Yes. A genuinely public Telegram channel can be read through its web preview at https://t.me/s/<channel-username> with an ordinary HTTP client, so a Telegram API key is not required for a limited collection job. The preview currently renders the channel name and username, message text, post links, media links, view counts, dates and navigation to older posts. This is a website interface, not a supported data API: HTML classes, pagination and access rules can change. Use it only for public pages, collect the minimum fields you need, throttle requests, preserve provenance and respect Telegram’s terms, copyright and privacy obligations.
Can you scrape a public Telegram channel without an API key?
You can fetch and parse the HTML preview of a public channel without signing in or creating developer credentials. Open the channel’s public username in a browser as https://t.me/s/<channel-username>; the resulting page is the same surface an HTTP client can request.

This method is suitable for a small, transparent collection of material that is already public. It is not a substitute for an authenticated Telegram integration, a private-channel reader or a way around login, anti-bot or permission controls.

What does public mean before you start?
A channel is appropriate for this workflow only when it has a public @username and its preview opens for an ordinary visitor who is not logged in. Telegram describes public chats as accessible to everyone. A private invite link, a channel that asks for membership, or a page that returns an access-control response is outside this method.
Check the URL in a normal browser
Replace the username in the preview pattern with the channel’s actual handle and load it manually. Confirm that you can see posts, dates and navigation without entering credentials. Record the exact URL you tested; a username can be changed or a channel can be made private later.
Define a narrow collection purpose
Write down why you need the data and which fields answer that question. A fact-checking task may need the post URL, date and text. An editorial archive may additionally need explicitly linked media. Avoid collecting profile information, comments, usernames or sensitive material merely because the markup exposes it.
Set a stop condition
Decide in advance when the job ends: a date range, a fixed number of pages, the end of Telegram’s own older-post navigation, a login prompt or an access-control response. A bounded job is easier to explain, throttle and delete than an open-ended mirror.
What are the trade-offs between the web preview and official interfaces?
The preview removes credential setup but gives up stability and scope. Choose it for a small public-page task; choose a supported Telegram interface when you need authenticated data, structured updates or a production integration.

How do you scrape a public channel step by step?
Follow the page exactly as a visitor would. The procedure below avoids hidden endpoints and undocumented offsets.

If the page is private, asks you to join, or requires a login, stop rather than trying to circumvent the barrier. - Fetch one page with a normal HTTP client. Save the response body, HTTP status, retrieval timestamp and requested URL together. Use a normal user-agent and a finite timeout. Do not send parallel bursts while you are still learning how the page behaves.
- Inspect the raw HTML first. Look for the repeated message container, the post permalink, visible text, media anchors, view count, timestamp and the link Telegram provides for older posts. Do not write selectors from a remembered tutorial; class names are implementation details.
- Choose only the fields you need. Keep the original post URL so an editor can verify context. Extract explicitly linked media only when your purpose and rights allow it. Do not silently expand the job to profile details, comments or unrelated links.
- Parse conservatively. Require a message container and tolerate missing optional elements. A post may have text but no media, or media but little text. Preserve empty values as empty rather than shifting data from a neighboring post.
- Follow Telegram’s own older-post link. Continue only while the fetched page exposes a next or older link. Stop when that navigation ends, when a login or access-control response appears, or when your predetermined range is reached. Never guess offsets or call undocumented endpoints.
- Throttle and cache. Keep the request rate low, cache pages you have already retrieved and avoid concurrent workers. Reuse a cached response during parser development instead of repeatedly hitting Telegram.
- Record provenance and provide deletion. Store the retrieval time, source URL, parser version and a hash of each raw page. Maintain a way to remove a post or media item if a channel owner or rights holder identifies material that should no longer be retained.
What is a minimal Python implementation?
The following sketch shows the shape of a parser, not a permanent contract. Its [data-post] and date-link selectors must be verified against the page you fetched, and the code has not been validated against every channel or Telegram release.

})In a real job, keep the status code and retrieval timestamp beside the parsed record, not only in a console printout. Check that the selected permalink belongs to the same message container, normalize whitespace without changing the wording, and retain the raw HTML or its hash for later verification.
Why should you call raise_for_status()?
An HTTP response can be a not-found page, a login prompt or an access-control document rather than a channel page. Failing fast prevents the parser from treating an error page as a series of empty posts. Log the status and stop for responses that do not represent the expected public preview.
How should you handle optional media?
Look for media URLs inside the current message container and store them only when they are explicitly linked. Do not infer a download URL by altering a path or calling an undocumented media endpoint. If a media element is absent, leave the media field empty and keep the post text and permalink.
Which fields can the preview expose?
Capture a small, explicit schema so later users know exactly what was collected. Availability is page-dependent; a missing field is not proof that Telegram deleted the underlying content.

For perspective, the official Telegram News preview displayed 9.24 million subscribers in 2026. That is mutable page metadata observed at that time, not a permanent Telegram-wide statistic and not evidence that every channel exposes subscriber counts in the same way.
How do you paginate without guessing undocumented offsets?
Pagination should be link-following, not endpoint discovery. Fetch the first page, identify the older-post link rendered by Telegram, request that exact link, and repeat until one of your stop conditions is met.
Use the page’s own navigation
Save the current URL and the older link before parsing the next page. Resolve only a link that Telegram actually placed in the document, and reject unexpected schemes or hosts if your application has an allowlist. This makes the crawl auditable and prevents a malformed link from sending the client elsewhere.

Detect the end cleanly
The absence of an older link is a normal completion state. So are a page that contains no further message containers, a login prompt, an access-control response or the date boundary you selected. Record which condition ended the run instead of repeatedly retrying the same page.
Avoid duplicate posts
Keep a set of post permalinks or another stable identifier from the rendered page. A cached page, a retry or a changed ordering can otherwise create duplicate records. Do not invent an identifier from a timestamp alone when two posts could share a displayed time.
How should you throttle, cache and monitor the scraper?
Telegram does not publish a universal selector or rate guarantee in the cited material, so conservative operations are the only defensible default. Make one request at a time while testing, add a deliberate delay appropriate to your project, cache successful responses and pause when the service returns an access-control or throttling response.
Cache before you parse
Store the raw response, status, headers needed for diagnostics, URL and retrieval time. Parser changes can then be tested against the cached page without another network request. A content hash lets you identify whether two retrievals returned the same document while avoiding unnecessary duplicate storage.
Log parser health
Track the number of message containers, posts with missing timestamps, posts without permalinks and pages that lack older navigation. A sudden change in those counts can indicate a frontend change rather than a real change in the channel. Alert on the anomaly and inspect a fresh page manually before changing selectors.
Do not bypass controls
Never rotate identities, defeat a CAPTCHA, evade a robots or anti-bot control, or probe hidden endpoints to continue a run. If ordinary requests no longer receive the public preview, stop and reassess the purpose or move to a supported interface with the required authorization.
What legal and privacy boundaries apply?
Public visibility does not erase obligations. Telegram’s Terms of Service state: “Telegram additionally prohibits data scraping as part of its Content Licensing and AI Scraping Terms, which apply to all users, businesses, and third-party services accessing the platform.” The Content Licensing Terms also restrict access to user-generated content for purposes other than ordinary, legitimate, intended use, with a limited exception for a compliant third-party client, bot or mini app.

Get permission for republication or bulk archives
If you plan to republish posts, build a searchable archive or distribute downloaded media, obtain permission from the channel owner and any separate rights holder where appropriate. Keep a record of that permission and its scope. A link back to Telegram is not, by itself, a copyright license.

Minimize personal data
Do not collect usernames, profile details, comments or sensitive material unless the purpose and legal basis are clear. Public posts can contain personal information about people who are not the channel owner. Define retention periods, restrict access to the collected files and honor applicable deletion or privacy requests.
Preserve a takedown path
Keep enough provenance to locate a source post without retaining more content than necessary. When an owner or rights holder asks for removal, identify the affected URL, delete derived copies according to your policy and record the action. Telegram’s FAQ describes a copyright-complaint route for public channels; follow the current process rather than inventing your own notice address.

Use an official interface when the project needs authenticated access, structured client behavior, updates, reliable production operation or data outside the public preview. Telegram’s API overview documents the Bot API, Telegram API/TDLib and Gateway API, while its API terms require client developers to obtain their own api_id.
Signs the preview is no longer sufficient
- You need private-channel or account-authorized content.
- You require message updates instead of periodic page retrieval.
- You need fields that are not visibly rendered in the HTML.
- You need a supported contract for a long-lived product integration.
- Your volume or reliability requirements cannot tolerate frontend selector changes.
Moving to an API does not remove compliance work. Credentials must be protected, the chosen interface must be used within its terms, and copyright, privacy and deletion duties still apply.

Diagnose the response and the page you actually received before changing code. Do not respond to an access barrier by searching for an undocumented workaround.

- HTTP status and a diagnostic reason when the page was not parsed;
- parser version or commit identifier;
- a hash of the raw response;
- the selected post URL, displayed date, text and explicitly linked media needed for the stated purpose; and
- the reason the run stopped.
Separate raw-page retention from the working dataset. Restrict access to raw HTML, set a deletion schedule and document who can approve an exception. This approach preserves editorial provenance while limiting exposure if a post later becomes disputed or subject to a takedown request.
What is the practical decision rule?
Choose the public preview only when all of the following are true: the channel is openly accessible, the fields you need are visibly rendered, the volume is modest, a low request rate is acceptable and your purpose fits Telegram’s terms and applicable law. If any one of those conditions fails, pause rather than escalating the scraper; obtain permission or design the project around a supported Telegram interface.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a channel owner change the public username after I collect posts?
Yes. A username is a mutable routing label, so an old preview URL may stop resolving or point to a different public identity later. Keep the original post permalinks, retrieval timestamps and any owner-provided confirmation so an editor can distinguish a renamed channel from a missing post.
How can I test a parser after Telegram changes its markup?
Keep a small set of legally retained HTML fixtures representing text-only posts, media posts and pages with older navigation. Run the parser against those fixtures before deployment, compare message and permalink counts with expected values, then manually inspect a fresh public page before accepting a selector change.
Is a one-off manual fact check treated the same as a bulk archive?
The practical risk is different, but both uses still need to fit Telegram’s terms and copyright rules. A one-off check should limit copying to what the editorial decision requires, preserve the source link and avoid turning the check into an unannounced redistribution of the channel.
What should I do if a rights holder disputes a stored post?
Pause publication of the disputed material, identify every derivative record from its source permalink and review the claimant’s rights information. Follow your documented deletion and appeal process, and retain only the minimum audit record needed to show what action was taken.
