The Rockwell RG8082 is a petrol two-stroke line trimmer for large yards, but it is no longer a current model. Its 26cc, 0.65kW engine, 42cm cutting diameter and 4.8kg weight give it the reach and capacity expected of a full-size petrol trimmer. It uses a 40:1 petrol-to-two-stroke-oil mix, 2.7mm line and manual line feeding.
Whether it is a good buy now depends less on its original $149 listing than on condition, remaining warranty coverage and access to compatible line and parts. CHOICE publishes the core specifications but keeps its performance and usability scores behind membership, so there is no public test rating to support a stronger verdict. Treat an RG8082 as a used or old-stock machine that needs a careful inspection, not as a current cordless alternative.

The RG8082 is a petrol 2-stroke line trimmer described by CHOICE as a machine for a large yard. It is intended for cutting grass and soft vegetation along lawn edges, around obstacles and across areas where a mower cannot work efficiently. A petrol engine avoids a battery recharge stop and does not require a mains cable, which can still be useful on a large block.
The trade-off is that the RG8082 belongs to an older petrol platform. You must store and mix fuel, start a small combustion engine, manage exhaust and vibration, and maintain a machine whose manufacturer support and replacement-parts pipeline may be less predictable than those for a current product. Rockwell’s present garden catalogue emphasizes newer 18V equipment, including the RG8087, rather than the RG8082.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That makes the RG8082 most relevant in three situations: you already own one and need to keep it running; you find a clean, inexpensive used or old-stock unit; or you need petrol endurance and are prepared to maintain an older tool. It is a poor choice if you want a quiet, low-maintenance trimmer with straightforward battery and parts support.
What are the RG8082’s specifications?
The following figures are the model data shown in CHOICE’s comparison entry. The listed price and warranty are database information, not a guarantee that a used or discontinued machine still carries those terms.
| Specification | RG8082 detail | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Machine type | Petrol 2-stroke line trimmer | Runs on a petrol-and-two-stroke-oil mixture rather than a battery or mains power. |
| Intended yard size | Large yard | Its petrol runtime and 42cm swath suit extended trimming, provided the engine and fuel system are healthy. |
| Engine | 26cc, 0.65kW | A small engine class commonly used for general residential trimming. |
| Cutting diameter | 42cm | Covers a wide strip on each pass, reducing the number of passes across open edges. |
| Cutting lines | Two | Uses a twin-line head rather than a single exposed strand. |
| Line diameter | 2.7mm | Buy line at this diameter unless the manual or a verified replacement specification says otherwise. |
| Line feed | Manual | You must stop or otherwise follow the head’s manual-feed procedure to release more line; it is not an automatic-feed system. |
| Shaft | Curved | Provides a different balance and trimming posture from a straight-shaft machine; try the position before buying used. |
| Weight | 4.8kg | Fuel, line and the cutting head contribute to the carrying load during longer sessions. |
| Length | 152cm | Long enough for standing operation for many users, but storage space and transport need to accommodate it. |
| Fuel mix | 40:1 petrol to two-stroke oil | Use the specified ratio and an oil intended for air-cooled two-stroke engines. |
| Warranty shown by CHOICE | Two years | Check whether the date, seller and local consumer-law conditions make that coverage applicable; a discontinued unit may be outside it. |
| CHOICE listed price | $149 | A historical comparison-listing figure, not a current recommended retail price or a reliable used-market valuation. |
| Current status | Discontinued | Condition, stock and parts availability matter more than the original list price. |
What fuel mix does the RG8082 use?
The RG8082’s manufacturer-recommended and test fuel mix is 40:1. That means 40 parts petrol to one part suitable two-stroke oil by volume. Do not run straight petrol in a two-stroke engine: the oil carried in the mixture provides the lubrication the engine needs.
How to prepare a 40:1 mixture
- Use a clean, approved fuel container with a cap and clear volume markings.
- Measure the petrol and two-stroke oil accurately for a 40:1 ratio. For example, 1 litre of petrol requires 25 millilitres of oil; 5 litres requires 125 millilitres.
- Add the measured oil and petrol to the container, close it and mix gently according to the oil maker’s directions.
- Label the container as two-stroke fuel and keep it away from ignition sources and children.
- Use only the amount you can reasonably consume while fresh. Follow the current owner’s manual and local fuel-storage rules rather than relying on an old internet recipe.
Never pour unmixed petrol or an incorrectly measured blend into the tank. A too-lean mixture can reduce lubrication, while an overly oil-rich mixture can cause smoke, fouling and poor running. If you are buying a used RG8082, ask how the previous owner mixed and stored fuel; stale or contaminated fuel is a more useful warning sign than cosmetic scratches.
How does the RG8082’s cutting system work?
The machine uses two 2.7mm cutting lines and a 42cm cutting diameter. The larger line specification is appropriate to the head’s design, but line fit is not universal: the replacement must match both the diameter and the head’s loading method.

Manual line feeding
CHOICE identifies the line feed as manual. That means the operator cannot expect the head to release line automatically as it wears. Read the head instructions before attempting to pull, wind or release line, and stop the engine before working near the cutting head. A manual system is mechanically simple, but it makes correct line length and safe reloading the operator’s responsibility.
Choosing replacement line
The clearest accessory specification is 2.7mm trimmer line for the RG8082. Product listings can use the words “universal” or “fits Rockwell,” but those claims do not prove that the spool, eyelets and winding direction match this head. Confirm the line diameter, spool dimensions and head design against the manual or the part in your machine before ordering. If a listing gives only a brand name without dimensions, treat it as unverified.
Is a petrol RG8082 better than a cordless trimmer?
Neither power system wins in every yard. The RG8082’s petrol engine can keep working as long as you have correctly mixed fuel, while a cordless trimmer trades refuelling for charging and battery management.
| Decision point | RG8082 petrol 2-stroke | Current cordless trimmer |
|---|---|---|
| Energy source | 40:1 petrol-and-oil mixture | Rechargeable battery and charger system |
| Work continuity | Can continue after a refuel, subject to fuel and engine condition | Limited by battery capacity and the number of charged packs |
| Starting | Requires a small-engine starting procedure and fresh fuel | Usually starts with a control switch or trigger |
| Maintenance | Fuel handling, air/fuel-system care, spark-plug and engine maintenance | Less engine maintenance, but batteries age and chargers or packs can become unavailable |
| Noise and emissions | Combustion exhaust and engine noise | No tailpipe exhaust during use and generally a different, often less intrusive sound profile |
| Parts outlook | Discontinued model; verify every part before purchase | Depends on the current platform and manufacturer support |
| Large-yard practicality | Wide 42cm cut and petrol refuelling can suit long sessions | Works well when you have enough charged capacity for the area |
Choose the RG8082 only if its running cost, fuel routine and maintenance burden fit your habits. For a small suburban patch, the 4.8kg petrol machine can be more equipment than necessary. For a remote or extensive yard, the absence of charging infrastructure may outweigh the disadvantages, but only if the individual unit starts and runs reliably.
How should you inspect and start a used RG8082?
Because the model is discontinued, inspection is more important than the original specification sheet. Ask the seller to demonstrate a cold start, idle and cutting-head operation rather than accepting a statement that it “ran last season.”

Pre-purchase inspection
- Check the fuel tank, cap and fuel lines for cracking, softness, staining or leakage.
- Inspect the shaft, handle, guard and cutting head for bends, missing fasteners or impact damage.
- Verify that the two-line head can be opened and that its spool or loading parts are present.
- Look for excessive corrosion, stripped screws and evidence that the engine has been stored with old fuel.
- Confirm that the throttle and stop controls move freely and return as intended.
- Ask for the owner’s manual, purchase date and any service records; these may be more valuable than the discontinued model’s original box.
Starting and operating checks
- Place the trimmer on stable ground, keep people and animals clear and use the protective equipment specified by the manual.
- Confirm that the tank contains the correct 40:1 mixture, not straight petrol or an unknown blend.
- Follow the model’s cold-start sequence exactly; do not improvise choke, primer or throttle steps when the manual is available.
- Let the engine settle at idle and listen for hunting, stalling, rattling or fuel leakage.
- Test the controls and stop switch before bringing the head near vegetation.
- With the guard installed, trim a small area and check that the head spins smoothly without unusual vibration.
Do not bypass a missing guard or continue using a machine that leaks fuel. If it will not start after correct fuel and the manual’s procedure, the cause could be stale fuel, ignition, carburetion, compression or a blocked fuel system; a repair shop familiar with small two-stroke engines is safer than repeated uncontrolled adjustments.
What maintenance does the RG8082 require?
Maintenance begins with fuel discipline. Mix only the specified 40:1 fuel, keep the container clean and avoid leaving old fuel in the machine for long storage unless the manual specifically directs otherwise. Before every session, inspect the line head, guard, shaft, controls and fuel system.
Keep the air inlet and cooling areas free of grass and debris so the engine can shed heat. Replace worn or damaged 2.7mm line rather than compensating with a heavier size. Follow the manual’s intervals for spark-plug inspection, air-filter cleaning and fastener checks; those intervals are not stated in the public specification entry, so they should not be guessed.
At the end of a season, clean the exterior, remove grass from the head and shaft, and store the machine upright in a dry, ventilated place away from flames. Fuel-storage and draining instructions vary by engine design and local rules, so use the current manual for the final procedure.

How good is the RG8082 according to independent testing?
There is not enough public test information to assign the RG8082 a numerical performance verdict. CHOICE exposes the specification table but keeps its Expert Rating, performance, ease-of-use, starting, vibration, noise and related scores behind membership access. Those scores should not be inferred from the engine size or cutting diameter.

A ProductReview discussion includes anecdotal comments about two-stroke fuel mixing, starting and fuel-cap leakage on related Rockwell models. These are owner reports, not controlled tests and not proof that every RG8082 has the same fault. Use them as questions to investigate during inspection: check the cap and tank for leaks, ask how fuel was mixed, and insist on a cold-start demonstration.
No model-specific sales total or failure-rate statistic establishes how often the RG8082 breaks down. The responsible conclusion is therefore conditional: the published hardware specifications are clear, but real-world reliability and ease-of-use cannot be scored from the public evidence alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where can you get RG8082 parts and accessories?
Start with the owner’s manual, the original seller and Rockwell’s current support channels, but expect discontinued-model limitations. A listing for a third-party brushcutter attachment advertises compatibility with RS8020, RG8082 and RG8170. That is a lead, not confirmation of official support, current stock or safe fit.

Before buying any attachment, compare the shaft connection, drive interface, guard requirements and manufacturer instructions with your machine. Never assume that a shared model number in an online title means the attachment is approved for your exact revision.
For routine use, a correctly specified 2.7mm line is the most straightforward consumable to source. Keep the old spool or a precise photograph and measurements when contacting a seller. If the head, fuel cap, tank, carburetor or control assembly is damaged, obtain a confirmed part number before paying; generic brushcutter parts may look similar while fitting differently.

What are the RG8082’s main advantages and drawbacks?
Advantages
- Petrol operation does not depend on a charged battery or extension cable.
- A 42cm cutting diameter covers a broad strip in open areas.
- The 26cc, 0.65kW engine and 4.8kg listed weight are substantial enough for the large-yard use category.
- Two 2.7mm lines provide a clearly defined replacement-line specification.
- A manual-feed head has fewer automatic-feed mechanisms to troubleshoot.
Drawbacks
- The RG8082 is discontinued, so stock, warranty and replacement parts are uncertain.
- It requires 40:1 fuel mixing, storage precautions and small-engine maintenance.
- At 4.8kg, it may feel tiring for users who only need occasional light trimming.
- Manual line feeding is less convenient than an automatic or bump-feed design for some operators.
- Public CHOICE performance scores are unavailable, preventing a verified test-based recommendation.
- Third-party attachment compatibility must be checked individually.
Should you buy a Rockwell RG8082 today?
Buy one only after confirming that it starts cold, runs without leaks or abnormal vibration, includes its guard and controls, and has a realistic source of 2.7mm line and other wear parts. A low purchase price does not compensate for a seized engine, missing head components or an unavailable fuel-system part.
If you already own an RG8082, maintaining the correct 40:1 mixture and sourcing the right line can keep it useful, provided the machine passes safety checks. If you are choosing between this discontinued petrol trimmer and a supported cordless platform, compare the complete ownership picture: charging or fuel, runtime, weight, noise, maintenance, warranty and parts access. The RG8082’s specifications make it plausible for a large yard, but its age means condition and support should decide the purchase.

Can I run the RG8082 on regular unleaded petrol without oil?
No. It is a two-stroke engine specified for a 40:1 petrol-to-two-stroke-oil mixture. Straight petrol removes the lubrication carried by the mix and can cause severe engine damage.
Is the RG8082 suitable for edging a small residential lawn?
It can trim a small lawn, but its 4.8kg weight, petrol starting routine and 42cm cutting span may be unnecessary for short jobs. A lighter, currently supported trimmer may be easier if your work area is limited.
What should I do if my RG8082 has been stored with old fuel?
Do not keep trying to start it with an unknown mixture. Have the fuel system assessed and follow the manual’s draining and cleaning instructions; stale fuel can affect the tank, lines and carburetor.
Can I fit any universal brushcutter attachment to an RG8082?
No. Check the shaft connection, drive interface, guard and the attachment maker’s exact compatibility statement. A third-party listing that names the RG8082 is only a starting point, not proof of safe fit.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDoes the original two-year warranty still apply to a used RG8082?
Not necessarily. CHOICE lists a two-year warranty, but a discontinued or second-hand unit may be outside the warranty period or subject to seller-specific conditions. Verify the purchase date and local consumer-law coverage before relying on it.
