RPCS3 has reported a Windows-specific change that cuts Gran Turismo 6 PPU/SPU recompilation on an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D from 2 minutes 50 seconds to 1 minute 55 seconds. That is 55 seconds less waiting. RPCS3 describes the result as “48% faster” because the rate of completing the job increased by about 47.8%; the elapsed wait itself fell by about 32.4%.
The change replaces Windows’ older NT heap with SegmentHeap for the multithreaded recompilation workload. It targets memory-allocation contention in LLVM while PPU and SPU modules are being compiled. It is not evidence that games render 48% more frames per second, and the developer says the implementation still needs additional testing.

Why is RPCS3 48% faster on a Ryzen 9 9950X3D?
The reported gain comes primarily from an RPCS3 emulator change, not from a new CPU feature. On Windows, RPCS3 now uses SegmentHeap instead of the older NT heap for multithreaded PPU/SPU recompilation. The benchmark used Gran Turismo 6 on a Ryzen 9 9950X3D, and the complete recompilation finished in 115 seconds instead of 170 seconds.
Those timings produce two valid percentages:
- Elapsed-time reduction: 55 seconds saved from 170 seconds, or approximately 32.4% less waiting.
- Throughput increase: 170 divided by 115 is about 1.478, which is a roughly 47.8% higher completion rate, rounded by RPCS3 to 48% faster.
Calling the result “48% faster” therefore describes throughput rather than claiming that the stopwatch time was cut by 48%.

What does the Windows SegmentHeap change do?
SegmentHeap is a Windows heap allocator designed to handle allocation patterns differently from the NT heap. RPCS3 contributor Megamouse investigated the recompilation path after observing that, once the initial modules had been compiled, PPU compilation was using only about 20% CPU.
The investigation pointed to LLVM memory allocation and deallocation operations sharing a common lock. With many compiler threads requesting memory, fragmentation could also leave threads waiting for a sufficiently large contiguous block. Those waits limited parallelism even on a high-end processor. SegmentHeap is intended to reduce that allocator contention for this workload, allowing more of the available threads to make progress.

Does the RPCS3 update increase gameplay FPS?
No. The reported measurement covers the time spent recompiling PPU and SPU modules, not frame rendering during gameplay. It cannot support a claim that Gran Turismo 6 or any other RPCS3 title runs at 48% higher FPS.
Recompilation is most visible when a game needs to build modules. Compiled code is generally cached for later launches, so subsequent starts may not repeat the full wait unless the cache is removed, invalidated, or a different build requires new modules. Once a title is running, frame rate depends on factors such as the game’s emulation workload, graphics settings, drivers, and CPU/GPU performance rather than this one allocator path.
Is the 48% gain from the CPU or from the emulator update?
The cited comparison is a before-and-after result of the RPCS3 Windows allocator change on one named processor. The Ryzen 9 9950X3D is the test platform, but the evidence does not establish a universal 48% improvement for every CPU, game, operating system, or RPCS3 build.

Results can vary with the processor’s core and thread count, Windows version, RPCS3 build, the number and type of PPU/SPU modules, and whether the launch is a first-run compilation or a cached start. A different CPU may benefit less, more, or not measurably at all. The available report also does not provide a cross-CPU table or a separate SPU-only and PPU-only timing.
When will an RPCS3 player notice the optimization?
You are most likely to notice it during a first launch, after clearing a cache, after changing an emulator build, or whenever RPCS3 must regenerate modules. The reported workload combines PPU and SPU recompilation; it is not a general startup or loading-time guarantee for every game.
- First compilation: the change may shorten the period when RPCS3 appears busy compiling modules.
- Cached launches: the full recompilation usually does not run again, so the allocator change may have little visible effect.
- New or invalidated caches: a title that recompiles can expose the largest potential time saving.
What are the limitations of the reported result?
The evidence is one reported benchmark: Gran Turismo 6, a Ryzen 9 9950X3D, and a Windows PPU/SPU recompilation workload. It does not establish performance for Linux or macOS, other games, other CPUs, or normal gameplay.

Megamouse also stated that he did not know whether SegmentHeap would break anything or how it would affect overall performance and that the change required additional testing. Treat the 48% figure as a useful indication of the optimization’s potential, not as a guaranteed result for every installation. If a new build causes crashes, failed compilations, or other regressions, using a build without the change while the implementation is evaluated is a reasonable recovery option.
How should readers interpret this update?
For Windows users with a Ryzen 9 9950X3D, the clearest takeaway is shorter waits when RPCS3 must compile PPU and SPU modules. The result is substantial for that specific workload, but it should not be translated into a frame-rate promise or a universal emulator-speed claim. The technical improvement is allocator contention relief during compilation; the CPU is the platform on which the reported measurement was made.

Will this make every RPCS3 game compile 48% faster?
No. The published timing covers one Gran Turismo 6 PPU/SPU workload on a Ryzen 9 9950X3D. Other games can have different module counts, compiler behavior, and thread utilization, so their gains may differ.

Does SegmentHeap work on Linux or macOS builds of RPCS3?
The reported change is Windows-specific because it replaces a Windows heap allocator. The cited result does not establish an equivalent change or performance result on Linux or macOS.
What happens if I delete my RPCS3 shader or emulator caches?
Deleting or invalidating caches can force compilation to run again, which is when this optimization is most likely to affect waiting time. It does not make gameplay render faster after the modules are already compiled.
