If a multicolor print is producing a huge purge tower, the fastest fix is usually to tune the slicer’s transition volumes rather than accept the default. In PrusaSlicer, adjust the values under Purging volumes; in OrcaSlicer, tune Prime volume, tower width, and the multimaterial purge destinations. Then redirect safe purge into infill or a sacrificial wipe object. Measure the purge from your own sliced file or weigh the waste before and after, because there is no universal annual-savings figure. A dark-to-light transition can require substantially more purge than the reverse, so reducing every transition by the same percentage can leave pale colors contaminated or cause weak first layers after a tool change.
What does a purge or wipe tower do?
A purge tower receives molten filament during a color or tool change. The printer unloads the old material, loads the next one, and extrudes enough of the new material to stabilize its color and flow before returning to the model. The tower is therefore a process-control feature, not decorative geometry.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Without enough purge, traces of the previous color can appear in the next object region, and the first line after a change may be under-extruded. A tower also provides a predictable place for the nozzle to wipe, which can prevent a contaminated nozzle from marking the model. The trade-off is that every transition adds material, movements and time that do not become part of the finished part.
Why do some color changes need far more purge than others?
Purge demand depends on the direction of the transition. Dark pigment left in a nozzle is more visible when the next filament is white or another light color, so a dark-to-light change generally needs more cleaning than a light-to-dark change.

Prusa Research illustrates the difference with example values: an unload volume of 80 mm³ plus a load volume of 70 mm³ for black-to-white (150 mm³ total), versus 20 mm³ unload plus 30 mm³ load for white-to-black (50 mm³ total). These are documentation examples, not universal settings; the right values vary with hotend geometry, filament, temperature, nozzle size and the contamination level you can accept.

Because a multicolor job can contain dozens or hundreds of directional changes, a single oversized value in the transition matrix can dominate the tower. Treat each direction separately instead of assuming that one global number is efficient.
How can I measure my printer’s actual purge waste?
Measure first so a smaller tower represents a real improvement rather than a hidden quality problem. Use a representative model containing the colors, layer changes and number of tools you normally print.
- Slice the model with your current profile and record the slicer’s purge-tower or waste estimate, if shown.
- Print the job, let the tower and purge strands cool, and weigh the waste separately from the finished model. A small kitchen scale with gram resolution is adequate for comparing runs; use the same procedure every time.
- Record the number and order of color changes, the filament types and colors, nozzle diameter, layer height and temperatures. Those details explain why a setting that works for one job may fail on another.
- Keep the sliced file or a screenshot of its purge settings. It gives you a baseline for an A/B comparison after each change.
Comparing two runs from the same model is more useful than comparing different models. If a job has very few transitions, even a large percentage reduction may save little material; a frequently printed, high-transition model can make the same adjustment worthwhile.
How do I reduce purge waste in PrusaSlicer?
PrusaSlicer provides global, per-filament and per-transition controls. Open the printer’s multimaterial settings and select Purging volumes in the right panel; Prusa Research states that “The purge amount can be set by clicking on the Purging volumes… button in the right panel.”
1. Find the transitions that consume the most
Inspect the matrix rather than lowering every cell immediately. Start with transitions that occur often or have unusually high values, especially dark-to-light pairs that are not visually sensitive in your particular model. Leave a conservative value for a light color that must remain clean until you have test evidence.

2. Make small reductions
Lower the selected unload, load or total transition value in small increments, then re-slice the same model. A modest change makes it easier to identify the point at which a color boundary becomes dirty or the first extrusion after a change becomes thin. Large one-step cuts can save material temporarily but make the failure mode difficult to diagnose.
3. Separate a slicer setting from a hardware fault
If you see black specks or a tinted line only immediately after a change, the purge value is a likely suspect. If filament is actually scorched, smoking or repeatedly swelling in the nozzle, stop the print and investigate temperature, heat-break cooling and obstruction; purge tuning cannot correct a thermal or mechanical fault.
4. Re-slice and inspect the result
Look at the preview for tower size and stability, then inspect the first model line after each color change. Check light surfaces, thin walls and small details, where contamination is easiest to notice. Keep a setting only when the color boundary, extrusion and tower adhesion remain acceptable.
What does Prime volume do in OrcaSlicer?
In OrcaSlicer, Prime volume controls how much fresh material is extruded to establish flow after a tool or filament change. OrcaSlicer documents a 45 mm³ default for the applicable Type 2 tower mode; that number is a reference for that mode, not a guarantee for every machine or material.

OrcaSlicer also exposes tower width. Increasing width uses more filament per layer but can make the tower shorter, while reducing width tends to make a taller tower that may be less stable. Choose width and prime volume together: a compact, stable tower is preferable to a narrow tower that wobbles or a wide tower that consumes material without improving purge quality.
Use OrcaSlicer’s multimaterial purge destinations to send suitable purge to infill or an auxiliary object, but retain the minimum purge that Orca requires at the tower before diverting material. The documentation notes that a minimum purge is still sent to the tower before purging into infill or a sacrificial object.

Can I purge into infill instead of printing a tower?
Often, yes. PrusaSlicer’s Wipe into this object’s infill option can place purge inside the part, and Prusa Research says that “wipe to infill can greatly reduce the amount of wasted material.” This works when the infill is dense enough to absorb the contaminated filament and the model’s appearance does not depend on perfectly clean internal regions.
When wipe into infill is appropriate
- The model has substantial infill below the affected layers.
- The purge color is darker than the visible walls but cannot be seen through them.
- The part is functional, opaque and tolerant of internal color mixing.
- There is enough interior space that purge lines will not push against thin walls.
When to use a sacrificial wipe object
Use a separate wipe object when dark purge could show through light or thin walls, when the main model has sparse infill, or when its internal strength and appearance are critical. The auxiliary object consumes some filament, but it gives you a controlled place for contamination and avoids embedding unpredictable color in the finished part.
Increasing the number of perimeters can hide dark purge in a light model, but it also adds material and print time. Treat that as a geometry decision, not a free replacement for reducing purge.
How should I validate a lower purge setting?
Validation needs both a visual check and a mechanical one. A tower that looks smaller in the preview is not a success if it produces a dirty color boundary, a weak line or a detached tower.
- Re-slice the same representative model after each change.
- Confirm that the preview still shows a stable tower or a deliberate wipe destination.
- Watch the first layer or first perimeter printed after every tool change.
- Inspect light-color areas for tinting, speckles and translucent streaks.
- Check tower adhesion and whether the nozzle collides with a leaning tower.
- Weigh the waste and compare it with the baseline, then repeat the test on a second model with a different color order.
Keep a setting as a profile only after it survives the color combinations you actually use. A profile optimized for blue-to-white may not be suitable for black-to-yellow, even if both jobs use the same printer and nozzle.
How much filament and money can a smaller tower save?
Calculate savings from your own measurements rather than using a generic annual claim. The required inputs are the old purge mass, the new purge mass, prints per year and your filament price per gram.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Annual savings = (old purge grams − new purge grams) × prints per year × filament price per gram.
For example, if a measured change removes 18 grams of purge from a job printed 30 times a year, multiply 18 by 30 and then by the price per gram you actually pay. The result is specific to that model and schedule; it should not be presented as a universal “hundreds of dollars” saving. Include failed tests and any extra wipe-object material in the accounting, otherwise the calculation overstates the benefit.
Material cost is only one part of the result. A smaller tower can shorten print time and reduce plastic waste, while a failed multicolor surface can cost more than the filament saved. Choose the lowest setting that meets your visual and structural requirements.
Which purge strategy fits my model?
| Strategy | Color contamination risk | Material use | Time and stability | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Conservative full purge tower | Lowest when transitions are correctly tuned | Highest | Longest; generally stable | Light surfaces, frequent dark-to-light changes, sparse infill |
| Reduced transition volumes | Depends on each matrix value | Lower than the baseline | Shorter tower or fewer purge lines | Users willing to test each dominant transition |
| Wipe into model infill | Hidden contamination may remain inside the part | Often much lower tower waste | Can reduce tower size; depends on infill coverage | Opaque, well-infilled functional parts |
| Wipe into sacrificial object | Low on the main model; contamination is isolated | Uses the auxiliary object’s material | Adds an object but can stabilize quality | Thin walls, light colors, sparse or absent infill |
| Wider OrcaSlicer tower | Controlled by prime and transition settings | More filament per layer | Shorter tower, potentially better stability | When a narrow tower is tall or unstable |
What problems appear after reducing purge, and how do I fix them?
Light filament is still tinted
Raise the value for the specific dark-to-light transition rather than restoring every matrix entry. Verify that the contamination occurs at the change itself and not because the filament is damp, the nozzle is dirty or the temperature is too low for the new material.
The first line after a change is thin
Increase the prime or load portion for that transition in small steps. A tower can look adequate while the nozzle still lacks fully pressurized, uniform flow at the moment it returns to the model.
The tower wobbles or the nozzle hits it
Check adhesion and tower width. In OrcaSlicer, increasing width consumes more material but can reduce height, which may improve stability. In either slicer, a slightly larger stable tower is safer than a narrow tower that falls into the print.

Wipe lines are visible on the part
Move the purge to a sacrificial object or increase the model’s perimeters if that is acceptable for its design. Do not hide dark purge in infill when the wall is thin enough for the color to show through.
The tower is large despite low per-transition numbers
Count the changes in the layer plan. A modest purge repeated many times can still create a large tower, especially with several tools. Reducing unnecessary color changes in the model or consolidating identical adjacent tool calls may save more than cutting an already small transition value.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat is a practical tuning checklist?
- Start with a representative multicolor file and record purge mass.
- Identify the most frequent and most contamination-sensitive transitions.
- Adjust PrusaSlicer’s Purging volumes or OrcaSlicer’s Prime volume, tower width and purge destinations.
- Change one group of related values at a time and re-slice.
- Use wipe into infill only when hidden contamination is safe; otherwise choose a sacrificial wipe object.
- Inspect light-color boundaries, first post-change lines and tower adhesion.
- Weigh the new waste and calculate savings with your actual print schedule and filament price.
- Save the tested profile with the filament and color combination identified.
The practical goal is not the smallest possible tower. It is the smallest purge volume that keeps extrusion stable, color boundaries clean and the tower or wipe object reliable for the jobs you print.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know whether a purge tower is actually too large?
Compare its measured waste with the number of color changes in the same sliced file. A tower that looks large may be justified by many transitions, while a few oversized matrix values can make a simple job wasteful; the slice estimate and a weighed baseline reveal which case you have.
Can one purge setting work for every filament color pair?
Not reliably. Purge is directional, so the amount needed for black-to-white can differ from white-to-black, and opaque colors tolerate contamination differently from light colors. Keep transition-specific values where your slicer supports them.
Will lowering prime volume cause a clogged nozzle?
A lower setting primarily risks incomplete color clearing or an under-pressurized first line, not a guaranteed clog. Test in small increments and restore the previous value if flow becomes inconsistent; investigate real scorching or repeated blockage as a separate temperature or hardware problem.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I include wipe-object filament in my savings calculation?
Yes. Subtract the total waste from the old setup, then include any new auxiliary-object material in the new setup before multiplying by print frequency and price per gram. Otherwise an apparent tower reduction can exaggerate the actual annual saving.
