For a child who mainly wants to build, Minecraft can be the more contained starting point if you restrict multiplayer and communication. Roblox offers a broader mix of creator-made games and a path toward designing games, but parents need to assess individual experiences and review age-dependent controls. Neither platform is guaranteed safe, and there is no like-for-like evidence establishing that one company’s moderation catches more harmful content. This comparison focuses on how the games expose children to other people, what parents can manage, and the kinds of creative work they encourage. Details below reflect official guidance available as of October 30, 2026; features and menus can change.
At a glance
| Name | Best for | Key distinction | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roblox | Children interested in a variety of user-created games, or in eventually making games | Parents can manage experience maturity, selected games, communication, friends, spending and screen time; controls vary by age | Oct 2026 |
| Minecraft | Children who want to build and explore in a block-based world, especially with online play restricted | Microsoft/Xbox family permissions manage access to multiplayer, Realms, friends and communication | Oct 2026 |
Is Roblox or Minecraft safer for my child?
Neither can be declared safer overall from the available evidence. The more useful question is which kinds of exposure you can manage for your child, and whether the child’s preferred way to play fits those limits.

Roblox is a platform for discovering many games and experiences made by creators. That variety means the content and social features can differ from one experience to another. Parents can set maturity restrictions and manage access to specific experiences, but should not assume that a platform-level label settles whether every game is suitable for their child.
Minecraft is a block-building sandbox, but its online risk also depends on how it is played. A solo world or a world shared only with known people is different from joining a public server. Microsoft/Xbox family permissions let parents manage multiplayer and communication access, including when Minecraft is played on a non-Xbox device. Console-level settings may add another layer.

Roblox describes its filtering, content review and reporting systems, while also acknowledging: “However, we acknowledge that some content may slip through.” That is an important limit, not a measure of how often moderation fails. Minecraft Java Edition includes a player-reporting tool, including for private servers; that tool does not mean every server is pre-moderated. There is no independent, like-for-like estimate here of child safety or moderation effectiveness for the two platforms.

What can parents control on Roblox?
Roblox parental controls cover content maturity, selected experiences, communication, friends, spending and screen time. A linked parent account allows remote management; Parent mode on the child’s device provides most settings without linking a separate parent account. A linked account is useful when you want to change settings from your own device or receive applicable alerts, but it does not make every control permanent.
Start with the child’s actual account
Roblox describes Roblox Kids as generally covering ages 5–8 and Roblox Select as generally covering ages 9–15 in most regions. These are broad categories, not a universal guarantee of what a particular child’s account can access. Check the account itself: age category, age-check status, settings and available controls can affect what appears. Do not infer a setting’s status solely from a child’s age band, and remember that regional availability can differ.
Review the important settings
- Open Settings > Parental controls. Choose whether to link a parent account for remote updates and applicable alerts, or use Parent mode on the child’s device.
- Set Content restrictions. Review the maturity level and any allowed or blocked experiences. Check specific games that the child asks to play rather than relying only on a general category. A game’s thumbnail or title is not a complete suitability review.
- Review Communication. Check Experience Chat, Direct Chat and the child’s friend or trusted-friend settings. Roblox Kids chat is off by default; Roblox Select permits some age-restricted chat. Confirm the actual account’s settings and regional availability.
- Check connections and visibility. Review who can contact or invite the child, the child’s friends and trusted friends, and visibility or private-server options. A private server can reduce random contact, but it is not a guarantee that every participant is known or that reporting rules disappear.
- Review spending and time controls. Check spending limits or notifications and daily screen-time controls where available. Their availability and the parent’s authority over them change with age.
Roblox’s Parental Controls Overview documents the current control categories. From age 13, children manage their own screen-time limits and parental spending limits cease to apply, according to Roblox. Parents should therefore revisit settings as a child gets older rather than assuming a limit can be imposed indefinitely. Explain the change in advance so a child understands what autonomy means and which family rules still apply.

Minecraft’s parent-facing online controls primarily govern whether a child can enter multiplayer and communicate, rather than reviewing a catalogue of individual games. Configure the child’s Microsoft/Xbox family account and check any controls offered by the console where Minecraft is installed.
- Use the child’s Microsoft/Xbox family account. Confirm that the child is playing under the account whose permissions you intend to manage. Adult and child accounts can expose different menus.
- Review multiplayer permissions. Check whether the account can join multiplayer games and Realms. Restrict these permissions if the child is not ready for online play.
- Review friends and communication. Check permissions for adding friends and communicating with others. Consider who the child can encounter in a shared world, not just whether the child can launch the game.
- Check the console’s own settings. A console may provide additional account, communication or multiplayer controls. Review those separately; a Minecraft or Microsoft setting does not necessarily replace a device-level control.
- Keep the game updated. Minecraft’s published parental-control guide says those features are not provided for versions earlier than 1.16.4 or for modded versions. The guide is useful for account permissions, but it dates from 2023, so individual menus may have changed.
Minecraft’s editions and platforms matter. Java and Bedrock can have different menus, and a modded installation may not expose the controls described for an unmodified version. Test the child account after changing permissions: sign in as the child, attempt the activity you mean to restrict, and confirm that the restriction actually works.

Can I turn off chat?
You can restrict communication, but the settings are different for each platform and may depend on account age, edition, device or region. Check the actual account settings rather than assuming a single switch controls every kind of contact.
On Roblox
Review Communication under Settings > Parental controls, including Experience Chat and Direct Chat. Also inspect friends and trusted friends, because contact options and who can interact with the child are related but distinct concerns. Roblox Kids chat is off by default, while Roblox Select permits some age-restricted chat in most regions. These category descriptions do not guarantee that a particular account has the same configuration: verify the account itself.
On Minecraft
Review the Microsoft/Xbox family account’s communication permissions as well as permissions to join multiplayer games, add friends and use Realms. Check the console’s own parental controls too. Restricting chat while allowing multiplayer is not the same as preventing the child from joining online play.
Neither age checks nor labels such as “friend” or “trusted friend” replace a conversation about what information a child should keep private, how to handle unwanted contact and why they should tell a trusted adult about uncomfortable interactions. Include communication that moves away from the game in that discussion. A child can encounter invitations, usernames or links even when voice chat is disabled, so make a clear family rule about not moving to another app without permission.
Can my child play without strangers?
You can reduce contact with strangers, but do not treat either platform’s controls as a guarantee that no unfamiliar person or unsuitable material will appear. For the clearest low-contact arrangement, restrict online access until you are ready to choose and supervise a particular way to play.

Choose the level of connection deliberately
- For Minecraft, restricting multiplayer and communication permissions reduces access to online play. If you later enable multiplayer, decide who may join and review the relevant account and console permissions. A private world is not proof that player reporting does not apply.
- For Roblox, review communication, friends, visibility and private-server settings alongside allowed experiences. Selecting or blocking a game does not itself answer who can contact the child or what happens in chat.
Do not assume that all public Minecraft servers are equivalent, or that all Roblox experiences have the same social features. Ask what the child wants to play, review that experience and its settings, and set the amount of online interaction accordingly. The exact availability of controls can vary, so verify the options shown on the account and device.

Start with a short, supervised session when enabling online play. Watch how the child joins, whether strangers can invite or message them, and whether the child knows how to leave, block and report. Recheck after updates, because changing features or account age can alter which controls are shown.
What can children create in each game?
Minecraft emphasizes making and exploring block-based worlds; Roblox offers games made by other creators and a separate tool for building interactive experiences. Playing a game does not automatically teach coding, and the tools available depend on the product or edition.
Minecraft: build in a block world
Minecraft’s creative appeal is direct: children can make structures and shape a world with blocks. Minecraft Education documentation describes unlimited blocks in its Creative mode. That is a statement about Minecraft Education, not a consumer-edition study, and it should not be taken to mean every edition has identical tools or features.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor an offline activity alongside the game, LEGO Minecraft building sets can offer another way to make Minecraft-inspired creations. They are an optional physical activity, not a safety feature, and buying a set does not change either game’s moderation or online-safety settings.
Roblox: design games with Studio
Roblox Studio is for creating games and experiences, including work with scripting, rather than simply playing a Roblox experience. Roblox’s educator FAQ generally recommends Studio for ages 10 and up, describes it as free, and says it runs on PC and Mac—not phones or Chromebooks. That makes a computer a practical requirement for this creative path, and the age guidance is a general recommendation, not a statement that every child will be ready for it.
Studio can provide a route into game design and typed scripting, but Roblox play by itself is not a coding lesson. A child interested in making games may need to move from playing into Studio and learn its tools. A standard mouse can make object placement and camera control easier, but no special accessory is required by the stated Studio guidance. The Roblox educator FAQ covers its education guidance and requirements.
How do spending and screen-time controls differ?
Roblox has in-game Robux purchases and parental spending notifications or limits, as well as daily screen-time controls for eligible ages. Minecraft’s controls described here focus on multiplayer and communication permissions; the available evidence does not establish a directly comparable set of in-game spending or time controls across the two games.

Consider optional purchases separately from the initial platform choice. Before a child plays, discuss whether purchases are allowed and what to do when an experience offers an item or currency. On Roblox, inspect the spending controls shown for the account and remember that parental spending limits stop applying from age 13, according to Roblox’s overview. Do not assume a parent can retain the same spending or time authority as a child ages. Review device-store payment settings as well as Roblox’s own controls, and avoid saving a payment method on a child-accessible device unless that is intentional.
Roblox has also described physical-commerce features inside the platform with age and United States location limits. Those limits mean the feature is not a general shopping recommendation for younger children; it should be treated separately from ordinary Robux spending. No purchase is necessary to use the basic creative options described here.
Roblox’s September 2026 announcement about offline solo play describes a target of mid-2027, not a generally available feature as of October 2026. Its educator FAQ describes internet access as necessary for existing play and Studio use. Do not choose Roblox on the assumption that a child can already use it offline solo. See the September 2026 announcement and the educator FAQ.
How do moderation and reporting differ?
Roblox describes platform filtering, content review, reporting and blocking across a large collection of creator-made experiences. Because experiences are made by different creators, the practical context can vary from one game to another. Roblox explicitly says some content may slip through, so parents should teach children to leave an experience, block a user and report a problem rather than relying on an age label.
Minecraft’s published controls are more focused on account permissions for multiplayer and communication. Java Edition includes player reporting, including on private servers, but reporting is a response mechanism, not proof that a server was screened before a child joined. A private server can still contain unsuitable behavior, and a public server is not automatically identical to every other public server.
Neither system supplies a measured safety rate in the official guidance cited here. Treat a reporting button as one part of a response plan: save relevant details when appropriate, report through the platform, leave the session and tell a trusted adult.
Which should I choose for my child?
Match the platform to the child’s interests and the level of online contact you are prepared to manage. The choice is not a verdict that one company’s moderation is more effective.

- Consider Roblox if the child is motivated by trying a range of creator-made experiences or wants to explore making games later. Plan to review individual experiences and account controls.
- For either one, decide whether online play is appropriate now, configure account and device settings before enabling it, and revisit the arrangement as the child’s skills and age change.
There is no independent, like-for-like quantitative comparison establishing safety rates or moderation effectiveness for Roblox and Minecraft. Product rules, age categories and reporting features describe platform policies and tools; they are not measured safety outcomes. Your settings can limit access and contact, but neither company’s controls guarantee that all inappropriate material or behavior will be caught.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Roblox Kids mean every game is suitable for a 7-year-old?
No. Roblox Kids is a general age category for ages 5–8 in most regions, not a guarantee about every experience or the settings on an individual account. Parents should check the actual account category and review games the child wants to access.
Can my child use Roblox Studio on a Chromebook?
Roblox’s educator FAQ says Studio runs on PC and Mac, not Chromebooks or phones. It generally recommends Studio for ages 10 and up and describes it as free.
Does a private Minecraft server avoid player reports?
No. Minecraft Java Edition’s reporting tool includes reports concerning private servers. Reporting availability does not establish that a server is pre-moderated or that every report results in a particular outcome.

Can Roblox be played offline by one child?
Not as a generally available solo-offline setting as of October 2026. Roblox’s September 2026 announcement set a mid-2027 target for offline solo play; its educator FAQ says internet access is needed for existing play and Studio use.
What should I check before allowing online play?
For Roblox, verify the account category, maturity limits, allowed or blocked experiences, chat, friends, visibility, private servers, spending and screen time. For Minecraft, verify the Microsoft/Xbox family permissions for multiplayer, Realms, friends and communication, then check the console’s own controls.
Do Roblox or Minecraft parental controls guarantee safety?
No. Both platforms provide controls and reporting tools, but neither guarantees that all unsuitable content or behavior will be prevented or detected. Supervision, clear family rules and periodic setting reviews remain necessary.
What changes when a Roblox player turns 13?
According to Roblox’s parental-controls guidance, the child manages their own screen-time limits and parental spending limits stop applying. Review the account and discuss the new responsibility rather than assuming earlier limits continue unchanged.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose Minecraft for a child whose priority is contained block-building, and begin with multiplayer and communication restricted. Choose Roblox for a child drawn to many creator-made experiences or game design, while reviewing each experience and the account’s age-dependent controls. In either case, configure permissions before play, test them, teach blocking and reporting, and revisit them as the child grows.
