BashBox is a pure-PHP, sandboxed Bash interpreter for running untrusted or AI-generated shell scripts without handing them to the host operating system. Instead of calling proc_open, exec, shell_exec, system or passthru, it maps Bash syntax to PHP command classes, stores files in a virtual filesystem, and applies limits to commands, loops, output and recursion. The default setup has no access to your disk and no network access. That makes BashBox useful for PHP coding assistants, CI jobs and code-execution services that need Bash-like behavior with explicit policy controls. It is early-stage software (version 0.1.0 was released on October 12, 2026), so treat its documented boundaries as engineering controls rather than proof of complete Bash compatibility or a security guarantee.

What is BashBox and why would a PHP application need it?

BashBox is a Bash-like interpreter implemented in PHP 8.4 or newer. It is designed for applications that need to execute shell-style instructions generated by an AI agent, supplied by a user, or assembled by an automation workflow without spawning a real shell process. The interpreter parses commands and dispatches them to PHP implementations, so the application can decide which filesystem, network and resource policies apply.

That distinction matters because a normal PHP call to a shell inherits the host’s operating-system privileges, environment and filesystem view. A generated command such as rm -rf, a path traversal, or a network request can become a production incident if it reaches the host unchanged. BashBox’s documented model is deny-by-default: commands run against a selected filesystem backend, network support is absent unless configured, and gas-style counters stop runaway work.

The project describes itself as “a sandboxed bash interpreter for AI agents, written in pure PHP 8.4+.” Packagist lists release 0.1.0, published October 12, 2026 at 17:37 UTC, under the MIT license. Command coverage and APIs may change quickly at this stage.

How do I install BashBox in a PHP project?

Use Composer in an application running PHP 8.4 or later. The package requirement is ^8.4.0; older PHP versions do not satisfy it.

  1. Confirm the runtime with php -v and make sure the reported major and minor version is 8.4 or newer.
  2. From the project directory, run composer require shipfastlabs/bashbox.
  3. Load Composer’s autoloader in the entry point with require __DIR__ . '/vendor/autoload.php';.
  4. Create a Bash instance, execute a command, and inspect the returned standard output and exit code.
<?php
require __DIR__ . '/vendor/autoload.php';

use ShipfastLabsBashBoxBash;

$bash = new Bash();
$result = $bash->exec('echo "Hello, World!"');

echo $result->stdout;
$status = $result->exitCode;

The exact namespace and supporting class names should be checked against the installed package’s API documentation because this is a young release. The essential integration pattern is stable in the README: instantiate Bash, call exec(), then read stdout and exitCode.

Does BashBox call exec, proc_open or a real shell?

No. The documented implementation explicitly excludes proc_open, exec, shell_exec, system and passthru. Each supported command is represented by a PHP class, and the interpreter routes file access through its filesystem abstraction.

This prevents a BashBox script from silently creating an operating-system process through the usual PHP shell APIs. It does not mean every possible attack disappears: your PHP process, dependencies and configuration still need normal hardening, and a bug in the interpreter or a custom command could weaken isolation. The project documentation is a design description, not an independent security audit.

Can BashBox access my real filesystem?

Not with the default configuration. BashBox starts with InMemoryFs, a virtual filesystem that keeps files in memory and does not touch disk. Real project data becomes visible only when you deliberately select another backend.

InMemoryFs: strongest default isolation

Use InMemoryFs when an agent should create temporary files, transform text, or test a script without seeing host files. Data disappears with the BashBox instance unless your application exports it explicitly. This is the appropriate starting point for untrusted prompts.

OverlayFs: read a directory, copy writes

OverlayFs exposes a real directory for reads while keeping modifications in a copy-on-write layer. An agent can inspect a project snapshot, but writes do not directly alter the source tree until your application chooses to merge or discard the overlay. This is useful for patch generation and previews.

ReadWriteFs: writes confined to a configured root

ReadWriteFs writes inside a root directory you configure. The root is still a host path, so permissions, ownership and cleanup are your responsibility. Give it a dedicated workspace rather than a web-server document root or a directory containing secrets.

MountableFs: combine backends under mount points

MountableFs lets you mount different filesystem backends at different virtual paths. For example, a read-only project snapshot can be mounted beside an in-memory scratch directory. Keep mounts narrow and document which paths are writable; a broad mount can undo the isolation you intended.

Backend Host data visible Writes Typical use
InMemoryFs None by default Memory only Untrusted scripts and temporary work
OverlayFs Configured directory, read view Copy-on-write layer Previewing edits or generating patches
ReadWriteFs Configured root Inside that root Controlled workspace automation
MountableFs Only configured mounts Depends on each mounted backend Multi-directory application sandboxes

Path-traversal and null-byte blocking are documented safeguards, but they should complement—not replace—operating-system permissions and careful mount selection.

How do I enable network access safely?

Network access is off by default. Without a NetworkConfig, the optional curl command is unavailable. To permit requests, supply a network policy that states what may be contacted and how much work a request may consume.

Build an allowlist instead of opening the internet

An enabled configuration can restrict URL prefixes and HTTP methods, deny private address ranges, cap response size, limit redirects and set timeouts. A URL-prefix allowlist should contain only the API origins the agent needs; avoid a broad prefix such as https://. Allow GET only when the task does not require writes, and set short timeouts for interactive requests.

Protect against SSRF and resource exhaustion

Private-range denial helps block requests to internal networks, metadata services and loopback addresses. Response-size caps stop an otherwise valid endpoint from filling memory, while redirect limits prevent an allowlisted URL from bouncing to an unapproved destination. Timeouts bound how long a request occupies the PHP worker. These controls reduce risk but should be reviewed alongside your reverse proxy, DNS and egress firewall rules.

What does dangerouslyAllowFullInternetAccess do?

The README labels dangerouslyAllowFullInternetAccess for trusted environments only. Do not enable it for arbitrary prompts or multi-tenant workloads. If you need unrestricted access for a controlled test, run that test in a separate environment with operating-system and network isolation.

Network policy is an application decision: log the selected policy, expose only the minimum credentials, and never preload secrets into the shell environment merely because a script can make HTTP requests.

Which Bash features and commands are supported?

BashBox implements a broad, Bash-like subset rather than claiming to be a complete Bash replacement. The README documents pipelines, redirects, variables, control flow, functions, command substitution and shell builtins. It lists more than 35 built-in commands.

Shell syntax and builtins

Documented builtins include cd, export, unset, set, source, eval, read, loop control, return, exit, shift, getopts, let and mapfile. Pipelines, redirects and substitutions allow familiar script composition, but edge cases can differ from GNU Bash. Test the exact syntax your agent is likely to emit before relying on it in production.

Command families

  • Output: echo, printf and cat.
  • Files and directories: ls, mkdir, rm, cp and mv.
  • Text processing: grep, sort, uniq, wc, cut, tr and sed.
  • Utilities and information: additional documented utility and information commands, plus base64.
  • Networking: optional curl, available only when a network policy enables it.

“35+ commands” is the published coverage figure; no independent compatibility matrix or performance benchmark is published. Commands that depend on external binaries, kernel features or a particular GNU implementation should be treated as unsupported until verified in your own test suite.

How do limits stop an AI-generated script from running forever?

Limits are part of BashBox’s API, not an afterthought. BashOptions can receive a Limits object controlling counters such as maximum command count, loop iterations, output size and call depth. The project is evolving, so the documentation does not establish one fixed set of default totals; configure values appropriate to each workload.

Choose limits by workload

  • Short transformations: use a small command and output budget so an accidental loop fails quickly.
  • Code generation: allow more output and filesystem operations, but keep recursion and loop limits bounded.
  • Batch jobs: set explicit timeouts around the PHP invocation as a second layer, because interpreter counters do not cover every external resource.

Capture the execution result and logs when a limit is reached. Return a clear policy error to the agent rather than retrying the same script unchanged; automatic retries can multiply the cost of a runaway command.

How do I pass files, environment variables and standard input?

Use BashOptions when constructing the interpreter. It can preload files and environment variables, set Limits, select a filesystem backend and attach a network configuration. Use ExecOptions for per-invocation standard input.

The constructor property names above illustrate the documented concepts; verify signatures for the installed 0.1.0 package. Keep environment variables minimal. Do not pass database passwords, cloud credentials or the host process’s complete environment into an interpreter that may run model-generated text.

Can I add my own commands?

Yes. BashBox supports custom commands by extending AbstractCommand and implementing execute. Register a command only after defining its input validation, output behavior, filesystem access and resource cost.

  1. Extend AbstractCommand in your application code.
  2. Implement execute so it accepts parsed arguments and returns the command’s documented result.
  3. Reject unexpected options, paths and data sizes before doing work.
  4. Register the command with the BashBox command set.
  5. Add tests for malformed input, limit exhaustion and attempts to access paths outside the intended virtual filesystem.

A custom command runs inside the PHP process, so it can be more powerful than the built-ins you are trying to constrain. Never call shell functions from a custom command, and avoid network or direct filesystem APIs unless the command enforces the same policy objects as BashBox.

How does BashBox compare with containers, virtual machines and other interpreters?

BashBox trades operating-system isolation for PHP-level policy control and low integration overhead. It is not a replacement for a container or virtual machine when an attacker may exploit the host process, PHP runtime or a native extension.

Decision axis BashBox Container Virtual machine Other virtual interpreter
Process isolation No host shell process; PHP classes execute commands Operating-system process namespace and isolation mechanisms Guest operating system boundary Depends on implementation; not stated
Filesystem default In-memory virtual filesystem Container filesystem, with mounts configured by operator Virtual disk or shared mounts Not stated
Network default Disabled; URL and method policy when enabled Depends on network setup Depends on virtual network setup Not stated
Resource controls Command, loop, output and recursion counters OS quotas and runtime controls VM and guest quotas Not stated
Bash coverage Documented Bash-like syntax and 35+ commands Native Bash if installed Native Bash if installed Implementation-specific
PHP integration Composer package and PHP API Requires process and image orchestration Requires VM management Depends on language and package
Mount real data Explicit filesystem backends Explicit host or volume mounts Virtual disks or shares Not stated

There is no published numerical performance comparison. Select BashBox when PHP-native integration and fine-grained, application-level policy are the priority; select a container or VM when a stronger boundary is required and the operational cost is acceptable. A layered design can use BashBox for syntax and policy inside a separately isolated worker.

What are BashBox’s main limitations and failure modes?

  • Incomplete compatibility: a script written for a particular Bash or GNU utility version may use syntax or flags BashBox does not implement.
  • Changing API surface: version 0.1.0 is early; command coverage, defaults and class signatures can change.
  • No independent audit: documented path checks, virtual filesystems and counters have not been independently audited in the available material.
  • Policy mistakes: an overly broad mount, URL prefix or custom command can expose more data than intended.
  • Resource blind spots: interpreter counters do not replace PHP worker timeouts, memory limits, process supervision and OS-level quotas.

When a script fails unexpectedly

  1. Inspect stdout and exitCode separately; an empty output stream does not prove success.
  2. Check whether the command is in the installed release’s command registry.
  3. Verify that the path exists in the selected virtual filesystem, not merely on the host.
  4. Review loop, output and call-depth limits before increasing them.
  5. If networking is involved, confirm that NetworkConfig exists, the URL prefix and method are allowed, private-range denial is not blocking the destination, and the response or redirect limit was not exceeded.

Pin the package version in production, run representative agent prompts in CI, and review release notes before upgrading.

Is BashBox ready for production AI agents?

It can be a useful component for controlled workloads, especially when scripts should operate on an in-memory or explicitly mounted workspace. Production readiness depends on your threat model: treat BashBox as one policy layer, place untrusted jobs in a separately restricted worker, apply PHP and operating-system limits, and monitor failures. Do not advertise complete Bash compatibility, measured speed or guaranteed security when the project publishes no benchmark or independent audit.

For a first deployment, keep network disabled, use InMemoryFs, expose a small command set, set conservative limits, and promote to overlay or read-write mounts only after tests demonstrate the required behavior. Revisit those choices whenever the package version or your agent prompt policy changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What PHP versions are supported by BashBox?

The package requires PHP ^8.4.0, so PHP 8.4 and compatible later 8.x releases are the supported baseline. Check the package metadata when a newer major PHP version is introduced.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can BashBox run arbitrary Bash scripts from a file?

It can interpret supported Bash-like syntax supplied to the execution API, but compatibility is implementation-specific. Load the script into the virtual filesystem or pass its contents, then test commands and flags that depend on a particular GNU Bash environment.

Does disabling the network also block local API calls?

With no NetworkConfig, the optional curl command is unavailable, so BashBox does not provide its documented HTTP path. Other PHP code in the surrounding application could still make requests, which is why the interpreter should run in a worker with its own egress policy.

Where should I store files created by an AI agent?

Use InMemoryFs for disposable work, or an OverlayFs layer when a human or service must review changes before applying them. If persistent writes are necessary, dedicate a narrowly scoped ReadWriteFs root and keep secrets outside every mounted path.

Is BashBox faster than starting Bash with proc_open?

No published benchmark establishes a speed advantage or disadvantage. BashBox’s documented benefit is policy control and PHP-native integration, not a measured performance result.
