To report a copycat, scam, or misleading game listing, open that game’s Steam store page and select Report this Product—the control Valve’s support guidance describes as a blue flag on the right side of the page. Explain the specific claim, image, or other detail that concerns you. Use a different route for a scammer’s account, a community post, a copyright or trademark complaint, or a refund: those are separate processes and a product report does not guarantee removal or return your money.
Which Steam reporting route should I use?
Choose the control that matches what you want reviewed: the store listing, a user account, an individual community item, or an intellectual-property claim. A refund is separate again. Reporting the wrong target can make your description less useful because it does not identify the content or person involved.

| What happened | Route | What to focus on |
|---|---|---|
| A game’s listing appears copied, deceptive, impersonating, or otherwise problematic | Report this Product on that game’s Steam store page | Identify the listing and describe the specific material or representation you believe is wrong. |
| A Steam user scammed or impersonated someone in an interaction | Open the user’s profile, select … → Report Player, and choose the applicable violation | Describe the interaction and why it was a scam or impersonation. |
| A review, screenshot, artwork, Workshop item, or discussion post is the problem | Use that contribution’s own report control or report menu | Point to the individual community item rather than reporting the game listing. |
| Your copyrighted work is allegedly copied | Valve’s Notice of Copyright Infringement form | Identify the Valve-hosted material and your original work; submit only if you are the owner or an authorized representative. |
| Your trademark is allegedly being used | Valve’s separate Trademark Complaint Form | Identify the challenged content, trademark numbers, filing countries, and basis for the complaint. |
| You bought the game and want your money back | Make a separate refund request through Steam Support | Explain the purchase issue; a product report is not a refund request. |
Steam’s conduct rules address fraud, impersonation, malware, and intellectual-property violations. Steamworks also describes reviewing a game build against its store page. Those standards help explain why specific, verifiable observations are more useful than a broad conclusion such as “this is illegal.”
How do I report a fake game on Steam?
Use the report control on the suspect game’s own store page, then describe what is wrong with that particular listing. Valve’s guidance identifies the control as a blue flag on the right side of the page; the live product page uses the label Report this Product.

- Open the exact game listing. Check that the store page belongs to the game you mean to report, especially if another title has a similar name. Confirm the title, developer or publisher information, and the page URL before you begin.
- Find Report this Product. Select the product-page control. The displayed label is verified, but the exact reason choices inside the interactive dialog have not been confirmed, so do not rely on a particular menu label or assume a specific category will appear.
- Describe the concrete issue. Identify the text, image, claim, or other element that concerns you. For a suspected copycat, explain what material appears similar and identify the original. For misleading marketing, describe the difference between the page’s representation and what you encountered.
- Submit the report through the product control. Keep the description factual and specific. Do not claim that Valve requires particular attachments or fields; those requirements are not established here.
If you cannot immediately find the control, make sure you are on the game’s store page rather than a search result, community hub, review, or profile. Valve’s support guidance places the blue-flag control on the right side of the product page. The wording and layout can change, so rely on the visible product-page control rather than an old screenshot or a third-party tutorial.
What should I include in a product report?
Organize the information so a reviewer can understand what you are pointing to without having to guess:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- The game’s specific store listing, including its title and page address if the form allows you to provide it.
- The particular text, visual, or representation you are concerned about, quoted or described precisely.
- For a possible copy, the original work or game you are comparing it with and the specific material that appears alike.
- For a possible misrepresentation, what the listing led you to expect and what you actually encountered after opening or playing it.
- For a suspected malware issue, what happened and the antivirus detection details, if available.
- The approximate sequence of events when that context explains the concern, such as seeing one claim on the store page and then encountering a different feature in the game.
This is practical evidence-organizing advice, not a claim that Valve requires a particular format, supporting file, or proof threshold. Describe what you observed rather than asserting a conclusion you cannot establish. A short account with one clear example is generally easier to understand than a long accusation that mixes unrelated complaints.
How should I write the description?
Use neutral, testable language. Identify the statement or image, explain why it is inaccurate or appears copied, and separate what you know from what you suspect. “The store page says the game includes feature X; after purchase, I could not find that feature in the build” is more useful than “the developer is a fraud.” If you are comparing artwork, name the two works and describe the shared elements you can actually see. If you only have a similarity or an unverified alert, say exactly that.
A report is not a courtroom filing. You do not need to decide whether conduct legally meets the definition of infringement, fraud, or malware before flagging a product for review. Conversely, do not present a legal conclusion as proven merely because two titles look alike or because a security program produced an alert.
What counts as a copycat or misleading listing?
A product-page report is appropriate when the concern is the game listing itself—for example, its presentation, identity, or claims about the product. Valve’s rules identify fraud, impersonation, malware, and intellectual-property violations as prohibited conduct, and Steamworks says that a game build is reviewed in relation to its store page.

Possible warning signs can include a listing that presents itself as another creator’s game, uses identifying branding in a way that could confuse buyers, or promises content that the product does not represent accurately. A suspected copycat might reuse a recognizable title treatment, character image, capsule art, screenshots, or other material. Your report should identify the exact item and explain the comparison rather than treating a broad genre resemblance as proof.
That does not mean every resemblance or disappointing purchase is a proven violation. A similar title, visual style, game concept, or ordinary genre mechanic may raise a concern, but a report should identify the actual material or representation at issue. Likewise, a mismatch between a store-page claim and your experience is useful to describe, but it is better to state the mismatch than to label the developer a scammer as though intent had already been established.

Steamworks Content Survey documentation states: “Products on Steam must adhere to the content rules, regardless of whether it is disclosed in these surveys.” This reinforces that a disclosure does not itself excuse conduct that violates platform rules. It does not establish that Valve will reach a particular result in an individual report, and it does not create a guaranteed removal process for every complaint.
Copycat, inspiration, and infringement are not identical
Readers often use “copycat” to mean several different things. A game can resemble another in its genre, camera angle, color palette, or general concept without copying protected material. A listing can also be misleading because of a false identity or inaccurate feature claim even when no artwork is copied. Conversely, a rights holder may have a formal copyright or trademark issue that needs a dedicated complaint rather than an ordinary product flag.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
State the observable facts that distinguish these possibilities: which asset or wording is involved, where it appears on Valve’s systems, what the original work is, and how the two are connected in your comparison. Let Valve evaluate the platform issue. If you own the relevant rights, use the formal process described below as well as any ordinary product report that is appropriate.
When should I report an account or community item instead?
Use a separate report control when the problem is a person’s conduct or a particular community contribution, rather than the game’s store page. Reports about accounts and individual items address different targets from a product report.
Report a scammer’s account
If someone contacted you through Steam and attempted to scam or impersonate someone, open that account’s profile, select … → Report Player, choose the applicable violation, and briefly describe the interaction. Include the relevant behavior—such as what the person claimed, requested, or sent—without adding passwords, payment details, or other sensitive information.
Valve says profile reports contain useful information about account interactions and are preferable to sending a support ticket about a scammer. That distinction matters when the game itself is not the issue. You can report the account even if the scammer promoted a game, but also report the product separately if the store listing independently concerns you.
Report a review, screenshot, artwork, Workshop item, or post
If a specific community contribution is deceptive or abusive, report that contribution using its own gear or flag control, or the post’s report menu. Reporting the game listing instead would not identify the particular review, image, Workshop item, or discussion post you want reviewed. Describe the item’s content and why it violates the applicable rule; do not assume that criticism or an unfavorable opinion alone is a policy violation.
How do copyright and trademark complaints work?
Use Valve’s formal complaint forms when you are the rights holder or an authorized representative making a copyright or trademark claim. These processes require claimant information and declarations; they are not substitutes for a product report by an observer who simply thinks two games look alike.

Copyright: Notice of Copyright Infringement
Valve’s copyright form asks for the URL of the material hosted on Valve’s systems, a description of the allegedly copied material, information identifying the original work, claimant contact information, and a signed declaration. It warns that knowingly submitting materially false infringement claims can have consequences and that information in the notice may be shared or made public.
Before filing, make sure you can identify both the material you say is infringing and the work you own or are authorized to represent. Read the form’s declaration and warning carefully. If you are not the rights holder or an authorized representative, use the ordinary product-reporting route to describe what you observed rather than filing a formal claim on someone else’s behalf. Keep copies of the information you submit so you can refer to the same URLs and descriptions later.

Valve’s separate trademark form asks for the challenged content, trademark numbers, the countries where the marks are filed, an explanation, contact details, and a signature. The form also warns that complaint information may be shared. A trademark complaint is therefore a formal claim tied to identified marks, not simply a general objection to a game’s name or branding.
Do not use the trademark form merely because a title reminds you of another brand. Identify the registered mark information requested by the form and explain the challenged use. If you are only an observer, report the concrete store-page concern instead of signing a rights-holder declaration you cannot truthfully make.
What if antivirus software flags the game?
If antivirus software flags a Steam game and you are not confident the detection is a false positive, Valve instructs users to flag the app on its store page, describe what happened, and include the antivirus detection details. Valve also advises consulting the antivirus provider.
Record the name of the security product, the detection name or message, and what action preceded the alert. Explain whether the warning appeared during download, installation, launch, or another action. Do not upload personal files or credentials merely to substantiate a report. The useful distinction is between the observed alert and the conclusion that the game is malicious.

Valve cautions that false positives occur, so distinguish the fact that a security product raised an alert from a conclusion that the game is malicious. The detection name and the antivirus provider’s assessment can help explain the concern without overstating what is known. If the provider determines the alert was a false positive, update your description or avoid repeating the original claim as fact.
Does reporting a game get me a refund?
No. A product report asks Valve to review a listing; a refund request is a separate action through Steam Support. If you bought the game and want your money back, submit the refund request separately and explain the purchase problem truthfully. You can report a listing and request a refund, but one action does not automatically create the other.

Valve’s standard Steam-store game refund offer is for requests made within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of play. Those limits are not a guarantee that every request will be approved, and Valve says requests outside the standard rules can still be reviewed. Its Steam Refunds policy, last updated in 2024, states: “There are more details below, but even if you fall outside of the refund rules we’ve described, you can ask for a refund anyway and we’ll take a look.” The standard timing is not necessarily applicable to every purchase type or jurisdiction.
When requesting a refund, explain the purchase problem rather than claiming that filing a report entitles you to reimbursement. If the concern is a misleading description, accurately describe the difference between the advertised product and your experience. Steam Support decides the refund request under its own process.
How can I avoid a false-report scam?
A message claiming that your account was accidentally reported is not the same thing as a real report about a game. Valve describes “your account was accidentally reported” messages as a scam and says false reports are disregarded.
- Do not send your password, login credentials, recovery codes, or payment to someone who says they can fix an accidental report.
- Do not follow instructions from a purported agent who contacts you through chat to resolve the allegation.
- Do not move the conversation to another service merely because the person claims to be Valve staff.
- If a Steam account itself is attempting to scam or impersonate someone, report that account through its profile’s Report Player flow.
Keep the distinction clear: report a suspect game through its store page, report a user through that user’s profile, and make any refund request separately through Steam Support. A request for credentials or money is a warning sign, not a normal step in the product-report process.
What should I expect after submitting a report?
Valve’s public product page confirms the reporting control, but the exact reason options in its interactive report dialog and what notification, if any, follows submission have not been verified. The official guidance also does not establish a response deadline, a mandatory evidence list, a report-to-removal rate, or a guaranteed case-status page.
Do not treat a report as a promise that the game will be removed, that the developer will be contacted, or that you will receive a case-status update. Save the product URL and a copy of your factual description for your own records. Avoid filing repeated reports that add no new information; if the concern changes, use the route that matches the new target, such as an account or individual community item.
Recommended Free Tools
Valve may review the listing against its content rules and the relationship between the store page and the game build, but the public materials do not specify the outcome of any particular report. The safest expectation is that you have submitted information for moderation review, not that a particular action will follow on a published schedule.
A quick decision checklist
- Identify the target. Is it the game’s store page, a user account, a community contribution, or material you own?
- Choose the matching route. Use Report this Product for the listing, Report Player for an account, the item’s own control for community content, and Valve’s formal forms for rights-holder claims.
- Write observations. Name the exact claim, image, interaction, or detection and explain the discrepancy or comparison.
- Avoid overstatement. Similarity, disappointment, or an antivirus alert is not automatically proof of infringement, fraud, or malware.
- Separate money matters. Request a refund through Steam Support; do not expect a product report to return payment.
- Protect your account. Ignore messages asking for credentials or payment to fix an alleged accidental report.

Can I see whether Steam acted on my report?
A specific case-status notification or tracking process is not established by the public product-page information. Keep any submission confirmation you receive, but do not assume one will be provided.
Can someone get my Steam account details by claiming I was reported?
A claim that your account was accidentally reported is a scam warning sign, not a reason to share credentials. Valve says such false reports are disregarded; do not pay or provide login information to a purported helper.

Open the suspect game’s store page and look on the right side for the blue-flag control Valve describes. The live page labels it Report this Product; the exact dialog choices may vary or may not be publicly documented.
Can I report a game if I only think it looks similar to another game?
Yes, you can describe a concrete store-page concern, but explain the specific title, image, wording, or claim and identify the comparison. Similarity alone does not establish copyright or trademark infringement.
Someone copied my game’s artwork. Which form should I use?
If you own the artwork or represent its owner, review Valve’s Notice of Copyright Infringement form. It requests the Valve-hosted URL, a description of the material, information about the original work, contact details, and a signed declaration, with warnings about false claims and information sharing.
Can I report a scammer and the game they promoted?
Yes. Report the person through the profile’s … → Report Player flow, and report the game separately through Report this Product if the listing itself is misleading or otherwise problematic.
I bought the wrong game—can I get a refund after reporting it?
Submit a separate Steam Support refund request. Valve’s standard offer for Steam-store games is within 14 days of purchase and under two hours of play, while requests outside those limits may still be reviewed.
The Bottom Line
Match the report to the target: Report this Product for a game listing, Report Player for an account, and the item’s own control for community content. Rights holders should use Valve’s copyright or trademark forms, and buyers must request refunds separately through Steam Support. Describe specific observations, avoid unverified legal or malware conclusions, and never give credentials or money to someone claiming they can fix an accidental report.
