Ray-Ban Meta battery life depends on the generation: Gen 1 is rated for up to 4 hours of moderate use, while Gen 2 is rated for up to 8 hours. Continuous audio streaming with voice assistance reduces those figures to up to 3 and 5 hours respectively. Both generations pair with supported iPhone and Android phones through Bluetooth and the Meta AI app. They use open-ear speakers, provide touch and voice controls, and are IPX4 water resistant—not waterproof. A front-facing capture LED normally signals photo or video recording, although some newer camera-based AI interactions may not activate it.
This guide explains the practical limits, setup requirements, compatible phones, privacy behavior, charging, audio controls and the differences between the two generations.

Gen 1 lasts up to 4 hours with moderate use and up to 3 hours when audio streaming and voice assistance run continuously. Gen 2 lasts up to 8 hours with moderate use and up to 5 hours under continuous audio streaming and voice assistance. These are maximum ratings, so frequent camera use, calls, high volume, voice queries and environmental conditions can shorten real-world runtime.
| Specification | Ray-Ban Meta Gen 1 | Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Moderate-use battery rating | Up to 4 hours, according to Ray-Ban’s current FAQ | Up to 8 hours, according to Ray-Ban’s FAQ and Meta’s September 17, 2025 announcement |
| Continuous audio plus voice assistance | Up to 3 hours | Up to 5 hours |
| Charging speed | Not stated in the cited official information | Up to 50% in 20 minutes, according to Meta’s 2025 announcement |
| Charging-case capacity | A fully charged case provides eight additional frame charges | Up to 48 additional hours, according to Ray-Ban and Meta |
| Price and availability | Current price and regional availability vary and are not stated here | $379 starting price at the 2025 announcement; current price and availability vary by region |
The case is the practical way to extend a day away from an outlet. Gen 2’s up-to-48-hour case figure is an energy-capacity rating, not a promise that every owner will obtain exactly 48 hours; the number changes with audio, camera, calls and AI use. Carry a USB-C charging plug for wall charging, and top up before long recording or travel sessions.

What is the difference between Ray-Ban Meta Gen 1 and Gen 2?
Gen 2’s headline advantage is substantially longer battery life and a faster documented top-up. The core phone, privacy and audio workflow remains similar, but some newer camera-based AI interactions can behave differently around the capture LED.
| Comparison point | Gen 1 | Gen 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Moderate-use runtime | Up to 4 hours | Up to 8 hours |
| Continuous audio and voice assistance | Up to 3 hours | Up to 5 hours |
| Case reserve | Eight additional frame charges | Up to 48 additional hours |
| Fast charging figure | Not stated | 50% in 20 minutes |
| Camera and video capability | Photo and video capture; specific camera specifications are not stated in the cited FAQ | Photo and video capture plus newer camera-based AI interactions; specific camera specifications are not stated in the cited FAQ |
| Phone support | Use a supported Android or iPhone with the Meta AI app; exact model and regional support should be checked before purchase | |
| Privacy behavior | A front-facing capture LED signals ordinary photo or video capture. Some newer camera-based AI requests may not activate that LED; Meta describes separate privacy handling for those requests. | |
| Audio controls | Open-ear speakers, right-temple touch controls and supported voice commands | |
| Water resistance | IPX4: suitable for light rain or splashes, not immersion | |
| Price and regional availability | Not stated in the cited official information | $379 starting price at announcement in 2025; current listings differ by market |
If you regularly stream audio, make calls or use voice and camera features throughout a workday, Gen 2’s larger battery is the meaningful upgrade. If your use is occasional and a charging case is nearby, Gen 1’s shorter rating may be adequate. Do not assume that a Gen 2 listing is available in every country or that a US launch price applies elsewhere.
Which iPhones and Android phones work with Ray-Ban Meta glasses?
Setup requires a compatible Android or iPhone, Bluetooth, wireless internet, a Meta account and the Meta AI app. Ray-Ban lists Android 10 or newer with location services enabled, or iOS 14.4 or newer, as the general software requirement. Compatibility is model-specific, so an operating-system version alone is not a guarantee.
iPhone models listed by Ray-Ban
- iPhone XR
- iPhone SE (2022)
- iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 families
Google Pixel models listed by Ray-Ban
- Pixel 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 families
- Pixel Fold variants where listed in the compatibility document
Samsung Galaxy models listed by Ray-Ban
- Galaxy Note 20
- Galaxy S20 through S24 families
- Galaxy Z Flip3 through Z Flip6
- Galaxy Z Fold2 through Z Fold6
Regional firmware, carrier variants and later model revisions can affect support. Check the official compatibility PDF for your exact phone before ordering, especially if you use a foldable, an imported model or a phone released after the listed families.
How do I set up and pair Ray-Ban Meta glasses?
The initial setup connects the glasses to the Meta AI app over Bluetooth and requires internet access. Have the charging hardware and account credentials ready before you begin.

- Confirm requirements. Use Android 10 or later with location services enabled, or iOS 14.4 or later. Make sure the phone has wireless internet access and Bluetooth enabled.
- Install the Meta AI app. Sign in with, or create, a Meta account in the app.
- Charge the glasses and case. Use a USB-C charging plug for wall charging. A low battery can interrupt pairing or firmware setup.
- Open the app’s device-adding flow. Follow the on-screen instructions to select the glasses and approve Bluetooth pairing requests.
- Allow required permissions. Location services on Android and the permissions requested by the app support discovery, connectivity and camera-based features.
- Finish the in-app setup. Keep the glasses near the phone until pairing and any software update complete.
The companion app can manage up to two pairs. That combination allows only one Ray-Ban Stories pair, so two pairs of the newer Meta glasses are not necessarily interchangeable with two Stories units. Switching between stored devices is handled in the app rather than by pairing every time from the phone’s Bluetooth menu.
Can people tell when Ray-Ban Meta glasses are recording?
For ordinary photo and video capture, a front-facing external capture LED is designed to signal to people in front of the wearer that recording is taking place. The glasses also have an inward notification LED for the wearer.
Ray-Ban says some newer camera-based AI interactions may not turn on the external capture LED. In those cases, the request is treated as an AI feature rather than ordinary recording, but it still involves the camera. The company says AI photos and videos are not saved in Meta AI conversation history, that information is used to provide the requested feature and, in protected form, to improve products, and that facial-recognition technology is not used.
Camera-based AI sends a photo to Meta’s cloud for processing and handles information under Meta’s Privacy Policy. Explain this distinction to people around you: an LED is a useful recording signal, but it is not a universal indicator for every camera-assisted AI interaction. Follow local consent and recording laws, and avoid using the camera where photography is prohibited.
How do music, calls and voice controls work?
The glasses use open-ear speakers, so audio plays without sealing your ear canal. Your phone supplies streamed audio and phone calls over Bluetooth. You can control playback from the right-temple touchpad or with voice commands when the service is supported.

Touch gestures
- Tap once to pause or play.
- Double-tap to skip forward.
- Triple-tap to skip back.
- Swipe to adjust volume.
Voice commands can control playback and volume with supported services, including Apple Music, Amazon Music and Calm. Amazon Music’s library requires an Amazon Prime subscription. The exact wording of voice commands can change with app and software updates, so use the command prompts shown in the Meta AI app if a spoken request is not recognized.
Closing the glasses pauses audio streaming. Reopening them reconnects to the audio source over Bluetooth, according to Ray-Ban. This behavior is useful when you set the glasses down briefly, but it does not replace charging or manually ending a phone call. Call quality and music volume still depend on the phone connection, network service and the surrounding noise level.
Are Ray-Ban Meta glasses waterproof?
No. Ray-Ban rates them IPX4 water resistant, which means they are designed to tolerate light rain and splashes. IPX4 does not cover submersion, swimming, showering or extended exposure to liquid.
- Wear them cautiously in light rain.
- Remove them before water sports, swimming or a shower.
- Do not leave wet glasses in the charging case; let both the frames and contacts dry first.
- Liquid damage from use beyond the IPX4 rating may not be covered by warranty.
What should I check before buying?
Use this checklist to avoid the most common mismatches between expectations and the product’s documented limits:
Recommended Free Tools
- Generation: Choose Gen 2 if an eight-hour moderate-use rating and 20-minute 50% charge figure matter to your routine.
- Phone: Match your exact iPhone, Pixel or Galaxy model against Ray-Ban’s compatibility PDF, not just the Android or iOS version.
- Connectivity: Plan on Bluetooth, internet access, a Meta account and the Meta AI app for setup and feature use.
- Privacy: Remember that the capture LED signals ordinary photo or video capture, while some camera-based AI interactions may not activate it.
- Audio: Open-ear playback lets outside sound in; it is not the same isolation as earbuds.
- Water: Treat IPX4 as light-rain resistance, never as a swimming rating.
- Charging: Include a USB-C charging plug and use the case as your portable reserve.
- Region and price: The $379 Gen 2 starting price was announced in 2025 and may not match taxes, currency, promotions or availability in your country.
What are the most useful fixes when something does not work?
The glasses will not pair
Confirm Bluetooth and wireless internet are enabled, turn on Android location services when applicable, charge the glasses, then retry from the Meta AI app rather than only from the phone’s Bluetooth settings. If another pair is active, switch devices in the app; it can manage up to two pairs.

Audio will not resume
Open the frames fully, keep the phone nearby, check that the intended music service is selected and verify Bluetooth is still connected. Closing the glasses intentionally pauses streaming, so reopening may be required before playback resumes.
The battery ends sooner than expected
Continuous audio, voice assistance, calls and camera-based features consume more power than intermittent use. Charge the case and frames together before a long outing, and compare your pattern with the separate moderate-use and continuous-audio ratings rather than the larger headline number.
Someone is concerned about recording
Point out the external capture LED for standard photo or video capture and explain that camera-based AI can have different LED behavior. Obtain consent where required and avoid sensitive locations regardless of the indicator.

Can I use Ray-Ban Meta glasses without carrying my phone?
The glasses can retain basic device settings, but setup and phone-streamed audio rely on a paired phone over Bluetooth. Internet-dependent Meta AI features also require an internet connection, so the glasses are not a complete standalone phone or music player.
Can the Meta AI app store more than one pair of glasses?
Yes. The companion app can manage up to two pairs. Ray-Ban specifies that only one Ray-Ban Stories pair is allowed within that two-pair combination, so check the app when switching between two newer pairs or a Stories pair.
Does Amazon Music work with the glasses without a subscription?
The glasses support Amazon Music voice controls, but Ray-Ban’s FAQ notes that an Amazon Prime subscription is required for access to Amazon Music’s library. Bluetooth audio from a phone remains subject to the account and service rules of the app you use.
Why might the capture light stay off during an AI request?
Ray-Ban says some newer camera-based AI interactions may not activate the external capture LED. Those requests can send a photo to Meta’s cloud for processing, so the absence of the light should not be treated as proof that the camera is inactive.
