RoboForm is a capable, inexpensive password manager, but it is not a set-and-forget security choice. Its browser extension and mobile autofill are unusually smooth, it supports passkeys and hardware security keys, and its paid plans cost less than many rivals. The catch is a weak default PBKDF2 setting, a clumsy Windows desktop workflow, and a free plan that works on only one device. If you choose RoboForm, use a long unique master password, raise the PBKDF2 iteration count to at least 600,000, and enable a strong second factor such as a FIDO2 security key. Those changes address the most important weakness while preserving RoboForm’s advantages in form filling, sharing, and broad platform support.
What is RoboForm, and who is it for?
RoboForm is a cross-platform password manager for storing credentials, filling login and identity forms, generating passwords, and sharing vault items. It has applications for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS, browser extensions for major browsers, and an online portal. The service also handles passkeys, bookmarks, Safenotes, application logins on Windows, import and export, password-change history, and emergency access.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIt suits people who want fast autofill and a low annual price, especially households that need shared credentials. It is less suitable for someone who wants the strongest security defaults with no manual tuning or who expects a polished, self-contained Windows application. RoboForm’s central trade-off is simple: everyday use is easy once the browser extension or mobile app is in place, but the underlying security and desktop configuration deserve more attention than the friendly interface suggests.
- Best fit: users who value form filling, broad device coverage, sharing controls, and low recurring cost.
- Proceed carefully: users who will not change security settings or who rely heavily on a local-only Windows vault.
- Not a substitute for: a unique master password, device security, recovery planning, and independent breach-response steps.
Is RoboForm safe?
RoboForm uses strong encryption and a zero-knowledge design, and it has undergone recent independent testing. Its main documented weakness is not the AES-256 cipher itself but the default work factor used to protect a vault against offline password guessing.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Encryption and zero-knowledge design
RoboForm says it uses AES-256 encryption with PBKDF2-SHA256 to resist dictionary, brute-force, and related attacks. The master password is the secret key for the vault: decryption occurs on the user’s device, and the company says it cannot know the master password or read the stored data. In practical terms, a stolen encrypted vault still depends on the attacker’s ability to guess the master password and perform the key-derivation work for each guess.
That architecture protects the provider from directly seeing your saved passwords, but it does not make a weak master password safe. A long, unique passphrase remains the most important user-controlled defense. Do not reuse it for email, cloud storage, or any other account.
Independent assessment coverage
RoboForm’s help center says Secfault Security conducted two comprehensive security audits and penetration tests. The 2025 assessment covered Windows Desktop Client 9.6.6.2; the macOS desktop client and Safari extension 9.6.2; Android 9.6.9.3; iOS 9.6.4; Chrome, Edge, and Firefox extensions; the online portal; and the password generator. That scope is useful because weaknesses can occur in an extension or mobile autofill component even when the vault cryptography is sound.
An audit is evidence about the tested versions and scope, not a permanent guarantee. Keep applications and extensions updated, review new security notices, and treat an assessment as one part of a broader risk decision.
The PBKDF2 default is the serious caveat
PCWorld reported that RoboForm’s default PBKDF2 setting was 100,000 iterations. In the same comparison, Bitwarden used 600,000 iterations and 1Password used 650,000. PCWorld recommended raising RoboForm to at least 600,000. More iterations make every offline password guess more expensive if an attacker obtains an encrypted copy of the vault.
The setting does not change AES-256 and does not make a weak master password strong. It increases the computational cost of testing guesses. Raising it can make unlocking slightly slower, particularly on older phones or computers, so test the new value on every device you use before settling on it.

How to harden RoboForm before storing important accounts
- Create a unique master passphrase. Use several unrelated words or another long construction that you have never used elsewhere. Store a written recovery copy in a secure physical location if losing the password would permanently lock you out.
- Open RoboForm’s security or vault settings. Look for the PBKDF2 iteration-count control; the exact label and location can vary by application version.
- Raise the count to at least 600,000. Save the change, sign out and back in, and verify that your desktop and mobile clients can still unlock the vault.
- Turn on two-factor authentication. Hardware security keys provide the strongest phishing resistance among RoboForm’s listed methods. TOTP is a good fallback; email or SMS is better than no second factor but is more exposed to account-recovery and interception risks.
- Review trusted devices. Remove phones, browsers, and computers you no longer control, and require verification for new devices where the account offers that option.
- Plan emergency access. Choose a trusted contact and decide whether credentials should be released immediately or after a delay.
What security options does RoboForm provide?
RoboForm’s security feature set is broad. The quality of the outcome depends on which controls you actually enable and how carefully you manage recovery.

| Control | What it does | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Master password | Derives the key used to decrypt your vault on your device. | Use a long, unique passphrase; RoboForm cannot reset a forgotten one for you. |
| PBKDF2-SHA256 | Slows repeated password guesses before the vault key is derived. | The reported default was 100,000 iterations; raise it to at least 600,000. |
| Hardware security key | Adds a physical FIDO2-style factor to sign-in. | Register a spare key and keep it somewhere separate from your primary key. |
| TOTP | Uses time-based codes from an authenticator app. | Protect the authenticator backup and recovery codes. |
| Email or SMS 2FA | Delivers a one-time code through an account channel. | More convenient, but less resistant to phishing and phone-number takeover. |
| Passkeys | Stores and uses cryptographic sign-in credentials instead of passwords where supported. | Availability depends on the website and device operating system. |
| Trusted devices | Remembers approved devices to reduce repeated verification. | Revoke old or shared devices promptly. |
| Security Center | Finds weak, reused, or compromised passwords. | Use it as a prioritization tool, not proof that every exposed credential was found. |
How good are RoboForm’s autofill and everyday apps?
The browser extension and mobile app are RoboForm’s strongest user-experience areas. PCWorld found their layouts intuitive, and recognized websites generally accepted autofill and one-click login without friction. The service also fills identity and payment forms, which is where its long history as a form-filling tool is most apparent.
Browser extension
The extension places login suggestions near recognized fields and can launch a saved login with one click. That convenience depends on the extension being installed and active; the desktop program alone cannot provide the same one-click workflow. If a website has unusual fields, multiple accounts, or an embedded login window, check the suggested item before submitting and avoid blindly filling sensitive information into an unfamiliar domain.
Mobile autofill
On Android and iOS, enable RoboForm as the system’s password-autofill provider, then confirm that the keyboard or autofill prompt is selecting the expected account. Mobile apps expose a clipboard-clearing control, but the duration is not configurable. On desktop, PCWorld found no configurable automatic clipboard-clearing timeout, so avoid leaving copied passwords in the clipboard and clear it manually after use.
Windows desktop application
The Windows experience is the least polished part of the product. PCWorld described the interface as potentially confusing because users bounce between the desktop program and the browser extension. One-click login requires the extension, and local-only storage requires changing synchronization settings before adding data; that choice is not intuitive.
If you mainly use Windows, install the extension first, learn which actions open the desktop program, and test your preferred workflow with a noncritical login. If you need a vault that never synchronizes to RoboForm’s servers, configure local-only mode before importing or creating entries, then verify where the data is stored and how you will back it up.
Can RoboForm work without cloud synchronization?
Yes. RoboForm offers a local-only mode, but it is not the default workflow and must be selected before adding data. Because the setting is easy to miss, decide at setup whether you want synchronized access across devices or a vault confined to one computer.
Choose synchronized storage when
- You need the same credentials on a phone, computer, and tablet.
- You want emergency access or sharing to work across your account.
- You can protect every signed-in device and accept the provider’s account-recovery model.
Choose local-only storage when
- Your threat model requires the vault to remain on one machine.
- You can maintain encrypted backups and a tested recovery process yourself.
- You accept that mobile access, sharing, and automatic synchronization will be limited or unavailable.
Local-only mode is not automatically safer. A single-device vault can be lost through disk failure, theft, or ransomware unless you maintain secure backups. Conversely, synchronized storage can be practical when every endpoint is patched, screen-locked, and protected by strong account authentication.

How do sharing and emergency access work?
RoboForm supports sharing individual items or folders with three permission levels: Log In Only, Read and Write, and Full Control. That lets you give someone the ability to use a credential without necessarily allowing edits, or grant broader control when a family member or administrator must maintain the item.
Permission choices
| Permission | Appropriate use | Risk to review |
|---|---|---|
| Log In Only | A household member needs to sign in but should not edit the record. | The recipient can still access the account represented by the credential. |
| Read and Write | A colleague or partner must update the password or notes. | Changes can affect everyone using the shared item. |
| Full Control | An administrator needs to manage the folder and its contents. | Reserve it for people who genuinely need administrative authority. |
Emergency Access can release saved credentials, notes, and identities to a trusted contact immediately or after a waiting period ranging from 12 hours to 30 days. A delay gives you time to cancel an unexpected request, while immediate release may be appropriate when continuity matters more than that review window. Choose someone you trust, explain what will happen, and revisit the arrangement when relationships or account responsibilities change.
Does RoboForm detect breaches reliably?
RoboForm’s Security Center identifies weak, reused, and compromised passwords, and its breach-alert feature reports exposed credentials. These functions are useful for triage: fix reused passwords first, then address accounts tied to known incidents.
Do not interpret an empty result as proof that an address has never appeared in a breach. In PCWorld’s test, monitoring flagged only a few breaches for an email address known to have appeared in many more leaks. Check important accounts through the affected service’s own notices, change passwords after confirmed incidents, revoke active sessions where available, and enable two-factor authentication.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan RoboForm import my existing passwords?
RoboForm can import directly from LastPass, Bitwarden, Dashlane, 1Password, Keeper, NordPass, True Key, Enpass, Kaspersky, Proton Pass, and Myki. Other services can generally be moved by exporting a CSV file and importing it into RoboForm.
Migration is a security-sensitive operation. Export files are usually unencrypted, so create the file only on a trusted, malware-free computer, protect it during transfer, import it, and delete it securely afterward. Inspect the imported records for duplicate logins, outdated URLs, missing notes, and incorrectly mapped fields before relying on autofill.
What does RoboForm cost, and is the free plan enough?
The free tier includes unlimited passwords but limits the account to one device. That makes it reasonable for a single-computer user and a poor fit for anyone who expects a phone and computer to stay synchronized. The paid plans remove the device limit and retain the main security and sharing features.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How does RoboForm compare with other password managers?
RoboForm’s advantages are low annual pricing, excellent form filling, and a wide feature list. Its disadvantages are the low reported default iteration count and the awkward Windows and local-only workflows. Compare services on the factors that affect your own threat model rather than on feature-count marketing.
| Comparison factor | RoboForm position | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Key derivation defaults | 100,000 PBKDF2 iterations were reported by PCWorld; manual increase recommended. | Higher work factors raise the cost of offline guessing. |
| Browser autofill | Smooth on recognized sites according to PCWorld. | Reliable autofill reduces password exposure to copying and reuse. |
| Desktop workflow | Windows app can require switching between the program and extension. | Friction increases setup mistakes and support burden. |
| Mobile autofill | Intuitive layout and smooth autofill reported. | Important for people who sign in mainly on phones. |
| Free synchronization | Free account is limited to one device. | Users with multiple devices need Premium or another service. |
| Passkeys and hardware keys | Both are supported, alongside email, SMS, and TOTP 2FA. | Provides a path beyond password-only authentication. |
| Sharing and recovery | Three sharing permission levels and emergency release from 12 hours to 30 days. | Useful for households and continuity planning. |
| Breach monitoring | Available, but PCWorld found limited detection in a known-exposed test address. | Keep independent incident-response habits. |
| Annual individual price | $29.88 renewal shown for Premium when billed annually. | Compare the recurring renewal, not only the introductory monthly figure. |
What are RoboForm’s main disadvantages?
The weaknesses are concentrated in defaults and workflow rather than in a missing basic feature.
- Low default PBKDF2 work factor: the reported 100,000 iterations require manual hardening.
- Confusing Windows experience: desktop actions and browser-extension actions are split across interfaces.
- Awkward local-only setup: synchronization must be changed before adding data, and the choice is not obvious.
- Limited desktop clipboard control: no configurable automatic clearing timeout was found; mobile clearing exists but its duration cannot be set.
- One-device free tier: it does not meet normal phone-and-computer synchronization needs.
- Incomplete breach visibility: alerts should supplement, not replace, direct checks and incident response.
What are RoboForm’s strongest advantages?
RoboForm remains compelling when convenience and cost are weighted heavily.
- Broad coverage: Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, major browsers, an online portal, and Windows application logins.
- Strong everyday autofill: browser and mobile experiences were judged intuitive, with smooth one-click login on recognized sites.
- Form-filling depth: identities, payment details, bookmarks, and Safenotes sit alongside passwords.
- Modern authentication: passkeys and hardware security keys are supported in addition to conventional 2FA.
- Flexible sharing: item- and folder-level permissions allow narrower access than handing over an entire vault.
- Emergency planning: trusted contacts can receive selected data immediately or after a defined waiting period.
- Low recurring cost: Premium and Family prices undercut many comparable subscriptions at the listed rates.
How should a new user set up RoboForm safely?
Use this order so that a convenient autofill setup does not come at the expense of basic account security.
- Install RoboForm only from its official application or browser-extension channel, then update it before importing credentials.
- Create the master passphrase and record recovery information offline in a secure location.
- Enable the PBKDF2 control and raise it to at least 600,000 iterations, checking unlock performance on your slowest device.
- Register a hardware security key if available, plus a separate backup method and recovery codes.
- Install the browser extension and enable mobile autofill only on devices protected by a screen lock.
- Import passwords through a direct connector when available; otherwise use a temporary CSV and delete it securely after verification.
- Run Security Center checks, replace reused passwords, and prioritize email, banking, cloud, and work accounts.
- Set up sharing with the narrowest permission that meets the need. Avoid Full Control for ordinary household access.
- Configure Emergency Access with a trusted person and a waiting period that matches your circumstances.
- Review trusted devices, active sessions, and saved payment or identity data every few months.
What problems might appear, and how can you fix them?
Autofill does not appear
Confirm that the extension is enabled for the current site, that the browser is using the expected profile, and that the mobile operating system has RoboForm selected as its autofill provider. If the site has changed its login fields, open the saved item and verify its URL rather than repeatedly filling a mismatched record.
One-click login opens the wrong interface
On Windows, remember that one-click login depends on the browser extension even when the desktop application is installed. Re-enable or reinstall the extension, then test the login from the browser toolbar and from the saved item separately.

Unlocking became slow after raising PBKDF2
A higher iteration count is expected to increase derivation time. If the delay is excessive, test a slightly lower value while staying at or above the recommended 600,000 target where your devices can handle it, and avoid changing the setting repeatedly without recording the current value.
A shared password changed unexpectedly
Review which recipient has Read and Write or Full Control access. Reduce ordinary users to Log In Only, rotate the credential, and remove people who no longer need access.

The one-device limit means a free account may not provide another synchronized endpoint for recovery. Before relying on the free tier, keep a documented recovery route and consider Premium if you need dependable access from more than one device.
Is RoboForm worth it?
RoboForm is worth considering if you want inexpensive multi-device password management, dependable browser and mobile autofill, detailed form filling, and practical sharing. It is not the best choice for someone unwilling to change a weak security default or who expects the Windows application and local-only mode to be as seamless as the browser extension.
The sensible middle ground is to use RoboForm with a unique master passphrase, a PBKDF2 count of at least 600,000, and hardware-key 2FA where possible. With those safeguards, its low price and broad feature set can outweigh the configuration friction; without them, the polished interface can give a false sense that every important protection is already optimized.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can RoboForm use a security key without a paid subscription?
RoboForm lists hardware security keys as a supported two-factor method, but plan entitlements and current availability can change. Check the account’s security settings while signed in to confirm whether your chosen key and plan are eligible.
What happens if I forget my RoboForm master password?
Because the master password is the secret used to decrypt the vault, the provider cannot simply reveal it. Recovery depends on the account and recovery methods you configured, so keep an offline reminder and tested emergency plan before you need one.
Does RoboForm store my passwords on its servers?
RoboForm says vault data is encrypted with a key derived from your master password and decrypted on your device. Encrypted synchronization data may still be stored so your approved devices can sync, but the company says it cannot read the decrypted contents.
How often should I review RoboForm’s shared access?
Review sharing whenever a household, project team, or employment relationship changes, and at least a few times per year for long-lived folders. Remove former recipients and replace credentials that may have been viewed by someone who no longer needs them.
Can I use RoboForm for passkeys as well as passwords?
Yes. Passkey management is listed among RoboForm’s features, although a website and operating system must support passkeys for that sign-in method to appear. Keep a password or another recovery route for services that have not adopted passkeys.
