A reliable LLM-as-a-judge rubric makes the judgment target explicit enough that two qualified reviewers would usually reach the same decision. Define the task and acceptable evidence, split quality into independent dimensions, describe observable pass and score boundaries, and let the grader abstain when evidence is missing. Use deterministic checks for facts that can be verified exactly, model grading for genuine nuance, and human judgments to calibrate and audit the system.

Reliability is not a property of a prompt alone. It depends on the task, rubric, grader, reference material, and monitoring process. The workflow below shows how to design each part, test agreement with experts, diagnose disagreements, and keep evaluations useful as models and workloads change.

What makes an LLM-as-a-judge rubric reliable?

Reliability means that competent evaluators apply the same standard to the same output, not that a model produces a confident-looking number. Anthropic’s evaluation guidance recommends tasks for which two domain experts would independently reach the same pass/fail verdict. If experts disagree because the task or success condition is ambiguous, an automated judge will measure that ambiguity rather than model quality. Anthropic’s evaluation-design guidance describes this as a prerequisite for trustworthy grading.

A dependable rubric therefore makes five things explicit:

#1 Best Overall
Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter | 4Pack Type C Female to A Male Cable Converter for Apple Duo 17 16 15 14 Plus,iWatch Watch 12 11 10,iPad 9 8 Air,Airpods 5 4
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Target: the task, output, context, and definition of success.
  • Evidence: the passages, files, tool state, or external results the grader may use.
  • Dimensions: separate qualities that can fail independently.
  • Decision rules: observable boundaries for each score or label.
  • Uncertainty handling: an “Unknown” or abstention path when the evidence cannot support a decision.

Do not use adjectives such as “excellent,” “helpful,” or “complete” without defining what an evaluator can observe. A rubric can be short and still be precise; adding prose that does not change a decision boundary only makes interpretation harder.

How do I define the evaluation target before writing criteria?

Start with the exact behavior you want to measure. Write down the input available to the system, the output it must produce, any tools or state changes involved, and what a successful result looks like to the user or downstream process.

  1. State the task. Use an imperative description such as “answer the customer’s question using the supplied policy” or “return a valid migration plan for the specified database.” Include role, audience, and constraints.
  2. List the evidence. Identify which parts of the output, source documents, tool results, or external state may justify a grade. Tell the judge not to infer facts that are not present.
  3. Translate requirements into observations. Replace “be accurate” with checks such as “every numerical claim matches the reference table” or “the requested file is created in the target directory.”
  4. Define the unit of judgment. Decide whether one grade covers a complete response, a step, a tool call, or a claim. Mixing units produces unstable scores.
  5. Test expert agreement. Give representative cases to at least two qualified reviewers without coaching them toward a desired result. Resolve disagreements in the task specification before tuning the judge.

If success depends on an unstated expectation, add that expectation to the task or remove the criterion. A judge cannot reliably grade a rule that humans cannot articulate.

How should I split a broad quality judgment into dimensions?

Use distinct dimensions when qualities can vary independently. A single “overall quality” score hides whether an answer failed because it was factually wrong, incomplete, poorly sourced, or inefficient.

For a research answer, useful dimensions include factual accuracy, citation accuracy, completeness, source quality, and tool efficiency. These dimensions are an example, not a universal checklist: derive yours from the actual task. Anthropic describes this style of rubric in its account of a multi-agent research system: the engineering article reports experimenting with multiple judges and finding, in that system, that one call with one prompt produced dimension scores and a pass/fail grade most consistent with human judgments. That case-specific result does not establish that one judge is always best.

Keep dimensions independent

“Citation accuracy” asks whether a cited source supports the associated claim. “Source quality” asks whether the source is authoritative and appropriate. A response can cite a high-quality source incorrectly, or cite a low-quality source accurately; combining those questions loses useful diagnostic information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a manageable set

Every dimension needs its own evidence and boundaries. If reviewers cannot explain why two dimensions differ, merge them. If one dimension routinely receives contradictory comments, split it into the underlying decisions. Avoid adding a dimension merely because it sounds desirable.

Decide whether a failure is fatal

Some tasks require all-or-nothing conditions, such as valid JSON or a safe database migration. Others allow trade-offs. Mark fatal criteria explicitly instead of allowing a judge to hide them inside an average score.

What should each rubric criterion contain?

Write each criterion as a compact decision contract. The following template gives a judge enough information to score without guessing:

  • Dimension: the quality being assessed.
  • Evidence: the output passage, source, or state that may support the decision.
  • Pass condition: what must be true.
  • Fail condition: what disqualifies the result.
  • Insufficient evidence: when to return “Unknown” or abstain.
  • Score scale: observable boundaries for each level, if a numeric score is needed.
  • Calibration set: examples independently judged by humans.

For example, replace “the explanation is complete” with a rule such as: “Pass when the response addresses all three requested causes and gives one actionable remedy for each; fail when any requested cause is omitted; return Unknown when the reference list does not establish which causes are required.” The example makes the boundary visible without prescribing one wording.

Use score levels that describe behavior

A four-level scale can distinguish major omissions from minor defects without implying false precision:

Score Observable meaning
3 All required elements are present and supported; no material error affects the result.
2 The central result is usable, but one non-fatal omission or minor unsupported detail remains.
1 Some relevant work is present, but a material error or multiple omissions require correction.
0 The response is missing, contradicts the evidence, or fails the task’s essential condition.

Use these levels only when your task has comparable gradations. For a binary safety gate, pass/fail plus an Unknown state may be more faithful than averaging scores. Examples should clarify boundaries, not accidentally make one phrase or solution the only accepted answer.

Which grader should I use for each criterion?

Choose the least subjective grader that can correctly evaluate the condition. A single evaluation can combine several grader types; forcing every criterion through an LLM adds cost and variability where a direct check would be stronger.

Grader Best fit Strengths Risks and controls
Deterministic code Exact values, required fields, schemas, state changes, test results Fast, reproducible, inexpensive, easy to rerun Cannot judge open-ended meaning; allow valid alternative representations where appropriate
Model-based Nuanced language, explanations, plans, and varied valid answers Handles semantic variation and contextual trade-offs Nondeterministic and sensitive to prompt, context, and model changes; calibrate against experts and inspect transcripts
Human Reference judgments, subjective or high-consequence decisions, audits Can resolve ambiguity and spot unexpected failure modes Slower and more expensive; use clear instructions and measure reviewer agreement
Hybrid Tasks mixing hard requirements and nuance Uses code for objective gates and models or people for interpretation More orchestration; define precedence when signals disagree

OpenAI’s Graders API reference documents configurable forms including score-model, label-model, text-similarity, string-check, and multi graders. Interfaces and supported configuration can change, so verify implementation details in the current reference before building production code.

Use deterministic checks first

Validate syntax, required keys, numeric tolerances, permissions, test outcomes, and state transitions with code. A model judge should not be asked whether a JSON document parses or whether a checksum matches when a direct assertion can answer those questions exactly.

Reserve model scoring for genuine nuance

Give the model the task, rubric, permitted evidence, and output format. Tell it to cite the specific passage supporting its decision and to return Unknown when the supplied evidence is insufficient. Keep judge temperature and model version under configuration control where the platform permits it, and record them with every grade.

Use people to establish the reference

Humans are not merely a last resort. Their judgments define whether a rubric is measuring the intended behavior and reveal cases the automated grader systematically misunderstands. For consequential decisions, retain a human review path even after automated agreement improves.

How do I calibrate an LLM judge against human judgments?

Calibration is an empirical comparison, not a claim that the judge “sounds reasonable.” Build a representative set of outputs covering ordinary cases, borderline cases, known failures, and valid alternative approaches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Have qualified reviewers grade independently. Provide the same task, evidence, and rubric that the model judge will receive. Record their score, rationale, and any request for clarification.
  2. Run the model judge on the identical cases. Preserve the complete input, output, judge prompt, model identifier, and grade.
  3. Compare decisions and rationales. Look beyond aggregate agreement. Identify which dimensions diverge and whether disagreements cluster by task type, writing style, language, or answer strategy.
  4. Classify each disagreement. It may reveal a vague criterion, missing context, an incorrect reference, a human interpretation difference, or a genuine model error.
  5. Revise and repeat. Change the task, evidence, rubric, or grader only when the diagnosis supports that change. Regrade the calibration set so an apparent improvement is not a trade-off elsewhere.

Anthropic advises close calibration with human experts and transcript review, followed by occasional human review after a system becomes robust. Its guidance states that “LLM-as-judge graders should be closely calibrated with human experts to gain confidence that there is little divergence between the human grading and model grading.” Read the full guidance.

A 2022 Anthropic study of model-written evaluations reported 90–100% agreement between crowdworkers and the generated labels across that study’s examples, and generated 154 datasets. Those figures describe that particular study, not a general reliability benchmark or a target every evaluation must meet. See the study report.

How should the judge handle missing or conflicting evidence?

Make abstention an explicit outcome. “Unknown” is preferable to a guessed score when the output omits a required artifact, the reference is incomplete, or two supplied sources conflict.

  • Define exactly when Unknown is allowed; otherwise judges may use it to avoid difficult decisions.
  • Require a short reason and identify the missing or contradictory evidence.
  • Route Unknown cases to a human queue or a separate data-quality process.
  • Track the Unknown rate by task version and data source. A sudden increase can indicate a broken pipeline rather than poorer model behavior.

Do not convert Unknown to fail automatically unless the product requirement explicitly treats lack of evidence as failure. Keep the original state so later analysis can distinguish model errors from evaluation-data defects.

How do I audit transcripts and detect unfair scoring?

A score alone cannot show whether a failure was real. Sample complete trials: the original input, context, model output, tool calls, judge instructions, evidence supplied to the judge, and final grade.

Look for ambiguity

Check whether the task permits multiple valid approaches and whether the rubric accidentally requires one tool sequence, wording, or formatting style. Judge the outcome when different paths legitimately achieve the goal.

Check context and references

Confirm that the judge received every document needed to verify the claim, that citations point to the intended passages, and that reference answers are current. A missing source can make a correct answer appear unsupported.

Test for loopholes

Try outputs that exploit superficial checks: copying a required phrase without doing the work, placing an answer in an ignored field, or satisfying a length rule with irrelevant text. Add a check only when it measures the desired behavior rather than incidental formatting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate grader bugs from model failures

When a transcript shows a valid answer receiving a failing grade, label it as an evaluation defect and fix the rubric, prompt, evidence pipeline, or parser. Do not “correct” the model or publish a capability regression until the grading path has been verified.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How do I maintain a rubric as models and tasks change?

Reliability is an ongoing property. Keep capability evaluations that probe difficult or emerging behaviors separate from regression evaluations that protect previously reliable behavior.

  1. Write the task contract: inputs, output, context, tools, constraints, and user-visible success.
  2. List observable requirements: identify evidence for every requirement and mark fatal conditions.
  3. Group requirements into independent dimensions: avoid a vague overall impression.
  4. Draft pass, fail, score, and Unknown rules: include boundaries and permitted evidence.
  5. Assign a grader per criterion: code where exact checks work, model where nuance is unavoidable, and human review for references and high-consequence judgments.
  6. Create a calibration set: include normal, borderline, adversarial, and alternative-valid outputs.
  7. Run independent human grading: capture rationales and unresolved ambiguity.
  8. Run the automated pipeline: log every input, output, judge configuration, and decision.
  9. Inspect disagreements: fix the diagnosed cause, then rerun the full calibration set.
  10. Launch with monitoring: sample transcripts, track Unknowns and dimension-level drift, and schedule recalibration.

What are the most common rubric-writing mistakes?

  • One overall score: unrelated failures cancel each other out. Split dimensions and retain the component scores.
  • Adjective-only criteria: “clear” or “thorough” has no stable boundary. State what an evaluator must observe.
  • Hidden reference answers: a judge cannot verify claims without the relevant evidence. Supply it or permit Unknown.
  • Exact-path enforcement: rejecting valid alternative tool sequences measures conformity, not task success.
  • Overly narrow examples: requiring one phrase or solution penalizes legitimate variation. Use examples to mark boundaries.
  • No human baseline: a model judge can agree with itself while disagreeing with experts. Establish reference judgments.
  • Ignoring evaluator failures: a failing score may come from a parser, stale source, or grading prompt. Audit the whole transcript.
  • Permanent rubrics: model capabilities, tools, and task populations change. Version and recalibrate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an LLM judge grade its own model’s answers?

It can, but self-judging introduces risks such as shared blind spots and preference for familiar wording. Validate the judge against independent human references and, where stakes are high, use a separately configured model or human review for disputed cases.

Should I ask the judge for a chain-of-thought explanation?

Require concise, auditable evidence citations and a decision rationale instead of requesting private chain-of-thought. The reviewer needs to see which output passage or external state supports the grade, not unrestricted hidden reasoning.

How many examples belong in a calibration set?

There is no universal count. Include enough ordinary, borderline, adversarial, and alternative-valid cases to cover every criterion, then expand the set whenever transcript audits reveal a new failure mode or task segment.

What should I do when human reviewers disagree with one another?

Treat the disagreement as evidence that the task, reference material, or rubric may be underspecified. Facilitate a documented adjudication, revise the decision boundary if needed, and retain the original disagreement as a test case for the next calibration run.
