Choose PULSE Explore if you want compact wireless earbuds, phone Bluetooth, simultaneous phone-and-game audio, or wireless audio from PlayStation Portal. Choose PULSE 3D if you prefer an over-ear headset, want longer uninterrupted wireless sessions on one charge, need a 3.5 mm wired fallback, or value on-headset chat/game balance controls. Both support 3D Audio in compatible PS5 games; neither is a universal sound-quality winner, because earbud fit and over-ear comfort depend on the listener.
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Free plan / price | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PULSE Explore | Portable earbuds, Bluetooth, simultaneous audio, wireless Portal listening | Up to 5 hours per earbud charge, plus up to 10 additional hours from the case | $149 at PlayStation Direct’s observed US catalog in 2026 | PS5 and compatible PC/Mac via included PlayStation Link USB adapter; supported mobile devices via Bluetooth; PlayStation Portal via PlayStation Link | Nov 2026 |
| PULSE 3D | Over-ear fit, longer wireless sessions, wired fallback, headset chat/game controls | Up to 12 hours of wireless play on one charge | Current US price not established | PS5/PS4 and compatible computers via included 2.4 GHz USB adapter; compatible 3.5 mm devices via cable | Nov 2026 |
Which PS5 headset is better for your setup?
Neither model is better for everyone: the right choice depends on whether you prioritize Explore’s portability and connected-device options or PULSE 3D’s over-ear design and physical controls. The comparison is between two different form factors, not two versions of the same headset.

Explore places a small earbud in each ear and stores them in a charging case; PULSE 3D sits over the ears and is worn as a conventional headset. Think first about how you like to wear audio, then check whether the wireless connections and controls suit the devices and games you use. A feature list can narrow the choice, but it cannot predict which fit will be comfortable for you.
Choose PULSE Explore if portability and connected audio matter most
Explore is a pair of wireless earbuds supplied with a charging case. Its strongest practical advantages are not just its smaller shape: it supports Bluetooth for compatible phones, can play Bluetooth and PlayStation Link audio simultaneously, and connects wirelessly to PlayStation Portal using PlayStation Link. That combination suits someone who wants game audio and phone audio available together, or who moves between a PS5, a phone, and Portal.

For a player who keeps a phone nearby, simultaneous listening means the game connection does not have to be replaced by Bluetooth just to hear phone audio. The supported arrangement is Bluetooth to a compatible mobile device alongside PlayStation Link to the PlayStation setup. It is a specific feature of Explore, not a general guarantee that any two wireless audio sources can be combined on any headset. If phone-and-game audio together is your deciding feature, make sure you are comparing Explore with the exact PULSE 3D model rather than assuming both products have Bluetooth.
Explore uses planar magnetic drivers and PlayStation Link for its PlayStation wireless connection. Those are useful features to know about, but they do not prove that the earbuds sound better than PULSE 3D in a controlled comparison. A secure earbud seal also affects both comfort and the listening experience, so a model that works well for one person may not suit another.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Sony provides a fit check for Explore, and its safety guide gives an approximate weight of 6.1 g for each earbud with a medium tip. That figure is not the weight of the pair, the charging case, or everything you carry. Before judging fit, use Sony’s guidance and try the available ear tips; do not assume the medium tip is the right size just because it is the reference in the weight specification. If the seal is not secure, the earbuds may not feel or sound as intended for you.
The charging case is useful for transport and for topping up between listening sessions, but remember that its battery figure describes extra listening available through recharging. Explore is a better physical match for someone who values a compact case-based setup than for someone who wants to leave a headset on continuously through the longest possible session without taking it off to charge.
Choose PULSE 3D if you prefer a headset and its controls
PULSE 3D is an over-ear wireless headset. Its documented advantages include up to 12 hours of wireless play on one charge, a 3.5 mm cable for compatible devices, and onboard controls for master volume, chat/game mix, microphone monitoring, and mic mute. If you want to adjust the balance between game sound and chat without reaching for a console menu, those controls are a meaningful difference.
Its physical controls also make the choice more specific than “headset versus earbuds.” A player who regularly changes chat/game balance can use the documented mix control on PULSE 3D. Mic monitoring is another listed control, and mic mute and master volume are available on the headset. Explore has easy-access volume controls, but the cited feature set does not list the same chat/game mix and mic-monitoring controls. If those adjustments matter during multiplayer, compare the controls you will actually use rather than treating the products as control-equivalent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe headset weighs 292 g according to Sony’s instruction manual. That number can help when comparing its physical design with earbuds, but it does not tell you how comfortable it will feel over a long session: head shape, clamping feel, glasses, and personal preference all matter. Explore’s approximately 6.1 g figure is for each earbud with a medium tip, not the complete set with its case.
There is also a practical difference between a headset you wear and earbuds you remove and store. PULSE 3D does not need to be put back into a case between short breaks, while Explore’s case provides the route to its additional rated listening time. Neither point makes one universally more convenient: it depends on where you play, whether you pause between sessions, and how you prefer to handle your audio gear.
Do both PULSE Explore and PULSE 3D support PS5 3D Audio?
Yes. Both can deliver PS5 3D Audio in supported games, so the “3D” in PULSE 3D’s name does not make that headset the only option for the feature.
Sony describes PULSE 3D as specifically tuned for the 3D Audio made possible by PS5. Explore also supports 3D Audio in compatible PS5 games. The feature depends on the game supporting it; owning either headset does not make every game output 3D Audio.

Because both models support the feature, 3D Audio alone is not a strong reason to choose one over the other. Base that decision on fit, battery pattern, controls, and the devices you need to connect. The available specifications do not establish an objective sound-quality winner between them.
In other words, the product name is not a compatibility rule. PULSE 3D is not the only headset in this comparison that can be used for supported PS5 3D Audio, and the fact that Explore has planar magnetic drivers does not by itself establish a listening-test advantage. If you are shopping specifically for spatial audio, check whether the games you play support the feature and then use comfort and connection needs to break the tie.
How do PS5, PC, phone, and Portal connections differ?
Explore uses PlayStation Link for its PlayStation connection and Bluetooth for supported mobile devices. PULSE 3D uses its included 2.4 GHz wireless USB adapter for PS5, PS4, and compatible computers, with a separate 3.5 mm wired option; Sony does not establish Bluetooth support for it.
PS5 and compatible computers
Both products include a USB wireless adapter for PlayStation and compatible computers. Explore’s included adapter is a PlayStation Link USB adapter. PULSE 3D’s included adapter is a 2.4 GHz wireless adapter; it is not a PlayStation Link adapter. Do not treat the two wireless systems or their adapters as interchangeable based only on the fact that both use USB.
For Explore, phone Bluetooth is not the way to connect directly to PS5. Use the included PlayStation Link USB adapter for the console connection. For PULSE 3D, use its included wireless USB adapter on supported PlayStation and computer setups, or use the cable with a compatible 3.5 mm jack.
For a straightforward setup, start with the adapter included with the product you bought and connect it to the compatible console or computer. The wireless adapter types are product-specific: an Explore owner should look for a PlayStation Link adapter, while a PULSE 3D owner uses its included 2.4 GHz adapter. The fact that both devices connect through USB does not mean they use the same wireless connection. Do not buy an additional adapter on the assumption that any PlayStation headset USB dongle will work with either model.
Sony also documents pairing Explore with a second standalone PlayStation Link USB adapter. That can be a useful additional accessory if you need a separate adapter for another compatible setup, but it is not required to use the one included with Explore. This is a narrow accessory consideration, not a reason to count on a second adapter being included in the box.
Phone and simultaneous listening
Explore can connect to supported mobile devices over Bluetooth while also maintaining a PlayStation Link connection, allowing phone and game audio to be heard at the same time. That is useful for calls or phone audio alongside a game, rather than having to choose one wireless source. PULSE 3D has no Bluetooth capability established in Sony’s listed specifications; a phone or other device with a compatible audio jack can instead be connected by cable.
Recommended Free Tools
So, to the question “Does PULSE 3D have Bluetooth?”, the supported answer is that Sony’s specifications do not establish Bluetooth capability for this model. Its wireless play is described through the included USB adapter, and its wired alternative is the 3.5 mm cable. Do not mistake wireless operation for Bluetooth: the two products use different documented wireless connection methods.
PlayStation Portal
Explore supports a wireless PlayStation Link connection to Portal. PULSE 3D is not documented as supporting a PlayStation Link wireless Portal connection. Portal has a 3.5 mm jack, however, and PULSE 3D includes a 3.5 mm cable, so it can be used with Portal as a wired option.

The distinction is between wireless and wired compatibility, not between “works” and “does not work.” If you want to pick up Portal and listen wirelessly, Explore is the documented match in this pair. If you already own PULSE 3D, its included cable offers a wired route through Portal’s audio jack. That route gives up wireless convenience and should not be described as a PlayStation Link connection.
What to expect from PULSE 3D in wired mode
PULSE 3D’s included 3.5 mm cable is useful when a compatible device has an audio jack or when you want a non-wireless connection. Sony notes, however, that wireless functions and headset buttons are disabled in wired mode. The cable therefore should not be treated as a way to retain every control feature while bypassing the wireless adapter. Microphone compatibility can also vary with the cable and the connected device.
If replacing the cable, look for a compatible 3.5 mm four-conductor audio cable and check the intended device’s microphone support. A cable that carries audio is not automatically guaranteed to support the headset microphone with every device. Likewise, if you need replacement PULSE 3D ear pads, Sony documents their removal and installation, but verify model fit for any third-party pads before purchasing.
Which has the better battery life?
PULSE 3D has the higher stated single-charge wireless runtime: up to 12 hours. Explore is rated for up to 5 hours per earbud charge, with up to 10 additional hours available through the included charging case.
Those figures describe different use patterns. The case extends Explore’s listening across recharges, but its additional case time is not 10 more uninterrupted hours on a single earbud charge. The total is not equivalent to a 15-hour continuous session. PULSE 3D’s up-to-12-hour figure is the stated wireless runtime on one charge; actual runtime varies.
Think about how you use audio rather than comparing the largest totals alone. If you often listen for long stretches without pausing to put earbuds in a case, PULSE 3D’s single-charge rating is the more relevant figure. If you prefer earbuds and can recharge between sessions, Explore’s case adds listening time without requiring a headset form factor.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThese are manufacturer maximums, not promises of the same runtime for every owner or every use pattern. The useful comparison is that Explore is rated for up to five hours before the earbuds need a case recharge, while the case can provide up to ten additional hours across recharges; PULSE 3D is rated for up to twelve hours wirelessly on one charge. If you need an uninterrupted session longer than Explore’s per-charge figure, the case does not change that per-charge limit. If you play in shorter stretches with breaks, the case’s extra capacity may be more relevant than the headline single-charge difference.
What do the microphones and controls actually do?
Both have two microphones, but the cited noise-reduction descriptions apply to microphone capture, not proven active noise cancellation for the listener. Neither specification establishes that outside sound is actively blocked from reaching your ears.
Explore’s two hidden microphones use AI-enhanced microphone noise rejection, and the earbuds have easy-access volume controls. PULSE 3D has two built-in microphones described as noise-cancelling, plus controls for mic mute, master volume, chat/game mix, and mic monitoring. These are feature descriptions, not independent measurements of microphone clarity or noise reduction in a particular room.
If your priority is changing the game/chat balance from the headset itself, PULSE 3D has a documented control for that. If you want the smaller earbud format and controls for volume, Explore is the better match. The available information does not provide a measured microphone-quality comparison.

Pay close attention to what “noise” refers to in the microphone descriptions. Microphone noise rejection or noise-cancelling wording concerns what the microphones capture; it is not proof of listener-facing active noise cancellation. Do not buy either product expecting the published microphone language to mean it will actively silence room noise for you. Likewise, two microphones on each device do not establish which one will sound clearer to other players in your room.
How much do they cost, and is PULSE 3D still available?
PlayStation Direct’s observed US headset catalog listed PULSE Explore at $149 in 2026, but did not display PULSE 3D among its listed headsets. That storefront observation does not prove PULSE 3D has been discontinued or cannot be bought elsewhere. No defensible current US price for PULSE 3D is established here, so check a seller’s live listing and confirm the product’s condition before comparing value.
For a fair comparison, check the exact model name, seller, condition, and included accessories on any listing. The $149 figure is the observed US PlayStation Direct listing for Explore; it is not an established PULSE 3D price, nor does the absence of PULSE 3D from that catalog establish that every seller has stopped carrying it. If a PULSE 3D offer is used or refurbished, confirm its condition and whether the wireless adapter and 3.5 mm cable are included before treating it as equivalent to a complete set.
Be careful not to confuse PULSE 3D with Sony’s separately announced PlayStation PULSE Wireless Headset. Sony announced a $99.99 recommended retail price for that different product and a November 19, 2026 launch in selected regions, including the US. The announced price and launch date are not PULSE 3D specifications or pricing, and on November 5, 2026, that stated launch date had not yet arrived.

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that separate PlayStation PULSE Wireless Headset on the PlayStation Blog on October 21, 2026. Its stated $99.99 recommended retail price belongs to that newer, separately named product. It is not a revised PULSE 3D price and should not be used to infer what an existing PULSE 3D listing ought to cost. Check the complete product name before you compare prices or search a retailer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which one should you buy for common PS5 setups?
Use the device you most need to connect and the way you prefer to wear audio as the deciding factors. Both can handle supported PS5 3D Audio, so the decision usually comes down to portability, battery routine, controls, and wired compatibility.
- PS5 plus PlayStation Portal: Choose Explore if you want Portal audio wirelessly through PlayStation Link. Choose PULSE 3D if you are comfortable using its included 3.5 mm cable with Portal.
- PS5 plus phone audio at the same time: Explore is the clear match in the documented feature set because it supports simultaneous PlayStation Link and Bluetooth listening.
- Long sessions without earbud charging breaks: PULSE 3D’s up-to-12-hour single-charge rating better suits this priority, though actual runtime varies.
- Chat-heavy multiplayer: PULSE 3D offers a headset chat/game mix control and mic monitoring. Explore’s cited controls include volume, but not the same documented chat/game mix feature.
- One headset for wired and wireless use: PULSE 3D includes both a wireless USB adapter and a 3.5 mm cable. Its wired mode has limitations: wireless features and headset buttons are disabled, and microphone compatibility varies by cable and device.
- Small, packable listening gear: Explore’s earbuds and charging case are the more portable form factor. Check that earbuds fit securely before relying on them for long sessions.
It can help to answer these questions before buying: Do you need Portal audio without a cable? Do you want phone audio to play alongside your game? Would you rather wear earbuds or an over-ear headset? Will you regularly adjust chat/game balance from the headset? Do you need a wired audio option for a compatible device? A “yes” to the first two points favors Explore; a strong preference for over-ear wear, the listed PULSE 3D controls, or a cable fallback favors PULSE 3D.
There are also a few easy shopping mistakes to avoid. Do not assume PULSE 3D has Bluetooth because it is wireless; its documented wireless connection is through its 2.4 GHz USB adapter. Do not assume its wired connection to Portal is wireless PlayStation Link support. Do not compare Explore’s five-hour earbud charge with the case’s additional time as if the pair runs continuously for fifteen hours. Finally, do not attribute another PlayStation headset’s price or features to PULSE 3D because the names sound similar.
What is the practical verdict?
PULSE Explore is the more flexible choice for a player who values earbuds, phone Bluetooth, simultaneous audio, or wireless Portal use. PULSE 3D is the more straightforward fit for someone who wants over-ear headphones, longer rated runtime per charge, physical chat/game controls, or a wired fallback. If you have no preference on those factors, the documented features do not justify declaring one the sound-quality winner; try to make fit and the devices you own the deciding criteria.
For PS5 3D Audio, either is a supported option in compatible games. For a phone-and-game setup or wireless Portal listening, Explore has the clearer documented advantage. For a one-charge runtime rating, headset-based chat/game controls, and wired listening from a compatible 3.5 mm jack, PULSE 3D has the clearer advantage. The better purchase is the one that matches your actual connection and fit needs, not the one whose name or largest battery number sounds most impressive.

Does PULSE Explore work with PlayStation Portal?
Yes. Explore supports a wireless PlayStation Link connection to Portal. PULSE 3D is not documented as supporting that wireless connection, but it can connect to Portal’s 3.5 mm jack with its included cable.
Does PULSE 3D have Bluetooth?
Sony’s listed specifications do not establish Bluetooth support for PULSE 3D. Its documented wireless connection uses the included 2.4 GHz USB adapter; a compatible device with a 3.5 mm jack can use the included cable instead.
Do both headsets work with PS5 3D Audio?
Yes, both can deliver 3D Audio in supported PS5 games. PULSE 3D is not the only option for that feature, and neither headset makes every game output 3D Audio.

No. In wired mode, Sony notes that PULSE 3D’s wireless functions and headset buttons are disabled. Microphone compatibility may also vary with the cable and connected device.
Is PULSE 3D discontinued, and how much does it cost?
Its absence from the observed PlayStation Direct US headset catalog does not establish that it is discontinued or unavailable elsewhere. No current US price was established; compare a seller’s live listing, product condition, and included accessories.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Pick PULSE Explore for compact earbuds, Bluetooth phone audio alongside a game, and wireless PlayStation Portal listening. Pick PULSE 3D for an over-ear design, up to 12 hours of stated wireless play on one charge, physical chat/game controls, and a 3.5 mm wired option. Both support PS5 3D Audio in compatible games, so fit and the connections you need are better deciding factors than the product names.
