RedditDownloader can still archive media from subreddit listings through a fork that replaces its broken Pushshift and direct-access source layer with SylviaSubredditSource. It does not restore every old way of finding posts: saved posts, upvoted lists, multireddits, and a user’s own posts still require authenticated Reddit/PRAW access, and the available listing window is only about 1,000 posts.
The distinction matters: the repair changes how subreddit posts enter the program, while keeping its existing filtering, deduplication, download, naming, and WebUI pipeline. It is a way to resume subreddit media archiving without registering a Reddit app, not a way to recover Pushshift’s deep historical search.

What broke in RedditDownloader?
RedditDownloader (RMD) is an open-source Reddit archiver with roughly 1,200 GitHub stars, a figure reported by hideki in 2026. Its original design combined ways to find Reddit content with a separate pipeline for processing posts and downloading media. The source layer became the weak point after Reddit’s access changes; much of the work that happened after a post was found remained usable.
The source layer stopped supplying posts
RMD’s original sources depended on Pushshift or direct access to Reddit. Pushshift became unavailable in July 2023, according to the account of the fork. Reddit also restricted direct API access and made OAuth application registration slower and stricter. In practice, direct requests could return HTTP 429 rate-limit responses or block pages when an IP was flagged.

That meant a downloader could still know how to filter a submission, recognize a supported media URL, and save a file, yet fail before those operations because it could not reliably retrieve the submissions to process. Replacing that first step—not rewriting the entire archiver—is the central repair.
What RMD already handled
The project’s reported capabilities included scanning subreddits, users, saved and upvoted lists, and multireddits; extracting content from individual post URLs; and handling self-post text and comments. Its downstream features included filters, image-hash duplicate detection, SQLite state storage, resume support, a local WebUI, and media handlers for Reddit-hosted content, Imgur, Gfycat, and video supported by yt-dlp. These are project capabilities reported in the source account, not a guarantee that every handler works with every current post or host.

The fork adds SylviaSubredditSource, which retrieves subreddit listings from Sylvia API and adapts the returned posts to RMD’s existing data flow. The adapter is important: it lets the old processing pipeline consume submissions in the structure it already expects instead of replacing the downloader’s filters and file-handling stages.
From listing to downloaded file
- Request a subreddit listing. The source calls
GET /v1/reddit/r/{subreddit}/{order}, with sort, time, and limit parameters. - Adapt the post data. Sylvia returns Reddit-shaped fields such as
id,title,selftext,url,score,num_comments,over_18, andcreated_utc. The fork wraps these records asSubmissionobjects so RMD’s existing Pushshift parsing path can produce the familiarRedditElementstructure. - Continue through RMD. Once a post has entered that structure, the existing filtering, duplicate detection, naming, state tracking, and download logic can handle it. Sylvia supplies listings; the fork does not replace the local archiving pipeline.
- Fetch the media itself. Media binaries still come from Reddit’s CDN when the post points there. The listing API and the media host are separate parts of the process.
Pagination uses an after cursor. The reported listing window is roughly the same 1,000-post limit Reddit serves, so cursor-based pagination helps move through the available listing but does not turn it into an unlimited historical archive.

How do I configure the Sylvia subreddit source?
The reported setup requires a Sylvia API key, then adding a “Sylvia Subreddit” source in the WebUI or settings file. Unlike the old direct Reddit access route, this route does not require Reddit app registration.
- Provide the API key to the process. For a shell session, the documented environment-variable form is:
export SYLVIA_API_KEY=syl_... - Add the source. In the WebUI or settings file, configure a source named “Sylvia Subreddit.” The available account does not specify a complete settings-file schema, so use the fork’s own configuration interface or documentation for the precise fields rather than guessing a format.
- Choose the subreddit listing to process. The source uses subreddit, order, sort/time, and limit parameters; the specific controls exposed depend on the fork’s interface.
- Run a small check before relying on a large archive. Confirm that posts are being returned and that the desired media URLs make it through filtering and downloading. Listing success alone does not prove a CDN file can be fetched.
Keep the key available to the process that runs RMD. The reported setup documents the environment variable but does not establish Sylvia API pricing, quotas, or key-management options, so check the API provider’s current terms before planning repeated or large-scale use.
What can the fork still download, and what remains unavailable?
The fork restores subreddit listing as a route into RMD’s media pipeline; it does not remove the boundaries imposed by authentication, listing depth, or media hosting. Treat each boundary separately when diagnosing a failed archive.
Subreddit posts
Subreddit listings are the source the Sylvia adapter is intended to restore. Posts that pass RMD’s filters and contain supported media links can proceed through its existing handlers. A self-post without a direct media link may be rejected by URL filtering rather than downloaded as a file.

Saved, upvoted, user, and multireddit sources
Saved posts, upvoted lists, multireddits, and a user’s own posts still require authenticated Reddit/PRAW access. Sylvia’s subreddit listing route is not a replacement for those account-specific feeds. If those sources are essential, the Sylvia-only route does not remove the need for an authenticated source.
Older posts beyond the listing window
Deep historical retrieval is not restored. The stated limit is a listing window of about 1,000 posts from Reddit and Sylvia; the fork does not recreate Pushshift-era access to “every post ever made.” A user who needs a complete historical corpus should not assume that repeated cursor requests will reach arbitrarily far back.
Media delivery
The source provides post listings, but Reddit’s CDN still serves Reddit-hosted media. The author-reported downloads succeeded, though future CDN blocking could require a proxy. A listing that works therefore does not guarantee that every binary remains reachable.
What verification has been reported?
The fork’s author reports two checks, which are useful as evidence of a working path but are not an independent benchmark or a promise of universal reliability.

test_sylvia.pyreportedly pulls real posts from r/aww and checks media extraction and URL filtering.test_download.pyreportedly exercises the realdirect_linkhandler end to end.- In the author’s five-post trial, four files were written and one self-post without a direct media link was rejected. The saved files ranged from 160 KB to 1.3 MB.
The rejected post illustrates a useful distinction: a source can retrieve a post successfully while the downloader declines it because it does not expose a direct media link accepted by the relevant handler or filter. The reported results establish a small successful example, not coverage of all subreddits, media hosts, or future CDN behavior.
Why is this a fork rather than a change to the original?
The original repository is archived, and its maintainer invited others to continue the project through forks. ShadowMoose wrote: “Other users are welcome to fork the project and continue onward, if anybody is willing to continue in spite of the Admin actions pushing against them.” The repair was consequently implemented as a fork rather than as a pull request to an actively maintained original repository.

For someone deciding whether this approach fits, the practical comparison points are the source types available without Reddit OAuth, authenticated-feed support, historical depth, media-host coverage and CDN reliability, local filtering and resume features, and any API-key or operating costs. The reported information establishes the Sylvia route’s role and the remaining limits, but does not provide a measured side-by-side comparison with other archivers.

- No subreddit posts arrive: Check that the Sylvia source is configured and that the process can read
SYLVIA_API_KEY. The account does not provide specific error codes for invalid keys or provider outages. - Posts arrive, but no file is saved: Inspect filtering and whether the post URL exposes a direct link handled by the downloader. A retrieved self-post may not contain downloadable media.
- Some media links work and others do not: The existing pipeline has host-specific handlers, and Reddit-hosted binaries depend on the CDN. Success for one post does not establish that every host or file is reachable.
- Older results stop appearing: The roughly 1,000-post listing window is a retrieval boundary, not a setting that can be raised to recover Pushshift’s historical archive.
- Account-specific collections are missing: Saved, upvoted, multireddit, and user-post sources require authenticated Reddit/PRAW access; the Sylvia subreddit source does not supply those feeds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Sylvia source download Reddit post images itself?
No. Its documented role is to retrieve subreddit listings and pass post data into RedditDownloader. Reddit-hosted media files continue to be fetched from Reddit’s CDN by the downstream download path.
Why might a post appear in a listing but not become a file?
Retrieving a post and accepting its URL as downloadable media are separate steps. The reported five-post trial included one retrieved self-post that was rejected because it had no direct media link.
Can I use the fork to recover every post from a subreddit?
No. The reported listing window is about 1,000 posts, and the fork does not restore Pushshift-era deep historical retrieval. Cursor pagination traverses the available listing; it is not evidence of unlimited history.
Is the fork independently tested across every supported media host?
The verification described is limited: the author reports tests involving r/aww, URL filtering, a direct-link handler, and five posts. That does not establish a broad benchmark or guarantee that all media hosts and CDN links will work.
