A compatible standard-definition CRT is the simplest way to get the original analog presentation and is often essential for original CRT-dependent light guns. A modern TV can also be a good choice: enable Game Mode, confirm that the TV accepts the console’s signal, and use a suitable scaler when necessary. Neither display type wins every comparison; the result depends on the whole signal path, the specific TV and the picture you want.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Platforms Checked
Compatible standard-definition CRT Original analog presentation and CRT-dependent light guns Accepts a compatible console signal without requiring a modern-TV scaler Consoles and cables supported by the CRT’s inputs Nov 2026
Modern TV, direct connection A simpler setup when the TV correctly accepts the console’s output Game Mode is the key TV setting for reducing display lag; behavior varies by model and signal Consoles with a compatible output and cable Nov 2026
Modern TV with a scaler Connecting analog consoles to a digital display with more control over output and processing Input support, 240p/480i handling, output modes and buffering vary by scaler Consoles supported by the scaler’s inputs and the TV’s accepted output modes Nov 2026

Is a CRT better for retro games?

A CRT is the more direct choice if you want the analog presentation older games were designed around or need an original light gun that relies on CRT-style light and timing. A modern TV is often more practical if it handles the console’s signal correctly and you prefer a crisp, scaled picture, easier integration or more control over image processing.

“Better” depends on what matters for your setup. A tube does not automatically make every game look ideal, and an LCD or OLED is not automatically too slow to play on. The console’s output, cable, display input and any scaler between them all affect the result. For many players, the right question is not CRT versus modern TV in the abstract; it is whether a particular display correctly handles the signals and accessories their games require.

  • Choose a compatible CRT if original light-gun support or a native analog presentation is the priority.
  • Choose a modern TV directly if the TV accepts the console’s signal and its Game Mode performance suits you.
  • Consider a scaler if the modern TV does not accept the console’s output reliably, or you want control over how it is converted and displayed.

Do modern TVs add input lag to old consoles?

They can, but there is no universal CRT-versus-modern-TV lag figure that applies to every model and setup. Input lag is only one part of controller-to-screen delay: the console, controller, scaler and display can all contribute, so measurements are meaningful only when their conditions are clear.

RTINGS’ TV testing guidance says, “The Game Mode setting is the most important setting to ensure you get the lowest input lag possible.” Its 2025 methodology gives under 15 milliseconds at 1080p and 60 Hz as a good-value benchmark. That is a threshold for interpreting TV measurements, not an average for modern TVs and not a measurement of a retro console setup. RTINGS also distinguishes TV lag from delays elsewhere in the chain. Read RTINGS’ input-lag testing guidance.

A scaler has its own behavior. RetroTINK specifies approximately 0.25 frames in Framelock mode for the 5X Pro; its listed Triple Buffering range is 0.25–1.25 frames. Those are manufacturer specifications for scaler modes, not measurements of a complete console-to-screen setup, and they do not include the TV. The older 2X Mini manual separately specifies under 100 microseconds from analog input to digital-video output. That older figure applies to the 2X Mini, not to the 2X Pro, 5X Pro or a complete setup. See the 5X Pro specifications.

To compare two setups fairly, keep the console, game and controller constant. Record the TV input, output mode and scaler mode, turn on Game Mode, and distinguish the display’s contribution from the rest of the signal chain. Do not assume that one published TV figure predicts how a different TV, console or scaler will feel.

What does 240p compatibility mean?

A TV can show a signal without processing it correctly. That distinction matters for older consoles: HD Retrovision’s compatibility guidance separates a display’s ability to receive 240p from its ability to handle the signal correctly. A picture may appear while blinking sprites disappear or other artifacts occur. A component jack alone is not proof that a TV accepts and processes every console’s 240p output properly. See HD Retrovision’s 240p compatibility information.

Older games can use unusual low-resolution video timing that analog CRTs handled directly. Modern inputs may reject or mishandle that timing, and different consoles can produce different 240p signals. Compatibility is therefore specific to the console and equipment, not just to the connector type. If you connect a console straight to a TV, check that actual console’s behavior rather than assuming another device with the same plug will work the same way.

The PS2 component cable trap

A documented example is a PS2 connected over component video: a PS1 game may switch the output to 240p, leaving a TV with no picture if it rejects that signal. The cable has not necessarily failed; the display may not support the timing the game produces. HD Retrovision advises testing the actual console and equipment, rather than treating a successful PS2 game as proof that a PS1 game will display too.

Will a component cable fix blurry retro games?

Not by itself. A compatible cable carries or preserves a signal; it does not necessarily upscale it or guarantee that the TV processes it correctly. Composite, S-Video, component and RGB are different signal paths, and the best choice depends on what the console outputs, what the display or scaler accepts, and what appearance you prefer.

For example, RetroTINK documents composite, S-Video, component and RGB inputs, along with adjustable scanlines and masks, and motion-adaptive deinterlacing for 480i on the 5X Pro. It also warns that composite limits the 5X Pro’s result. These features let a viewer alter the output and approximate aspects of a CRT image; they do not make a modern panel identical to a tube. Check the 5X Pro’s input and processing specifications.

HD Retrovision says its console component cables retain original timing rather than converting the output to HD. Its SNES component cable also has model-specific compatibility: ordinary SNES models are distinguished from mini or N64 models that require modification. Check the exact console model before choosing a cable. A cable designed for one model is not automatically right for every console in the same family. Review HD Retrovision’s cable FAQ.

Aspect ratio is another common source of an unsatisfying image. For typical 4:3-era material, check that the TV is not stretching the picture across a widescreen panel. A scaler’s output and aspect-ratio settings matter too; the TV may then apply its own display settings to the scaler’s output. Confirm both ends of the chain rather than assuming a cable or converter selects the intended shape.

How should I set up a CRT for retro consoles?

Start with the CRT’s actual inputs and the console’s available output. “CRT” does not describe one uniform set of capabilities, so confirm that the set is a suitable standard-definition model and that the cable matches its input. If a light gun is involved, treat the complete combination of gun, console, game, cable and CRT as a compatibility check.

  1. Identify the console and its exact model. Check its output and region; model differences can affect which cable is compatible.
  2. Check the CRT’s inputs. Match the console’s cable to an input the set actually has. Do not infer support from the display technology alone.
  3. Connect and verify the picture. Confirm the game displays as expected. If the image is missing or artifacts appear, check the signal path and the CRT’s supported input rather than assuming the console is faulty.
  4. For a light gun, test the intended combination. Confirm the gun, game, console, cable and CRT together. Do not assume that a different CRT or an adapter will behave identically.

HD Retrovision reports success with a SNES Super Scope, Genesis Konami Justifier and PlayStation GunCons using its cables on a Toshiba CRT and/or PVM. That is evidence for those stated combinations, not a guarantee covering every gun, cable, CRT or console revision. The original NES Zapper depends on CRT-style light and timing, as described by NESdev; an ordinary LCD or an HDMI adapter should not be assumed to make it work. See HD Retrovision’s stated light-gun compatibility examples.

How do I connect an old console to a modern TV?

First identify what the console outputs and what the TV accepts. If the direct connection works and the TV handles the signal correctly, a scaler may be unnecessary; if not, choose one whose inputs and processing match the console, then confirm that the TV accepts the scaler’s output mode.

  1. Identify the console’s output and region. Check the console model and the signal it produces, including whether the game or system may output 240p, 480i or another mode.
  2. Match the cable to the console. Confirm model compatibility and the signal type it carries. A cable does not necessarily upscale or change the console’s timing.
  3. Decide whether to connect directly or use a scaler. For a direct component connection, verify both 240p acceptance and correct processing. If using a scaler, check that it accepts the console’s input and produces a mode supported by the TV.
  4. Connect the scaler’s digital output to a supported TV input. Check the scaler and TV specifications for the output mode in use; a compatible analog input on the scaler does not guarantee that the TV accepts every digital output mode.
  5. Turn on Game Mode on the TV. This is the most important TV setting identified by RTINGS for minimizing display input lag.
  6. Set the picture shape and inspect each video mode. Check 4:3 display settings and verify 240p and 480i behavior with the games you actually play.

If a console displays one game but not another, compare the output modes rather than immediately replacing the cable. The PS2-to-PS1 example shows how switching games can change the signal and expose a TV limitation. If the TV accepts a picture but sprites or other image details behave incorrectly, investigate 240p processing as well as basic signal acceptance.

Which scaler features matter for retro games?

Choose by the signal path and games in your library, not by a broad claim that one scaler is best for everyone. Compare accepted inputs, 240p/480i/480p handling, supported output modes, 480i deinterlacing, buffering, CRT-style effects, console and region compatibility, and current availability.

OSSC V1.8 Supports a SCART/component/VGA-style path; the cited product description does not establish it as a native composite or S-Video receiver Input availability and its documented interlaced-video processing trade-off, especially for 480i-heavy libraries

The figures and feature descriptions above are manufacturer specifications or product descriptions, not independent comparative test results. RetroTINK describes the 2X Pro as a legacy line-doubler, while the 5X Pro, 6X CE and 4K Pro have different scaling and output capabilities. Check the current product information and availability before buying, because a feature list does not establish that a device is currently available or suitable for every console. 2X Pro specifications, 5X Pro specifications.

The OSSC V1.8 is an option for the supported SCART, component or VGA-style signal path, but do not treat it as a drop-in receiver for composite or S-Video without confirming the exact configuration. Its documented interlaced-video trade-off is important if a library contains a lot of 480i material. The cited product description is not a basis for treating a marketing latency phrase as a measurement of the complete setup. See the OSSC V1.8 product description.

How do I choose between direct connection and a scaler?

A direct connection is the simpler path when the TV accepts and correctly processes the console’s signal. A scaler is useful when the TV cannot accept the analog timing or when you want control over conversion, output modes or image treatment, but it adds another device whose inputs, modes and buffering must be considered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a direct connection when

  • The TV has an input matching the console cable.
  • The specific TV accepts the console’s output mode and renders it correctly.
  • You are comfortable with the image and aspect-ratio options available on the TV.

Choose a scaler when

  • The modern TV does not accept or properly process the console’s signal.
  • You need a digital output mode the TV supports.
  • You want options such as documented deinterlacing, scaling or CRT-style masks and scanlines.

In either case, check the entire chain. The console’s output, cable, scaler input, scaler processing and output mode, TV input and TV picture settings are separate compatibility points. A connector that fits is only the start of the check.

What should I check when a retro game has no picture or looks wrong?

Work from the console toward the display so that you can distinguish a signal problem from a processing problem. A failure in one game or mode may indicate a timing mismatch even when another game works.

  1. Confirm the game and console output. Identify the specific console model and whether the game may switch resolution or timing.
  2. Verify the cable and input match. Check the cable’s intended console models and the actual input used on the display or scaler.
  3. Check signal acceptance. If the TV shows “no signal,” determine whether it accepts the console’s output mode; the documented PS2 component/PS1 game case is one example of a mode change that can cause this symptom.
  4. Check processing, not just reception. If a picture appears but sprites blink out or artifacts occur, investigate whether the display processes 240p correctly.
  5. Check the scaler’s supported input and output modes. Verify that it accepts the incoming analog signal and that the TV accepts its digital output.
  6. Inspect TV settings. Turn on Game Mode to reduce display lag and check that 4:3 material is not being stretched to widescreen.

Do not treat a new cable as a universal fix. A cable can carry a compatible source signal, but it does not necessarily convert resolution, remove timing differences or guarantee the TV will handle the signal correctly.

How should I decide if a particular setup is right for me?

Start with the requirements that cannot be solved by picture preference. If you need an original CRT-dependent light gun, prioritize a suitable CRT and verify the specific hardware combination. If you do not, decide whether you value an analog CRT presentation or the flexibility and crisp scaled output of a modern display, then check the exact signal path before committing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • For light-gun games: confirm the gun’s requirements and test compatibility across the gun, game, console, cable and CRT.
  • For a modern TV you already own: try Game Mode and verify the console’s actual output mode before adding equipment.
  • For a new scaler: match its analog inputs and processing to your consoles, then match its output to the TV.
  • For mixed libraries: include both 240p and 480i behavior in the compatibility check rather than judging by a single game.
  • For image quality: decide whether you want the original analog presentation or a controllable modern rendering; scanlines and masks can imitate aspects of a CRT, not reproduce the tube itself.

There is no evidence-based universal millisecond advantage or image-quality winner for all CRTs and modern TVs. The dependable approach is to select the display around the games, accessories and signal types you actually have, then check every part of the chain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the same scaler for several old consoles?

Possibly, if each console’s output matches an input the scaler supports and the scaler handles the modes those games produce. Check the individual console models and outputs rather than assuming that consoles using similar cables have identical timing.

Does a modern TV’s component input guarantee that 240p will work?

No. A component connector shows the physical input type, not whether the TV accepts and correctly processes every 240p signal. Compatibility can vary by TV and console.

Can scanlines on an LCD make it look exactly like a CRT?

No. Scanlines and masks can approximate aspects of a CRT image, but a modern panel remains a different display technology and presentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I buy a scaler if my console already displays on my TV?

Not necessarily. If the TV accepts and correctly processes the console’s signal and you are satisfied with its picture and responsiveness, a scaler may add no necessary benefit. Consider one when you need a supported conversion, output mode or image-processing option.
