RAG and knowledge graphs solve different context problems. Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) finds relevant external information and places it in an AI model’s context. A knowledge graph represents entities and their relationships explicitly, allowing retrieval to follow connections among facts. Neither is universally better: document retrieval is often the shortest path to a grounded answer, while graph retrieval is valuable when the question depends on linked entities, dependencies, or multi-hop evidence. Many enterprise systems combine keyword and vector search with graph data, then evaluate the result against real questions, access rules, freshness needs, latency targets, and evidence standards.
The practical choice is therefore not “RAG or graph” in the abstract. It is: what shape do your users’ questions have, what unit of evidence must be retrieved, and which data pipeline can your team maintain reliably?

Retrieval-augmented generation is a system pattern in which a language model is paired with a separate information-retrieval system or knowledge base. Given a user query, the system finds relevant information and supplies it to the model in context, so the model can answer with information that is not contained in its original training data. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) definition also emphasizes that RAG can change the information available to a model without retraining it.
In a document-oriented implementation, the retrievable evidence is usually a passage from a policy, ticket, contract, manual, wiki page, or other source. The model does not automatically “know” the whole repository; the retrieval layer selects what it sees for a particular request.

What does a basic text RAG pipeline do?
- Ingest sources. Connect approved repositories and preserve metadata such as document owner, department, version, effective date, and permissions.
- Clean and segment content. Remove irrelevant markup, normalize text, and split long documents into chunks that can be retrieved without losing the surrounding meaning.
- Create an index. Generate embeddings for semantic search and store them with the original text and metadata. A lexical index can support exact names, codes, and phrases.
- Retrieve and rank. Convert the user request into a query, fetch candidate passages, apply filters and ranking, and select the context that fits the model’s budget.
- Generate an answer. Place the selected passages and instructions in the model prompt. A production application can expose source links, document dates, or quoted evidence alongside the response.
This four-stage outline is documented in AWS Prescriptive Guidance. Real deployments add ingestion monitoring, permission-aware filtering, duplicate handling, reranking, freshness controls, prompt limits, citation handling, and evaluation. Those controls determine whether a theoretically relevant passage is actually safe and useful for a particular employee.
When is ordinary RAG a good fit?
RAG is a natural starting point for questions such as “What is the travel reimbursement limit?”, “Summarize the incident runbook,” or “Which form is required for this request?” These questions generally need a small set of authoritative passages rather than a computed path through many entities. RAG can also combine keyword and vector retrieval; Microsoft’s Azure AI Search guidance describes using both approaches and applying ranking methods.
Conventional RAG has boundaries. Microsoft’s Copilot Studio guidance describes it as suited to factual knowledge-base questions, summaries, and specific facts, while cautioning against treating the basic pattern as a solution for full-document comparison, policy-compliance evaluation, or complex reasoning over long unstructured documents. For those cases, add structured retrieval, a specialized comparison workflow, or a hybrid design and test it on the enterprise’s actual evidence requirements.
What is a knowledge graph, and what does GraphRAG add?
A knowledge graph stores entities as nodes and the relationships between them as edges. “Service A depends on Service B,” “Employee X belongs to Team Y,” and “Control C applies to Regulation R” can be represented as explicit links rather than left implicit in separate paragraphs. Attributes, timestamps, source references, and text descriptions can be attached to graph elements.
GraphRAG is a family of architectures that uses this graph structure during retrieval and generation. Depending on the design, retrieval may return an entity, a relationship (triple), a path through several entities, a subgraph, a description, or a summary. The AWS GraphRAG explainer describes these graph-centered concepts, while an ACM survey of GraphRAG systems separates graph-based indexing, graph-guided retrieval, and graph-enhanced generation as distinct stages.
How does graph retrieval answer a relationship question?
Suppose a user asks which customer-facing applications could be affected by a change to a shared database. A passage retriever may find documents mentioning the database and applications, but it must infer the dependency chain from text fragments. A graph can start at the database node, follow dependency edges, and return the connected applications, ownership records, and supporting descriptions. The language model then explains that retrieved subgraph using the attached evidence.
This advantage is conditional. The graph must contain the relevant entities and edges, those edges must be correct and current, and the retrieval policy must select the right path. Graph structure does not automatically make generated answers accurate; extraction mistakes, missing links, stale attributes, or an unsuitable traversal can still produce a misleading response.

What is the difference between RAG and a knowledge graph?
RAG describes a retrieval-and-generation pattern. A knowledge graph describes a structured representation of entities and relationships. A graph can be the retrieval source inside a RAG application, and a RAG application can combine graph results with passages from documents, so the categories overlap rather than form mutually exclusive products.
| Decision axis | Document-oriented RAG | Graph-based retrieval or GraphRAG |
|---|---|---|
| Typical question shape | Specific fact, policy lookup, or narrative summary where relevant passages contain the answer. | Questions requiring connections among entities, dependencies, paths, or several linked facts. |
| Retrieval unit | Text chunk, document section, search result, or a combination of passages. | Entity, relationship/triple, path, subgraph, graph description, summary, or graph plus raw passages. |
| Preparation | Source ingestion, cleaning, chunking, metadata capture, embeddings, and lexical or vector indexing. | Schema design, entity and relationship extraction or loading, identifiers, provenance, validation, graph indexing, and often text indexing as well. |
| Ongoing upkeep | Re-index changed documents, remove obsolete versions, and preserve permissions and source metadata. | Update nodes, edges, attributes, provenance, and schema mappings as source systems and business relationships change. |
| Traceability | Can point to the passages and source documents used for an answer when metadata and citation handling are implemented. | Can expose the traversed entities and relationships plus their supporting sources; traceability depends on how provenance is modeled. |
| Infrastructure profile | Search or vector infrastructure, an ingestion pipeline, model access, and operational controls. | Graph storage and traversal, graph-construction pipelines, validation and update jobs, plus any text or vector indexes and model access. |
| Quality question to measure | Did retrieval cover the authoritative passages, and did the answer preserve their meaning and citations? | Did the system select the correct entities and path, preserve relationship direction and qualifiers, and explain the evidence accurately? |
These are architectural tendencies, not universal performance claims. The reviewed guidance does not establish a neutral cost threshold, latency cutoff, or accuracy percentage at which one approach always wins.
Which query types favor RAG, graphs, or a hybrid?
When should I start with document RAG?
Choose document RAG when the answer is stated directly in a relatively small set of authoritative passages. Examples include a benefits rule, a troubleshooting instruction, a product specification, or a summary of a project update. Start with hybrid lexical-plus-vector retrieval if users search for exact identifiers, legal phrases, or error codes as well as natural-language descriptions.

When does a graph add meaningful value?
Use graph retrieval when the user needs to traverse relationships: impact analysis, ownership chains, dependency maps, organizational reporting lines, entitlement inheritance, or connections among regulations, controls, systems, and evidence. Graphs are also useful when the same entity appears under multiple names and a canonical identifier is needed to join records reliably.
When is a hybrid the safer design?
A hybrid is appropriate when the answer needs both relationship structure and the wording of source documents. Retrieve a graph path or subgraph to establish which entities are connected, then fetch the policies, tickets, contracts, or technical passages that explain those links. The model receives a compact structural context together with quotable evidence rather than being asked to infer a complete relationship map from isolated chunks.
Hybrid retrieval can also combine enterprise sources. Google Research describes sufficient context as potentially combining web pages, private corpora, and knowledge graphs in one RAG context; see its discussion of the role of sufficient context in RAG. The retrieval planner should decide which source types are needed for each query instead of attaching every available source to every prompt.
What data preparation and maintenance does each architecture require?
Document-RAG operations
- Connect and normalize: preserve headings, tables, lists, page boundaries, language, version, effective date, and access-control metadata where possible.
- Choose chunk boundaries deliberately: split at semantic sections rather than arbitrary character counts when a policy’s exceptions or definitions must remain together.
- Maintain indexes: reprocess changed files, delete withdrawn content, and prevent duplicate versions from competing in retrieval.
- Filter before generation: enforce the user’s permissions at retrieval time; hiding a citation after generation is not an adequate access-control mechanism.
- Watch freshness: expose document dates and detect sources that have not been synchronized within the required service window.
Knowledge-graph operations
- Define a useful schema: decide which entity types, relationship directions, qualifiers, identifiers, and time ranges users’ questions require.
- Resolve entities: map aliases and system-specific identifiers to the same canonical entity without merging genuinely different objects.
- Extract or load relationships: use source-system feeds, rules, or language-model-assisted extraction, then validate high-impact edges.
- Attach provenance: retain the source record, timestamp, confidence or validation status, and any scope condition for each important fact.
- Handle change: update or retire edges when ownership, dependencies, policy applicability, or organizational structure changes.
- Index for traversal and search: support the graph operations needed by the query planner and, where necessary, connect graph elements to passages and embeddings.
A graph construction pipeline is an additional production system, not a one-time import. If the enterprise cannot assign ownership for schema changes, entity resolution, and edge validation, a graph may create more operational risk than it removes.

How do governance and source traceability differ?
Both approaches need the same fundamental controls: approved source ownership, identity-aware retrieval, retention rules, audit logs, and a way to show which evidence influenced an answer. RAG can cite the document chunks supplied to the model. A graph can show the nodes and edges traversed, but that is only meaningful if each fact carries provenance and the application can explain qualifiers such as date, region, environment, or permission scope.
Access control is especially important in hybrid systems. A graph edge can reveal that a sensitive project exists even when the underlying document is restricted. Apply authorization to graph traversal and passage retrieval, and test for indirect disclosure through summaries, counts, and relationship explanations.
What are the latency, infrastructure, and cost trade-offs?
Text RAG usually has fewer moving parts: ingestion, one or more search indexes, retrieval and ranking, and model generation. GraphRAG adds schema management, graph storage, traversal planning, entity resolution, and relationship updates; a hybrid adds those components while retaining text or vector search. More components can increase operational latency and failure modes, although the right graph query may reduce the amount of text the model must read.
Do not choose on a presumed universal cost or speed advantage. The available guidance does not provide a neutral enterprise benchmark or a generally valid break-even point. Measure ingestion time, index or graph-update time, retrieval latency, model-context size, infrastructure utilization, and staff effort using the same representative workload and security controls.
How should an enterprise evaluate RAG versus a graph design?
Build an evaluation set from real questions, not synthetic examples alone. Include easy lookups, ambiguous names, multi-hop relationship questions, long-document comparisons, permission-sensitive requests, recently changed facts, and questions with no supported answer.
- Define the answer contract. Specify whether an answer must quote evidence, provide citations, identify uncertainty, preserve relationship direction, or abstain when sources conflict.
- Measure retrieval. Check precision of retrieved items, coverage of the evidence required for a correct answer, duplicate rate, freshness, and whether unauthorized material is excluded.
- Measure structure. For graph cases, verify entity resolution, edge direction, path completeness, qualifiers, and provenance. For RAG cases, verify chunk boundaries and whether key exceptions survive retrieval.
- Measure generation. Score factual correctness, completeness, citation or evidence quality, unsupported claims, and faithful explanation of relationships.
- Measure operations. Record p50 and tail latency, failure and timeout rates, update lag, index or graph maintenance effort, and model-context consumption under expected load.
- Review difficult failures. Categorize misses as retrieval, data-quality, authorization, reasoning, prompt, or presentation failures; then fix the responsible stage rather than merely increasing model size.
Compare systems on the same corpus, permissions, model, prompt budget, and question set. A vendor’s description of a product pattern can explain how that pattern works, but it is not independent proof that the pattern is best for your workload. The 2026 survey literature includes more than 300 references published from 2020 through early 2025; that corpus describes the breadth of research, not enterprise adoption or a head-to-head performance result. See the survey record at ScienceDirect.
How can you choose an architecture without overbuilding?
- Inventory the questions first. Label each as lookup, summary, comparison, aggregation, or multi-hop relationship analysis. Record the evidence and freshness each answer requires.
- Start with the simplest retrieval that can satisfy the contract. For passage-grounded lookups, implement permission-aware lexical and vector RAG with citations and freshness checks.
- Introduce structure where failures are relational. Model only the entities and edges needed for recurring impact, ownership, dependency, or compliance questions. Keep links to the source passages.
- Use a planner for mixed questions. Let the application retrieve graph structure, passages, or both based on query intent, rather than forcing every request through every index.
- Set an explicit maintenance owner. Document who approves schema changes, validates extracted relationships, retires stale content, and investigates retrieval failures.
- Promote only measured improvements. Require the candidate architecture to improve evidence coverage or answer quality without violating authorization, freshness, latency, or operating constraints.
What common mistakes make either approach fail?
Assuming more context is always better
Stuffing a prompt with every matching passage or a large unfiltered subgraph can bury the decisive evidence and increase contradictory content. Retrieve the smallest sufficient context, preserve source order or relationship structure where it matters, and test the model’s behavior when sources conflict.

Building a graph before defining questions
A broad ontology with thousands of low-value edges is expensive to validate and difficult to query. Begin with a narrow set of decisions the graph must support, then expand only when evaluation shows a missing relationship is responsible for real failures.
Ignoring temporal and scoped facts
“Owned by,” “applies to,” and “depends on” often change by date, environment, geography, or business unit. Store those qualifiers and make the query planner enforce them; otherwise a technically connected fact may still be wrong for the user’s situation.
Confusing extraction confidence with truth
Language-model extraction can accelerate graph construction, but an extracted edge is a claim requiring validation. Route high-impact relationships through authoritative system feeds or human review, and retain the original evidence for audits.
Evaluating only the final prose
A fluent answer can conceal a retrieval miss, an unauthorized source, or a reversed edge. Score the retrieved evidence and intermediate structure as well as the final response, and include abstention tests where the source set does not support an answer.
Can RAG and a knowledge graph be used together?
Yes. A graph can act as one retriever in a RAG system, while document, keyword, and vector indexes supply the passages that explain graph facts. The combined design is useful when users need both “which entities are connected?” and “what do the authoritative sources say about that connection?”
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do knowledge graphs eliminate hallucinations?
No. They can constrain retrieval to explicit entities and relationships, but missing or incorrect edges still lead to wrong context, and the language model can misstate correctly retrieved evidence. Provenance, authorization, answer evaluation, and clear abstention behavior remain necessary.
Is GraphRAG the same as a vector database?
No. A vector database indexes representations for similarity retrieval, whereas a graph models entities and links that can be traversed. A GraphRAG system may use vectors to find starting entities or passages, but graph traversal and relationship-aware retrieval are additional capabilities.
Best Value
How often should a knowledge graph be updated?
There is no universal schedule. Match updates to the volatility and risk of each fact: event-driven or near-real-time updates may suit service dependencies or access rights, while scheduled batches can be adequate for slower-changing reference data. Measure update lag as part of the answer-quality and governance evaluation.
What should be logged when an enterprise AI answer is challenged?
Retain the user and authorization context, query interpretation, retrieved passages or graph elements, source versions and timestamps, ranking or traversal decisions, model and prompt versions, and the final answer. These records let investigators determine whether the failure came from stale data, retrieval, permissions, graph construction, or generation without exposing restricted content to the investigator unnecessarily.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a small team start with RAG and add a graph later?
Yes. Preserve stable document identifiers, metadata, permissions, and entity mentions from the first RAG version. Those foundations make it easier to add canonical entities and relationships later without rebuilding every source connector.
What is a good first graph use case in an enterprise?
Choose a narrow, high-value relationship question with authoritative source data, such as application dependencies or ownership escalation. A bounded use case makes edge validation and impact measurement practical before the schema expands.
Should graph facts or source documents be shown to users?
Show the form of evidence that matches the decision: a path or relationship explanation for connectivity questions, and the underlying passage for policy or contractual wording. Linking both is safest when users must audit how a conclusion was reached.
How do you handle conflicting documents and graph edges?
Assign source precedence and effective dates before generation, then expose the conflict instead of silently merging claims. The retrieval layer should preserve both supporting records when the conflict itself is material to the user’s decision.
