To stop attaching the same screenshots and specifications to every AI-assistant turn, keep the canonical files in a repository or document store that a trusted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server can expose. Configure a compatible client once, then ask it to retrieve the specific file or search for the relevant material when a task starts. This replaces repeated manual uploads when retrieval works; it does not guarantee that every assistant automatically remembers or loads every file.
How does MCP make project files reusable?
MCP is an open protocol for connecting AI assistants with external data and capabilities. Its server features include resources, prompts and tools; its client features include mechanisms such as sampling and roots. In practice, a server can expose a stable document as a resource, offer a search or metadata lookup tool, or provide a prompt for a repeatable task. The assistant can request relevant context instead of relying on you to attach the same file again.

Anthropic introduced MCP on November 25, 2024, describing it as an open standard intended to connect AI systems with data sources through a common protocol rather than a collection of separate integrations. The important distinction for this workflow is that MCP standardizes ways to expose and request context; it does not itself store your project files or decide that every file belongs in every conversation.
Think of the setup as three parts: a canonical store containing the files, an MCP server that can expose or search them, and a client that connects to that server. The quality of the result depends on how those parts are implemented and configured.

What should I put behind an MCP server?
Start with material that remains useful across multiple tasks: specifications, project decision logs, design notes and screenshots. Keep the original files in a repository, file store or document system your server can read. Treat that location as the source of truth, not an assistant conversation or a duplicate folder whose contents may drift.
Make the collection identifiable
Give files descriptive names and record their versions and dates. For example, a screenshot and its related design note should be identifiable by project, purpose and revision, rather than by a generic name such as final.png. When several versions must remain available, keep the older ones clearly marked instead of leaving the assistant to infer which is current.

The point is not to build a second documentation system: it is to make retrieval less ambiguous and help you ask for the right material. Preserve a text description or OCR output alongside an image when its visible contents matter to a task.
Choose what belongs in the reusable collection
- Stable reference material: specifications, approved requirements and project conventions are good candidates for resources.
- Frequently changing material: keep a clear indication of revision or date so a retrieval can be checked against the current source.
- Visual material: keep the original screenshot or diagram, plus a text fallback when image interpretation is unavailable.
- Sensitive material: include it only when the server, client, permissions and data handling are suitable for that information.
How do I set up a reusable MCP workflow?
Build the workflow around the question the assistant needs to answer, not around uploading an entire project archive. The steps below separate storage, retrieval and client configuration so you can diagnose problems in the right place.

- Select the canonical store. Put the current specifications, decisions, screenshots and notes in a repository or document system the server can read. Establish how you mark revisions and dates before exposing the collection.
- Expose targeted ways to retrieve material. Use resources for stable documents and narrowly scoped tools for tasks such as searching by filename, filtering by project or looking up metadata. Add prompts for repeatable work, such as summarizing a current specification or comparing a screenshot with a design note. These are different MCP server features; they do not imply that every client will invoke them automatically.
- Choose a connection type. The documented ChatGPT and Codex configuration uses
config.tomland supports local STDIO servers and Streamable HTTP servers. Select the deployment your environment supports, and verify the server and client documentation for the exact configuration fields and authentication requirements; those details can vary by implementation. - Configure the client once. ChatGPT desktop, Codex CLI and the IDE extension share this configuration. After setting up a connection, confirm that the client can reach the server and that the expected resources or tools are available. Do not assume that a successful connection means a particular file has already been retrieved.
- Request context at the start of each task. Ask for the current specification, a named screenshot or a search for a particular project decision before requesting a draft or analysis. Include a filename, version or date when you know it. This makes the retrieval request explicit and reduces the chance that the assistant works from an older file.
- Check what was retrieved. Before relying on an answer, confirm that the assistant used the intended file and revision. If the result is wrong or incomplete, narrow the request or improve the file naming and search metadata rather than re-uploading an indiscriminate bundle.
Should I use a local STDIO server or Streamable HTTP?
These are different ways for a client to connect to an MCP server, not guarantees of retrieval quality. The appropriate choice depends on where the server runs, how it reaches the files, and what security controls are available in the client and deployment.
| Decision point | Local STDIO | Streamable HTTP |
|---|---|---|
| Connection style | The client communicates with a local server process through standard input and output. | The client connects to a server over HTTP using the Streamable HTTP transport. |
| Where it can fit | Useful when the server and the files it needs can be accessed from the client machine. | Useful when the server is hosted separately and the client can reach it over the network. |
| Security questions | Review what the local process can read and which tools the client permits. | Review authentication, permissions, network exposure and what context is sent to the remote server. |
| Exact setup details | Depend on the server and client implementation; check their current configuration documentation. | Depend on the server and client implementation; check their current configuration documentation. |
For a private or on-premises server, OpenAI documents Secure MCP Tunnel as an option for connecting without exposing the server publicly. A tunnel does not remove the need to check who operates the server, what it can access, how it authenticates clients and what information it receives.

How should I handle screenshots and other images?
MCP can carry image content as base64 data with a MIME type, but whether an image reaches the model in a usable form depends on the client and model. Cursor documents returning screenshots and diagrams as chat attachments for models that support images. That behavior should not be assumed for every MCP client or every model.
Use the original and a fallback
Keep the screenshot or diagram in the canonical store and use a clear name that distinguishes it from other revisions. Alongside it, retain a concise text description, OCR output or a link to the image. The text fallback is especially useful if the connected client cannot handle image content or if a retrieval returns only text.

Ask for the image deliberately
Name the screenshot and, when relevant, its version or date. Ask the assistant to retrieve it before asking a question about layout, text or visual differences. If the assistant cannot inspect the image, switch to the text description or OCR rather than assuming that a filename alone supplied the visual context.
What should I compare before choosing an MCP setup?
Compare the parts that affect whether the right context arrives safely and consistently. The protocol alone does not settle how well a particular server indexes documents, how often it refreshes data or how a client handles returned images.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Retrieval quality and freshness | Can you locate a specific file or revision, and can you tell whether the result is current? | A connected assistant can still use the wrong or stale document if retrieval is ambiguous. |
| Deployment and transport | Does the server run locally using STDIO, or remotely using Streamable HTTP? | The deployment affects connectivity, maintenance and the security review you need to perform. |
| Authentication and approvals | Who can connect, what can the server read, and which tool calls require approval? | Tools can expose or act on data, so access should be limited to what the workflow needs. |
| Image support | Can the client pass returned image content to a model that can inspect it? | A filename or text-only result is not a substitute for visual input when the task depends on the image. |
| Client portability | Which clients support the server features and share the relevant configuration? | MCP provides a common protocol, but optional features and client behavior are implementation-dependent. |
Keep the setup narrow. A search tool that returns a small set of relevant files is often easier to verify than a broad operation that exposes a large collection. Make each tool’s purpose clear, and check the client interface for its available tool toggles and approval behavior; for example, Cursor documents these controls in its interface.
What can go wrong, and how do I fix it?
Most failures come from confusing a working connection with successful retrieval. Check the data source, server, client and model as separate parts of the path.

- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- The assistant uses an old specification: include the expected version or date in the request and make revision metadata visible to retrieval. Check that the canonical store contains the current file.
- The assistant does not mention the screenshot: explicitly request the named image before the task. Confirm that the client supports returning images and that the model can process them; otherwise provide OCR or a text description.
- A search returns the wrong document: narrow the search by project, filename, version or date. Improve names and metadata if different files are difficult to distinguish.
- The connection works but no useful context appears: check whether the client lists the intended resource or tool, whether the server can read the source, and whether the assistant has actually been asked to retrieve it.
- A workflow behaves differently across clients: verify the specific features supported by each client. Optional MCP features are not guaranteed to be implemented or honored consistently.
- A private server is not reachable: check the configured transport, authentication and network access. For private or on-premises deployments, consider the documented tunnel option rather than making the server publicly accessible.
Does MCP guarantee fewer tokens or automatic memory?
No fixed token reduction is established for this screenshot-and-specification workflow. Reusable retrieval can eliminate repeated manual uploads when the server and client can fetch the needed material, but the amount of context supplied to a model depends on what is retrieved and how the client handles it.
MCP also does not guarantee that every turn includes every previous screenshot. A client decides when tools run and whether optional requests are honored; image support varies as well. Treat retrieval as an explicit step in the task, and verify the returned file rather than treating MCP as permanent conversational memory.
How do I keep the setup secure?
Review the server as an access path to project data, not just as a convenience feature. A remote MCP server can receive sensitive context, so assess the server operator and the information sent to it before connecting confidential files.
- Limit the server’s access to the sources the workflow actually needs.
- Check authentication, user permissions and the client’s tool-approval settings.
- Understand whether a connection is local or remote, and avoid exposing a private server publicly when a private connection method is appropriate.
- Be deliberate about which files are retrieved and sent to a model, especially when a task only requires one specification or image.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is MCP a place where I store my files?
No. MCP is a protocol for connecting a client to server-provided context and capabilities; the files remain in a repository, file store or document system. The server needs access to that source to expose or search its contents.

Can MCP restore my previous chat history?
The workflow described here makes project files reusable; it does not make prior conversation history automatically available. Keep decisions that should persist in a durable project note or decision log rather than relying on a past chat.
Will my files still be available if the MCP server is offline?
The client cannot retrieve material through that server while the connection is unavailable. Keep the canonical files in their original store, and use that store’s normal access path until the server or connection is restored.

Do I need to upload files again when a specification changes?
Not if the server can read the updated canonical file, but you should request the current version and check which revision was returned. How quickly edits become visible depends on the server and its connection to the source.
