and rounding can account for that small difference.
