Yes—if you need petrol runtime and attachment flexibility for a large yard, the Ryobi RLT254SDSO is a capable configuration, but it is not a light or maintenance-free trimmer. Its 25.4cc full-crank two-stroke engine, straight shaft, harness and roughly 43–46cm cutting path are aimed at extended grass and edge work. The trade-offs are a carried weight of about 5.8–6.2kg before fuel, mandatory 50:1 fuel mixing, vibration and routine two-stroke maintenance. Published specifications also differ: power is listed as 0.75kW or 0.85kW, and cutting width as 430mm or 457mm, depending on the document and measurement convention. CHOICE lists an AUD $298 price and classifies it as a large-yard model, while current comparisons treat it as a discontinued petrol product.
What is the Ryobi RLT254SDSO designed to do?
The RLT254SDSO is a petrol, two-stroke, straight-shaft line trimmer for substantial residential properties. It uses a 25.4cc full-crank engine, a split shaft and Ryobi’s Expand-It attachment interface. That combination targets owners who need longer operating time than a small battery pack normally provides and who may want to use compatible attachments from the same system.

The useful distinction is between area and work pattern. A property with long fence lines, rough margins and infrequent trimming benefits from petrol runtime and a broad swath. A smaller, frequently maintained lawn may be faster and quieter to manage with a lighter cordless tool, even if its battery requires a recharge.
Is the RLT254SDSO any good?
It is a sensible large-yard petrol trimmer when you value endurance, a straight shaft and the option of Expand-It accessories. The configuration is practical rather than premium: the sources establish the engine, controls and head systems, but do not provide an independent laboratory performance score for cutting speed, fuel consumption or vibration. Treat it as a well-specified utility tool, not as a proven professional-duty benchmark.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The strongest objective advantages are the 25.4cc engine, harness-compatible straight shaft, split-shaft storage and two head options. The main ownership costs are physical effort, fuel preparation and maintenance. Owner feedback is mixed enough that careful setup and realistic expectations matter.

| Specification | Published value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 25.4cc full-crank, two-stroke | The displacement and engine type are consistent across the cited material. |
| Power | 0.75kW on the TTI/Ryobi product sheet; 0.85kW maximum performance in CHOICE/manual data | These are different published measurement conventions, not a verified change to the engine. |
| Cutting path | 430mm on the product sheet; 457mm in the manual and CHOICE data | Use the head and guard fitted to your machine when judging the actual swath. |
| Weight | 5.8kg in CHOICE’s table; 6.2kg net on the product sheet | Packaging, equipment configuration and whether fuel is included can affect the quoted number. Either figure makes it a substantial handheld tool. |
| Fuel | 50:1 petrol-to-two-stroke-oil mix | Accurate measuring is essential; do not run straight petrol in the two-stroke engine. |
| Fuel-tank volume | 580cm³ in the manual | This is the tank capacity stated for the RLT254SDSO manual. |
| Standard line feed | Speedwinder bump feed with 2.4mm line | Match the line diameter to the head specification. |
| Alternative head | Pro Cut 2 head supports 2.7mm line, according to the product sheet | That specification applies to the Pro Cut 2 head, not automatically to the Speedwinder head. |
| Warranty | Two-year replacement warranty | The product sheet and CHOICE data list this coverage; confirm the terms that apply in your country and purchase channel. |
| CHOICE listed price | AUD $298, accessed in 2026 | This is a dated Australian comparison price, not a guaranteed current retail price. |
What comes in the box?
The product sheet lists a complete powerhead and cutting setup rather than a bare engine. Inventory includes:
- Powerhead and upper boom
- Lower boom and string-head assembly
- Front handle
- Grass deflector
- Pro Cut II head
- Speedwinder handle/head
- Cutting line
- 76mL of two-stroke oil
- Combination wrench
- Harness
- Drive shaft
- Operator’s manual
Because the package contains two head systems, identify which head is installed before buying line. The Speedwinder specification is 2.4mm; the product sheet gives 2.7mm for the Pro Cut 2 head.
What fuel mix does the Ryobi RLT254SDSO use?
Use a 50:1 petrol-to-two-stroke-oil mixture. In practical terms, that is 20mL of the specified two-stroke oil for each litre of petrol. The supplied 76mL bottle is enough to prepare approximately 3.8 litres at that ratio, assuming the bottle is intended for this mix and is measured accurately.
Mix fuel in an approved container, not in the trimmer tank by guesswork. Label the container with the ratio and date, shake it gently to blend the oil, and pour only enough to complete the job. The manual specifies a 580cm³ tank; do not overfill it. Fuel preparation, storage and disposal are part of owning this machine, unlike a battery trimmer.

Never substitute straight petrol, an unmeasured oil pour or an arbitrary ratio. An incorrect mixture can cause starting problems, poor running or engine damage. Follow the fuel-quality and storage instructions in the operator’s manual for your market, because the available data establishes the ratio but does not establish a universal fuel grade or shelf life.
How do you install the shaft, guard, harness and head?
Use the supplied manual for the exact fastener sequence; the safe setup priorities are consistent even when packaging differs.
- Join the split shaft. Fit the lower boom to the upper boom as described in the manual and confirm the drive connection is fully engaged before tightening the coupling.
- Attach the front handle. Position it so both hands can control the shaft without forcing your wrists into an awkward angle.
- Install the grass deflector. Work only with the specified guard fitted. It controls the discharge area and helps keep the line within its intended cutting envelope.
- Fit the chosen head. Use the head supplied for the job and install the matching line diameter. Do not assume that line approved for one head is approved for the other.
- Attach and adjust the harness. Set the harness so the trimmer hangs with the head close to the ground while your arms remain relaxed. Re-adjust after adding fuel because balance changes as the tank empties.
- Inspect before starting. Check that the head, guard, handle and shaft coupling are secure, then look for loose fasteners, damaged line or debris wrapped around the head.
How does the Speedwinder head load and feed line?
The Speedwinder system is intended to simplify line loading, while its bump-feed action releases more line when the head is tapped against the ground during operation. Use 2.4mm nylon line with the Speedwinder specification.
- Stop the engine completely and disconnect the ignition source as directed by the manual before touching the head.
- Remove or open the Speedwinder components using the supplied instructions; do not force the spool or knob.
- Measure and wind the specified 2.4mm line evenly, keeping the turns tight and orderly so they cannot cross and jam.
- Thread the line through the outlet openings, reassemble the head and check that both ends extend evenly.
- Start at low throttle and test the bump-feed action in a clear area. If the line will not advance, stop and inspect for crossed line, incorrect diameter or a damaged knob.
The product sheet also lists a Pro Cut 2 head that supports 2.7mm line. That is a separate configuration: fit 2.7mm only when the Pro Cut 2 head is installed and its instructions allow it.
How does it perform in a large yard?
Petrol power removes the battery-runtime limit that can interrupt long fence lines or overgrown edges. The straight shaft gives useful reach under shrubs and along borders, while the harness transfers some of the tool’s load away from your forearms. The split shaft is also convenient for storage and enables compatible Expand-It attachments.
Those are configuration benefits, not independent test results. The available sources do not establish a controlled cutting-speed, fuel-use or runtime figure, so no honest review can promise a particular area per tank. Grass species, line diameter, throttle use, moisture and cutting technique will change the result.

For heavy weeds or woody stems, use only the cutting equipment and diameter authorised for the installed head. A larger line is not automatically an upgrade: it can overload a head or engine if the specification does not permit it.
Is the RLT254SDSO comfortable to use?
Expect a noticeable physical commitment. CHOICE lists 5.8kg, while the product sheet lists 6.2kg net, both before you account for fuel and any difference in fitted equipment. The harness and front handle improve control, but they do not make the machine lightweight.

One ProductReview.com.au owner described the trimmer as operating well but feeling engine-heavy. That is an individual experience, not a measured balance test, yet it highlights why harness adjustment matters. Set the suspension point so the head does not constantly pull downward, keep the shaft close to level, and take breaks rather than continuing through hand or shoulder fatigue.
The operator’s manual warns that actual vibration exposure varies with operating conditions. Follow its vibration guidance, rotate tasks where possible and stop if numbness, tingling or loss of control develops.
What maintenance does a two-stroke trimmer require?
Maintenance is manageable but more involved than charging a cordless tool. Make the following checks part of your routine:
- Before each session: inspect the guard, head, line, handle, shaft coupling and harness; remove grass wrapped around the head.
- Fuel system: use freshly prepared 50:1 mix in a marked container and keep the tank and cap free of dirt.
- Head and line: keep the correct diameter installed and replace line or a bump knob that is cracked, worn or feeding inconsistently.
- Cooling and cleanliness: clear grass and dust from accessible air passages and the engine area according to the manual.
- Fasteners: check for loosening caused by vibration, especially around the handle, guard and head.
- Storage: follow the manual’s procedure for fuel and seasonal storage rather than leaving an unknown mixture in the tank indefinitely.
The supplied combination wrench covers routine adjustments, but the manual remains the authority for any internal engine service, spark-plug specification or disassembly procedure not listed here.

What do owners report about reliability?
ProductReview.com.au shows a 3.0/5 aggregate from eight reviews. Its category scores are 4.0 for value, 4.5 for safety, 3.6 for build quality, 3.6 for ease of use and 3.2 for cleaning and maintenance. Eight reviews are a small, self-selected sample; they indicate ownership sentiment, not a failure rate or controlled durability study.
One verified reviewer reported easy starting and straightforward line loading, followed by a head failure after approximately nine to ten months of heavy use. Another owner reported good operation but an engine-heavy balance. These accounts point to two practical checks: inspect the head regularly if you trim intensively, and spend time adjusting the harness before judging comfort.
Can you get replacement parts and line?
Consumables are the most straightforward requirement. The Speedwinder head is specified for 2.4mm nylon line, while the Pro Cut 2 head is specified for 2.7mm line. Buy by head and model, not by appearance alone. A replacement head, bump knob or spool must match the RLT254SDSO assembly and the shaft connection.
Because CHOICE treats this as a discontinued petrol model, stock and regional support may vary. Before ordering, compare the model number printed on your machine with the part listing, confirm whether the listing is for the complete head or only a wear component, and check that the seller ships to your country. If a part is unavailable, an apparently similar head may still have the wrong thread, guard clearance or line rating.
How does it compare with a cordless trimmer?
The meaningful choice is not simply petrol versus battery; it is whether your work pattern rewards endurance or low ownership effort.
| Decision factor | RLT254SDSO petrol configuration | Typical cordless alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Operating energy | 50:1 petrol/oil mix; refuel with prepared fuel | Rechargeable battery; no fuel mixing |
| Long sessions | Can continue after refuelling, subject to fuel and maintenance | Limited by battery capacity and spare batteries |
| Carried weight | Approximately 5.8–6.2kg before fuel, depending on source and configuration | Varies widely; many are lighter, but no specific comparison weight is established here |
| Cutting path | 430mm on the product sheet or 457mm in manual/CHOICE data | Model-dependent; compare the manufacturer’s measured swath |
| Line loading | Speedwinder bump feed with 2.4mm line; Pro Cut 2 supports 2.7mm | Model-dependent spool or bump-feed system |
| Shaft and accessories | Split shaft and Expand-It attachment capability | Usually fixed to the tool’s own accessory system |
| Maintenance burden | Fuel preparation, engine care, vibration checks and head maintenance | Charging, battery care and head maintenance; no two-stroke mix |
| Evidence available | Owner reviews plus published specifications; no independent performance score in the open data | Compare each model’s measured weight, swath, battery system and warranty |
Choose the Ryobi when uninterrupted petrol operation, a straight shaft or Expand-It compatibility outweighs the extra weight and fuel work. Choose cordless when low noise is important to your situation, you already own a compatible battery platform, or most sessions are short enough that charging is not a problem. The available evidence does not support claiming that one power source cuts faster in every yard.

What are the main advantages and disadvantages?
Advantages
- 25.4cc full-crank petrol engine suited to larger areas.
- Long straight shaft and supplied harness for reach and sustained trimming.
- Split shaft for storage and Expand-It attachment potential.
- Two supplied head configurations, including the Speedwinder loading system.
- Broad published cutting-path figures of 430mm or 457mm, depending on measurement source.
- Two-year replacement warranty listed in the product documentation and CHOICE data.
Disadvantages
- At roughly 5.8–6.2kg before fuel, it can fatigue users during long sessions.
- Requires accurate 50:1 mixing and responsible fuel storage.
- Vibration and engine balance demand correct harness setup and breaks.
- Published power and swath figures are inconsistent across documents.
- As a discontinued model, replacement-part availability may differ by region.
- Owner feedback is limited and mixed, with anecdotal reports of a head failure under heavy use.
Who should buy the Ryobi RLT254SDSO?
It makes the most sense for a homeowner with a large or rough property, long periods of trimming and access to a reliable petrol-fuel routine. It is also a logical choice if the split shaft and Expand-It interface match attachments you already own or plan to use.
Look elsewhere if you prioritise the lowest carried weight, want to avoid fuel handling, trim only small areas or cannot obtain model-specific parts locally. The machine’s size and two-stroke requirements are not minor inconveniences; they define the ownership experience.
What should you check before buying a used or old-stock unit?
- Verify that the model marking is exactly RLT254SDSO and that the product includes the guard, harness, shaft components and both specified head parts advertised.
- Inspect the split-shaft coupling, drive shaft, head, bump knob and deflector for cracks or missing hardware.
- Ask how the fuel was mixed and stored; unknown or stale fuel is a warning sign.
- Check that the engine starts, idles and accepts throttle without abnormal noise, and stop immediately if the head wobbles.
- Confirm local access to 2.4mm line and compatible replacement-head components before committing to the purchase.
- Retain the manual and proof of purchase where possible, since warranty terms and parts support depend on region and seller.
These checks cannot guarantee future reliability, but they reduce the risk of inheriting a damaged head, incorrect line system or neglected fuel equipment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I leave mixed fuel in the RLT254SDSO between jobs?
The available specifications establish the 50:1 ratio but do not set a universal storage period. Follow the operator’s manual for your market and use a dated, labelled fuel container so you can discard questionable mix safely instead of guessing.
Does the split shaft make the Ryobi easier to transport?
Yes, separating the boom reduces the package length for storage or transport. The attachment joint still needs to be fully engaged and secured each time, so compact storage should not be confused with a tool-free setup.
Why are two different cutting widths listed for the same model?
The product sheet gives 430mm, while the manual and CHOICE data give 457mm. They may reflect different head, guard or measurement conventions; use the specification for the exact configuration installed on your trimmer.

No. It is the amount listed as supplied in the box and is only enough for a limited quantity of 50:1 mix. You will need additional compatible two-stroke oil for ongoing use.
What should I do if the line keeps breaking?
Stop the engine, confirm the line diameter matches the installed head, inspect the outlet eyelets and check that the line was wound evenly. Repeated breakage can also indicate a damaged head or contact with hard edging, so replace worn components rather than fitting thicker line outside the specification.
