The Rakuten American Express Card can be worthwhile if you regularly shop through Rakuten or use eligible Rakuten Dining partners, but it is not a strong all-purpose rewards card for everyone. It offers an extra 4% on eligible Rakuten purchases up to $7,000 in card spending per calendar year, then 1%; eligible Rakuten Dining purchases earn 10% total. It also earns 2% on eligible grocery and restaurant purchases and 1% on other eligible purchases. The key trade-offs are merchant and purchase eligibility, quarterly payouts, and a 1% rate on most everyday spending.

How does the Rakuten American Express Card earn rewards?

The card combines rewards for eligible Rakuten purchases with category rewards for groceries and restaurants. The rates below come from the Rakuten American Express Card Help Center, whose current card-specific rate summary was updated May 4, 2026. They describe card rewards, not any separate Cash Back Rakuten may offer through its shopping portal.

Eligible purchase Card reward Important qualification
Rakuten purchases, online or in store Extra 4% through the first $7,000 in card spending per calendar year; 1% thereafter The threshold applies to eligible Rakuten card spending. Rakuten Dining purchases do not count toward it.
Rakuten Dining purchases 10% total Applies to eligible purchases with participating Dining partners, not restaurant spending generally.
Eligible grocery purchases 2% Eligibility depends on merchant category coding.
Eligible restaurant purchases outside the special Dining rate 2% Eligibility depends on merchant category coding; eligible Rakuten Dining purchases have a separate 10% total rate.
Other eligible purchases 1% Merchant and transaction terms may affect eligibility.

The $7,000 cap is a threshold for the elevated Rakuten purchase rate, not a cap on all card rewards. For a simple illustration, 4% of $7,000 is $280 in card rewards at that rate; eligible Rakuten purchases above the threshold earn at 1%. This illustration excludes any separate portal Cash Back, which is governed by its own offer and terms.

What does the $7,000 Rakuten spending threshold mean in practice?

The higher rate is most valuable for a cardholder whose eligible Rakuten purchases stay within the first $7,000 of card spending in a calendar year. Once that threshold is crossed, the rate on eligible Rakuten purchases falls to 1%, so the card’s advantage narrows for additional spending in that category.

Dining is handled separately: eligible Rakuten Dining purchases earn 10% total and do not use up any of the $7,000 threshold. Do not assume every meal at a restaurant qualifies for that rate. The purchase must meet the Dining program’s eligibility requirements; a restaurant purchase that does not qualify for that program may instead be subject to the ordinary restaurant category rate if it is coded as eligible.

Rakuten’s card help information also says there is no limit to the total amount of Cash Back a cardholder can earn. That statement should not be read as an unlimited 4% rate: the elevated rate on eligible Rakuten purchases applies only through the stated annual threshold.

Examples using the stated rates

Illustrative annual spending Card-reward treatment What the example shows
$3,000 of eligible Rakuten purchases The spending remains within the elevated-rate portion; 4% would equal $120 in card rewards before any separate portal offer. Moderate Rakuten use can capture the full elevated rate.
$7,000 of eligible Rakuten purchases 4% would equal $280 in card rewards before any separate portal offer. The entire stated threshold is used.
$9,000 of eligible Rakuten purchases The first $7,000 is treated at the elevated rate; the additional $2,000 is treated at 1%. That is $280 plus $20, or $300 in card rewards, before any separate portal offer. Spending beyond the threshold does not continue at 4%.
$500 of eligible Rakuten Dining purchases 10% total would equal $50 if every transaction meets Dining requirements. Dining spending is separate from the $7,000 threshold.

These are arithmetic illustrations, not guarantees that a particular merchant or transaction qualifies. The transaction must satisfy the current offer and card terms, and the rate shown is the card reward rather than a promise of additional portal Cash Back.

Is the Rakuten card’s Cash Back separate from Rakuten portal rewards?

Yes. The card reward and any separate Rakuten shopping-portal Cash Back are distinct. A portal offer depends on the specific merchant offer and its terms; the card’s rate depends on the eligible card transaction. A purchase may therefore involve two separate reward programs, but neither should be treated as guaranteed solely because the other applies.

Before placing an order, check the merchant’s current Rakuten offer and restrictions as well as the card’s reward terms. A store’s offer may exclude gift cards, certain travel transactions, purchases made through a Buy Now, Pay Later service, or transactions at a Coupons Only store. Those are examples listed in Rakuten help material; exclusions vary by offer, so the current store terms matter. The card terms also say Rakuten or Imprint determines which transaction amounts qualify for Rakuten transaction rewards.

Can the card earn American Express Membership Rewards points?

Potentially, but the points option is subject to program eligibility and is not automatic for every applicant. The card’s own confirmed rewards may be paid as American Express Membership Rewards points if that payment method is available and selected. This is a way to receive the card’s rewards as points; it does not mean the card itself transfers points directly to airline or hotel partners.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is a separate route for earning points on Rakuten portal shopping. Rakuten’s portal-to-points program requires a different eligible U.S. Membership Rewards card linked to the account. Rakuten specifically says the Rakuten American Express Card is not eligible for that separate portal program. In other words, do not assume holding this card alone makes portal purchases earn Membership Rewards points.

What a points-focused applicant should verify

  • Whether the application and account offer the Membership Rewards payment option at all.
  • Whether an eligible U.S. Membership Rewards card is already linked for the separate portal-to-points program.
  • Which rewards are confirmed before selecting points as the payout method.
  • That points received through this card are not being described as a direct airline or hotel transfer benefit.

If you do not have another eligible Membership Rewards card, the card can still pay confirmed rewards by check or PayPal, subject to the account’s available choices. The absence of a linked points card does not turn portal Cash Back into points automatically.

How and when are rewards paid?

Confirmed rewards are paid every three months using the method selected for the account: check, PayPal, or Membership Rewards points, subject to eligibility for the points option. The quarterly schedule means these rewards are not an immediate statement credit for each purchase.

A purchase may first appear as pending. Pending rewards are not yet confirmed, and Rakuten’s card help page says pending Cash Back expires immediately if the card is canceled or closed. If you are considering closing the account, check the status of pending rewards first and review the applicable terms; the cited policy concerns pending Cash Back and should not be broadened into a claim about every reward balance or payment method.

A practical payout routine

  1. Save the merchant offer and note any transaction restrictions when you shop.
  2. Check the account after the purchase to distinguish pending from confirmed rewards.
  3. Review the quarterly payment schedule and selected method rather than expecting an instant credit.
  4. Resolve eligible purchases while the account is open; closing or canceling can immediately expire pending Cash Back.

Quarterly payments also affect budgeting. Someone comparing this card with an instant-cash-back product should treat the delay as a convenience difference, not as extra yield.

Which purchases may miss the advertised rate?

Eligibility is not determined by how a purchase looks on a receipt alone. For grocery and restaurant category rewards, the card’s terms rely on the merchant category code supplied by the merchant or card network. If a merchant uses an unexpected code, the purchase may not receive the rate a shopper anticipated. Purchases routed through a third-party seller can also be coded differently from a direct purchase with the store.

  • Check the offer before buying: A Rakuten merchant promotion may have its own exclusions, including limitations on gift cards or particular transaction types.
  • Pay attention to how you pay: Rakuten help material lists some Buy Now, Pay Later transactions among possible exclusions. Do not assume using a qualifying store automatically makes every payment method eligible.
  • Verify travel purchases individually: Some travel transactions may be excluded. A booking through a travel merchant or portal is not automatically equivalent to an eligible Rakuten purchase.
  • Do not rely on a store name alone: A marketplace seller, payment intermediary, or third-party merchant may submit a transaction under a different category than the retailer itself.
  • Separate Dining from ordinary restaurants: A restaurant can code as an eligible restaurant for 2% without participating in Rakuten Dining. The 10% total rate requires the Dining program’s conditions.
  • Keep the payment path simple: If an offer excludes a payment intermediary or Buy Now, Pay Later service, changing the checkout method can change eligibility even when the underlying store is listed.

The official Rakuten materials have not been entirely consistent over time about the spending threshold: a July 2026 general help article listed a different cap, while the newer card-specific help pages and another official FAQ state $7,000. The card-specific figure is the appropriate one to use here, but rewards terms can change. Check the current card-specific terms and the offer attached to a purchase before relying on a rate.

What fees and interest should cardholders check?

The Rakuten American Express Card Help Center lists a $0 annual fee. That does not establish the cost of carrying a balance or every possible account fee. The APR may be variable or fixed depending on the cardholder’s credit profile, and the Help Center directs cardholders to their own Cardholder Agreement or Imprint account for current APR and fee details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Help Center’s current summary lists late-payment fees of up to $27 for a first instance and up to $35 for subsequent instances, a $35 returned-payment fee, and a $1 minimum-interest charge where applicable. It also says foreign-currency conversion may be subject to a fee. These amounts and terms should be checked against the agreement for the individual account, rather than treated as universal pricing.

How to evaluate the real cost

With a $0 annual fee, the basic comparison is driven by rewards, interest and account fees rather than an annual membership charge. A cardholder who pays in full can focus on the return from eligible categories and the inconvenience of quarterly payment. A cardholder who carries a balance should compare the account’s APR with the expected reward because interest can quickly outweigh a 1%, 2% or even 4% card reward. Late or returned payments can also cost more than a small month’s rewards.

Do not assume overseas use is free: the Help Center says foreign-currency conversion may be subject to a fee. The individual agreement is the controlling document for APR, foreign-currency treatment, minimum-interest charges and other pricing.

Who is most likely to benefit from the card?

The card is a better fit for someone who can routinely make eligible purchases through Rakuten, values the option of receiving confirmed rewards as Membership Rewards points, or spends with participating Rakuten Dining partners. It is less compelling if most spending happens outside Rakuten, if the cardholder wants an immediate payout, or if the person is seeking a high base rate across all purchases.

It may fit if you:

  • Shop through Rakuten often enough to use a meaningful share of the elevated-rate threshold.
  • Can confirm that your preferred retailers and transactions qualify under current offer terms.
  • Would use quarterly checks, PayPal payments, or eligible Membership Rewards points.
  • Spend at participating Rakuten Dining partners and understand that the 10% total rate is eligibility-dependent.
  • Already hold another eligible U.S. Membership Rewards card if your goal is to earn points through Rakuten portal shopping.
  • Can pay the statement on time and in full, avoiding interest that could erase the reward value.

It may be a poor fit if you:

  • Need a strong return on spending that is not tied to Rakuten or eligible grocery and restaurant categories.
  • Prefer rewards deposited promptly after each purchase rather than paid on a quarterly schedule.
  • Expect all restaurant transactions to earn the Rakuten Dining rate or all travel purchases to qualify as Rakuten purchases.
  • Would carry a balance: interest can outweigh rewards, and the APR depends on the individual account.
  • Plan to close the card while transactions are still pending, risking expiration of pending Cash Back.

How should you compare it with another rewards card?

Compare the cards on the spending you actually expect to make, not on the largest advertised percentage. The Rakuten card’s distinctive value is its Rakuten-linked earning structure; a flat-rate cash-back card may be simpler for purchases outside those channels. Neither structure is automatically better for every cardholder.

Comparison question Why it matters for this card
How much eligible Rakuten spending will I make before and after the $7,000 calendar-year threshold? The eligible Rakuten rate moves from an extra 4% to 1% after the threshold.
Do I use participating Rakuten Dining partners? The stated 10% total applies only to eligible Dining purchases, not all restaurant spending.
What return do I get on ordinary spending? Eligible grocery and restaurant purchases earn 2%; other eligible purchases earn 1%.
What are my account’s annual fee, APR, and other fees? The Help Center states a $0 annual fee, but APR and some fees depend on the individual agreement.
How do I want rewards paid, and how quickly? Confirmed rewards are paid every three months by the selected eligible method.
Do I have another eligible Membership Rewards card? The Rakuten card alone does not qualify for Rakuten’s separate portal-to-points program.
Will I use the card abroad? Foreign-currency conversion may be subject to a fee, so verify the agreement before treating it as a travel card.

A useful estimate is to separate projected purchases into eligible Rakuten spending within the threshold, eligible Rakuten spending beyond it, Dining purchases, eligible grocery and restaurant spending, and everything else. Apply the listed rate only to the category and portion that qualifies, then compare that result with the alternative card’s terms. Do not count potential portal Cash Back as certain unless you have verified that the merchant offer and transaction meet their requirements.

A simple decision process

  1. Estimate your calendar-year Rakuten purchases and identify how much falls below $7,000.
  2. List Dining purchases separately because they do not consume the threshold.
  3. Review grocery, restaurant and other spending using the 2% and 1% categories, while allowing for merchant coding.
  4. Choose whether quarterly check, PayPal or eligible points payments fit your cash-flow needs.
  5. Read the live offer and Cardholder Agreement for APR, foreign-currency treatment and fees.
  6. Compare the resulting dollar reward with a flat-rate card, including that card’s annual fee and redemption timing.

What is the verdict on the Rakuten American Express Card?

This is a specialized rewards card, not a universal high-rate card. The strongest case is a shopper with regular, eligible Rakuten purchases or participating Rakuten Dining spending who is comfortable waiting for quarterly payouts and will use the chosen reward method. The weaker case is someone whose spending is mostly elsewhere and who would earn 1% on most purchases. Before applying or planning around a points strategy, verify the current reward terms, the available application offer, and the individual Cardholder Agreement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who issues the Rakuten American Express Card?

First Electronic Bank issues the card pursuant to an American Express license, and the card is powered by Imprint Payments. That distinction is useful when locating account-specific terms or seeking support: consult the agreement and account channels provided for your card.

Does Rakuten put a ceiling on all Cash Back earned with the card?

Rakuten’s card help page says there is no limit to the total Cash Back a cardholder can earn. That is different from the rate threshold: a particular elevated purchase rate can be limited even when total rewards have no overall ceiling.

Can the application offer or card terms change after this review?

Yes. Rakuten identifies its product terms as subject to change, and the offer available to an applicant may differ from a previously described offer. Confirm the live application details and your Cardholder Agreement before applying.

Do Rakuten Dining purchases count toward the $7,000 threshold?

No. Eligible Rakuten Dining purchases are treated separately and do not count toward the $7,000 annual threshold for the elevated Rakuten purchase rate. The 10% total rate remains dependent on meeting Dining eligibility requirements.

Is every restaurant purchase eligible for 10%?

No. The 10% total rate applies to eligible purchases with participating Rakuten Dining partners. A nonparticipating restaurant purchase may receive the ordinary 2% restaurant category rate if it is coded as eligible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I transfer this card’s Membership Rewards points directly to an airline or hotel?

The card’s points payout is a way to receive confirmed card rewards as Membership Rewards points, subject to eligibility. The available terms do not describe this card as directly transferring points to airline or hotel partners.

What happens to pending Cash Back if I close the account?

The card help page says pending Cash Back expires immediately when the card is canceled or closed. Check for pending rewards and review the applicable account terms before closing.

Does the card charge a foreign-transaction fee?

The Help Center says foreign-currency conversion may be subject to a fee. Do not assume there is no foreign-transaction fee; check the Cardholder Agreement for the individual account.

How can I estimate whether the card is worthwhile?

Separate expected spending into Rakuten purchases below and above $7,000, eligible Dining, eligible groceries and restaurants, and other purchases. Apply the applicable card rates, then compare the result with another card after considering payout timing, annual fee, APR and transaction eligibility.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose the Rakuten American Express Card for meaningful, eligible Rakuten or Rakuten Dining spending—not as a universal everyday card. Confirm the live offer, merchant terms, payout choice, APR and Cardholder Agreement before applying.
