The Indian rupee weakened for a second straight session on Friday, 23 October 2026, falling 12 paise to a provisional close of ₹94.93 per U.S. dollar. Higher crude prices, losses in domestic equities, foreign-investor selling and renewed Middle East tensions combined to keep the currency under pressure. The rupee opened at ₹94.78, touched an intraday low of ₹94.98 and finished below the previous session’s ₹94.81 close.
Why did the rupee fall 12 paise?
Traders attributed the decline to a combination of costlier oil, weaker Indian share markets, a firmer U.S. dollar and geopolitical risk. Brent crude futures were near USD 114.31 a barrel, up 1.01%, as Saudi-Houthi tensions raised concern about possible disruption and further volatility in energy markets. Because India imports most of its crude oil, an increase in the dollar cost of energy can raise demand for dollars and weigh on the rupee.

Net foreign institutional investor equity selling was reported at ₹3,458.70 crore on Thursday. Domestic market weakness also reduced support for the currency: the Sensex fell 125.56 points to 73,123.83, while the Nifty declined 87.65 points to 22,600.
The U.S. Dollar Index, which measures the dollar against a basket of major currencies, rose 0.12% to 101.73. A stronger dollar generally makes emerging-market currencies, including the rupee, more vulnerable.

Oil is a central factor for the rupee because higher import bills increase the amount of foreign currency Indian companies need to buy. In Friday’s market, Brent’s move toward USD 114 a barrel coincided with concern over Saudi-Houthi tensions in Yemen and the wider Middle East. Geopolitical stress can also encourage investors to hold U.S. dollars as a safe-haven asset. That can strengthen the dollar at the same time that India’s importers are seeking more of it, creating a two-sided squeeze on USD-INR.
What role did foreign flows and the RBI play?
Foreign selling reduces demand for Indian assets and can involve converting rupees into dollars for repatriation. That flow was one reason traders maintained a negative near-term view. However, the rupee can find support if the Reserve Bank of India supplies dollars or otherwise smooths disorderly moves in the foreign-exchange market.

Mirae Asset Sharekhan research analyst Anuj Choudhary said the rupee could retain a “slight negative bias” because of elevated crude prices, Middle East tensions, weak domestic markets and FII selling. He also identified softer U.S. Treasury yields and fresh RBI intervention as possible support at lower levels.

Qualified institutional buyers bid for 70.85 crore shares against 4.90 crore reserved shares, or 14.46 times the allocation. The bids included 34.51 crore shares from domestic financial institutions, 26.95 crore from foreign institutional investors and 4.40 crore from mutual funds. Choudhary’s cited near-term spot range was ₹94.65 to ₹95.25 per U.S. dollar. The range is an analyst estimate, not a guaranteed trading band.
