Rayman Legends Retold is an announced remake, not a new name for the Nintendo Switch Definitive Edition. Ubisoft says Retold will redraw the presentation, rework stages and expand or revise several modes and options, while the original game’s musical platforming, local co-op and Kung Foot remain the baseline it is built from. The current Ubisoft listing gives December 3, 2026 as the release date for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. That date replaces the October 1 date in Ubisoft’s earlier announcement.
If you already own Rayman Legends, the purchase question is therefore about the announced remake treatment, not about gaining access to the underlying game for the first time. If you own the Switch Definitive Edition, you own an edition of the original—not Retold.

What is Rayman Legends Retold: a remake or a remaster?
Retold is a remake. Ubisoft’s announcement describes new hand-drawn presentation work and reworked stages, rather than simply moving the original files to newer hardware. The company also describes additions or revisions to cooperative play, Kung Foot and accessibility options.
That wording matters because “Definitive Edition” refers to a particular edition of the existing Rayman Legends. The Switch Definitive Edition does not become Retold when played on a newer Nintendo system, and Retold is not merely a higher-resolution label for that Switch release.

What “remake” tells you—and what it does not
A remake label establishes that Ubisoft is changing authored game content and presentation. It does not establish that every stage has been rebuilt, that every animation has been replaced, or that the remake will run at a particular frame rate or resolution. Ubisoft has not supplied a complete level-by-level change list in the material currently available.
For buyers, the practical distinction is that Retold is a separate product with a revised presentation and stage work, while Definitive Edition is the name of the original game’s Switch edition. “Remake” does not promise a particular amount of new content, a technical upgrade on every platform, or a discount for owners of an older copy. Ubisoft has not announced an ownership-based upgrade path.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat changed in the visuals and stages?
The announced visual and stage changes are the clearest differences: Retold receives new hand-drawn presentation work and reworked levels, while the original remains the reference version of Rayman Legends’ 2D art and stage design.
The original game’s baseline
The original Rayman Legends is a 2D platform game built around musical stages, cooperative platforming and the Kung Foot side mode. Those ideas are part of the game Retold is remaking; they are not inventions of the remake.
Retold’s announced treatment
Ubisoft says its artists have reworked the hand-drawn presentation and that stages have been reworked. “Reworked” should be read as a publisher description of changes, not as proof that every room, route or encounter is different. Until Ubisoft publishes a complete breakdown or the game is released, the safe comparison is original stage design versus a remake with revised stage work.
What is not established yet
- No authoritative level count for Retold is provided.
- No frame-rate target, resolution specification or performance benchmark is established by the announcement.
- No complete list identifies which original stages are unchanged, revised or entirely new.
- No final visual comparison can be made from the announcement alone.
These limits are important for buyers deciding whether the remake is a technical upgrade or a creative reinterpretation. The available information supports the latter description, but not a claim that one version will “play better” in every technical respect.
Are musical stages, co-op and Kung Foot new in Retold?
No. Musical platforming, local cooperative play and Kung Foot already belong to Rayman Legends. Retold’s announced changes concern how those ideas are presented or expanded.
Musical platforming
The musical-stage concept is part of the original’s identity and remains part of the comparison baseline. Ubisoft’s Retold material does not establish a new music system, a new number of musical stages or a replacement for the original soundtrack structure.

Cooperative play
Co-op existed in the original. Ubisoft describes expanded cooperative play for Retold, but the available announcement does not define every rule, character change or stage-specific adjustment behind that phrase.
That makes “expanded co-op” a reason to watch for further details, not yet a complete buying specification. Ubisoft has not described whether the expansion affects campaign rules, adds particular cooperative mechanics or changes the number of players across every mode. If your group needs a specific setup, check the platform listing and final feature description rather than assuming the phrase guarantees it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Kung Foot is not new. The original included it, and the Switch Definitive Edition describes Switch-specific Kung Foot functionality. Retold introduces Kung Foot Evo, which should be understood as a revision or expansion of the existing mode rather than the first appearance of Kung Foot in the series.
Does Retold have online co-op?
Online campaign co-op is not confirmed by the currently disclosed information. A PlayStation product listing describes Retold as supporting up to four local players; that is a local-multiplayer capability and should not be converted into a claim about online campaign play.
What the four-player listing means
The PlayStation wording is useful for households and groups planning to play on one system: it identifies local support for as many as four players. It does not specify whether all modes support four participants, whether extra controllers are required, or whether the same limit applies across every platform.
Local play and online play answer different questions. The listing’s four-player wording can help you plan a shared-screen session in the same room, but it does not tell a friend in another home how to join. Likewise, a storefront’s general online features or account metadata would not, by itself, establish online campaign co-op. Wait for an explicit Ubisoft feature description if remote play is essential.
What remains unresolved online
Neither the announcement nor the cited listing establishes an online campaign mode, cross-play, matchmaking, online Kung Foot or cloud-save behavior. Treat online co-op as an open question until Ubisoft publishes a platform-specific feature list or support documentation.
What accessibility features are announced?
Ubisoft says Retold will add accessibility features, making accessibility part of the remake’s announced scope. The currently available material does not provide a complete, verified setting-by-setting catalogue, so it would be misleading to name controls or options that have not been documented.

How to read the announcement
The announcement supports the conclusion that Retold is being designed with additional accessibility consideration. It does not prove that a particular feature is available on every platform, in every mode or in the original release.
If a particular control, visual or gameplay option is important to you, wait for Ubisoft’s setting list or contact platform support rather than treating the broad announcement as confirmation of a specific feature. Accessibility settings can matter to the purchase decision, but the current announcement does not establish their exact names, behavior or platform availability.

Why comparisons with the original need care
Older promotional text may not have listed every accessibility option that existed in every version of Rayman Legends. The absence of a feature from an old description is not proof that the original universally lacked it. Compare only settings that Ubisoft verifies for a specific edition.
What is the difference between Retold and Rayman Legends Definitive Edition?
The two names describe different products. Retold is the announced remake for newer platforms; Definitive Edition is the original Rayman Legends adapted for Nintendo Switch.
| Question | Rayman Legends Retold | Rayman Legends Definitive Edition |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | Ubisoft’s announced remake | An edition of the original game |
| Presentation | New hand-drawn presentation work announced | The original game’s 2D presentation |
| Stages | Reworked stages announced; complete scope not stated | Original stage design |
| Co-op | Expanded cooperative play announced; exact changes not fully detailed | Original cooperative play |
| Kung Foot | Kung Foot Evo announced | Kung Foot in the original, with Switch-specific descriptions |
| Accessibility | Accessibility features announced by Ubisoft | Do not infer a complete feature comparison from older promotional text |
| System | PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC | Nintendo Switch |
The Switch Definitive Edition also has Switch-specific touch-control descriptions. That makes it a distinct way to play the original on Nintendo Switch, not evidence that Retold shares the same interface or feature set. If you are comparing products for a Nintendo system, check the complete title and system on the listing: “Definitive Edition” points to the original Switch release, while “Retold” is listed for Switch 2.
Which platforms and editions are available?
Ubisoft currently lists Retold for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. The Switch Definitive Edition is the separate original-game release for Nintendo Switch.
Retold platforms
- PlayStation 5: listed as a supported platform; the PlayStation listing specifies up to four local players.
- Xbox Series X|S: listed by Ubisoft.
- Nintendo Switch 2: listed by Ubisoft; this is not the same product as the original Nintendo Switch Definitive Edition.
- PC: listed by Ubisoft. A complete requirements page is not established by the available material.
Platform confirmation is not the same as a performance recommendation. Ubisoft’s platform list establishes where Retold is planned, but it does not supply frame-rate or resolution targets. On PC, look for minimum and recommended requirements before buying; a platform listing alone cannot tell you how a particular computer will run the game. Likewise, do not assume that the Switch 2 listing means an original Switch version or that one console edition’s features carry over unchanged to another.
Physical Launch Edition
Ubisoft’s announced retail Launch Edition includes a reversible poster and an artbook. Those extras describe the physical package, not a guaranteed preorder bonus or a guarantee of stock at a particular retailer. An Amazon listing, preorder status and inventory were not verified, so check the platform, region and format on any retailer page before paying.

If you are specifically seeking the physical package, use the full name Rayman Legends Retold Launch Edition and verify that the listing identifies the correct platform and includes the announced extras. Store pages can differ by region and format; do not infer that a digital purchase includes a poster or artbook, or that every retail listing is the Launch Edition.
Buying the original instead
Someone seeking the original on Nintendo Switch should look specifically for Rayman Legends Definitive Edition, verify that the listing is for Nintendo Switch, and confirm whether the seller is offering a physical or digital copy. Do not assume that a listing containing “Rayman Legends” is Retold.
When does Rayman Legends Retold come out?
As of October 30, 2026, Ubisoft’s current game page lists December 3, 2026. An earlier Ubisoft announcement listed October 1, 2026, so the newer date is the one to use for current planning.
This is a dated status. Recheck Ubisoft’s game page and the relevant storefront near purchase time, especially after December 3, before describing the game as released or relying on final reviews, performance figures or post-launch support details.
Should you buy Retold if you already own Rayman Legends?
There is no single answer because the announced value comes from the remake treatment rather than from access to a previously unavailable genre or mode.
Retold makes the most sense when
- You want the new hand-drawn presentation and are interested in reworked stages.
- You plan to play on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 or PC.
- Expanded co-op, Kung Foot Evo or the announced accessibility work are important to your group.
- You value the physical Launch Edition’s reversible poster and artbook and can confirm the package is available for your platform.
Keeping the original makes more sense when
- You are satisfied with the original 2D presentation and existing stages.
- You mainly want musical platforming, local co-op or Kung Foot, all of which already exist in Rayman Legends.
- You own the Switch Definitive Edition and do not need the remake’s revised presentation or additions.
- You need confirmed online campaign co-op, a specific performance target or a documented save-transfer path; none is established yet.
For a value decision, weigh what you already own against the changes Ubisoft has actually announced. If your main interest is the established platforming, music, local co-op or Kung Foot, the original already contains those core ideas. If the revised artwork, stage work, Kung Foot Evo or announced accessibility additions are the draw, Retold is the relevant product—but the precise extent of those changes remains to be demonstrated. The physical Launch Edition may add collectible value for some buyers, while its poster and artbook do not change the game features.

What cannot be decided before release
A definitive “plays better” recommendation requires final software and evidence about performance, controls, loading, stage changes and accessibility implementation. Those details are not available in the current announcement, so an upgrade decision should be based on the announced creative changes and your platform needs rather than assumed technical gains.

- Check the platform. Retold is listed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Do not assume compatibility with the original Nintendo Switch.
- Check the format. The poster and artbook belong to the announced retail Launch Edition; a digital listing may not include them.
- Read the multiplayer wording. “Up to four local players” does not confirm online campaign co-op or cross-play.
- Check the date. Use December 3, 2026 unless Ubisoft posts a later change.
- Look for final requirements and support details on PC. The current announcement does not establish minimum or recommended hardware.
- Review regional details. Verify language, edition name, physical contents and seller region before ordering.
What remains unknown about Retold?
Several practical questions should remain open rather than being filled with assumptions:
- Whether online campaign co-op, cross-play or online Kung Foot will be supported.
- Exactly how many stages are reworked and whether any are entirely new.
- Final frame-rate, resolution, loading and graphics specifications by platform.
- The complete list of accessibility settings and whether options differ by system.
- Whether original saves, downloadable content or ownership rights carry into Retold.
- Whether owners of an earlier version receive an upgrade path or must buy Retold separately.
Until Ubisoft documents these points, descriptions should stay tied to the features it has actually announced.
