Short answer: The PUMA Fast-FWD NITRO Elite 2 is a very light, neutral road-racing shoe aimed primarily at fast 5K and 10K efforts, track-style speed sessions and runners who prefer a low-cushioning, aggressive feel. It combines PUMA’s NITROFOAM Elite midsole with a carbon-fibre PWRPLATE, an 8 mm drop and a stripped-down build. Running Warehouse testers called it ultra lightweight, snappy, energetic and fast, while also warning that the shoe can run slightly long and may feel under-foamed beneath the toes for forefoot strikers. At roughly $200 in US references (with regional prices of €200 in Ireland and ₹19,999 including GST in India), it is a specialized racing tool rather than an all-purpose trainer.

Is the PUMA Fast-FWD NITRO Elite 2 good for 5K and 10K racing?

Yes—5K and 10K racing is the clearest use case supported by both PUMA’s positioning and independent wear testing. PUMA describes the shoe as built for short distances, while Running Warehouse used it for all-out speed workouts and identified it as a stripped-down racing flat for 5K/10K competition. The low cushioning, very light weight and carbon-fibre plate favor quick turnover and direct power transfer over maximum comfort on long races.

That specialization matters. A runner who wants one shoe for easy mileage, long runs and racing may find the Fast-FWD NITRO Elite 2 too minimal. A runner with a separate daily trainer who wants a lightweight option for race day and controlled speed sessions is much closer to the intended audience.

Best matches

  • Road 5K and 10K races where low weight and a lively response are priorities.
  • Intervals, repetitions and other short, high-speed workouts.
  • Neutral runners who like a firm, close-to-the-road racing platform.

Less obvious matches

  • Long-distance racing when you need substantial forefoot protection.
  • Daily training on tired legs or high-mileage weeks.
  • Runners who prefer a soft, forgiving ride or a roomy, extra-wide fit.

How do the NITROFOAM Elite midsole and PWRPLATE change the ride?

The midsole uses NITROFOAM Elite, and the shoe includes a carbon-fibre PWRPLATE. PUMA says the combination is intended to improve responsiveness, energy transfer and propulsion. Its official product copy says: “The Fast-FWD NITRO™ Elite 2 Running Shoes help you launch forward with ultra-responsive NITROFOAM™ Elite and a carbon-fibre PWRPLATE. Built for short-distances, they help you push the pace all race long.” That is a description of design intent, not a laboratory measurement of energy return or finishing time.

Running Warehouse’s direct-use review supplies the practical context: testers reported an “ultra lightweight,” “snappy and energetic” feel and described the shoe as “FAST” during all-out speed workouts. Those are reviewer impressions from actual use, not a universal result for every runner. The plate is best understood as part of a rigid, propulsion-oriented system; your cadence, strike pattern, strength and familiarity with plated shoes will determine how useful that geometry feels.

The shoe’s published 30 mm heel and 22 mm forefoot produce an 8 mm heel-to-toe difference. The drop is moderate enough to avoid an extreme heel-to-forefoot transition, but the overall package remains low-cushioning by modern super-shoe standards. If you normally train in high-stack shoes, introduce it gradually rather than making it your first plated workout.

How does it feel during speed workouts and races?

The strongest independent signal is the Running Warehouse test: users took the shoe through all-out speed workouts and found it exceptionally light, energetic and quick. That combination can make a short race feel less encumbered, particularly when you are already comfortable running fast in a plated shoe.

The trade-off is less forgiveness. PUMA categorizes the cushioning as low, and the 22 mm forefoot leaves less foam between your foot and the road than many contemporary long-distance racers. Running Warehouse specifically notes that forefoot strikers may want more foam under the toes. If your stride loads the forefoot heavily, pay attention to how your feet and calves respond during a controlled trial before committing to a race.

There is no controlled laboratory energy-return test or independent head-to-head comparison in the available evidence. Do not treat the plate or the tester’s “FAST” description as a guaranteed time improvement. The meaningful question is whether the shoe’s firm, propulsive geometry lets you hold your target pace without discomfort or loss of control.

How does the Fast-FWD NITRO Elite 2 fit?

PUMA lists a regular width and neutral construction. Running Warehouse reports that the shoe fits slightly long and says some runners may prefer going down a half size. That is a reviewer observation, not a universal sizing rule, so use your foot shape, intended sock thickness and the retailer’s return policy when deciding.

A practical sizing check

  1. Try your normal running-shoe size late in the day, when feet are naturally a little larger.
  2. Leave roughly a thumb’s width in front of the longest toe while standing, but make sure the heel does not lift when you jog.
  3. Test the fit with the socks you will race in; a thin racing sock can change the feel compared with a thick training sock.
  4. If your normal size feels noticeably long and the heel is secure, test a half-size down only when the retailer allows exchanges.
  5. Run short strides and turns indoors or on a clean surface before removing tags, checking for toe pressure, arch irritation or heel movement.

Because the shoe is a specialized racer, a precise lockdown matters more than simply maximizing room. Do not size down automatically if you have a broad forefoot, high-volume foot or a history of black toenails; the reduced forefoot foam means pressure can become obvious at speed.

Is the cushioning enough for a 5K or 10K?

For many neutral runners, the low-cushioning setup can be adequate for a 5K and workable for a 10K, especially when the shoe is reserved for racing rather than daily mileage. The shorter the event and the more accustomed you are to firm racing flats, the more likely the design will feel appropriate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 10K doubles the exposure time of a 5K, so fit and forefoot tolerance become more important. Forefoot strikers should be especially cautious because Running Warehouse found that some may want additional foam beneath the toes. Heel and midfoot strikers should still assess calf fatigue, stability on corners and how the plate feels late in a hard effort.

Use your training to decide

  • Start with strides or short repetitions, not a full race simulation.
  • Progress to a workout that totals approximately your planned race distance at or near race pace.
  • Check how your feet, calves and Achilles feel later that day and the following morning.
  • Keep a backup race shoe available until the Fast-FWD has demonstrated reliable comfort at the target distance.

This process cannot guarantee a perfect race experience, but it exposes the main risk of a low-cushioning plated shoe: discomfort that appears only after several kilometers.

How durable is it, and how should the 800 km figure be interpreted?

PUMA gives an average-distance guidance figure of 800 km. That is a manufacturer estimate, not an independently verified lifespan study. Racing shoes can show useful performance changes before the outsole is visibly worn, and individual mileage depends on body weight, surface, weather, stride mechanics and how often the shoe is used.

Use the 800 km number as a planning reference rather than a warranty. Record mileage and inspect the outsole, foam compression and plate feel. Replace or retire the shoe for racing when traction is compromised, the midsole feels permanently flat, the upper no longer holds your foot or the ride becomes inconsistent. Keeping it for occasional workouts after it stops feeling race-ready may be reasonable, but do not assume the original propulsion remains unchanged.

Habits that protect a racing shoe

  • Rotate it with a durable daily trainer instead of wearing it for every run.
  • Allow the foam and upper to dry at room temperature after wet sessions.
  • Remove grit from the outsole before it is stored, particularly after rough asphalt.
  • Avoid machine washing, bleach and direct high heat, which can damage adhesives and materials.

How much does the PUMA Fast-FWD NITRO Elite 2 cost?

Pricing depends on market, currency, colorway, stock and the date you check. The cited PUMA Ireland page lists €200. PUMA India lists ₹19,999 including GST for the displayed colorway. US specialist references place it around $200, with Nerd Runner listing $199.95 and Run Rotation giving a $200 reference price.

Market or reference Listed price Important qualification
Ireland €200 PUMA Ireland page; availability and promotions can change
India ₹19,999 Includes GST on the cited PUMA India page and applies to the displayed colorway
United States reference About $200 Run Rotation reference price; not a guarantee of current retail stock
United States reference $199.95 Nerd Runner listing; price and availability are volatile

At this price, value depends on use frequency. If you race several short events and complete regular speed sessions, a dedicated racer can justify the cost over a season. If you need one pair to cover easy runs, long runs and racing, the low cushioning and specialized fit make the purchase harder to justify.

What are the main advantages and drawbacks?

Advantages

  • Very low reported weights: 130 g men’s and 111 g women’s in Running Warehouse samples, with other listings near 125 g.
  • Carbon-fibre PWRPLATE and NITROFOAM Elite provide a clearly propulsion-focused design.
  • 8 mm drop and regular-width geometry suit runners seeking a conventional transition in a racing flat.
  • Independent testers found it snappy, energetic and fast in all-out speed sessions.
  • Short-distance positioning is clear, so the shoe’s purpose is easy to understand.

Drawbacks

  • Low cushioning may not provide enough forefoot protection for every runner, especially forefoot strikers.
  • Running Warehouse found the fit slightly long for some users, creating a possible half-size decision.
  • The regular-width option does not address runners who need a wide fit.
  • There is no independent long-term durability study or laboratory energy-return result to validate the 800 km guidance or performance claims.
  • Regional prices near $200 make it expensive as a single everyday shoe.

Who should buy the Fast-FWD NITRO Elite 2?

Buy it if you are a neutral runner seeking a dedicated 5K/10K racer, already tolerate firm or low-cushioning shoes, and can verify the fit before race day. It is particularly logical for athletes who maintain a separate trainer and want a light, plate-assisted option for intervals and short races.

Think twice if you are a forefoot striker who needs substantial toe protection, require a wide fit, prefer soft cushioning, or want one shoe to handle every training run. The available evidence does not establish that the Fast-FWD is unsuitable for longer racing, but its design brief and cushioning category are clearly short-distance oriented.

How should you test it before race day?

  1. Confirm the return terms. Check the seller’s exchange window before running outdoors, because the slightly-long fit observation may require a size change.
  2. Walk and jog first. Look for heel lift, toe pressure and any rubbing while the shoe is still clean and returnable.
  3. Add strides. Run several relaxed accelerations to feel how the plate and low forefoot cushioning interact with your stride.
  4. Run a specific workout. Use repetitions or a controlled tempo session that approaches your intended 5K or 10K effort.
  5. Evaluate recovery. Note foot, calf and Achilles soreness later that day and the next morning.
  6. Race only after consistency. Keep the shoe for competition once it has delivered the required pace without hot spots or unusual fatigue in more than one session.

This sequence distinguishes a shoe that feels exciting for a few minutes from one that remains manageable through the entire event.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the Fast-FWD NITRO Elite 2 for marathon training?

You can use it for selected short workouts if your body tolerates the low cushioning, but the available product positioning is for short-distance racing and pace work. A more cushioned training shoe is the safer default for most long runs; there is no evidence here establishing this model as a marathon-training specialist.

Does the carbon plate make the shoe illegal for road races?

The supplied specifications identify a carbon-fibre PWRPLATE but do not document any event-rule certification or stack-height compliance analysis. Check the governing body and race regulations for your event before relying on any plated shoe.

How should I clean the shoes after a wet race?

Remove the insoles, rinse surface dirt with cool water and let the shoes air-dry away from direct heat. Avoid bleach, solvents and machine washing, which can weaken the upper, foam or adhesives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do published weights differ between reviews?

Weights are tied to sample size, gender version, shoe size and measuring method. The cited sources report 130 g men’s and 111 g women’s, 125 g in another listing, and 4.6/3.9 oz figures elsewhere, so compare like-for-like rather than treating one number as universal.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
